John Earhart (1777-1851) of Pike County, Ohio
BACKGROUND: Ohio only had enough people to apply for statehood in about 1800, and was admitted as a state in 1803. It was still a primitive area at that time in most areas. The period from 1800 to 1820 was the early settlement period for most of Ohio, when basics like surveying, and roads, and post offices, and towns, and schools, and churches, were being started, not to mention the early clearing of the forests into farms. John Earhart was one of those early pioneers in Brown County (then Clermont), Ohio, which is on the southern tier of counties of Ohio, with the Ohio River as its southern boundary and Kentucky its neighbor to the south. Cincinnati is about 100 miles to the west.
_________________

BIO-SKETCH Pages 556-7 of Beer's History of Brown Co, Ohio, recalls John and Martha Earhart:

"John Earhart, born Oct 11, 1777, in the state of Pennsylvania, came here (Brown Co, OH) in the spring of 1815 (at age 38), and purchased the farm on which he ever afterward lived, located southwest of Locust Ridge, now the property of George F. Moyer, and present residence of Lydia Thompson. Although he spent much of his time on his farm tilling the soil, he was a cooper by trade, and timber being plenty and of little value until manufactured into implements of utility, the profits of his labor were such as to enable him to live comfortably and happily.

He died in Feb, 1851, and was laid to rest in the little family graveyard on the farm. His sons - Adam, David, John, and William - are still living (when this history was written, which was 1883) Adam and William being present residents of the township. The former was born in Lancaster Co., Penn; came with his father to Ohio when boy not yet four years old, and lived at home until he married and moved on the farm on which he now lives; he also purchased part of the homestead of his father, which joined his first purchase. He (Adam) is in his seventy-first year, and has always made farming his occupation. William was born five years after his father settled at the old home. He, like his father, is a cooper, but does not work much at his trade of late."

Note: Apparently Google Books won't scan and present the contents of this 128 year old book because it has been reprinted by Higginsons. When you search for this book in Google Books all you will find is an ad and link to Higginsons web page. I'm not sure how a reprinter gets copyright protection for merely copying a work in the public domain, but I'm not a lawyer. Maybe Google is just concerned with being sued.

_______________

MILITARY - WAR OF 1812

John would have been of age to have been in the War of 1812. He is listed in a muster roll for one month with Jasper Shotwell. See:

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.earhart/293/mb.ashx

His boys would have been of age to have served in the Mexican - American War (1846-48), but, again, I have no evidence that any of them were. However, several of John's grandsons were in the Civil War.
_____________________

NOTES

Note that Benjamin is not mentioned as son of John in the biographical sketch in Beer's History of Pike Co, OH, but was mentioned in his will. By 1880, Benjamin has been gone from Pike County, OH for more than 20 years.

A cooper is one who makes barrels and casks.

A biography of son Adam Earhart, in Beer's History of Pike Co, OH, says John's wife's name was Martha, but no clues yet as to her maiden name.

Adam's biography says that John and Martha had 12 children. I have only accounted for nine. If there were 12 children,. I may be missing a branch or branches of descendants!

Per Beer's History of Brown Co, OH: "In the western part of the township, religious services were held at the residences of John Earhart and others as early as 1824, by Rev. Beck, a Methodist minister."

The location of the Earhart home place, which is where John and Martha Earhart are buried, is: left off of Oakland-Locust Ridge Road just before the Locust Ridge city limits. The cemetery has been pastured and neglected for years, all the stones were down and broken in many pieces in 1976, when the Brown County Cemetery Index was made.

The David buried at Earhart Cemetery No 1 was could be a younger brother of John Earhart, but there is an age issue. The David in 1840 census was 50-60 years old, ie born 1780-1790. The David in Earhart Cemetery No 1 was born 1796. (Died 06/09/1868, age 72-3-21, per headstone inscription)

I have accounted for 653 descendants, including spouses, to date (Dec 2011), but I have lots of missing downlegs. There could well be several thousand descendants of this pioneer couple.

BROWN CO HISTORY / BEERS Pg 563. "In the western part of the township, services were held at the residences of John Earhart and others as early as 1824, by Rev Beck, a Protestant Methodist."
___________________

SECOND MARRIAGE John Earhart, wid, 31 Aug 1843, married Elizabeth Ogden, wid (Clermon Co, Probate Court Marriage Records, Vol 3, pg 338). His wife shown in the 1850 census, the first census with names of members of the household, showed his wife in 1850 to be Elizabeth.
___________________

HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS OF BROWN CO, OH, Carl N. Thompson, Pg 28, under History of Pike Twp: ".... , ...., John Earhart, from Pennsylvania, ..., .., were among the early pioneers of this township."

