"Alan, dapifer" is
found as a witness in 1086 to a charter relating to Mezuoit, a cell of
St. Florent, near Dol.[8]
[edit] England

Flaad and his son Alan had come to the favourable notice of King
Henry I of England who, soon after his accession, invited Alan to
England with other Breton friends, and gave him forfeited lands in
Norfolk and Shropshire, including some which had previously
belonged to Ernulf de Hesdin and Robert de Belleme.[9]
[edit] Religious foundations

"Flaad filius Alani dapiferi" was present at the dedication of
Monmouth Priory in 1101/2, and his son Alan was a witness to
two charters of Henry I confirming the foundation of Holy
Trinity Priory, York, as a cell of Marmoutier. Alan also founded
Sporle Priory on land he held in Norfolk (probably at Sharrington),
as another cell of St. Florent.[9][10]
[edit] Marriage

Alan fitz Flaad married Ada (or Avelina), daughter of Ernoulf de
Hesdin (killed on crusade at Antioch).[11][12] Their issue was:

William fitz Alan, eldest son (d. 1160), made High Sheriff of
Shropshire by King Stephen of England in 1137. He married a
niece of Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester.[13] His son William (d. c1210)
acquired by marriage the Lordship of Clun and he became designated
"Lord of Clun and Oswestry".[14] William is ancestor of the FitzAlan
Earls of Arundel.[15]

FITZALAN FAMILY
Alan (Seneschal & Dapifer of Dol)
Born: 1020, Dol-et-Bretagne, Isle De Vilaine, France

Married: ¿?

Children:

1. He received the shreivalty
of Shropshire from King Henry I. While his parentage is more or less
obscure, there is evidence to show that Flaald, his father, lived in
Brittany and was a brother of Alain, seneschal of Dol, descended from
the old Armonican counts of Dol and Dinan. Alain Fitz Flaald was also
the father or grandfather of William Fitzalan, steward to David I, King
of Scotland, ancestor of the Stuarts, kings of that country. Alain Fitz
Flaald was also the father of William Fitzalan, to whom Henry II gave
in second marriage Isabel De Say, baroness of Clun, the greatest
heiress of Shropshire. He was ancestor of John Fitzalan, who married
Isabel, sister and co-heiress of Hugh d'Albigny. Upon a division of
Hugh's property at his death in 1243, the castle of Arundel was
assigned to John, son of the aforementioned John and Isabel,
who thus became the first Earl of eventually passed to Mary,
daughter and heiress of Henry Fitzalan, who carried it, together
Arundel of the Fitzalan line. This property with the earldom and
the barony of Maltravers, to her husband Thomas Howard, Duke of
Norfolk, in which family it still remains. Alain Fitz Flaald and his
wife Adeline were benefactors to priory of Castle Acre, early in the
reign of Henry I. In the baronial war, he appears first to have sided with
the barons, and afterwards with the King. He held five knight's fees
in Sussex, and lands as Oswestry, Salop, etc. His wife held in dower
part of Arundel Forest, 5 Jul 1281.

Father: John FITZALAN (B. Earl of Surrey; Admiral of the East and
South. In the 1st year of Richard II, he being constituted admiral of
the king's fleet in the westwards, and soon after that to the southwards,
was retained by indenture to serve the King at sea for one quarter of a
year, in the company of John, Duke of Lancaster. He was afterwards
engaged for some years in Scotland; and was in the commission (9th
year of Edward II), for the trial of Michael De la Pole, and some others
of the king's favorites, whom the Commons had then impeached.
He was appointed the next year admiral of the whole fleet, and putting
to sea encountered and vanquished the united fleets of France and
Spain, taking no less than 100 ships, great and small, all laden with
wines, comprising 19,000 tons. This gallant exploit he followed up by
entering the port of Brest, and reducing one of the castles and burning
the other. He now returned to England in great triumph, but had the
encounter the jealousy and hatred of the king's favorites, particularly
the Duke of Ireland, whose influence over the King he strenuously
resisted. His lordship afterwards entered into the confederation of
the Earls of Warwick and Derby, which assembled in arms at
Haringhay Park (now Hornsey), in Middlesex, and compelled
the King to acquiesce in their views. He was then, by the general
consent of the parliament (11th year of Richard II), made Governor
of the castle and town of Brest, and shortly after captain-general of
the king's fleet at sea, with commission to treat of peace with John
De Montfort, Duke of Brittany; whereupon hoisting his flag, soon
after met with the enemy, of whose ships he sunk and took fourscore;
entered the Isle of Rhe, which he burnt and spoiled, and several other
ports which he likewise plundered, putting to flight all the French
and Britons that made any resistance. From this memorable period
in the life of Lord Arundel, little is known of him, until the 15th year
of Richard, when the King regaining his power, summoned a
parliament at Westminster, and dismissed several of the great officers
of state, amongst whom his lordship was removed from his command
as admiral; and in two years afterwards, the parliament then sitting,
he was accused of treason by the Duke of Lancaster, but escaped for
the moment, and sought to retire from public life. The King entertaining,
however, the strongest feeling of personal enmity to all those who
had previously opposed his minions, contrived to get the E. Arundel
into his hands by stratagem, and having sent him prisoner to the Isle
of Wight, brought him to immediate trial, when he was condemned
to be hanged, drawn, and quartered as a traitor. The sentence was
however somewhat mitigated, and the gallant nobleman was simply
beheaded at Cheapside, in the city of London, in the 21st year of King
Richard II., the King himself being a spectator, and Thomas De Mowbray,
Earl Marshal (who had married his daughter), the executioner, who,
bound up his eyes, and according to some, the person who actually
struck off his head. It is stated that when the Earl saw his son-in-law,
Mowbray, and the E. Kent, his nephew, guarding him to the place of
execution, he told them, it had been much more fit that they should
have absented themselves; "For the time will come" he said, "when as
many shall wonder at your misfortune as they now do at mine".

