Dyke descendants in Montreal & Toronto, Canada

I am the Grandson of Ernest Harold Dyke and I live in Shropshire, England. I am trying to trace descendants from my Grandfather’s side of the family living in Toronto and Montreal, Canada.

Here are some facts about the family:

My Grandfather’s Brother, Herbert Jeffrey Dyke (1884 – 1974), my Great Uncle, was born in Langley Burrell, Chippenham, Wiltshire, England and immigrated with his wife and son to Canada in Dec 1912. He was a Mechanical Engineer and worked for the Union Pacific Railway in Canada and he is buried in Toronto, Ontario.

Florence Mabel Dyke (Ham) (1885 – 1939) was born St Saviour, Southark, London, Surrey, England and she is buried in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Florence and Herbert married June 1909, Kensington, London, England;

Herbert and Florence had four children:
Colin Herbert Dyke (1911 - ?) born 07 May 1911 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England and died (no date) in Longueuil, Quebec, Canada. He was married to Mrs D Dyke (no other details known).

Daisy Elizabeth Dyke (1917 – 1993) born Montreal, Quebec, Canada and she is buried in Toronto, Ontario, Canada;

Phyllis Florence Dyke born about 1915, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

John Morley Dyke, born about 1921, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He was married but I don’t know any other details regarding his wife.

My Great Uncle Herbert had many visits back to England and I remember meeting him in 1956 when he came over to see his brothers and sisters. He lived at 88 Woodside Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, Canada (well he lived there in 1945). Another address I have is for Colin Herbert Dyke which is 7 Argyle Ave, St Lambert PQ, Montreal, Canada (well he lived there in 1942). Yes, I know a long time ago, but it may ring some bells.

I know he had a granddaughter who lived in Montreal and again I met her when she visited my Grandparents and Parents in Shifnal, Shropshire, England, this would be about 1969 or 1970, unfortunately I can’t remember her name.

I did think about advertising in the newspaper, but not sure which are the best ones to use; can anyone help?

I am looking to connect with family members. Please feel free to contact me.
Kemsing

Most of the names in the above two families agree with known names passed down orally to 2 people I have corresponded with in the past 10 years both descendants, via different branches 1 ending in Washington State USA, the other in BC, Canada. Thus there is a fairly high degree of confidence in Jane and Richard's pedigree.

The following information, somewhat condensed has been passed to me by my US contact:

Richard Cheeseman had joined the Hudson Bay Company in about 1849 and shortly afterwards had been assigned to Fort Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and purchased some 5 acres of land in the settlement (only a few years after the Island became a British Colony under agreement with the US government). In 1852, Richard returned home to marry Jane and immediately the pair sailed in the HBC ship "Norman Morison" for Fort Victoria. During the voyage, Jane gave birth to her first child, reputedly in a severe storm, whilst rounding Cape Horn. They arrived at Fort Victoria in January 1853. Soon Richard obtained a release from the HBC, bought more land in the area north of Fort Victoria. Richard and Jane built a home and a Hotel they called "Royal Oak". By 1860 Jane and Richard had four children, but in 1862 Richard was killed when his horses bolted. Jane lived on to marry twice more. She died on August 20th 1897 and is buried at St Stephen's Anglican Church.

donald mcarthur relative or mary ann dyke/reeves

Hi,
My name is Christopher Dyke of Vancouver BC, born in Montreal Canada. Seems there were quite a few Dykes in the early days of both Canadian and American English settlers.
Interesting story about Anthony and the pirates. My line of Dyke arriving in NFLD was William, in mid 1700s. I had read the Dyke name originated in Northern England too, near the Scot border region. There seems to be a later history around the Bath, England area in Southern England as well. There is a Dyke family crest, indicating some were in employ as knights of certain land-owners or duchies. But I have little detail or confirmations. If you have any detail you think of interest, please contact me at your convenience at my personal e-mail: ocean2@telus.net.

All the best,
Christopher Dyke
Vancouver, BC, Canada
ocean2@telus.net

PS: in those days, many were illiterate and spelled even their own family names phonetically. Dykes were likely peoples that lived/originated near a regional dyke to hold back water. Dyke, Dike, Dykes, Dikes, Dyx, etc., were varied as a result I believe of spelling phonetically.

From what my Father has told me Anthony Dike (originally Dyx) came to the colonies in 1624 i think it was to Virginia. He was from Northern England. He was killed by a pirate. I can't remember the name of the pirate though. But i do know he had several children

Bill (William) H. Dyke, 83, of Warren, Pa.son of.George H. and Mary Lee E. Seekings Dyke.

