People who research the line of Gilbert Elam and Susannah (very likely Cannon) give the date of birth of their supposedly first child, a son, William Cannon Elam, as about 1765. I am not sure if this is any more than a guess on their part. They give his date of death as 9 July 1855 in Caney, Morgan Co., Kentucky. I have not tried to verify this, but could not find him in the 1850 census to see what age he was listed as.

Cecilie Gaziano, cgaziano@prodigy.net and cgaziano1@gmail.com.

Appreciate your interest. Here's one response I received not too long after posting the same message on another board:

"It appears that your ancestors, Leah Elam and James Jonathan Youngblood, themselves were not related to the Elder John family, nor were their descendants. They did have a connection to survivors of the Fort Parker massacre.

Their daughter, Leah Jane Youngblood, married Francis Marion Dwight b. 1844 who was the son of Malinda Frost and George E. Dwight. Malinda Frost, George E. Dwight, their infant daughter Elizabeth, and Malinda's mother, Elizabeth Frost, were among the survivors of the Fort Parker Massacre. Malinda Frost Dwight's father, Samuel Frost, and brother, Robert Frost, were killed by the Comanches.

Although they shared their migration, their settlement, and their worship, no blood or marital ties were found so far that connected the Frosts or Dwights to the family of Elder John Parker."

Ann Elam Cont - Gilbert Elam's will and wives: Jane Nunnally & Susannah

To add to the mix here the following indicating that a Jane Nunnally was the first wife of said Gilbert Elam under discussion here - but nothing specifically about Gilbert Elam's daughter Ann:

First I want to mention a very well researched and documented book on the Nunnaly/Nunnelee family: Jean Nunley Dennison, "Our Nunnally/Nunley Family", Nashville, TN: Privately Published, 1997.

With regard to Gilbert Elam and Jane Nunnally, page 212 of Dennison's book lists Jane Nunnaly (d/o John Nunnaly) as wife of Gilbert Elam and on pps. 382-384 John Nunnally's full will. Dennison's objective was not to prove Jane Nunnally's marriage to the Gilbert Elam under discussion here but rather to make the connections up and down for the Nunnally/Nunnelee line. The only mention of Elams in this full will is to daughter Jane, deceased, her child and son-in-law Gilbert Elam. Aside from this Elam-Nunnally connection, she also has several other Elam-Nunnally/Nunnelee marraiges in early Virginia.

John Nunnally's will is also found in abridged form transcribed below:

Weisiger, Benjamin B. III, "Chesterfield County, Virginia Wills 1749-1774", Athens, Georgia: Iberian Publishing Co., 1988. p. 89

Will Book #2
"Will of John Nunnally 9 May 1765

To son John, 1 shilling
To son in law Elam Farmer, 1 shilling
To grandchildren Elam Farmer, Jr. and Martha Farmer, 1 shilling
To daughter Sarah Jackson, 1 shilling
To son in law Gilbert Elam, 1 shilling
To my late daughter Jane Elam, dec'd to her child, 1 shilling
To daughter Ann Flournoy, 1 negro Cesar
To daughter Margaret Nunnally, 1 negro named Doctor
To daughter Rebecca Nunnally, 1 negro
To son Archelaus, 150 acres with plantation he lives on, land I bought of Robert Rickman, and 1 negro
To son Jeremiah, land I bought of Peter Blandkinship, 100 acres, 1 negro, and items
To son Thomas, part of land I live on, on south side of Spring Branch, also to him negroes and items, and he is to give his brother Jeremiah Pds 10 when he is of age.
To wife Margaret, use of plantation I live on for life, except part I gave son Thomas, and all land 306 acres to said Thomas, entailed to him; also to wife negroes.
Executrix: wife Margaret
Wit: John Ellis, Agnes Markham, Nath. Tanner
The land I gave Archelaus by will, he has sold to his brother in law John Ellis. To son Jermiah, 1 negro girl
Dated 19 Oct. 1765
Wit: Nath. Tanner, Elam Farmer"

If this will is pertinent (meaning referring to the same Gilbert Elam - alas so many Gilbert Elams AND Elam - Nunnally/Nunnelee marriages!!), then it is clear from John Nunnally's will that daughter Jane Nunnally Elam was deceased by 1765, and that John Nunnally left one shilling to her child, unfortunately not named, and also one shilling to his son-in-law, Gilbert Elam. If this is the same Gilbert Elam then Susannah mentioned in Gilbert's will of 1771 would be the second wife and Jane Nunnally the first wife.

Question: Any notion as to when the Gilbert Elam under discussion married wife Susannah?

