Finding your Egger ancestors in Switzerland

Another important consideration in searching for your Swiss Egger ancestors is their religion. Switzerland is quite strictly segregated on religious grounds. My Egger ancestors were catholic, and that meant that they were from the canton of St. Gallen, home of most catholic Eggers. Protestant Eggers are mainly from cantons Bern, Thurgau, Aargau and a few others.

We are trying to find out about our great-grandfather, Francois Egger, who was born in Fribourg, Switzerland and immigrated to New York. He was a sailor and married Jemima Calame in 1893. Is anyone related to Eggers from Fribourg, Switzerland or New York?

Sorry, but I do not know if my husband's Egger family is connected with yours. However, his father, Anton Jospeh Egger, born in Vienna, Austria, pointed out on the map to my husband the Canton of Bern where his grandfather was supposed to have been the mayor (is that the same as a berger/burgher?) of some community in Bern. My husband cannot remember the name of this small community, however.

The story goes that this great-grandfather was also a farmer and was suffocated under a load of hay. His name was Jacob Egger, but that is all we know of him.

His son was Franz Josef Egger, my husband's grandfather, and he was married to Veronica (English spelling for her first name) Surmann. Franz Josef Egger was supposed to have been born either in Bern, Switzerland or Vienna, Austria, in 1863. Franz Josef Egger died in 1923 in Illinois, USA.

This is all very vague. We have tried for many years to try to trace the Surmann/Egger families, but with no luck.

If you would care to respond, my e-mail address is campsiehills@sbcglobal.net.

Sincerely,

Maisie Egger
(wife of Joseph Anton Egger, California, USA)

Thanks so much for your reply. I am fairly new to this and not sure how to access the information you mentioned. I have seen microfilms mentioned but dont know where theyd be, or the church registers. I had no idea we could actually get to these records. Any tips would be much appreciated! Thanks, Janet

Our EGGERs (I can speak for Ron on this, as well as myself) originated in Grindelwald, near Bern. You will find the church registers there to be full of records, but I must warn that Mary is obviously a very common name. The LDS library system provides access to the microfilmed records from the 1500's to 1875.

Hi there, my Eggers are from Bern, Switzerland, also. But they were at an earlier date, Mary Egger 1836, I believe one of her uncles was Christian Egger. Often the names kind of stay in the family, with not only father passing them to sons and mothers to daughters but it seems they named children after a much loved relative too. My Mary Egger married Jacob Haberstitch, from Switzerland also. I cant seem to get back on that name though.

I am trying to find parents or siblings of Johann Egger. He immigrated aboard the Deutschland in June 1867 and settled in Sandusky,Ohio. Also aboard the Deutschland was a Georg Egger who I am thinking may have been a brother(no proof on this!) I thought maybe if I found more information on Georg,it would lead me to more information on Johann(John). When Johann immigrated he stated his birthplace was Reute,Germany. I believe he was Catholic since he went to the Catholic Church in Sandusky.
Any leads are appreciated!!!

Theodore M. “Ted” Egger b.St. Viet on the Glan, Austria

Changed his surname to Edgar

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Theodore M. “Ted” Edgar, 70, died on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010, at his home as the clock chimed 10 p.m., surrounded by his wife and daughters.

Theodore was born Oct. 28, 1939 in St. Viet on the Glan, Austria, a son of the late Matthius and Christine Amlacher Egger, came to America and Dimmit, Texas in 1951 with his mother after his father was killed in World War II.

After leaving the beautiful Austrian Alps for the flat lands of Texas, Ted moved to Youngstown, Ohio and its fire-filled smokestacks of U.S. Steel in 1953.

Ted attended Chaney High School, and worked for Martin’s Service Station, Rulli Brothers in downtown Youngstown, Anchor Cigar, Hynes Steel in Austintown,Ohio and Tamarkin-Giant Eagle for 31 years, retiring as a truck driver in 1999.

He was a member of the St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church on South Belle Vista Avenue.
He was also a member of Teamster’s Union Local No. 377.

Ted met his beautiful wife, Joan “Joni” Hudak Edgar, in September of 1958 at a Chaney High School football game and followed her to the Elms Ballroom Record Hop later that night. They remained together from that night until he took his last breath.

Ted and Joan were the first couple to be married at St. Mary Church. They wed on June 10, 1961, and were to have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary next year. Whenever he was asked by friends why he came to live in Youngstown, he would say, “to meet my Joni,” and his last spoken words were, “Joni, Joni.”

Ted lived his life to provide for his Joni and his children. Because of his long work hours, he often missed a lot of his daughter’s and grandchildren’s activities. He had a powerful fatherly love for his daughters, and was very protective of them, especially when boys began to call. His rules were sometimes strict, but that was all he knew.

Ted was proud of his Austrian heritage, and liked to share with others that the famous chef, Wolfgang Puck, was from his hometown. At 10 years old, he entered a downhill ski race and finished 10th, earning a prize of a chocolate bar and an orange. He loved playing soccer as a youth, and when he came to America and played basketball with his friends, he did not understand the game. He would play it as if he were playing soccer, and only years later would his friends finally figure out what he was doing.