Bill (William) H. Dyke, 83, of Warren, Pa., died Sunday morning, October 30, 2011, at his residence. He was born in Warren, Pa. on March 18, 1928, to the late George H. and Mary Lee E. Seekings Dyke. He grew up in North Warren and in his high school sophomore year started working at the former Harvey and Carey Drug Store where he became an Apprentice Pharmacist. He attended the University of Buffalo with original intentions of becoming a pharmacist but abandoned that for a career in business and marketing. He joined Household Finance Corporation in Erie and later served as manager of the Meadville and New Castle, Pa. offices doubling the size and volume of both offices under his leadership. In 1956 he organized and founded Try-M Finance in Warren at 210 Liberty Street where over the next twenty years the company grew to nine offices in Northwest Pa. communities. The finance company was sold to First National Bank of Mercer in 1976, which changed the name to FNB and still operates the branch from the original location. In 1962 he and four others acquired Hillcrest Development Corporation, a 300 acre plot in North Warren. Four of those had built the only existing homes in the development area. He served as business manager, secretary-treasurer with new homes continuing to be built resulting in the Hillcrest area today. The BBDD Oil Company was formed where he served as president, resulting in a producer being acquired for an unused area of the development. During that same period he with others built the first Ponderosa Steakhouse in Meadville as well as a building for American General Life Insurance. In 1968 under the name of W.H. Dyke, Financial Enterprises he acquired property now occupied by the expanded Thorne's BiLo Market. In 1973 he acquired O.K. Service and Sunset Mobile Home Park in North Warren. In 1975 he and partner Howard Jarvis established a laundromat, Cottage Cleaning Center on Pennsylvania Ave. property he had earlier acquired. The building and business were lost in a multi-building fire at Reliable Furniture Company in 1976. Dyke proceeded to acquire the adjacent properties of Reliable and Daley's Diner, where he, with a Meadville Associate, brought the first Burger King Restaurant to Warren. In 1976 he helped organize and charter the original Cargo Auto Parts Co. in a building he owned in North Warren. Following the sale of Try-M, Dyke pursued a dream to become an Instructor Trainer of Dale Carnegie Courses. After a year of preparation and training in Pittsburgh, he embarked upon a career that covered 32 years and one hundred fifty 12-14 week classes across the northern part of Pennsylvania. Graduates numbered nearly 6,000. During that period Dyke influenced and helped train about a dozen instructors. In 1981 he was honored by being chosen Instructor of the Year. In 2007 he was inducted into a group known as "Elite Seven" Instructors and in 2008 was inducted into the Carnegie Instructor Hall of Fame. During his career Dyke served as an officer and director of the Jaycees and Kiwanis clubs in Meadville, New Castle, and Warren. In that capacity he was instrumental in establishing and constructing the Riverfront Sign, "Warren Wishes You A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year" as well as the annual Fourth of July parade and other Jaycee projects. In the year 2006-07, he was named Kiwanian of the Year. In Warren he served on several community groups including United Way and the YMCA and North Warren Volunteer Fire Dept.'s building funds. In 1958 Dyke and others organized and chartered the Warren Aviation Club at the old Warren Airport. The club continues after 53 years at the Brokenstraw Airport in Pittsfield, Pa. During that period, Dyke privately owned several aircraft with partner, Dr. John Huey and one with Dr. Walter Jones. Dyke's commitment to his church, First Presbyterian of Warren, encompasses 55 years where he has been active over many years in serving as a Deacon and Elder. He was a past president of the Presbyterian Men's Association, Superintendent of Junior High Sunday School where he taught ninth grade Communicants classes and served as a leader in various projects and committees. More recently he was chairman of the Farmer's Market project over a period of 10 years. During that period Farmer's Market proceeds topped $70,000 in funds to the Presbyterian World Hunger Program. He was a member of the Congregational Life Committee of the Lake Erie Presbytery for a six year period. He was an active member of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life First Presbyterian Church team. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Eleanor "Ellie" Mabon Dyke, whom he married October 4, 1947 near Plumer, Pa.; five children - Sharon Marchioli and husband, Tony, of The Colony, Texas, Laurence E. Dyke and wife, Gale, of Whitehall, Michigan, Thomas L. Dyke and wife, Kathy, of Waterford, Pa., Rev. John W. Dyke and wife, Martha, of Erie, Pa., Ronald E. Dyke and wife, Judi, of Pensacola, Fla.; one sister - Jean Krieg of Warren, Pa.; 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grother - Richard J. Dyke; and one great-grandson - Chase William Anderson. Friends may call at the Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home, Inc., 304 East Street, Warren, PA on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 300 Market Street, Warren, PA with The Rev. Ellie Johns, Pastor, officiating. Those wishing to place memorials may do so through Hospice of Warren County, 2 Crescent Park, Warren, PA 16365 or the First Presbyterian Church, 300 Market Street, Warren, PA 16365 or the Warren Unit of the American Cancer Society , 2 Crescent Park, Warren, PA 16365.
(in the Erie Times-News on October 31, 2011 .)

