Re: Daniel L. Ehrman

There was Daniel L. Ehrman who died Dec. 30, 1904, in Panama born in the US probably at New Orleans. It is in Ancestry records of "Reports of Deaths of American Citizens Abroad 1835-1874." In the mid 1800s there were Ehrmans in Pennsylvania and later in the 1800s in Cincinnati. And many in St. Louis. To find the best kept records for Europeans go to JewishGen.org on Ancestry. My Grandfather was the first American born of his Alsace Lorraine Jewish family. Part of his family practiced Judaism and part Grandma's catholicism. The Jews lived on the east side of town, the catholics the west side. A connecting highway was finally built across town in the late 1990s going past the building housing the Genome project at the time. The Russian German Ehrman's are in the Ukraine and the web site for them by their family is very informative with drawings of town set ups. The Wisconsin Ehrmans are up on the rivers also. Jews were the last peoples in Europe to be forced to have a sir name. The constitution of the USA changed the world at that time. So Ehrman, my ancestors told me, is honor man and I have found that in many books to be true. Knowing my 1874 born Grandpa as well as I did, the name fits. He had a son Danny born in 1903, who was only with them 2 weeks. There is no death certificate and we celebrated his birthday every year until someone prayed for Danny to come home. Where or how he died is still a mystery. I don't put much stock in non legal documents. I have never found his death certificate. But he was Cincinnati born. Happy Honor Trails along the rivers in Indiana also.

Margorie,
I have information on the Panama Ehrmans. However, in looking thru my files I don't find any reference to a Ramon Ehrman. I have references to Ramona Ehrmans but no Ramon. In my files I have Guillermo, Juan, Nathan and Henry.
Could you tell me who your grandfather Ramone was married to? Perhaps I can come up with some information.
Henry Ehrman is my great-grand uncle.

Richard Ehrman

Bio of Jacob Ernan [1820-1901], son of George

According to The History of Defiance County, Ohio: Containing a history of the county; its townships, towns, etc.: military record; portraits of early settlers and prominent men; farm views, personal reminiscences, etc. [Warner, Beers & Company: Chicago, 1883], p. 362, Jacob's brief biography in this source states:

"Jacob Erman was born in Rockingham County, Va., February 4, 1820. His grandfather, George Erman, was a Hessian, born in Prussia, whose wife was born in Switzerland. He came to America, was married, and settled in York County, Penn., and served in the Revolution under Gen. Washington. George Erman, father of our subject, was born in York County, Penn., and, in 1806, married Sarah Argenbright, a native of Rockingham County, Va. They have ten children--John, Polly, Malinda, Delilah, Ann, Jacob, George, Elijah, Caroline and Amanda Jane. February 1, 1844, Jacob married Lucy A. Churchman, daughter of Thomas and Susan Churchman. She was born in Preble County, Ohio, October 12, 1822. Her grandfather, Thomas Churchman, was born in London, England. Mahlon O. Erman, the only child of Jacob and Lucy Erman, was born April 3, 1848, married Serena J. Purtee, daughter of Capt. John and Nancy [Brown] Purtee, and resides in Section 28, this township. Jacob Erman resides on his farm, Section 29. He came to this country in 1853."

Please note that there is a question among researchers whether "grandfather, George Erman" was really "a Hessian, born in Prussia."

In the Decatur [Illinois] Review Jan 4, 1924 the Story of Decatur published a story about Mrs. Isaac Ehrman (Virginia). In the story it references a book held by Mrs. Frances Marshall. The book has inscription from her grandmother - Lavinia Williams. I am interested in whether the book still exists and who owns it. Mrs. Marshall had one child - Marion Marshall. Marion Marshall married Charles Crumbaker in Indianapolis, In. In 1919 they had a son - Chares Marshall Crumbaker.

Yes, I am still working on the Ehrman line. I have a vague recollection that I have seen some kind of reference to a Charles Ehrman, a photographer who lived during the time frame you mention, but I'm sorry I can't find anything in my database about him. I also searched several folders but can't find the reference I was looking for. Do you have any other info about him. I don't see a Charles Ehrman of any age living in Lancaster in the 1860 or 1870 census records.

You're right, it would have to be a male - do you have any male Ehrman who could be tested? I believe FamilyTree has the biggest database. Do you have a tree on Ancestry or one of the other genealogy websites?

Thanks for the death dates for Jacob and Catherine and thanks also for sharing the DNA websites with me. So far, I find it all pretty confusing. I know some tests are for males only, so I must investigate if there are any that I can actually participate in. I hope we can tie all these Pennsylvania Ehrmans [and others] together someday. Good luck in your search !

I have 24 Jul 1903 for Jacob and Catherine passed 8 May 1904. Have you done DNA?
YSearch is: http://www.ysearch.org/
familytreedna: http://www.familytreedna.com/
Family Tree has surname projects - this is the one that includes Ehrman - but we don't match any one in it:
www.familytreedna.com/public/Auman Orman Armon Ormond Families/
There is also a DNA group in which we do match 3 people which means we have a common ancestor, but it could be between 20 to 50 generations back:
R-ht35 (M269+ P312- U106-) DNA Project

It is all very fascinating and hard for me to understand. I was hoping that the DNA would provide answers for Jacob's family, but so far it has not. There is a Harold Ehrman website (http://www.ehrman.net)and we have a common ancestor with him way back, but I don't know who it is. I look forward to sharing more info with you. Thanks.

