My line is also Asa Edney....daughter Matilda married a Taylor, their son Adolphus, died in the CW, his daughter, Mary Jane married Marion Augustus Wilson. I haven't checked out Lucinda, but probably related to Augustus' line line back there somewhere. This line moved to Gordon County Georgia and "Gus" moved on to Arkansas ca. 1890.

Your finding pretty much agrees with an observation I've made many times. Many or most of our ancestors didn't speak like TV newscasters. Nicknames and 'country speech' caused lots of misunderstanding when written down by someone not in the know. I had the opportunity to grow up in the country at the edge of the mountains and heard lots of names, often those ending in 'a', spoken as if they were 'ie' endings: Ednie for Edna, Lydie for both the given name Lydia and a family name Lyda. Just another example of keeping our ears as well as our eyes open when looking into our family history.

Jeannie,

I'm hoping that you get a notification of this response. Others may consider it in any case.
EDNEY as a first name could be a clue that a person descends from that family or the person's family may have had a close connection to an EDNEY family. One family member whose middle name was Edney did not know that it came from his own grandmother! Perhaps you could post again with later information than you had for your 2002 post. Please change the subject line to make it draw our attention to a more specific person, time period, and geographical area.
I have numerous SC family names and none that I know about have EDNEYs in their lines in the late 1770's and mid 1800's. My Lucinda EDNEY married Elisha JAMES and moved to Tennessee. My Lucinda seems to have died in TN about 1840. I have researched the EDNEY family in some self-published materials. My EDNEYs started in eastern NC in Pasquotank County and migrated to Henderson County in western NC.
Hoping that this helps someone,
MomSmith4
EDNEY Board Admin

Samuel Rufus' stone says "Rufus Edney." He is buried between his two wives.

I agree with the previous response. L. Fortner and Lionel Edney generated a pretty good case for Samuel's son being the Tennesssee Newton. Levin Edney (the preacher) is identified as Newton's brother (Newton's will) but Alson died first and is not mentioned. I believe the three men are described as brothers in old histories of Nashville but no source is given.

In going over several notebooks of Edney information, I find that some people think Alson was the son of Samuel and some think he was the son of Newton. I have never found anything on Alson prior to 1791 when he married Polly Dunham. In 1966 Major Limon E. Fortner, Jr. concluded, based on several deeds, that Nuton Rencher Edney's son Newton stayed in N.C. and Samuel's went to Tenn. Court house records in both N.C. and Tenn. have burned for the time period we need further records. We may never find anything else. Sorry I cannot give you better information.

Dorothy

Samuel Oscar was a son of Samuel Rufus Edney and Amanda Delola Edney (distant cousins who married), thus making you kin to both the original Edney families in Henderson Co.
More information available if you still need it.

Alson (Allison) Edney was the son of Samuel Edney born abt. 1725 probably in Pasquotank, N.C. and died abt. 1774 same area....married to Mary Kelley. Samuel was the son of Robert Edney who died in 1757 in Pasquotank and Ann Rensher.
Many people show her name as Anne A. Rensher, but in looking at the document she signed, she wrote an "A" as her mark and someone else wrote Ann and Rensher.
How do you descend from John Dunham Edney?

Hope this helps.

Christina:
According to what I have found, you have traced your family back appropriately. The current standard Edney book is Marshall Styles' My North Carolina Heritage Descendants of Robert Edney and Anna A. Wrensher. He is actually responsible for finding several important documntary items on the family.
According to his book:
If your Will Edney is William Calvin Edney, then you definitely have the right family. In fact, Wilson Edney (whose full name is actually much longer) is the son, not grandson, of Cavin Jones Edney. Calvin was born in Henderson Co., NC, and moved to Yancey County, the home of his wife, Lucinda Wilson.
Calvin's father Asa (1772-1842)is also my ancestor.
Asa's father was Samuel Edney (b. abt. 1734). [Another son of this Samuel was the Rev. Samuel Edney (1765-1844), an early Methodist circuit riding preacher in the NC mountains.]
Samuel's father was Robert Edney, b. prob. before 1700.
Robert is the earliest known Edney in this family and probably came to eastern NC in the early 1720's from Maryland. Whether he was born there or emigrated from England to MD is not known.

If you will look for Henderson County, NC, I'm sure you'll find more information on the early Edney's, who came there from the community of South Mills in what is now Camden County, NC, near Elizabeth City, in the northeast corner of the state.

Good luck with your searches.
I am a long lost Edney, separated from the family when I was only a toddler. I am just looking to reach out and see who is out there I am currently related too.

I have been able to track my lineage only so far. Here is how I think I fit in.

I am Christina Edney, daughter of Barbara Bolduc Edney and Thomas Edney.
Thomas Edney is the son of Lois Edney and Thomas Edward Edney.
Thomas Edward Edney is the son of Bessie Mae Gallman Edney and George William Thomas Edney.
George William Thomas Edney is the son of Sally Jane Johnson and Will Edney.
Will Edney son of Martha Wheeler Edney and Wilson Edney.
Wilson Edney’s parents are unknown to me but his grandfather seems to be Calvin Jones Edney who was married to Lucinda Wilson.
Calvin Jones Edney is the son of Sarah Mills Edney and Asa Edney.

I do not know where the family tree branch goes from there.

I hope someone I am related too will reply.