Regards, Barry Michie

PS: This is not my line but collateral research - long ago put aside - in an unsuccessful attempt to break through a brick wall trying to figure out if one Keziah Elam is the same Keziah (d. abt 1810 Elbert Co GA) the first wife of John Franklin Nunnelee (3 Jan 1760, VA - 15 Feb 1838, Elbert Co, GA). Said "best suspect" Keziah Elam is , d/o Gilbert Elam IV & Elizabeth Scott, he s/o Gilbert Elam III and Mary Unknown, he s/o , Gilbert Elam, Jr & Mary Hatcher, he s/o Gilbert Elam (1630-1696) from Yorkshire England. All these Elams were first in Henrico and then Chesterfield counties, VA. Said John Franklin Nunnelee's family was also in Henrico and Chesterfield counties under various spellings including Nunnally. John Franklin Nunnelee's father, William Womack Nunnally (c. 1738 - 13 Nov 1804) migrated from Chesterfield Co VA into the Carolinas and then on to Elbert Co GA.

As a characterization of this early colonial research, there is such a swirl of marriages, re-marriages (often to dead spouses' close relatives, eg. the above Elizabeth Scott), common names across generations that sorting it all out is quite a challenge!
Re: Ann Elam

Ann was the daughter of Gilbert Elam's first wife, not Susannah, as Gilbert's will shows. I have seen his first wife's name as Jane Nunnally, but don't know what evidence there is for that name. I believe that Susannah, wife of Gilbert Elam who died in Chesterfield Co., VA, in 1784, was a Cannon -- the daughter of Benjamin Cannon and Susannah Walters of Henrico, Cumberland, and Prince Edward counties, Virginia, because 6 out of 7 names of Susannah’s children are names found in Benjamin Cannon & Susannah Walters’s family. These are: Benjamin for her father, Walters for her mother’s maiden name, Francina/Francinia for her sister, Jeremiah for her brother, Susannah for her mother and herself, and William Cannon Elam (possibly the name of Benjamin Cannon's father, that is, William Cannon.)

Benjamin and Susannah had two known children, Jeremiah Cannon (who died in Goochland Co., VA, in 1767) and Francinia (who married William Cox in Cumberland Co. on 27 May 1768).

Chesterfield County, VA Will Book 3, p.435.

Will of Gilbert Elam

Lend to wife Susanna, items and use of my plantation below the Spring Br., and my daughter Martha to have liberty of the house while single, then after death to son Robert, and if he die without heirs of his body, then to his brother Walter. Also to wife, my household stock, and then to her children then living: Bille Cannon Elam, Franseina Elam, Benjamin Elam, Robert Elam, Walters Elam, Susannah Elam and Jeremiah Elam. [Note: Bille Cannon Elam is William Cannon Elam.]

To son James Elam and Lodwick Elam and Gilbert Elam and Godfree Elam and daughters Ann Godsee, Martha Elam, Susan Keill [could be Hill, some people say], and part of daughter Martha Elam shall belong to her daughter Bette Ann Elam.

Rest to be divided between my wife Susanna and my children above named

To son Burwell, land above Spring Br., up to Flournoy's line

To daughter Jene [Jane] Elam, I negro

Executors: Richard Elam and Barkley Elam
Dated 18 Sept. 1771
Wit: Math'w Farley, Dan'l Elam, Wm Sims, Dan'l Elam, Jr.

Chesterfield County, VA Order Book 6, p. 525. Court of 7 May 1784

Will of Gilbert Elam proved; Matthew Farley and Daniel Elam, witnesses; Susannah Elam, widow of Gilbert Elam, relinquishes her claim to estate.
Leah Jane Elam

According to my information, she was born in Tennessee on 18 March 1813 and died 23 May 1885 in Wise County, Texas. She married James Jonothan Youngblood, b. 28 June 1810 in Warren County, Tennessee d. 1889 in Wise County, Texas.

I'm trying to find a connection between Leah Jane Elam's family and the family of Cynthia Ann Parker.

The Parker family, originally from Virginia, moved from Kentucky to Texas in the early 1830s and established Parker's Fort on the fringes of the Comanche frontier. On May 19, 1836, the Comanche and Kiowa attacked the fort killing most of the residents and capturing several women and children.

The captives were Mrs. Rachel Plummer, her fifteen-month-old son James, Mrs. Elizabeth Kellogg and the Parker children, Cynthia Ann, nine-years old and John, children of Silas Parker. The captives were scattered among the various bands of the two tribes. Later, the two women and the Plummer child were ransomed to friendly Indians and returned them to their families.