Father: Richard "Copped Hat" FITZALAN (5° E. Arundel)

Mother: Eleanor PLANTAGENET (C. Arundel)

Married: Elizabeth De BOHUN (C. Arundel) 28 Sep 1359, Derbyshire, England

Children:

1. Joan FITZALAN (B. Avergavenny)

2. Elizabeth FITZALAN (B. Mowbray)

3. Richard FITZALAN (b. 1368 - d. 1399)

4. William FITZALAN (b. 1370 - d. 14 Oct 1415)

5. Alice FITZALAN

6. Thomas FITZALAN (7º E. Arundel)

7. Margaret FITZALAN

Married 2: Phillipa MORTIMER (C. Pembroke / C. Arundel)
(d. 24 Sep 1401) (dau. of Edmund Mortimer, 3º E. March, and
Phillippa Plantagenet) (w.1 of John Hastings, 3° E. Pembroke -
m.3 Thomas De Poynings, 1º B. St. John of Basing) 15 Aug 1390

Children:

8. John FITZALAN (b. 1394)

9. Joan FITZALAN

Walter fitz Alan, second son, became 1st hereditary High Steward
of Scotland,[13] and ancestor of the Stewart Kings of Scotland.
Jordan fitz Alan, of Burton, who inherited lands in Brittany, and
restored to the Priory of St. Florent at Sele, West Sussex, the mill at
Burton given it by his father.[16]
Simon, brother of Walter, who also went to Scotland and witnessed
his brother's Foundation Charter of Paisley Abbey.[17] Round suggests
he may have been either a uterine or even a bastard brother.[18]

Family

Alan was the son of Flaad, who was in turn a son [7] of an Alain who had
been the crusader (in 1097[8]) who was dapifer to the Archbishop of Dol,
which is situated near Mont-Saint-Michel. "Alan, dapifer" is found as a
witness in 1086 to a charter relating to Mezuoit, a cell of St. Florent,
near Dol.[8] England

Flaad and his son Alan had come to the favourable notice of King Henry I
of England who, soon after his accession, invited Alan to England with
other Breton friends, and gave him forfeited lands in Norfolk and
Shropshire, including some which had previously belonged to Ernulf
de Hesdin and Robert de Belleme.[9]

"Flaad filius Alani dapiferi" was present at the dedication of Monmouth
Priory in 1101/2, and his son Alan was a witness to two charters of Henry
I confirming the foundation of Holy Trinity Priory, York, as a cell of
Marmoutier. Alan also founded Sporle Priory on land he held in
Norfolk (probably at Sharrington), as another cell of St. Florent.[9][10]
[edit] Marriage

Alan fitz Flaad married Ada (or Avelina), daughter of Ernoulf de Hesdin
(killed on crusade at Antioch).[11][12] Their issue was:

William fitz Alan, eldest son (d. 1160), made High Sheriff of Shropshire
by King Stephen of England in 1137. He married a niece of Robert, 1st Earl
of Gloucester.[13] His son William (d. c1210) acquired by marriage the
Lordship of Clun and he became designated "Lord of Clun and Oswestry"
.[14] William is ancestor of the FitzAlan Earls of Arundel.[15]
Walter fitz Alan, second son, became 1st hereditary High Steward of
Scotland,[13] and ancestor of the Stewart Kings of Scotland.

I have been trying to find information on the different coats of arms for the Eaton name. I have found about 3 or 4 different examples. Does anybody have resources on which coat of arms belongs to which branch of Eatons? I know that historically heraldry was given to the individual, not the family, so the examples found may all belong to relatives of the same line.

Thanks,

Caleb L.
I am sorry to inform you, but Berry Eaton did not marry Sarah Barnett. I have been working on this a long time, and dates and events do not add up. I am trying to prove to others that is cannot be. Berry Eaton was married to Matilda Miller, Martha Waters, and then a very short time to Mary C. Atwood. Berry lived in Edmonson Co. Ky, and Wilson Co. Kansas. He never lived in Missouri. If I can be of any help to you please let me know... sorry!