Also, in the same reference, pg 121, a possible sibling/cousin of John: "The first house in the town of Decatur was ... assisted by Henry Earhart ( circa 1801)."

Another possible sibling/cousin is at pg 513: Elizabeth Earhart, born in Chester Co, PA n May 30, 1776 and died Sep 4, 1843; married Absolom Day.

This same reference makes mention, on page 964, that the Earharts were amongst those who helped in the construction of the Union Plains E. U.B Church, about three miles north of Mt. Orab, OH, on US Route 68, in the small village of Greenbush.

________________

Is This Earhart a Relative?: George Earhart who m. Elizabeth Fanchon:

On page 685 of Beer's 1883 History of Brown County, a sketch is given of a George Earhart. Wife = Elizabeth Fanchon; children: John, George, Samuel, Huldah, Tryphena, Mary, Sanford, Sarah, and Peggie. (Samuel is listed twice, do not know if it is two individuals, or a mistake). I have not connected this Earhart to our John.

According to Beer's, this George settled in Sterling Twp in 1799 or 1800. His son, John, settled in Williamsburg, Clermont Co.

__________________

WILL - See:

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.earhart/294/mb.ashx

War of 1812 - Ohio Website > John Earhart of Clermont County

The State of Ohio maintains a (free) website the source of which is:

Roster of Ohio Soldiers in the War of 1812. Adjutant General of Ohio. Transcription, 1916. R973.524471 A2.

http://www.ohiohistory.org/resource/database/rosters.html

At the bottom of web page 121 and top of web page 122, are a list of men who served from August 24, until September 24, 1812, in a unit of unknown county, headed by a Capt Daniel Kain.

http://www.ohiohistory.org/onlinedoc/militaryroster/1812/txt...

http://www.ohiohistory.org/onlinedoc/militaryroster/1812/txt...

On the second page are listed:

John Earhart
Jasper Shotwell

________________________

In an endeavor to find the county that this unit could belong to, I refer to the subscription service ancestry.com's database for early 1800 Ohio Tax Lists (many of early 1800's US Federal Census records for Ohio have been lost), and find:

http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=3567

Capt John Kain - in Clermont Co, Ohio, 8 tax lists from 1806-1810
John Earhart - in Clermont Co, Ohio, 8 tax lists from 1806-1810
Jasper Shotwell - in Clermont Co, Ohio, 7 tax lists from 1806-1810.

I also looked up some other members of the unit at random and found all but one of this sample to be from Clermont Co. The one who wasn't from Clermont Co was from Washington Co.

Note that Brown County was later formed from Adams and Clermont Counties.

____________________

Conclusion: That this John Earhart is the John Earhart found in the 1820 census in Williamsburg Twp, Clermont Co, Ohio and in 1830-1850 censuses in Pike Twp, Brown Co, Ohio (probably did not move - different locations likely from boundary change).

These two men had descendants who included 3 children from Benjamin Earhart who married 3 grandchildren of Jasper Shotwell (children of John Shotwell). (Unless the Jasper Shotwell in the War of 1812 muster list is a child or grandchild of the Jasper Shotwell, patriarch of the Clermont /Brown County Shotwells (1757-1816))

Benjamin Earhart md Sarah Shotwell, 2nd wife
Adam Earhart md Nancy Shotwell
John Earhart md Margaret Shotwell

I am descended from the above Benjamin Earhart and his first wife, Rebecca Donalson.

I find other references for John Earhart and Jasper Shotwell in this War of 1812 website, but haven't been able to ascertain if they are the same men, so I don't know if they spent anymore than the one month of this muster roll in the War of 1812.

My web page for John Earhart is:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&d...

Any information on his ancestry would be appreciated.
"Caty" was b. abt 1759. Her parents were Rev. Philip Jacob Ehrhart and Maria Catharina Schremer. Philip's father was Philip Reinhard Ehrhart.

I think "Caty" was not actually there in the 1820 census, but the family owned the land. His son Philip moved to Davidson Co. TN and had children. His son Rev. Abraham Ehrhart married Catherine Forney and had NO CHILDREN.

So something is off. I do not think this is your connection.

There is a lot of Earharts, several different families, that lived in TN. I would search though those records in TN.
Birth I have as about 1846 per 1880 and 1910 Census. The death I show is Dec 13, 1937 in Bridgeport, Lawerence, IL. I will be picking up some family geneology information from my mother that was given to her by her Great Aunt Audrey and will check the dates on that as well. I haven't scanned any pictures yet, but we do have some of Grandmother Nancy Earhart. I will keep you in mind and send you a picture.