Cynthia Ann Parker was the mother of Quanah Parker, who became the leader of the 700 Comanche and Kiowa braves who attacked the buffalo hunters at the famous fight of Adobe Walls, in June of 1874, in the Texas panhandle. This is the battle where buffalo hunter Billy Dixon made the famous "mile long shot".

I searched this surname archive, and did find a couple of references to the Parker surname - but no definitive association with these Parkers. I'm hoping to hear from anyone with more information.

Thanks

Richard,
The John Elam that built my home, Westview, in western Charlotte County is a different John Elam than your g-g-grandfather and this is a different house from the one you visited. "My" John Elam had four children, three girls and a boy, none of whom had any children. They are all buried on my front lawn. Your direct line is descended from one of my John Elam's brothers but I can't tell you which one. The Elams were a prolific bunch and there is a lot of Elam info on-line (some good, some bad),so you should be able to find the correct line. Kathy

The house you live in was built by my Great Great Grandfather. His son (my Great Grandfather) was Richard Andrew Elam. His son (my Grandfather) was George Baskerville Elam. His son (my father) was George Baskerville Elam, Jr.(born May 21, 1920). I was named for Richard Andrew Elam. The Elam family gave the land across the street so that the Church could be built. I even have a burial site set aside for me and my wife. A John Taylor there in South Hill, Va is one of the grand kids. His mother was the daughter of Richard Andrew Elam. If John is still living, he can really give you a history of the house. He gave me a tour back in 1993 when it was owned by someone other than a family member. You can contact me at raunderdog@yahoo.com because this is the only time I've ever visited this site. Cordially, Richard Andrew Elam

Ruth—

If my information is correct, you are my fifth cousin. I believe my 4th great grandfather [Alexander Augustus Elam] was the father of your Alexander Elam from Chesterfield VA.

My line is as follows:

John Dwight Elam (my father) (1903 -1979)
John Williamson Elam (my paternal grandfather) (1874-1932)
John Edward Elam (1834-1901)
Josephus Elam (1807-1868)

John Elam (1787-1824)—married Elizabeth Elam (1789-1857), daughter of Alexander Augustus Elam (1762-1799) & Jane Norment (1764-1814)

Edward Elam Jr (1765-1840)
Edward Elam Sr (1734-1811)
John Edward Elam Sr (1688-1761) born & died in Henrico, VA

Martin Elam Sr (1635-1695) born in St Helens, Thurnscoe, Yorkshire, England & died in Bermuda Hundred, Henrico, VA

Thomas Elam (1597-1687) born in Thurnscoe, Yorkshire, England & died in Henrico, VA

James Elam (1572-1619)—born & died in Thurnscoe, Yorkshire, England

The information I have compiled indicates the following ancestors of Alexander Augustus:

Joel Elam (1736-1798)—brother of Edward Elam Sr
John Edward Elam Sr (1688-1761)
Martin Elam Sr (1635-1695)
Thomas Elam (1597-1687)
James Elam (1572-1619)

As I have pieced the information together, in about 1814 Edward Elam Jr and his family (2nd wife Lettice Chaffin & his 11 children including his oldest child, John) emigrated from Mecklenburg County, Virginia to Lawndale, Rutherford County [now Cleveland County], North Carolina.

Prior to that, Elizabeth Elam’s father had died in 1799 and her mother then died in 1814. Elizabeth’s grandparents [Joel Elam (1736-1798) and Phoebe Hill (1738-1785)} had 9 children including Alexander Augustus and Martha “Patty” Elam [1765-Bef 1810]. Martha had married Jesse Anderson Grigg [1732-1815) in 1786. Martha & Jesse had emigrated from Virginia to Lawndale, Rutherford County, North Carolina in 1797.

Since all of Elizabeth’s parents and grandparents had died before 1814, I believe all 9 children of Alexander Augustus and Jane (five of whom had already married) emigrated to Rutherford County, North Carolina in about 1814---following their sister Martha “Patty” Grigg. It is possible all of Elizabeth’s brothers & sisters went with their first cousin--Edward Elam Jr & his family to Rutherford County NC since it appears they emigrated to NC about the same time.

In about 1828, a few years after Elizabeth’s husband John had died, she, her 3 sons (including Josephus) & her father-in-law [Edward Elam Jr] emigrated from NC to Sumner County, Tennessee. They stayed there only a few years, emigrating from TN to Bond County, Illinois in about 1833. My part of the Elam clan has stayed in the Bond County/Fayette County part of Southern Illinois since then.