The only other thing I have in my notes is: "An examination of the original list shows that 23 year old Jacob Ehrman traveled with a 21 year old Emanuel Ehrman." So it does appear that Jacob may have traveled with someone. It's possible that Jacob did have siblings even though they are not mentioned in his will. It is natural to just leave your estate to your wife and children, so there would probably be no mention of siblings. Can you give me a URL for the DNA websites ? I don't know much about it. I do have that William H. Ehrman m. Lydia Westerman, possibly info you passed on to me. I haven't done much research on these folks because they are not related to me [as far as I know]. I don't have any other Westermans in my database. Please keep my email in your notes for future reference [Lsc12147@aol.com]. What do you have as Jacob's death date ?

I have not considered that Jacob may have come over with siblings or to meet them here. He was young and it is a possiblity that he and brothers came over. Is it discernable from the immigration records if there were other Ehrmans on the ship with Jacob? We have a tree on Ancestry.com. My brother had his DNA done, so we have this line of Ehrman dna. We are posted on the YSearch and FamilyTreeDNA sites. Right now they have us as R1b1b2. There are other Ehrmans lines with different dna results on these sites. I also just received Jacob's last will from the Butler archives last week. It does not mention siblings, only his wife and children, but he was approximately 83 when he died, so his siblings may have predeceased him - or moved away. I have Jacob & his descendents, but nothing on siblings or parents. Do you have anything? I too believe we have replied to each other in message boards before. Good to "talk" with you again. By the way, one of Jacob's sons married Lydia Westerman - do have any Westerman's? Thanks for your information.

Hi, sorry, no this is not my tree, but I am interested in the Ehrman surname. We may have chatted before. Did you ever find Jacob's parents ? There was a Michael Ehrman b. 1825 who lived in Beaver County, Pa. in 1860. There is also Conrad Ehrman b. abt. 1825 living in Beaver Co. in 1860, who were of the correct age to possibly be siblings to Jacob, who lived in Butler Co. in 1860.

It's good to know that that 1848 immigration record probably belongs to your Jacob !

How exciting, we do indeed have a connection! I have Jacob and his family in the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 census reports still in Butler, PA. Caroline apparently married and lost her husband because she is back with Jacob in the census reports. Cstherine is also the executrix of Jacob's will in 1903 with the name of Ellerman. The 1900 census says that he immigrated in 1848. I have Jacob forward, but not before coming to America. Do you have information about Jacob's parents and/or Catherine's parents? Jacob is my paternal great great grandfather and his son, William Henry Ehrman is my great grandfather. Is this your tree, too?

A Jacob and Catherine Ehrman settled in Cincinnati,Ohio, in 1873 or 1874. Born in 1839 and 1836, they lived in Alsace Lorraine which fell under French rule,so they left. They spoke German, had Jewish ties, practiced Catholicism and their name means honor man.
There was a Homeopathist college in Pennslyvania they attened to be practioners of homeopathy in Cincinnati.
Some of their kin settled in St.Louis, Missouri.
Need any more info on this branch I'll be glad to share.
I knew their son, born when they first arrived, very well.
momvera

A Jacob Ehrmann came to Cincinnati, Ohio, USA about 1873. Some of the

family

were Homeopathic doctors degreeded in Pennsylvania later. I was told several

times while residing with his son, my grandfather, that the family was Jewish

from

Alsace Lorraine. And that it was important for me to remember that, but not

to

advertise that. I was born during WWII. Our Jacob was born 12/19/1839 and

died here 6/14/1913 after a life-long marriage to Catherine Gehring.

I was also told to remember that Catherine's death certificate, informed by

undertake,

spelled her name Gehringer and it would take a court order to get it

corrected. Since WWI has just ended money to do so was not available.

Jacob, their first child, was born in France, in 1865. And his sister,

Magadelena, in 1872. Then Alsace became Germany and they became

American. Benj. F. Ehrman is also listed in the 1890 Cincinnati City Directory

as an attorney. My grandfather told me in 1964 to make sure they open the

1900/2000 city hall time capsule. The directory was in it but was opened before

2000 by the mayor.

Hope this helps.

, This is the information I have on my line - wonder if it connects with your line.
1. Jacob Ehrman born Wurtemburg, Germany 1818-1820
married Catherine (?) b. 1824/1904 Wurtemburg.
2. William Henry Ehrman (1850-1935), Butler, PA
m. Lydia Westerman (1859-1937) (dau. of
Joseph Westerman 1819/1820 b. Hanover,
Germany and Catherine Shultz, dau. of George
(1798) and Margaret Shultz
3. Harry Samuel Ehrman (1879-1957)
m. Nannie Belle McCafferty (1874-
1964) dau. of James McCafferty (1806-
1876) and Martha Jane Love, dau. of
Robert Love (1798-1882) and Sarah
Holstein (1802-1895) dau. of Mathias
Holstein and Jane Johnston/Johnson

Did you ever find the information you were searching for? Do you know why she died so young? FYI - Harry Samuel Ehrman and Harold Burdel Ehrman both had Huntington's disease. Does this run in your family? We are not sure where it comes from, but you have to have the disease in order to pass it on - and it was late onset for Harold, but confirmed by DNA tests. Would be interested in hearing from you.

The Catharina previously mentioned, daughter of John George Ehrman and Catharina Shaffer, was born on April 17, 1783. I do not believe that this is the Catharina you are looking for.

However, I do have a Catharine Ehrman in my database, daughter of Jacob Ehrman and Elizabeth (unknown last name). This Catharine was born in abt. 1805. Sorry, I do not know who she married, but she could be the one you are looking for. Catherine's father Jacob is the son of John George Ehrman and Catharina Shaffer. It is thought that Catherine's father Jacob died rather young because he had 5 minor children at his death, ranging from about 1 to 9 years of age according to Records of the Orphans Court found at the Historical Society Library in York (dated April 10, 1812). I'd be happy to share more if you think we connect.