SheriLJensen
Thank you for all the great information, Sheril! I have added it to my database. Do you have the exact dates of birth and death for Charlotte Wagner? I show her as being born 'abt. 1850,' which is four years difference from you. Unfortunately, I didn't document where I got that information, so I don't know how much to believe it.

If you find out more info, please keep me informed. I just love filling in those boxes in Family Tree Maker.

Caty Earhart, Lincoln, NC

I need some info. on the Earharts of Lincoln, NC.
I have just gotten into the Earharts. David Willis married Catherine Earhart in 1840 in Carroll Co. TN.
In 1860, my Great grandfather, Richard Rone is 11 yrs. old and living with David and Catherine. His parents were in the 1850 census, James Rone and Sarah, Richard 2, in Henderson Co.TN. I assumed that Catherine Willis was Richard's grandmother, but at the time I didn't know about the 1840 Marriage. I could not find an Earhart family nearby. I do not have my files with me right now but I believe Catherine was 10 yrs. older than David Willis(who was not old enough to be Sarah's father). It seems to me that Catherine Earhart Willis was a widow at the time of marriage to David.
There is not other mention of a Catherine Earhart so I checked NC and found a Caty Earhart, owner of slaves in the 1820 census of Lincoln, NC and she is living with Wm. D. Abernathey. There are 3 women, one is 10-16 and two are over 45. Can you tell me anything about this family and a connection?
Was Catherine married to an Earhart? I know nothing about Earharts in Lincoln, NC.
Guessing Sarah b. abt. 1825 and Catherine abt. 1800.
Abernathy b. in 1770.
Thanks, Evelyn
I am interested in finding descendants of Joseph Earhart. He had a daughter, Joe Ellen Earhart, who married Larkin Pinkney Beavert in Jack County, Texas, in 1879. Larkin fought with Stirrman's outfit (Arkansas) in the CSA and also was a Texas Ranger in the Frontier Forces in 1874. I am trying to locate a photograph of this Larkin Beavert. Thanks for your help.

I found the following information on Adam Airhart possible brother of Simon and Wihelm brother of Adam. I have two christening records. Wihelm was christened 9 May 1756 in Dutch Reformed Church, Albany, New York. Adam christened 21 May 1751 Reformed Dutch Church of Stone Arabia, Palatine, Montgomery, New York. Their parents were Johannes Erhardt and Christina Weiss. Johannes's father was Johannes Simeon Erhardt. Any information you have on Simon would be helpful. I believe Simon is the brother of Wihelm and Adam.

We have much of the tree done back to Victoria Benoit & Joseph William Folse who was Mary Folse's mother & father. It appears that my grandfather had 3 brothers and a sister. John 1895,Frederick M 1896, Emanuel 1900, and Viola Adele 1894. Once Frederick died Mary Olivia married Claude Bowers and they had 4 sons. Earl 1908, Claude 1911, Clarence 1910, & Vernon 1913.

I was trying to figure out the first name of the Earhart that married Nancy Violet McAdoo who is my Great Great Grandmother and came accross your post. I would have asked my mother, but she is out of town. So I started researching and found your post. Nancy Violet Earhart was the mother of my Great Grandmother Marjorie "Madge" Earhart-Pepple. My Great Uncle Wm. Bill Pepple of Sullivan Indiana, who is my Grandmother's youngest brother may have some information. The other option for information would be my Great Aunt Kay, from Casper Wy; however, I wont' have an email address until my mother returns. Unfortunately my Grandmother Beatrice Pepple Thompson passed away last summer at the age of 90. I know we do have a picture of Nancy McAdoo as a toddler. I hope this is the McAdoo you are looking for. Sheri

Janice,
I am a descendant of Johann Michael Ehrhardt (born circa 1720) and Catherina Elizabeth Loesch of Culpepper-Augusta-Orange County VA. They moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia and his name is spelled as Michael Ahart in Virginia. I am descended from their son Abraham married to Elizabeth of Orange County VA. Adam Michael Ahart married to Lucas was the father of Sarah 30 Jan 1792. Abraham was Adam Michael Ahart's brother. We are working on a DNA study of DNA provided by a descendant of Johann Michael Ehrhardt. Please email me so I can fill you in on the study.
Marla Eaheart Millsap dh55245@cox.net

Could Alexander possibly be the father of Lucinda O. EARHART GODDARD/GODARD? Lucinda and her husband, George Columbus GODDARD, were enumerated (as GODARD) in Deer Creek Township, Bates Co., Missouri on the 1880 census and had a son named James Alexander GODDARD.

Lucinda's obituary from 1918 mentioned she was survived by two brothers but does not name them.

Any help in locating Lucinda's parents and siblings will be greatly appreciated.
