Benjamin Franklin Dumm, Zanesville's oldest native-born citizen, died last evening at the home of his grandson, Frank Logan of Prospect avenue (Zanesville, OHIO).
He was 96? years of age and his death was due to infirmities incident upon his advanced age.
Mr. Dumm was born in a little two? room log cabin above what is now Seventh street and situated a little back from Main street on December 6, 1812. His early boyhood was spent in this city. In 1832 he left this city and went
to New York on horseback. He was married to Miss Mary Hyer of that city and the son Webster was born there. He returned to this city with the family by canal boat.
After a short residence in Brownsville (Licking County, Ohio?) the family returned to this city where they have since resided. While in Brownsville, he was injured in an explosion and was in a seriouscondition for some time as a result of the accident.
Mr. Dumm was a prominent Presbyterian being a member of the First Presbyterian church of this city. During his residence in this city he has made a host of friends who will learn with sorrow of the...unreadable who might have been called "the grand old man of Zanesville."

He was honorary member of the U.C.T. (United Commercial Travelers) having been a traveling man in his early days and a pioneer in the business. up until he was ? years of age where he was compelled to retire on account of his health. Since that time he lived quietly visiting his friends over the city and paying visits to places that were dear to him in his youth..
The ? of the city will join in ? their sympathy to the bereaved family and it is with genuine sorrow that thy have learned of the passing of the city's oldest ? and the severing of the ties that bind the present to the past of the city.
He is survived by one son, Webster Dumm, four grandsons and one grand-daughter, Mrs. C. E. Drake, and one sister, Mrs. Phoebe Oldham of Brownsville (Ohio). The grandsons are William H. Logan of Scranton, Pa., Harry (Article Cut Off)
Edward and Frank.
Apologies - the newspaper had blackened areas - difficult to read.
--------------------

Note: son of Jacob and Phoebe Martin Dumm

Zanesville, Ohio newspaper
Tuesday, January 7, 1908
Muskingum County
Licking County
Greenwood

I found this information on FamilySearch. It is from abstracts of the original records.

Casparus Dumm md. Eva Kun 2/17/1749 in Gissigheim, Mosbach, Baden, Germany. Parents listed on marriage record were Conradi Dumm and Anna Maria and Michael Kun and Anna Margarethae.

Then I found baptism of Joannes Casparus Dumm on Jan 14, 1723 in same place. Par. Conradi Dumm and Maria.

I have seen a 1719/1720 birthdate posted for Caspar and wonder where that came from.
Could my findings be our Caspar??
Thanks, Brenda

Elizabeth Jane Dumm b. June 1828 d. Apr 14, 1915

Eliza Jane was my gg-grandmother and I am trying to find any info on her family. What I know from family lore and her death certificate, is that she was born in Pennsylvania to a James Dumm and Elizabeth Willson. Her mother died when she was young and her father subsequently remarried. Her year of birth may be 1822 rather than 1828. She was married to Samuel Dickey of Indiana, PA around 1840 and she maintained that she was born in 1822 until Sanuel died in Indianapolis, IN in 1897. Thereafter she was adamant that she was born in 1828. Apparently this may have happened to conceal the fact that she was a child bride. Eliza died in 1915 in Chicago, IL. According to family papers, her father lived to 90 years of age and Eliza had 2 half-sisters, Allie and "Mar" who resided in Chicago, IL. I found a James Dumm who died Nov 4, 1880 in Englewood, IL (now a part of Chicago) and resided with an Alice Jarrett nee Dumm. I researched Alice and found she had a sister named Marian Sayles and they were both born in Indiana County, PA between 1840 and 1845. The 1880 census showed a James Dumm residing in Black Lick, Indiana, PA and had the following children, Alpheus, Carles, Milton, Lester, Amanda, Marian, Alice, and Mary. His wife was named Jane. Alpheus was considerably older and born in 1824. This may or may not be his son of course since the 1850 census did not determine relationships. Carles and Lester migrated to Saint Louis, MO and I found an Alpheus P. Dumm residing in Nodaway Co., MO after 1860.

If anyone sees a connection to their Dumm's, I hope to hear from you. Any info is helpful!

Hi Patricia
I've not verified anything back before Valentine Dumm and Elizabeth Sharbaugh who were our Sarah's parents but according to the Ancestry World Tree Project: Dumm, Walsh, Nace, Ochocki, and Related Families it appears that your Sarah Dumm would have been our Sarah Dumm's Great Aunt.
Your Sarah had a brother named George who was our Sarah's Grandfather.
The ancestry I mentioned above shows your Sarah married Joseph E. Eckenrode in August of 1836. and her Parents were Magdalen Arens and Valentine Dumm. (there are two Valentine Dumms). If you can access the ancestry I mentioned you'll be able to see the information they have for her. This ancestry dosen't have their children listed.
Hope this helps you
Jim

Tina:

Are you Paul's or Tim's daughter?

I am Milton, your dad's cousin. Milton and Luz were my parents. The last time I saw Tim was at the end of August 1990 at my father's funeral in Tucson. We weren't told of your grandmother's death until long after the fact. It was my stepmother Emily who finally happened to mention it, and my sister's and I were very saddened and hurt. Aunt "Cha Cha" was our favorite of Dad's sisters!

How & where are you? I'm in Santa Barbara, CA. My 3 sisters are in Los Angeles CA, Florence, Az., & Las Vegas, NV.

I'd love to hear from you soon and hope you check this message board. I was stunned to find it quite by accident tonight. Take care.

Milton Dumm

Looking for any info on Samuel Dumm born in Ohio around 1825, his family was from Pennsylvania. Samuel was found in 1880 census in Lost Creek, Vigo Co, Indiana. His wife was Elizabeth, think her last name was either Boovers or Bowers? They had George Dumm born about 1859, Ida and Nelson Wells Dumm, I think twins in 1866. Later found Nelson in Oregon. Nelson married Jessie Belle Patterson and had Clifford Dumm born in 1902 in Bonanza Oregon.
