Re: Stanley Dutton-Pegram, Vice-Consul in Torreon, Mexico

Dear Nancy

My grandmother Dorothy Pegram married to CVM Townsend was the cousin of Stanley Dutton Pegram. She was the daughter of Thomas Pegram the elder brother of Stanley the father of your grandfather. Their mother was Alicia Dutton – hence Dutton Pegram. My grandmother had a portrait of a Roger Dutton an 18th century ancestor who farmed in Cheshire. The Pegrams were from around Liverpool.

In 1983 I visited Emma Pegram, your grandfather's widow and her daughter Phyllis and her family in Torreon. I believe it was the year your aunt Margarita died in Monterey. I saw a photo of her. She looked very like my aunt Celia.

I remember Emma Pegram telling me that she and Stanley used to visit a lot of haciendas to buy alfalfa which they exported to Scandinavia where it was used for cattle feed. On one occasion Pancho Villa and his posse rode in and he wanted to get a shave. He would only entrust his gun to the Englishman – your grandfather. Maybe you have heard this already. I guess we are 3rd cousins.

Your sincerely

David H Yeats
33 North Street
Shrewsbury
SY1 2JJ

Posting on this message board was just a "shot in the dark", so to speak. I am actually quite surprised to get an answer.

My info on Asa Dutton is really scant; he married a woman, "Phrene" and they had a child, Phrene Dutton b. NH. No clue after that, but Asa's sister, Sarah Dutton m. Asahel Stiles and they resided in Steuben Co., NY. In addition, Asa's brother, Jacob, though living out his life in NH, had children who lived in Pike and Wyoming counties in NY including my ancestor, Dr. Andrew Dutton. All other children of Josiah & Sarah Dutton seeme to have remained in NH. Don't know whether this helps.
B. Dutton Biddlecome

Where did Asa Dutton come from?

Asa Dutton was born 1783 in Vermont and was residing in Plainfield, Otsego Co, New York by 1810 when he appears on that census along with an older Asa Dutton. He is in Otsego County in 1820 and then moved to Georgetown, Madison County, by 1830 where he died in 1850.

From piecing together the family I *suspect* he may be the son of Asa Dutton Sr., who's wife may have been Lydia and his wife's name may have been Mary -- just based on naming of children.

The info I have is Lemuel being born in Fairfield County, Ohio Jan 9, 1828. He married Nancy Stall but have no date for that. All I have on Nancy is that she was born in Pennsylvania in 1810. I have the children listed as John Dutton born Aug 8, 1828; Martin B Dutton born 1833; Abraham Dutton born 1843; Mary Dutton born Dec 23, 1836; Sarah E. Dutton born 1842; Mildred Dutton born 1844. I have info on their marriages if this is your line. Will gladly share any more info. My line comes through John Dutton on my mother's side. John was her grandfather.
Susannah Dutton who married John Fassett 1809 in NH

I apologize for the length of this posting but I wanted to try this as a way to ask for help and feedback for one of my brick wall people, Susannah Dutton who married John Fassett on Oct. 1, 1809 in Winchester, Cheshire, NH. I have been searching for a record or something for who her parents are. I have a tree posted that has a birthdate for her of 15 May 1781 that I originally got from several other trees I found on the web. Following is my regrettably long question and request for help:
I believe I may have been mistaken in using the birthdate of 1781 for Susannah Dutton who married John Fassett in 1809. I am speculating that she may have been born later, maybe around 1789?. Here are my reasons: As far as I can tell, the birthdate of 1781 is taken from a well documented family of Amasa Dutton who married Sarah Parmalee and named one of their children Susannah (they also had an earlier child named Susannah who died very young). The name and general place of birth etc. seemed to fit "our" Susannah Dutton. However, I am bothered by the marriage records I found for this "1781 Susannah Dutton" to a William Crane. I found one record that says the 1781 Susannah Dutton married on June 17, 1802 [when she was 21 years old] (History of Royalton, Vermont by Mary Evelyn). Then, on the Family Search website I found a record of "William Crane, birth 1780, Vermont marriage 17 June 1802 in Royalton, Windsor, Vermont to Susannah Dutton, born 27 Sep 1781 in Royalton, Windsor, Vermont, married on 17 June 1802 in Royalton, Windsor, Vermont." I also found another mention of this couple at archive.org; paraphrasing - Ebenezer Crane, wife Thankful Bickmore, 3rd child William, m. Susan Dutton, Jan. 23, 1805, at Alstead, N.H. Recently I also found a web site at: http://www.utahpioneers.net/genealogy/individual.php?pid=I48... up to 25 May 2009.ged that also links the "1781 Susannah" of Amasa Dutton & Sarah Parmelee to William Crane. The marriage date for Susannah to John Fassett is 1809, that we know for sure. That would make her 28 when she got married to John. Not impossible but a late marriage for those days never-the-less. They appear in the 1810 Census, one year after marriage, with just the two of them. I suppose she could have married William Crane, got divorced or he died maybe (I can't find anymore information about him as of yet) and they had no children, otherwise you would expect to find the children on the 1810 census as step-children to John, maybe? Anyway, these are just my own thoughts and speculations and I welcome any feed-back and most especially any information about her ancestors. I am continuing to try to find more information on who Susannah Dutton's parents might have been as I don't feel settled yet about attaching her to the Amasa Dutton/Sarah Parmalee couple. I am concentrating on Dutton faimilies that lived in the Winchester, Cheshire, NH area around 1790-1810. That seems like a good place to start but if anyone knows anything I'd very much appreciate it. Thank you (if anyone is still reading this).
