Hi

Thought I may be able to help - but although each alternate generation of my family has been called either David or Alexander ( until me!) and all hail from Aberdeen I can't see a birth in 1904 in my history. Was it Birse in Aberdeen?

Do you know about the Durward legend of the bell of Coull castle? Hope you don't hear it!

Bye

Hi Deb, Don't go to any length to research this. I am not experienced in researching genetics and have not taken it far. I just think it is interesting that there are a lot of Durwards in Ontario which is only 20 minutes from where we live in New York. The Durward line in NY is almost dead. None of us have boys to carry on the name with the exception of one Durward boy that is in Germany who we have never seen. (product of war time affair)and there are 2 in Alabama but they are adopted. The only information I have is my GF is David and he lived in Erie County New York and his wifes name is Esther both died around 1960-1964 I only knew he worked as an electrician and was a member of the Big Tree Fire Dept. I was small when he died. He has 5 children David Jr(deceased), Paul(In New York), Bradley(deceased), Elsie(deceased) and Gerard(In Alabama). Thanks, Kathy

Hi Deb,
I'm wondering if you could provide some names regarding your findings on Canadian - Durwards. There appears to be 2 branches of Durwards who came to Ontario. My side started with James Durward who settled in Uxbridge around 1869. I would be extremely interested in your response. Thank-you!

Have you tried the 1830 census for Alabama? I took a quick peak at the index as I'm not near a library where I can look it up free. There are three McFarlane's listed for Alabama: James, Robert and Joseph. Maxwell might be a middle family name. Many Scots will use that to keep from getting confused with other family members of the same name.

According to Black's "Surnames of Scotland" the Durward spelling predominates with the Dorward spelling being more common around the Arbroath area, i.e.Angus on the East coast.
I am a Dorward from Angus and I find that on travelling North about 20 miles anyone I have to give my name to automatically writes Durward!
In fact both spellings can be found throughout Scotland and the spelling on official records is often the version the local clerk is most used to.
Hense an ancestor that I traced to Aberdeenshire is known as Durward for a time then Dorward. Two of his children born there and recorded as Durward used that spelling all their lives tight up to their death records in Toronto.
He himself is recorded in Toronto with various spellings and mis-spellings eventually settling on Dorward, the name on his grave stone.

It is usually easier to work steadily backward than to find a stand alone reference. If you can give me the names and approximates dates of marriages between yourself and Margareth Durward (or as much as you know), I'll see what I can find.

Most of the Durwards are located around the Aberdeen area on the East of Scotland. While those with the Dorward spelling are more to the west.

To reply first to your "erquart castle" point. This is Urquhart Castle on the shores of Loch Ness. You can find out more by visiting www.aboutscotland.com/ness/urquhart.htm
but the gist of this is that the castle was not built by a Durward and far from being built with money from England, it was built to defend the area from the English.
It was for a time (about 1250)in the charge of Alan Durward who was married to a daughter of Alexander 11.
I looked in the Old Parish Records section on Scotlandspeople, the official web-site of the Scottish Records Office but found no record of a Margareth Durward marrying a McFarlane which doesn't prove too much since OPRs are not complete and were never a compulsory record.
If you have no further information, particularly as to the possible location of this marriage perhaps working back from the birth or marriage of one of their children would help. I assume they were married in Scotland?

Your best bet would be to check for a marriage on Scotland's people. Given the early dates, it is likely that Margareth and Maxwell were immigrants and married in Scotland.

There is one reference in the IGI for a Walter Neville McFarlane married to Virtue MacDonald Marten on 29 Mar 1867. If this is yours then it is likely that either Margareth or Maxwell had a mother whose surname was Neville.
The office of "door ward" to the king or church was both honorable and hereditary, and in medieval Scotland it subsisted in the powerful family of "de Lundin" who migrated from Tayside to Aberdeenshire. A member of the family, Sir Alan Durward, rose to prominance and was regent of Scotland during the minority of King Alexander III in 1250. Most Durwards assume descent from functionaries at the Abbey of Arbroth. Either Durward or Dorward are interchangeable spellings of the name.

If you can get a marriage or death record from New Register House for Isabella Stott, that will give you the names of both parents. (They charge, but it isn't that expensive and you can do it online). You can then search for the parish record of their marriage. I checked my Durward marriage records for Kincardine Parish and there were several Isobel/Isabel/Isobella but none for a marriage to a Stott.

If she could read the mother's maiden name, then there is a chance you can find a marriage record for that name in the old parish records. New Register House is available on line (for an affordable fee for 24 hours of searching time).

Hi, I have traced my Durward family back as far as Peter Durret or Durward born about 1781 in Leochel Cushnie. I will try and go back further at a later date. This man had a son George Durret or Durward on 10/4/1809, he later kept the name Durward and passed it down his line of George's to me and on to my grandson.
Is there any link between us?

Hi Scott,

What I have to say is probably too long to put on a notice board reply so I will summarise here and communicate in more detail directly.

You are looking for a James Durward in Scotland. Well there are a couple of problems but they are not insoluble.

First is the area in Scotland. Although a small country Scotland is (was) divided into many counties and these were divided into many more Parishes. Fortunately the International Genealogical Index uses the old counties as a base so it is possible to search manually through the IGI on microfiche … if you know where to start looking.

A clue to that in respect of Dorward/Durward or the other spellings is that the main spellings are more common in, but not exclusive to, particular areas so it would be practical to confirm that your search is for Durward rather than another spelling.

Dorward is most common where I live in Angus but I only have to drive 20 miles North to Kincardineshire to find that I will automatically be called Durward.

I suggest that you invest £6 (6GBP) in a session on ScotlandsPeople www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to see if you can find your James in the 1841/51 or even 61 censuses.

Rgds

Bruce Dorward

Angus, Scotland

Hello Scott,
If your James was born in Kincardin Scotland I might be able to give you a clue. My GGF was a Richard Durward, he had a brother James, who had a son by his wife Margaret 23rd May 1821. As eldest sons are often names after the father could this be the father of your James. You will find this information in the Parochial Register of Fetteresso Kincardin. Good luck my brick wall is Richard

Follow this link and it will tell you the complete history of the last name Durward. Even how it was derived from the famous DeLundie family.

http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/htol/lundin3.html

I am searching my family history and have a brick wall at 1842. I am trying to find out the connection from Canada to Scotland. My great grandfather was James Durward born 1842 and he married twice. Once to Elizabeth Ann Oliver and again to Sarah Ellen Spoffard.

I can forward a copy of my present tree to the right person if we think we can make the bridge across the water nack to Urquhart Castle.

Hello Thomas,
Do you happen to have information relative to the parents or siblings of your Jean DURWARD? I have Elizabeth DURWARD who would have been born around 1795 based on her MI. She married in Brechin and after marriage, moved to Dalkeith, Midlothian. I've been unable to locate her parents, but understand that some of my DURWARD kin immigrated to Australia, probably in the 1800's. My Elizabeth named one of her daughters Jean.

Many thanks,

Elizabeth/Betty Molavi