Yes we are related. Dorothy was My Great Grandmother Bertha's sister. I have not gone back into the line since I deleted the branch after Maynard and Alice. I know that this info is correct because my mother's cousin George and his wife Glory Peel paid for a geneaologist to trace back as far as they could. I also have an alternate name for Alice M Perkins. It is Nettie Marie. If you send me your email I will send you a copy of the Nentahafel report that Glory sent to me. my email is ktsummrsll@aol.com.
William Eaton b. 1845 IL

Can anyone help with William Eaton b. 1845 Jasper IL? He m. Elizabeth Brady on 18 Feb 1869 at Neosho KS.

The children born in Kansas were: Annie P. b. 1870, William J. b. 1872 and Rosetta b. 1876.

In the 1880 Census the family was living at Coryell, TX. William B. 1845 was a son of Absolum Eaton and Rachel (Miller) and a grandson of Richard Eaton, an early settler of Limestone County, TX. The family at one time had lived in Illinois.

The need to find more on the lives of these folks is a profound reason. William Sr. had a daughter with neighbor girl, 19 year old Nancy Huller in Neosho KS in 1867. This child was known as Mildred Huller Eaton. From what we have been told William wanted to raise the child but the Hullers refused to let her go. Unfortunately the Hullers died out within the next years and Mildred ended up with an elderly cousin, Elizabeth Miller in Jasper County IA. Sadly Elizabeth soon died too. Mildred was left quite alone in the world from age 10.

She wanted to find her father and half siblings but was unsuccessful. Today 2 granddaughters of hers still hope for news of what became of them. Have they left any descendants?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Julie Hendricks
Spokane, WA

jewelannah@juno.com

I too trced this line back to the 1500's then read a story about how my ancestor was often confused with that Eaton so I deleted the line till I can document everything. I used only censuses and am not comfortable with that so I deleted that branch. I am sorry if anyone connected to my line but do not know how to correct that. My ancestor is Leonard Eaton (1838-1890)born to Chase Eaton (b 1819) and Meriam ?
(1819). Leonard Eaton married Mercy Wells (1837-1870)IN 1863. They are the parents of Maynard my G G Grandfather. Any provable info would be appreciated.

I have rescued letters from this family that contain much family history. Most of the letters are from son Carl Eaton to mother Sadie (Mrs R F Eaton). The earliest is postmarked 1900 the latest is 1945. If anyone is interested I will copy. They contain a surprising amount of family history.

I am wondering now if we are working on the same line. It is a bit too similar not to be but this is what I have.
Thomas Jackson Eaton's father was William G. Eaton. He had a brother named William A. Eaton as well. (Other siblings were John J., Joseph, Martha, Amanda and Charles).

My Thomas (unless he was married prior), married Magdalena C. "Ellen" Rysdam in Walla Walla WA. She was the first wife of Virgil Earp. Prior to Thomas she was married to Virgil - briefly - then John Van Rossum, then Thomas. I have her whole family line (parents, siblings). I have her children and their families all from the Portland Oregon area. She is the one I am related to. Her and Thomas' son Garrett was my great grandfather.

Could you share what Thomas research you have please? If he was only married to a woman named Katherine then we have different Thomas Eaton's.

I do know that my Thomas Eaton was born in Memphis, Shelby, Tennessee in 1844.

So I am looking for info on lois marlene tait(1935-2002) (my grandma) her parents were louis squire(1904-1951) and maude "babe" A Eaton (1909-1992).

And all I could find out was that Maude Eatons parents were Robert Eaton(1880-?) and Maude Todd(1886-1972) after that I don't know anything. because they immigrated here from Canada.

Thank you for any help

If you go to googlebooks.com and look for a link to Eaton Genealogy there is a book that you can read online (ebook) about the entire history of the Eaton's and which ones came from where and where they immigrated to. I think when I was scanning it a few days ago - your ancestors name was in it. Happy reading! It is a horrendously long book. You may want to order a copy of it for yourself.
My connection is to a William G. Eaton, also born in Tennessee then on to Missouri and Oregon. His son Thomas J. Eaton was my great great grandfather.

Good luck,

Lou McLean

I have been able to find some info on John F.'s parents and siblings on ancestry.com. Much of the information on there could be false since I got it from the family trees. Other info I took from the US Census. That is more reliable. John F. Eatons father was William Parker Eaton (b. North Carolina 1795, d. Il Jan 1876.) In 1823 he married Nancy Johnson in Warren KY. From Nancy Johnson they had Berry Eaton (1824-1907). In Oct. 1828 Wm. Parker Eaton married Nancy Houchin in Warren, Edmonson co. KY. They had the following children(in the 1850 US Census, KY).John F. 19, William 18, Henry S. 14, James 13, Benjamin 11, Westley T. 9, Elizabeth T. 9,Drucilla 6. Hope this helps.
