I just stumbled on your query and will answer as best I can. Corrections are always welcome. My information states that William and Sarah, along with William's brother, James, died in the sinking of one of William's ships in June or September 1702 (depending on which date one uses.) It could have been "The Dove of Maryland" as that ship was delivered to William in 1700. This "Dove" is not to be confused with the earlier "Dove" that brought settlers to St. Mary's. William and Sarah Sharpe Edmondson are said to be buried in a single grave near Island Creek "on Wiliam Sharp's plantation in the grove." William Edmondson was a ship builder and trader. Tragically, their youngest child, Peter, was only a few months old at the time of their deaths. This information comes from "Edmondsons in Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania" compiled and posted by S.W. Edmondson on 16 Aug 2009 at genealogy.com. According to Third Haven Meeting records, William and Sarah had married on Christmas Day 1692.

Thanks for the suggestions. It's no easy task.

Yes, John Thomas Edmondson married Amy Joiner. They had a son, Ralph Lionel Edmondson, my father.

They then divorced. Amy remarried and had three more children. I never knew my grandfather. He's a bit a mystery.

John Thomas Edmondson was a soldier at Bovington Camp (tanks) when he got married in 1921.

His father is named as John Thomas Holgate Edmondson (deceased before 1921), described as a Cotton Waste Dealer.

Searches for Edmondson seem to turn up people from Lancashire, which of course had a cotton industry, so I suspect he might be from there.

No living relative knows anything about my grandfather. There are no documents.

Presumably, there will be a birth certificate for John Thomas Edmondson somewhere? His recorded age was 24 on the marriage certificate dated 19th March 1921, which places his date of birth in 1896/7.

Is your John Thomas EDMONDSON the one appearing in Dorset marriage records as having married Amy JOINER in Parkstone? Most unusual, since both fathers mentioned have four names.

Was John Thomas' mother named Hannah?

"You can tell I'm an absolute beginner."

As once were we all! You'll soon get the hang of it. If you haven't already, I suggest you subscribe to the mailing lists for both the surnames you're researching and the locations in which they lived.

MJOlson has pretty much taken the words out of my mouth. ;-) Never assume when it comes to names or titles and never take for gospel what your relatives tell you.

Why don't you post a bit more information about your family, especially the dates and locations, and perhaps someone can shed some light on this.

Don't assume anything about names. Don't assume anything about Jr. or Sr. or I or II or III as suffixes, either (but that was not your question).

Holgate is a surname. Yes. But it often happens that a child is given the surname of a mother or grandparent as a given name or a middle name. Having 2 middle names would be slightly unusual. I think that Edmondson is the surname you are looking for, but you might want to look for a Holgate, too. You might also look for other spellings which sound like Edmondson (Edmonson, Edmundson, Edmisen etc).

I'd certainly look for an ancestor with the surname of Holgate if I were you, though it could be that Holgate was the name of the doctor who delivered him (has happened in my family) or a godparent or some other person special to the family.

Good luck finding this person.

So isn't Holgate Edmondson a double surname?

All I know about him is that he was a Cotton Waste Dealer and he died before 1921.

Not much to go on.

I am trying to find out more about my Grandfather Fredrick Hird Edmondson. My father was Richard Edmondson and I was born in Harrogate, Yorkshire. My grandfather lived at The Lindens, Utley. My father was living at Greystones, Menston when he married my mother and my half-brother is Rodney Hird Edmondson. My Grandfather died when I was only a few weeks old (1953) and my paternal grandmother died before I was born. Our family was connected with Timothy Hird and Sons in Keighley - although our association had long since ceased by the time I was about 8 and my father died when I was about 13. My maternal grandparents were Jack and Helene Clapham who lived in Harrogate and I know precious little about them as well. Can anyone help?

