HI helen,
I believe you to be Jeffs daughter. I am Cheryl Les's daughter and would be interested in what info you have. Grandad also had a sister Margaret who was not on your list. My daughter is interested in doing a family tree so thought I'd start her off
I'm trying to trace descendents of my father Arthur Robert Eddleston (1915-1966), known as Robert or Bob in Lancashire\Yorkshire. His parents were Ada Pickles & Arthur Eddleston. I lost track of him in 1954, and believe he may have lived in Tottington, Lancs. Any information graetfully received. Thanks!

Re: origins

Paul,
I've just stumbled across this post. I've been interested in our name for many years, and have only recently decided to pick up the pace in finding the earliest origins.
The reason your post caught my eye is because a friend of mine shares your name (No close relation!). I am now 39, and until ten years ago I had not met another Eddleston ever ! I was aware of a family of bakers in my same town, and of others in a nearby town. Then ten years ago my wifes best friend revealed here maiden name was Jane Eddleston, and we never knew this ! Then two years later my neigbour two doors down also reveals her maiden name is Jayne Eddleston !!! Three years ago I met a new worker at my employers as John Eddleston, and last year I met Paul Eddleston who is my age. All at once they appear. Imagine my surprise when John shows me a family tree his grandfather traced which shows the earliest entry in the 1600's as Nicholas Eddleston to his wife Isabella (Who just happens to be the name of Johns daughter!) To cut a very long story short, John is from a farming family from Blackburn, a very large town in North East Lancashire, and Paul is not related to John, but is also from farming stock in Blackburn. Johns family tree clearly shows ALL the Eddlestons as land owners in this area, and as they married over time, they spread as farmers and landowners all around Lancashire to its very borders and no further. More interesting still is the town in which I live and have done so for more than 30 years. This town is called Great Harwood, and is in the district of Blackburn,Lancashire. Its earlist entrys are visable around the Medievel times, especially in the area of Martholme, just a half mile from my home. The earliest Eddleston is from this very area & period,at a time when the Normans held ther titles as landowners etc. The name I find is Nicholas Eddleston, but I recal from memory at the time of writing this, and need to re-confirm the date at my local library in Gt.Harwood but I think it around 1300's. I also have a very good theory of the origins of our name, but it would take quite a few lines to type.

Nick Eddleston.

Just a bit more,
Most Eddlestons I find either worked in the cotton mills or down the mines (My Grandfather lined the brick shafts)

He came to Sheffield between 1961 and 1871, where he appears as a lodger in Sheffield. He married Emma Griffiths in sheffield and died there.
His father Andrew was a lace maker in Calais according to George's marriage certificate.
Andrew was probably born about 1815-20.
Thats all i know

HI Rachael, I suspect you have no replies as you have not provided enough information. I suggest you add what you already know about, starting with yourself, parents and working back as far as you can.
I have a database of names and families with close on 3000 entries, but all the data ends at late 1800's and goes back to 1600. This has been collected from many sources, census, IGI etc. and is pricipally from Lancashire.
Good luck on your search.

Rick
Re this thread.
I have been recently researching the Eddleston and this has taken me to Wigan and one of the few Eddleston families there. Naturally I cant go past 1901 without spending a lot of money buying certificates. Sadly I am not a millionaire otherwise it would not be a problem, LOL.
Anyway I have a fairly extensive amount of information gathered already for m the period 1800ish to 1900 for descendants of a family who lived at Roby Mill and later moved to Wigan. These could be the ancestors of the Thomas you have mentioned.
Please contact me at rklose@bigpond.net.au if you would like to correspond re this group.

