Hello there!
My maiden name is 'Ediss'.
My family says that the additional 's' was added for pronunciation reasons when they were living in France in the 1700's.

Living here in the US I know how unique the surname is and tend to find that all records I come across are 'Ediss' I already know in my family! I'd appreciate any info!
Thanks, Leslie - parkertales@yahoo.com

Hi Kenneth

The only informaiton I have for Matthew Edis is the following.

In the 1841 Census he lived bath court, Finsbury, St Mary Islington East, working as a Carpenter and it say's he was aged 20 born in Islington, Middlesex.

Then he married Mary Ann/Am/Amy Capling at St Luke parish church, Islington, Middlesex. Vol 2 Pg 266, noted as over full age so over 21 years old on the 15th april 1844. So he was born before 1823. His father is Joseph as per the marriage certificate. They lived Helmet Row, Islington, St Lukes, EC1V. It also say's he works as a Currier which is the same as his father.

They lived 6 Norfolk Terrace, Islington London, on one of the son's birth certificate.

On son George's Wedding certificate in 1872 it stats that his a Joiner. (notably it doesn't say deceased).

Regards
Jenine

Matthew Edis

Can anyone help?

I am stuck in my search for Matthew Edis in my tree. He was born around 1820's Middlesex, England but I cant find a birth, he died after 1872 but cant find his death, I found his marriage in 1844 at parish church, St Lukes, Islington, Middlesex, this shows his father as Joseph Edis, and I found him in 1841 census, but no other census' which is strange, as he does not appear in the census' with his wife and children. He had 3 children (James Henry, William & George Matthew) with his wife Mary Ann/Am Capling, but I can only find the children in census' 1851, and I can not find them in 1861 or 1871. When the children marry they show up in census' 1881 onwards. All very anoying, not sure what I can do, can anyone advise, help ?

Many thanks in advance,
Jenine