The area they came from has been listed as Poland, Ukraine, Ruthenia, Austria, Hungary, Australia, and Scotland. The Dyki surname is native to an area that was part of the Austria-Hungarian empire called Ruthenia. This area is located on the borders of present day Poland and Ukraine.

Therefore, depending on the person, you may see all of these variations. Most of them came from Ruthenia. Check Wikipedia for a really good history of the region.

Re: dyki

Here's what I found out about the name while researching my own grandparents.

Different documents show different places of birth for persons with the name Dyki. There are also multiple transcription (or understanding) errors made on the official documents. From my research, country of birth has been listed as Poland, Ukraine, Ruthenia, Austria, Hungary, Australia, and Scotland. The Dyki surname is native to an area that was part of the Austria-Hungarian empire called Ruthenia. This area is located on the borders of present day Poland and Ukraine. In the 1880's and early 1900's the area was represented most commonly as Ruthenia.

My grandfather, from Wayne, Michigan, went by William Dyki. But of course William doesn't really fit. I finally discovered his first name was Wasyl. My father's generation changed the surname to Dyke.

Hi--My full name is Harold Joseph Dicks My family came out to Newfoundland 1600's or 1700's. My ancestor Henry appears in Nfld 1791. records in Nfld at that time were either scarce or non existent. Can't find any record of parents or origin. I have had my DNA done and all indications are Welsh. Both my anc. Henry and his bro Christopher named thier first son Joseph and first dau Frances. As I understand the naming process this would indicate these are the names of thier parents. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been at this a long time Harold

Obit for a daughter of Calista (DYKE) BATES, Miranda (BATES) PARMELEE

A descendant of Calista (Dyke) Bates has e-mailed me that this is the name of Miranda Bates's mother. Found this person when I noticed that she had sent in a corrected spelling for Parmelee in an Ancestry.com census listing. I already had Calista as Miranda's mother, but not the maiden name. The following obit was with others in the family Bible of Harvey Parmelee and Arzina Drake. The family can be seen in my www.rootsweb.com family tree called "harrietslines." See http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

Bristol Herald, Bristol, VT. no date on newspaper clipping, but clearly published after May 16, 1917.

“Mrs. Miranda C. PARMELEE
Mrs. Miranda C. (BATES) PARMELEE, after having been an invalid for twelve years and confined to her bed for the past twenty-two months, passed to her reward May 14, 1917, aged 76 years, at her home one and one-half miles west of Bristol village, which she entered as a bride fifty-six years ago.
She was born in the town of Westford, Vt., February 27,1847. [Note: this should be 1841, otherwise she would not have been 76 at death, the 1900 census would be wrong, and she would have been scandalously young at her marriage.] Her early life was spent in Irasburg, moving to Bristol in 1860. In 1861 she married Dorus S. PARMELEE, who she survived by twenty-five years. Six children were born to them, three of whom are now living to mourn her loss, Clayton H. of South Boston, Durward B. and Rosina H. who have always lived with her on the home farm. She also left three grandchildren, Marion T. PARMELEE of South Boston, Gertrude PARMELEE and Merritt ALLEN, who also live at the homestead, and one sister, Mrs. M.E, HUGHES of South Boston.
The funeral services were held at her late home on Wednesday, May 16, at 1:30 o’clock. A large number of friends and relatives assembled to pay the last tribute of love and respect to the deceased.
The floral offerings were many and beautiful and this seemed eminently fitting since Mrs. PARMELEE was a genuine lover of nature and during her lifetime always cultivated the flowers in and around her home, thus making it a cheery and happy place. Only those who knew her best could possibly realize her fondness for flowers.
Rev. Thomas B. HUGHES, the present pastor of the First Baptist church, of which she was a member, read a most impressive Scripture lesson of selected passages entitled “The Righteous Dead.” Rev. Ernest M. HOLMAN of Fairfield, Maine, a former pastor at Bristol spoke very simply and briefly from the text, Rev. 7:17. He offered a personal tribute to the deceased by these suggestions, namely: “The good friend and neighbor.” “The good mother,” and “The good Christian.” In closing the address a favorite poem was given:
Abide with me, fast falls the eventide......(full quote of this hymn followed)
In the spring sunshine our sister, mother and friend was laid to rest with impressive committal services in the family lot in Greenwood cemetery.
Those from out of town who attended the funeral were: G.H. PARMELEE, Phelps, N.Y.; C.H. PARMELEE, South Boston; Rev. E.M. HOLMAN, Fairfield, Maine; S.S. DRAKE and wife, Wooster, Carried BATES, Rutland; Fred Tomlinson and wife, Jericho; Brainerd LANE and wife and Floyd KEYS and wife, Middlebury; Mrs. Ernest EDDY and Mrs.EDDY, Starksboro; E. A. LEE, Vergennes, and Willard PARTCH and wife, Hinesburg.

