Durans of New Mexico and Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico

Hi! I have done a great deal of research on the Duran family of Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico - which reaches back to colonial New Mexico in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. I am at a major roadblock because I cannot find out which Duran family my ancestors came from. I have Tomas Manuel Duran (1700-1766) md bef 1727 to Ana Maria Suaso (1709-1762). On the marriage banns the parish register is shredded and I can only read that Tomas' father was ______Duran and his mother was Maria Romero. I want to know if anyone else is researching this family and if so, do you know if they were part of the Duran y Chavez family or the Duran y Armijo families out of New Mexico? Any helpful comments will be appreciated.

Sure seems like we should be related as one of my grandparents is a Kunstman and one of them a Westphal. The Kunstmans came to the US in the mid 1850s, settling in Outagamie County by way of a brief stop in Waukesha. The Westphals came in 1869 and settled in Waupaca County after a brief stay in the Manitowoc area,
Tom

Why, just out of curiousity do you refer to the father of Samuel Rains as William Abraham? Do you know something I don't? I was confused when I responded last explaining the name of Julian but he was not the one you were referring to but his father.

Julian Rains was the son of Abraham Rains from Virginia. According to my aunt Julian's given name was William and so this is why I list him always as William Julian Rains. Census takers were not always Spanish speaking and so would confuse a William with a Julian.

Yes, Maria Dolores Turcot was married to Encarnacion Armijo who were my second great grandparents.

Are you a Samuel Rains descendant? Have you considered doing a DNA test on any Rains in your family who would be a direct descendant? I'd be interested in learning what those results would be. . . .Gloria

I believe Francisca Duran and Juan Martinez are the names of my great grandparents. I am searching for information about the family. We believe my grandfather Mac was born 10/7/1884 in Uvalde County TX. Are we talking about the same people? Does anyone have any information about a family name of Palmesa?

I saw the border crossings too, but I don't think it is the same man, for several reasons.

1. Your Celso was already married to Rufina (1911) . One of the crossings indicates his "wife" was accompanying him, but Rufina's name is not listed, there are 3 other names.
2. When he completed his WWI draft registration card in 1918, he indicates he was a natural born citizen. There were no strict immigration rules then, as there are now, so he likely would not have lied on the information.
3. There were quite a few Duran families in Las Animas and Conejos counties in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Most, if not all, come from the Taos and Mora, New Mexico areas (from what I can find).

I'm sure more will show up soon. If you don't mind, I would be curious to know more when you find his parents. I'll attach my email in case you ever want to email me directly. cynthiamonroe40@aol.com
Regards,
Cynthia

Wow, Thank You!

I had looked at the "Selgo and Rufina" census. I wasnt sure so I showed it to my dad and he recognized the childrens names. And its led me to a border crossing record that left my dad feeling lied to. No harm tho, at least now we know.

We would both appreciate anything else you find! Thank you again.

I have some leads which might help you.

Celso Celestino Duran was born April 4, 1884(1) in Colorado and died about 1956 in Denver, Colorado(2). He married Rufina (Ruth) Fernandez on January 23, 1911 in Las Animas, Colorado (3). Rufina was born on March 27, 1892 (4) and died October 1990 in Aurora, Colorado (2).

Here are some of my sources:
(1). WWI Draft Reg. Card, www.ancestry.com
(2). www.familysearch.org Family Group Record (AFN:KST6:BC)
(3). Denver Public Library, Colorado Marriages, 1858-1939 CD-ROM
(4). www.ancestry.com, Social Security Death Index, record for Ruth Duran.

Granted, they are just leads, but it might give some direction. The family is also found in the 1920 US Federal Census, living in Troy, Las Animas, Colorado. I found them under "Selgo C. Duran and Rufina F. Duran".

I'll send any additional findings your way. Best of luck.
Cynthia
Thank you so much for your reply!

Unfortunately I dont know where they started out, but I know that (one of) their youngest children [Lucille] was born in Weldona, Morgan, CO.

On the 1930 census, which is all I have been able to locate, here is what is listed...

>>Weldona, Morgan, Colorado<<
Celester Duran, Head, Rented, Farm, age 40, born in CO, parents born in CO.
Ruth Duran 36
Tillie 18
Milano 15
Clemata 13
Clifie 11
Millie 9
Joe 7
Doniles 5
Steven 2
Anleay 5/12

I have been combing through other census years with the hope of finding something that "sounds like" it would be them. Several of these childrens names appear to be shortened or nicknames.
Lucille was born in 1932.

Hello,

Im looking for a husband and wife. The husband was one of the names listed in the subject... Celestino, Celester, Stelafino Duran. His wife was Ruth. These would be my great grandparents. Unfortunately, my dad wasnt very close with his family and the opportunity for oral history is gone. Too much tragedy in one family. I found "Celester Duran" on the 1930 census and with no other close match to the husbands name as well as the wifes, I have to assume for now that its a match. But I found nothing for any other census year..

They had at least 10 children. The youngest of which being my grandmother Lucille... No records for her at all. Her older brothers and sisters are on the 1930 census..

Any information, or theories would be an incredible help. Thank you in advance!
Traci

Yes, I saw the Thomas Duran in the 1920 census this afternoon. Not sure if this is my Thomas. The Thomas Duran who died in 1976, I do not believe is my Thomas. I think he died before 1947; before his wife died. I believe that he and Orilla lived in Bradford and/or Port Allegany, PA in McKean County. His wife had a beauty salon in Port A. at one time. Another of my family mysteries. Alice M. Henneberry

There is a Thomas Duran in Allegheny, PA in the 1920 Census, son of Barley and Bridget Duran (parents born in Ireland) with siblings Margaret, Catherine, and James.

I did some research on the Duran side if the family not sure which sites I got it from. I was able to go back to 1742 with Blas Duran being the furthest back. I was trying to figure out what year my family came from Spain. I was also trying to find out if there was any truth that one of my grand parents was adopted. My dad said that he thought his grandfather Elfido was. That he was originally laumbach. But I found nothing on that.