I have a lot more information (dates, places, and a few pictures, etc) if you are interested.

Do you still live in Arkansas? I now live in Charlotte, NC—about 1 hour from Lawndale, where the clan immigrated to.

Best of luck on your genealogy search.

Dale Elam
Ruth, the information that I have about Alexander Elam Jr, born in 1797, is his parents were Alexander Elam Sr, born in 1762, and Jane Norment. The parents of Alexander Elam Sr. were Joel Elam, born in 1736, and Phebe Hill.
Lallie Wetzig

I find that Alexander Elam, b. 1796 in Va. was married to Elizabeth Betsy Grigg, b. 27 Dec 1798 in Rutherford, NC, d. 18 Nov 1839 in Bond, Il. I cannot find parents for Alexander, but Elizabeth's parents are: Burrell Grigg, 1766-1837, and Sabra ELAM, 1768-1835. Children: Philip Elam. 1935, Abner Elam, 1834, Martha Elam, 1836, William Elam, 1838, Alexander Elam, 1840. Alexander was married also to
a second wife. I will send the name and information later.
I found a Joel Elam son of Alexander Elam (1762-1799) and Jane "Norment" Elam (1764-1814). He married Susanna Elam on Feb. 17, 1812 and had 4 children from this union, Archibald S., Ann Elizabeth, Elijah & Drury B. Married Mary Aiken on June 11, 1824 and had 4 children from this union, Eleanor, Joel Alexander, Mary Ellen & Frances S. Married Frances Smith in 1836 and had 2 children from this union, George Washington and martin Jefferson.

Greetings Justin,
My name is April Elium-Allan. My Great, Great, Great grandparents were James and Elizabeth Casper Elam from Rowan County, NC. They had 4 Children, Benjamin (my GG Grandfather), Thomas, Chalmus, and Nancy. Our family, well the ones that are doing the research, know very little about James. We know that he had 2 brothers and they were stone masons. We know that the family came from England to the states but not sure when. I have my GG grandfather's death record and it says that James was born in Woodstock, VA but we can find no birth, death records on James.

It may be possible that our families are related.

April

Your grandfather, David Franklin Elam was a brother to my husband's grandfather, Ed Elam so, I guess that makes y'all second cousins.

We begin with Harley Andrew Jackson Elam, currently alive. Born in Pomeroyton, KY 1936. Raised in Frenchburg, KY area. Joined the Air Force and traveled world. Married Edna Moore of West Liberty, KY and fathered Anthony Brad Elam, Serena (Elam) Whitehair, and Tina (Elam) Hufford.

His parents were: Rollie Herbert Elam and Virgie(Lawson) Elam.

Rollie's parents: John Harve Elam (1872 - 1962) and Stella (Cassidy) Elam (1878-1951)

Virgie's parents: Andrew Jackson Lawson (of Virginia Cherokee descent)
(d. 1933) and Mary (Williams) Lawson (d.1956). Virgie had a brother named Ishmael Lawson.

That's as far was we've been able to trace. Initial KY counties of interest are Mennifee, Morgan, Wolf, Montgomery, and Clark. We have reason to believe Andrew Jackson Lawson was a Cherokee from Virginia, not NC or GA. There appears to be no connection with the Trail of Tears Cherokee or those living in NC.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, y'all!

DEW

The Anderson Elam to whom I referred was born in Virginia, but lived his adult life in Rutherford/Cleveland County, NC. He died there in 1878.

Sherry - I found some information on a William Weatherford who also had Creek Indian connections in the early 1800's. It almost sounds like he and Charles "Red Eagle" Weatherford were in same places at same times. www.weatherford.com tells about a book about William. It is listed as a documented historical novel. I have, however, seen mention of William Weatherford as a real person. How this is all connected to Letisha Weatherford Elam, I have no idea.

Mary Beth

I have found some mention of a Charles Weatherford who was also known as Red Eagle. He was connected to the Creeks at the time of the War 1812. He married the daughter of a chief and I assume they had children. But I cannot see a connection to Latisha Weatherford Elam, w/o Anderson. Charles seems, at best, a distant cousin. Letty was in VA and NC. The Creeks were in Florida and Alabama. But I am sure that I do not yet know everything in this connection. The name Red Eagle, however, is a name to look for.

Mary Beth

New Elam page

I've just started an Elam surname page at http://www.genealogywise.com/group/theelamfamilypage for all Elams to talk family history, chat, etc. My hope is that it will become an online gathering place for cousins from all branches of the family and that we'll have plenty of lively discussions! Let's all get to know one another better. Hope to see you there.