I'm looking for some information about Josie or Josephine Dyke. She was born about 1860 in Arkansas with the 1880 Cencus (District 298, Cotton Plant, Woodruff, Arkansas, page 8) stating her Father was born in Arkansas, Mother in Tennessee.

She married John W Wilson (1852-1911) in 1880 and they had one daughter, Mary Wilson (1882-1972).

Other than the 1880 Census, I can find no evidence of her even existing. I can't even confirm her maiden name as only my Great Aunt has told this to me and it can't be verified.

Anyone with any information?

Dear JaneAustin
Your message seeking Dyke connections had me enthralled.
I am researching the Dyke family as my Father was Alexander macgregor Dyke but he was born in Battersea, London,England but was reared in Reigate. In his genealogical records he has a relation dating back to 1835 named Thomas who in turn had a brother named Jesse, they were born in Kemsing in Kent. Their Mothers name was Ann and she came from Snodland in Kent.
It is strange that these names appear in both our lines. Do you think that there could be a connection?
Hoping to hear from you
Erica McAdam
Thomas Jesse Dyke - Somerset

My GG.Grandfather,Thomas Jesse Dyke born about 1815 married Susannah Gatehouse (?date). Their daughter, my G.Grandmother Emma Maria Dyke was born in Somerset, England Dec.11,1843. They emmigrated to Pickering County, Ontario, Canada around 1844 and had three more children: Henry, George Wellington and Pricilla. They moved to Goderich Township, Huron County, Ontario by 1871 and lived near Clinton, Ontario. Thomas Jesse Dyke died June 1, 1894 and I am unable to find death registration but had the obituary from newpaper. His son George Wellington Dyke married Margaret Torrance, and she is buried in Maitland Cemetery, Goderich, Ontario along with their daughter Grace Doty but George is not buried there. Rumor had it he went to California. 1901 census shows Margaret, Henry, Pricillia and Albin living in Goderich, Ontario. In my research I have tried to follow up Annie Dyke who married Albin Rawlings who I think was a cousin of Thomas Jesse Dyke. Annie was daughter of Nathaniel and there is info on them in Lambton County Archives, Wyoming Ontario. Albin Dyke's name appears in the Pioneer Roundup - Grand Prarie, Alberta. Sound familiar to anyone?

Do you have any information regarding Amanda and America Dyke's parents? I know their mother is buried in the same cemetery with America but I have been unable to find any information about their father.

My husband is a descendant of John and Amanda Davison through their daughter Clarissa. I would be happy to share what I have been able to find and confirm.

Thanks for any help you can offer regarding the Dyke family.

I am looking for any Dyke families in Somerset.
Louisa ABBOTT was married to HENRY MORGAN and they had several children, Including ANNIE DYKE MORGAN
The trouble is that she was born in 1864-65. but her "father" Henry had been dead before the 1861 census.
In the 1871 census, Annie is described as 5 yrs .
I don't think Henry Morgan can be the father.
Yet, she has this second name of Dyke. None of the earlier Morgans or Taylors had used the Dyke name, so I am wondering if ther might be a Dyke around at that time.
They lived in West Stower and Todber. her pesumptive mother, Louisa Abbott Morgan is buried in Oxford.

My (very) distant relative, John Wesley Shepley (1889-1980) married twice. Second time to a woman named "Vivian V. --?--" (1897-1983). I am wondering if perhaps this Vivian was the daughter of Thomas Alexander & Lona Sams Dyke? John W. and Vivian married sometime after 1930 because he is living (widowed) with his 3 sons in Charles City, Floyd Co., Iowa according to the 1930 census. Any help appreciated.

Diane

Lesley,
In addition to my first reply on your other search. I believe the two may be connected. I have a Selina Charlotte Webb marrying Edwin Henry Dyke in 1865 and producing Rosina Eleanor Dyke plus another daughter and five sons. One of the sons was my grandfather.
