I notice that they've changed everything and their instructions aren't very clear. You need to write them a letter, giving them as much information as you can -- name of deceased, name of county, year of death or estate settlement, book no., etc., which you have to locate somewhere yourself. One of the best sources is "Calendar of New Jersey Wills." Most volumes, maybe all now, are online free at Internet Archives. There was one I could never find online, so I eventually purchased a CD on eBay with all volumes. And Ancestry has "New Jersey Index of Wills, Inventories, Etc.", which lists some people "Calendar" doesn't. There may be other resources. This is the info I gave them for Hugh Dunn:

Hugh DUNN, of Piscataway, Middlesex County, 10 Oct 1691. Proved 10 Dec 1694. Inventory 24 Nov 1694

Sometimes I can give them a no., like 3056J, or a book and page.

If they need more money for more than 10 pages, they send a letter and you send an additional check. Snail mail. Clumsy and slow. They should use email and PayPal.

The neat thing is that they send you photocopies of both the clerk's copy of the will and the original will if both exist. In those cases what you can't read in one you may be able to make out in the other, plus you can see your ancestor's actual signature.

Unfortunately, Hugh Dunn's had no clerk's copy and was very faint, folded and torn. I suppose it's one of the oldest to survive. Very difficult to make out. I had a lot of trouble getting his. First they sent me the will of a different Hugh Dunn (some descendant), informing me that the one I requested was out for filming and would not be available for 6 months. Why they didn't just return my check, I don't know. Why would they assume the will of some other man with the same name would do just as well!!! I reordered 6 months later, and they sent me the first part of the will. It ended in mid-sentence in the 1st bequest, so I had to ask them for the rest of it. I never had any problems with any other wills I requested though. I need to order some more.

Carol Anne

MoberlyDrake--

I have looked at the website you mention (http://nj.gov/state/darm/reference.html) and indeed, it says:

"Wills and Estate Inventories, 1670-1952
$10.00 per packet, up to
10 pages; $1.00 for each
additional page"

What I could not find is any information about what wills they have available. I am also not sure what they mean by a packet.

I am not particularly interested in Hugh Dunn's will; I just would like to know in general how New Jersey wills are obtainable.
Now I'm really curious. Doing both a Google and Ancestry search for Hugh Dunn's will led me to Barbados - why? Did Dunn live there (or at least visit) in the 1680s? Someone named Robert Hyempsall of Barbados mentioned Hugh Dunn in his own will of owning "Negro Tom Dunn" so I guess the slavery question is answered, eh? I'll attach the page here, found on Ancestry through a wills search.

I have a copy. Anyone can send to the New Jersey Archives for a copy for $10. Check out the link "Mail Reference Fees" http://nj.gov/state/darm/reference.html.

His will is hard to read. I was hoping that there would be a final account settlement included in the packet as in some I have received. If there had been a payout to Thomas Runyan, it would have proven the claim that Hugh Dunn's daughter, Martha, was Thomas Runyan's wife. Since there was no account settlement included and I have found no other evidence that Thomas Runyan's wife, Martha, was Hugh Dunn's daughter, I am considering that claim an invention of Orra Eugene Monnette.

Carol Anne

Hello, does anyone know if the will of Hugh Dunn (died 1694 in Piscataway, NJ) is available to read in its entirety?

After watching the excellent PBS program "Finding Your Roots," I got to wondering if any of my own ancestors were slaveholders. Ergo, it would be necessary to see the will and not just an abstract.

ANDREW DUNN - County Tyrone to PA

Searching for the specific location in Ireland where ANDREW DUNN and his family originated. He was born in County Tyrone on March 29, 1836, and died tragically in PA on March 19, 1878. ANDREW DUNN emigrated from Ireland to the USA on or about June 27, 1853, according to his application for naturalization. He enlisted in the U. S. Army as a volunteer on or about August 4, 1862, and was mustered into company I of the 129th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers as a private. Our research about his life in Ireland has been at a standstill for years, for we can find nothing substantive. Please, can someone help us?

Mine is chalkridge@aol.com
Also, Could you send me a copy of the will or the web address where I can find it. Thanks so much.
Mike Dunn
p.s. My oral history of my Dunn lineage says that John Dunn came from England and first came to America through Charleston, SC. Right now I'm trying to continue back from Pharoah Dunn Sr Ky death record that list his parents as William and Olive. I have no documents for William or Olive. Actually, I don't have Pharoah Sr's wife documentation. I think her name is Elizabeth Holland???

We have done DNA testing on your line and you match up with my line(John Dunn,Pendleton SC) and lines from Jesse Dunn,Fairfield,SC;David Dunn of Georgia; Joel Dunn from Fairfield SC and others.

