Hi Fred,
Tried to email you but it came back. I believe we've corresponded about this before; the names of Helene's parents are new to me. Wonder how I got the two other entirely different names? Anyway, would be interested in knowing where you got those. I'll try to trace where I got the names I got! Email me at emailjanehere@yahoo.com. I live nearby.
Melissa

Thank you for this answer to my query. By any chance are you related to Jean Gervaise or Anne Archambault? I would love to correspond with other relatives and compare genealogy notes. Nancy Dupuis

He is a descendant of Jean Gervaise and Anne Archambault. A granson son of Jean Gervaise. He added Dupuis to his name so Gervais dit Dupuis probably to differentiate it from one of his uncle or cousin who bore the same first name.It was common at that time. Probably he lived near a well (puits in French) that is why he took the name of Gervais du puits what became Dupuis and his descendants kept the name Dupuis he adopted when he immigrated.

I've been exploring the earlier news papers in Australia and found a Paul Dupuis in the 1950's that was an actor and found an Albert Dupuis early 1900 who got in some trouble.

Lindie (Dupuis) Chandler

Tom I am interested in the Dupuis line that you have from Amherstburg, Ontario. I have a quest to find if the Dupuis in Essex and Kent county are related or not. I have many Dupuis that go back to France as well and wondering were our ancestors meet. Actually my Dupuis were Acadian when they came from France My ancestors show Michel Dupeux from France and Martin Dupuis born in Acadia in 1665.

#18 on your list 'Jean Dupuis dit Gilbert' was married to marie-jeanne Sedilot Montreuil 11 Feb 1743. He is believed to have been born 8 Sep 1724 Rosnay, Bourges, Poitou, France. The brothers Dupuy (Dupuis) [dit Bramans], Gilbert and Jean arrived at Québec on the ship Jazon. On August 8th, 1737, after sixty days on the sea, the ship "Le Jazon" arrive at Quebec City with the Dupuis brothers Gilbert and Jean on board. They are banished to Canada because of "faux-saunage" which can be translated as dealing in contraband salt.

At this time, France had goods which were taxed such as salt. The "faux-saunage" consisted of passing salt from places where it was less costly to places where it was more costly. This tax on salt was called "la gabelle". Berry, where Gilbert and Jean were from, was one of the areas where the "gabelle" was the highest, when some of the surrounding areas were exempt. The "faux-saunage" was quite common in Berry at that time.

The two brothers were convicted for the second time for "faux-saunage", so they were banished to Canada. On their arrival, Gilbert and Jean were admitted respectively 23 and 17 days at the hospital "Hôtel-Dieu" in Quebec City. It is written in the patient register that Gilbert was 30 years old and Jean was 29 years old originating from Moulins in Berry, France.

see site http://www.gilbert.ca.tc/ for more information.

Hi Tom,
So what state do you live in and how old are you. I am 68 and in Mich. So Emma ( your Grandmother) and Reme (my Grandfather) were brother and sister. What a large family they came from. The men are rugged looking. Grandpa Ludgar, I heard was mean. My grandfather had whip scars on his back from him. Would you happen to know the occasion of this photo? My brother, Ted, says it is a reunion photo. Too dressed up for a reunion is my opinion. I have the Meloche Legacy book. It goes back to our 5th or 6th Great Grandfather. This photo is great. All my grandfathers had passed away before I was born. It is nice to see one, if only in a photo. I do have one of Reme and my father, but it was a few days before he passed and he looks absolutly ailing skinny. In this photo he is virile. Taken before he married my grandmother. My understanding is that my grandparents marriage was prearranged. She was 16 and he 32 is how the story goes. Emma is you mother. She married a Nelson. I knew Amos and distantly knew Chuck. What relation are they to you?
Thank you for responding,
Julia

Hi Tom Nelson,
I am so happy that you wrote me back. Please email me at jydmm@aol.com. I do not always get on ancestry. Today I was looking for the Champagne part of my family. Thank you for the photos. OMG!! I can see them clearly. Can't seem to copy them correctly though. Only got 1/2 of them printed. I have to discover how to change it to landscape view.
Your 2nd. cousin, Julie

Hi Julia,
Thanks for your reply. I had the same problem with Ludgere being in Louisiana, because I knew that wasn't true. After a lot of digging in the Canadian records, I discovered that his name was Ludgar, not Ludgere. That fact made it possible to trace our ancestry all the way back to Martin Dupuis, our 10th great grandfather, who was born in France in 1612. I am the grandson of Ludgar's daughter Emma, so that makes us second cousins. If you have any information on your grandmother, Reme's children, etc. that you would be willing to share, I would love to have it to add to my tree.
I have aattached two photos of the entire Dupuis family of Ludgar and Julienne that you might like to have. One has the names of everyone printed on the photo. Julienne and Ludgar are listed as Grandma & Grandpa.
If you have not looked at my tree, please feel free to do so. There are a lot of Dupuis on it. I haven't lived in Michigan for 46 years so I haven't kept in touch will a lot of the family. Even when I was a child, I don't remember meeting any of the Dupuis, probably because the family was so large and everyone had gone their separate ways. Please keep in touch.

Tom Nelson