Cheers

Rick

Hello my great Grandfather John Fisher was born in Eddleston in 1851 he had on his army papers that he was a coach builder & blacksmith. My great aunt Lizzie Fisher used to point out the now Horshoe Inn which I think was a tea room when we were kids telling us that he worked there as a blacksmith can this be verified. I am now in Australia and would welcome any information re the Eddleston Fishers. Rab

It is good to post on this thread every couple of years, or so...
I have noted that some of my ancestors appear, by accident or design, as Eccleston on one census, and Eddleston the next. The town of Eddleston is supposedly derived from the name Athelstane (it is all on the web somewhere) so there may be no connection. On the other hand, who really knows?
I wonder what the small town in Lancashire with a name possibly beginning "B" was? My own lot seemed to congregate in St Helens for most of the 19th century but I suspect they came there at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution from place or places unknown. St Helens itself only really exists from that time. One day I hope to find the answer, and I have made a lot of progress since some of my early posts here, but it certainly gets more difficult before 1800.
Regards
Norman

Hi Joan

Robert Catlow is my G G Grandfather. Don't know if it will work - but I have attached an image of his marriage certificate to Mary Ann Eddleston (Father's name on the certificate is Thomas Eddleston).

Which census records do you have Mary - married to Robert - born in Ramsgreave? I have just looked through the census for 1881(they were married in 1879) , 1891 & 1901 and on each census she is shown as "Mary Ann" and is shown as born in Mellor.

Let me know if you need anymore details - I will happily share what I have. I also have census details from when Mary Ann lived at home with her parents

Hi Lawson, what makes you think she married Robert Catlow? I have her as married to John Harrison, son of William and Ann, and with the following children: William, b Oct 1880, John 1881, Alfred 1883, Thurston 1884, Walter 1888, Edith 1891, Margaret 1891, James 1896, Mary 1899. The children come from various censes, but her spouse comes from a family tree I was given. I don't know how accurate it is so am curious about your source.

Not sure if you are going to get this, as this thread seems quite old....

Quite interested reading your posts about Eddlestons in Blackburn who were farmers - as my Eddleston ancestors were also farmers in the Blackburn area.

My GG Grandmother was Mary Ann Eddleston (born 1860 in Mellor). Her siblings were:

Ellen - born abt 1868 in Pleasington
Alice - born abt 1866 in Pleasington
Thomas - born abt 1858 in Mellor
Catherine - born abt 1851 in Samlesbury
James - born abt 1848 in Samlesbury
John - born abt 1847 in Pleasington

Their parents were Thomas and Ellen Eddleston (not sure what Ellen's maiden name was).

Thomas was born abt 1823 in Blackburn
Ellen was born abt 1825 in Pleasington, Blackburn

From the 1851 and 1861 census records I know that Thomas was a Toll collector at the Shackerly Toll Bar on the road in to Blackburn (I have attached a picture of the toll bar from later on in 1890 - they weren't there at this point in time). By 1871 he was a farmer and their farm was Shorrock Hey Farm in Blackburn (within Woodfold).

Don't know if any of the names or places match any of your own findings??

Would love to hear from you

Regards

Lawson
I have traced the Eddleston side of my family back to my g-grandparents:
James Eddleston, b.1851
married
Mary Jacques, b.1851 - died 1887

They had a son Adam (my grandfather), b.1879 and a daughter Ann Jane, b.1877. There was also a son, James, registered in 1888 (!?)
After Mary died, James married Margaret Johnson, in 1889. That marriage resulted in Harriet and Wilfred.

I am particularly interested in tracing the Jacques line. The spelling changes from Jacques to Jaques to Jaquen in the records I have seen for Mary. There are other possible variations.

If any of the above triggers recognition, I would be happy to correspond.

Norman

Hi there,
thanks for the message... there may be a connection, i will dig out some more info from my trip to wigan a few years ago with my parents - i do remember though that in the family history centre we found links to Ashton/makerfield (birth or baptism certificates if i remember rightly).
to fill you in on my grandmothers side:

She was Edith Leyland Eddleston, born in wigan on sept 11th 1915, she had a brother Leslie (Les).
Her father was Thomas Eddleston, and her mother Florence Lowe. They came out to new zealand in 1924, for a better life, Thomas had been working in the mines but then became asthmatic, and after that worked as the sexton in the anglican church in wigan.

Thomas' father was Peter Eddleston, who married Jane Baxter in 1889. they had eight children including thomas...
i don't know his birthdate but i will find out ... i know he died in 1967 in NZ, at a guess he would have been born in the late 1880's or early 1890's.

let me know if this rings any bells! will get more info from my father and let you know.

regards,
Helen