I found a Jessie in the 1930 Census also, but I am leery of saying it is my Jessie (I am hoping the 1940's Census helps); at this time, I don't know of any verified siblings.

Calvin and Jessie's divorce was started on 31 May 1946, signed on 5 Jun 1946, in Contra Costa County, California, and was finalized on 23 Jul 1947. On 31 May 1946, "Gwendolyn J. King, a daughter, aged 1 1/2 years, be, and is hereby awarded to the defendant, until further order." From that I am led to believe that Gwendolyn was born around December of 1944.
I know that Calvin joined the Army on 16 Aug 1944 at the San Francisco, California enlistment office; and his residence is listed as Contra Costa County, California.
The youngest child, Andrew Jeffrey (my father), was born in Monterey County, California, on 22 Feb 1942. The second oldest, Jonathan Wayne, was born in Contra Costa County, California, on 21 May 1943.
From all of this, I must assume that Gwendolyn was born in Contra Costa County towards the end of 1944, yet I can find no birth records.

DUNN family in Pennsylvania , Louisiana, and Ohio

I'm trying to find information about the ancestors of Charles Dunn, b. abt 1880 in New Orleans, LA. He moved to Youngstown, Ohio in the 1920's, married a woman named Marie, and had a daughter named Eleanor Susan, b. 1926, who married Al Wagner and had three children with him and then left him.
Charles's father was Charles Dunn, born abt 1838 in Ohio. He moved to New Orleans in the early/mid 1860's where he married Rosa about 1865, and had his family. He and Rosa were last listed in the 1910 Census as living in New Orleans.
I'm 99.9% certain that the above Charles was the son of William Dunn who was born in Pennsylvania abt 1794. According to the Census forms, William was married to Jemima, who was born 12 Sep 1802 in either Virginia or West VA. Both William and Jemima, along with their 11 day old son Alfred, are buried in Plants Cemetery, Meigs County Ohio.
I've searched but cannot find William's parents, although it seems likely he descended from the Dunns in CT who moved to New Jersey ( the same names keep repeating)and then to Pennsylvania. I would also like to find the last names of Jemima and Marie.
I'm hoping someone has information to share. Also, I've been told that through the Dunn side there is a Cherokee connection.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Leslie Blankschen
Hello Heather, I hope you can get farther then I have :)

1. Proof:
a. Hearsay from my father, uncle, and grandfather (who only said, "don't look into it, those two are gone" - he was referring to Jessie and Gwendolyn)
b. Divorce paperwork for Jessie and Calvin where custody of Gwendolyn was given to Jessie.
2. Jessie's actual birthday I do not have, and the marriage certificate could be off a few years since Calvin's age was four years off.

Thank you,

Tim

Re: Looking for TERRY DUNN b. 1/04/1938 Leeds uk

Hi Tracey. I came across your post while researching the Hollings family from Leeds. My father was Brian Hollings. His mother was Catherine, nee Carden, who was the sister of Winifred. Terry Dunn and his wife Mary emigrated to Australia and my family followed them out in 1971 - I seem to recall we all spent Christmas Day '71 or '72 together on Bondi Beach. Unfortunately I have no idea of Terry's whereabouts today. My father and Terry went into business together for a brief period whilst in Australia - I suspect it ended acrimoniously but can't say for certain as I didn't really pay attention to conversations about the family much when I was younger. I remember Terry's three daughters, Julie, Jane and the youngest whose name escapes me at the moment. I have some photos of Terry and my dad in RAF uniform somewhere. In fact I think I have some of the Dunns and the Hollings's in Australia as well.
I started researching my family tree about three years ago but was too busy to devote much time to it. I picked it up again a couple of weeks ago and intend to do a thorough job this time. When I can find more info I will be glad to let you know. Peter.

Her death certificate states that both of her parents were born in Mississippi. I have been told she had two brother...Howard and Golden Dunn. She married my granddad Buford (Boots) Hearon on 3/30/1923 in Paris, Tx. Rumor has it that her family was settled in Arkansas but I'm not sure about that.
Re: Alexander Dunn

Interesting. Nothing was ever mentioned to me but once by my grandmother about her father, Alexander Dunn. She told me he was killed in a fire while helping a neighbor try to put out the fire. No mention to me ever if he was an orphan as a child. My great-grandmother that married "an" Alexander Dunn was Irish protestant. Therefore, I assume, Alexander must have been from Scotland and was a Presbyterian.

Any help will be appreciated.

MBL

I am not positive where my great-grandfather Alexander Dunn lived. I do KNOW for a fact, he married my great-grandmother Mary "Minnie" Hall. She lived in Gananoque and Brockville, Canada. They had one child, my grandmother, Edith Alta Dunn. I am trying to find info about Alexander Dunn.....Hope this might be a connection.

Thanks for any info you might share.

MBLynch
