I, too, have been looking for George for almost 20 years. All the family lore goes back to one account, but I have never been able to verify that account.

The story goes that he came from London when he was teenager, but doesn't say London, England, just London and it was after his father gave him a beating.

Also, the marriage certificate between George and Margaret, reads George Edgerton.

So, any information would be helpful to solve this mystery.

I am looking for any information that links George Edgington (b 1707, m Margaret Broome)to Wales or England. At one time family lore said that he was an indentured servant to pay for his stow-away passage from Wales. Would there be records for that? Have any English Edgingtons come forward looking for a lost George Edgington in their family tree? I've been working on and off for over 20 years on this tree and it always dead ends with George the Immigrant.

Descedant of George Edgington Sr and Margaret Broome.

The more I research the more variations of the spelling I find. I have lineage from George Edgington Sr and Margaret Broome, than George Edgington Jr and Mary Naylor, Abel Edgington and Hannah Woods, Peter Edgington Sr and Lydia Conway and then it stops at Ralph T. Edgington.

My post of this lineage is on http://www.jeffcochapter.com/Edgington-Robinette.html and I am looking for much of the same information on George before he came to the US. However I would love more information on Ralph T Edgington who had several children, one being Joseph Cyrus Edgington Sr and married Betty Mae Robinette they named their son Joseph Cyrus Edgington Jr and I am his daughter. I would love any photos or information which could possibly help link in the missing parts. I have many old photos of relatives I do not know. I am working to compile what I have for anyone who is interested.

Email: summeredgington@hotmail.com

Edgington/Edginton Ancestors from Warwickshire, England

I seem to see all kinds of Edgingtons from the line of George Edgington and Margaret Broome from Sussex. Is there anyone out there that is from the line of John Edginton/Edgington and Hannah Hortin from Warwickshire, Eng. Some of my Edginton family spelled it with 2 g's and some only 1. My mother was an Edginton. I am from Walter or William Edgington/Edginton that came from Warwickshire. He married a girl named Ruth Emma Clift here in the US. There families were in Ohio, Utah, Idaho and California. If anyone knows of this family please contact me. We all must be connected somehow. My email address is wdottiew@aol.com

Elizabeth (ROUSH) EDGINGTON, 1843-1922

Elizabeth (ROUSH) EDGINGTON has an Illinois state death certificate. The following website has a transcription of the certificate.

Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths, 1916-1947 ( http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/ ).

She died 12 Apr 1922, Downs Twp., McLean Co., Illinois. Her birth is listed as 7 Mar 1843, Adams Co., OH. The burial place is listed as Trenity, Ky., which probably is a misspelling of Trinity, KY., which is in Lewis Co., KY, across the river from Adams Co., OH.

The "History of The ROUSH Family In America" -- Rev. Lester LeRoy ROUSH (1928) has her birth date as 7 Mar 1843, death date as 1920 [sic], and that she married Aaron EDGINGTON in 1858. Researchers in the EDGINGTON family have different dates. Their information apparently came from Elizabeth's obit in the People's Defender. JoLynn Miller has a transcription of this obit in her database at WorldConnect (RootsWeb). The following is what she has. (Le Roy, Illinois is adjacent to Downs Twp.)

People's Defender, 17 Apr 1922 - "Mrs. Elizabeth Edgington, former Adams county resident, died at her home in Leroy, Ill., April 5 [sic], 1922. She was past 80 [sic] years of age. She was married to Aaron Edgington on April 15, 1858, and to this union were born 10 children, 5 preceded her in death while young in life. Five boys still survive, namely: Reason Edgington, Manchester, Ohio; Henry A. Edgington, Manchester, R. D. 3; Samuel R. Edgington, Portsmouth, Ohio; Fernando Edgington, Bloomington, Ill.,; George L. Edgington, Leroy, Ill."

George William EDGINTON born 1794

George William EDGINTON (sometimes described as William George EDGINTON) was born in 1794. Please note the spelling EDGINTON not EDGINGTON. George married Matilda PRICE at St Marylebone, Westminster in 1826.

The 1851/61/71 census show George and Matilda living at Reading with George described variously as a Chemist/Apothocary/practitioner of medicine/general practitioner. In 1869 George's translation of Homer's 'Odyssey' was published. George died in 1878.

Can anyone tell me anything more about him and if he had any children?

Thank you.
Where is George Edgington, Sr from??
On this website, there is an article about where George Edgington, Sr, based on the research from Elma Louise Thursby (Maltsberger)'s records. The article says George was born in Wales or England. He is a quote from the article.