Ted was a quiet man, content with being at home.
He enjoyed working outdoors, with his beloved Joni at his side.
After he retired, he began to enjoy his free time by journeying on many vacations; among them a trip to Freemont, Indiana to visit the birthplace of James Dean; a trip to Las Vegas to see Elvis Presley and his personal suite; to Kure Beach, North Carolina; to Riviera Maya, Mexico, in 2008, where he was able to see the Mayan ruins that interested him so; a trip to Aruba last summer; and a road trip last September across the United States, stopping in Dimmit to visit the ranch where he once lived, then off to the Grand Canyon, where they u-turned and headed back east.
To celebrate his 50th birthday, Ted took Joni back to Austria to share with her his childhood memories. The couple rented a car and traveled through Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and Yugoslavia.

Over the years, Ted owned several motorcycles. When he reached 30 years of working, Joni got for him the Harley-Davidson he always wanted - “loud and fast!”

Ted was full of good advice, and recently told his granddaughter that, “God gives you one brain to use - don’t let other people influence your choices in life.” Ironically, he would also say, “when I go, Joni can take my brain and sell it at a garage sale - ‘like new, slightly used!’” When asked questions, he would always look to Joni for the answers.

Besides his beloved Joni, Ted leaves four daughters, Debra Jane, Denise Ann Zordich, Donna Christine Rosile and Davene Marie (David) Gordon; favorite granddaughter; Dominique Ann Joan Zordich; favorite grandson, Matthew Allen Rosile; favorite grandson, Brian Edward Zordich; favorite granddaughter; Nicholette Christine Zordich; favorite granddaughter, Divine Marie Gordon; special favorite grandson; and godson, Davis Edgar Gordon.

An infant sister is deceased.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010 at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown, Ohio
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home, and continue at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church.

Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Ted’s family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Valley, or to Second Harvest Food Bank.

Ted’s family wishes to thank the most caring and compassionate doctors and staff that attended to Ted’s medical needs over the years: Most recently, his family thanks the OVER-WORKED and UNDER-STAFFED personnel at St. Elizabeth Health Center on Belmont Avenue.

Ted thanked God daily for the gifts that he received, and for all that was given to him by God.

Please visit kinnickfuneralhome.com to view this obituary and to send condolences online to Ted’s family.

Mahoning

I would love to hear more about your search and what your brother Ed has found. You can find what I have found on The Carpenter Family Tree. My family was very secretive and we never knew much of our history. Then my mother, Patricia Anderson, got Colorado Pioneer license plates. That sure got my interest up!

EGGER CEMETARY

There is an EGGER CEMETARY located in CALEDONIA MISSISSIPPI near Aberdeen-Tupelo area. Some of the graves there date back to the 1700's. I was very surprised to have stumbled on to this place by accident when my boyfriend went to pick an old schoolmate to come and visit us. His friend's family land actually backs up to this cemetary which happens to be my maiden name. I was so very surprised. I WAS TOLD THAT There are allot of the Egger family still living in that area also. This place is in the country (rural) area-farmland. I would have never found it on my own. Info from Monroe -Lowndes county MS may help you find some of the people you are looking for. My father is ROBERT C. EGGER DOB 7-6-1927 STILL LIVING BORN IN AMORY, MS TO MINNIE PUCKETT EGGER AND MOTHER IS URSULA B. GILENKIRCHEN - EGGER DOB 11-8-1931 BORN IN GERMANY. SISYERS- SUSAN C. EGGER AND JOAN M. EGGER. We are trying to locate any other family outside the Amory, MS area. Please email me at MICHELE.COULTER@YAHOO.COM. THANKS

I too am researching the Egger family. My great grandmother was Veronika Egger, the youngest of 12. she came over about 1885. she came with family(sisters, brothers or cousins). Her mother's name was Anna Gurna(not sure how to spell. Father was Francis or Frederich who was farmer with lots of land. Only paperwork I have says she came from Silesia which I believe was part of Austria but she was Polish.

Hi Kathy,
I do not know anything about her ancestors or her ex-husband ( ? Egger).
I believe that either she or her husband had money from what my grandmother has told me.
Anna owned quite a bit of property in Warren, PA.
my grandmother told me that there was a John Struken related to Anna and Fred Strtucken was his son, (Florines's age b. abt 1890-1910) also a Bob Srucken somehow Related. I do not know the relationship of any of these people though.

Anna was born about 1839, possibly in Berne, My grandmother has a couple of items that say they are from Berne.
She had at least 2 children, Margretha and Fred (Probably Gotfried).

Anna came to New york at the age of 53 with Gottfried Dasen, her son-in-law and his daughter Theresa, here is her info from her passenger record:
-----------------------------------------

Name: Egger, Anna

Ethnicity: Switzerland

Date of Arrival: August 22, 1892

age on arrival: 53y

Gender: F

Ship of Travel: La Bretagne

Port of Departure: Le Havre, Seine-Inferior, France

------------------------------
Did your Anna come to the States? I really don't know how to go about finding anything in Switzerland... Do you know any more about your Anna's relatives (siblings, cousins or children)?

Deana