Looking for John Edmondson

I am looking for John Edmondson son of William Edmondson and Martha (Thomas) Edmondson. John was born about 1874 in Missouri, probably Campbell. Greene, MO. He is listed in the 1880 Campbell Greene MO census record being 6 years old. I haven't been able to locate him in any other census records, but his sister Cora's obituary dated 1929 stated that he was living in California. He died before 1950 because he isn't mentioned in another sister's 1950 obit. Family stories say that he was a Dr. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I am hoping to connect with Edmondson relatives who are associated with Richard Emil Edmondson,1893-1973. I am working on a Dillon family who married back in 1955.

I am trying to find my Dillon ancestor who I believe is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Queens,NY., so picking at straws in hope someone can help me.. The Dillon plot (2 of them side by side) has a total of 15 person in each.. there fore a list of like 30 person is what is available.. it would cost me over $300.00 to get interment list from Calvary Cemetery. I don't have a death date on my Dillon so assuming she is there..

In 1955 Mary Coleman Dillon, dau of Frank and Joan Dillon married Robert Edmondson, son of Mrs. and Mrs. Richard E. Edmondson of 130 East End Ave. Frank Dillon 1915-1994 was the son of Francis & Ruth Schultz Dillon, who was the son of Thomas Dillon 1840-1910, who was a decorator in NYC.

I suspect Richard E. Edmondson's wife was Josephine and also suspect he had a brother, Ralph Edmondson, who's son was J. Richard Edmondson 1927-2009 CT.

Any info on the Dillon side greatly appreciated..

Sheilah

I am a descendant of the Bassett you are inquiring about. His name was William Henry Bassett, my 3rd great grandfather. Benjamin V was married to Elizabeth Bassett. According to info on Bassett Branches, his line has a 63/67 match to the Benjamin Harrison James River line, i.e. the line of Benjamin Harrison the signor of the Declaration of Independence and President William Henry Harrison. This would indicate that aside from being raised by the Harrison family he was likely a son of one of the Harrisons. His DNA does not match any of the known Bassett lines. My grandmother tried to discover the true story, but was unable to determine his heritage. The story goes his parents died when he was young. Early in his teens we went to sea and returned in his early 20's. He married and moved to southern Louisiana with his family that eventually numbered 8 from 2 marriages. He was a farmer and at one point was US Marshal for a period of time.

Hope this gives you some info, would love to hear if you discover anything else.

Sources Bassett Branches web site newsletter from Feb 2009
Harrison DNA Project: Patriarchs page on worldfamilies.net.
John Coleman and Robert Spilsby Edmondson

I have a NSSAR application pending for proof John Coleman Edmondson is in fact a son of Robert Spilsby Edmondson.

John Coleman Edmondson was born 26 Dec 1806 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, died 16 October 1855 in Tishomingo, Tishomingo County, Mississippi. First know residence in Tishomingo is 1845, but could have been a few years sooner. On 3 March 1835, he married Mary "Polly' Smith Coleman in Williamson, Tennessee. I have an 1850 census of John and his family.

Robert Spilsby Edmondson was born 1 May 1780 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, died 2 Jun 1864 in Iuka, Tishomingo County, Mississippi. First known residence in Tishomingo County was after 1845. On 29 January 1803 he married Nancy Singleton in Mecklenburg, Virginia. He also served in the War of 1812 as a Captain. He is buried in the Rutledge Salem Cemetery. I can't find Robert in 1850 or 1860 census anywhere. Probably no will with John's name since John died in 1855 and Robert in 1864.

Searching for a "document" to prove John Coleman Edmondson is indeed a son of Robert Spilsby Edmondson. I have the National Society United States Daughters of 1812, Ancestor Index, Page 165 that states this is a fact. Dr Stephen W. Edmondson has a ton of proof in Edmondson's in MS and VA, unfortunately NSSAR does not accept the 1812 organization or Dr Edmondson's notes as proof of the Son to Father relationship.
Regards,
Ken Edmondson

Maxine,
Is Richard your husband? If so, his dad and my dad Ernie were brothers. His mother Vergie was a beautiful woman. Would love to establish some communication.

Barbara Jo Edmondson Kerr