"When George was attending school in London at about the age of 14, he was severely punished for some breach of discipline, and he greatly feared taht when he went home he would receive another stiff punishment. He thereupon went to the docks and secreted himself on a ship bound for America. His presence was not discovered until the ship was well out to sea, so he was taken to Philadelphia. "

To the best of my knowledge, no documentation has surfaced before the time of George and Margaret's Marriage in Philadelphia on July 30, 1743.

So, what if?? What if, this information has been misinterpreted? What if "London", was not London, England, but Norwick, New London, Connecticut and he last name on the marriage certificate is accurate, as Edgerton. There were Edgerton's in New London, Connecticut around the 1700's and before.

Hi Ken,
I hope you can help me. My maternal grandmother was named Florence Edgington Baher (b.1897) and married a Hotchkiss. Her mother was Mamie Lillian Demarris (b. 1874) and her grandmother was rumored to have been named Mary Ann Edgington (b. about 1852) the first wife of Albert Alonzo Demarris. Albert Demarris remarried, to Julia Ann Moyer in 1877. Would you have any info on any of these people. I can't find anything on Mary and little to nothing on Mamie, although I do have a copy of my grandmother's birth certificate that states who her parents were and where they were born.
Edginton/ Edgington's of England

I am researching my Fathers ancestors mostly born in Gloucestershire England, Although the Oxfordshire and Wiltshire borders are only about 7 miles in each direction.
I am trying to make a connection with Charles Edginton born Strenten or it could be Shurdington Glos. I know his father is called Joseph and I think his Mother may be Elizabeth Hale although I cant make a definate connection. In 1841 they lived in Quennington Glos. Does anyone have info that may help please? Also the surname appears to have 2 G's prior to 1871 and then the second G was lost!

Hello there,
I can't seem to find any connection with my Edginton/ Edgington family and the group on the Eastern seaboard. However, I feel that at one point in time we were all of one...Edginton/Edginton family, however you want to spell it.
I haven't been able to trace my family back very far. My mothers father was the Edginton. His name was Alfred Frederick Edginton and he was born in California in 1863. He was the 4th child of 11. His parents were William Walter Edgington and Ruth Emma Clift. They were both born in England. They met in Salt Lake City, UT and married in 1856. My youngest Uncle recalls his grandfather, Wm. Walter, talking of living in Ohio at some point in his life. I have not found any trace of that. My 2nd great grandfather was named John Edgington married to Hannah Horton in England. I have no clue as to when this branch of the tree came to the US. I live in Idaho and most of my relatives live either in Utah or California. I have found some distant cousins living in Idaho but they know no more than I about the family. Dottie

Some notes I have on Eli:
1840 Muscatine County census record for Joseph E. Edgington lists one child between 5-10 years. 1846 Probate record for Joseph Edgington states Eli under 14 years. 1860 Muscatine census for Stephen A. Edgington lists Eli age 27 born in Michigan. 1880 Osceola County census has Eli age 46 born in Michigan and includes son Chester D. age 5. Louisa County WPA records lists Eli, born 1832, and Chester born 1874. 1880 census lists wife as Eliza J.

From The Republican, Wapello, Iowa, April 13, 1916: Eli Edgington. Tuesday morning at the county farm, Eli Edgington, one of the oldest inmates, passed away at the age of eighty-three years. He had been at the county farm for the past two years. He is survived by two sons, Chester, of near Cairo, Iowa, John, of Concord township, this county, and one daughter, Mrs. Geo. Brenneman, of Columbus Junction His wife preceded him in death a good many years ago. Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Bethel church. Internment at Indian Creek cemetery.

Eli is on the 1885 Cedar Township census with the family of Michael and Amanda Wagner. With him is son, Chester and daughter, Lulu.

Notes I have about Joseph E. Edgington:
Children of Joseph E. Edgington are as listed by his son Eli in a 1911 Louisa County affidavit concerning a property dispute. The property had been purchased by Joseph E. in the 1840's. After his death the property was sold by his heirs. I am confident there were other children and that Eli was only listing the ones alive at the time of the property sale. Other researchers include sons George, born ca. 1809, John, born 1816, and daughters Eliza, born 1821, and Marsha, born 1823.

Thanks Ken. I don't have Joseph and Eunice as Eli's parents so I guess I need to do a little more searching. I have Jesse Edgington as his father. I looked at Joseph but it seemed he was too old to be Eli's father. Can you tell me a little more about this 1911 affidavit?

Barb
