Hello Cousin!

I am only using ancestry.ca this weekend because it was FREE! I have a fair bit of our "Doherty/Storey" tree, and will share happily with you, but suggest we use our own email addresses. I am marthahitch@yahoo.com
I live in Oakville Ontario, and am one of four remaining offspring of William Murray Doherty, and Audrey Isobel Griffith, both of Toronto, and Dad was Violet and Alfred's only child. Alfred had a first wife Fanny Mae Beuley (SP?) Beaulie? who died (Drowned I think) and they had 3 boys from that union...2 survived, Ted and Ormsby...details to follow. Hey! Thanks for the note, and I will send what I am able to! Cheers for now, and enjoy your weekend!

Martha Hitch (nee Doherty) 905-333-5597

Hi Cousin. We are definitely related. My father was Frank Clayton Elford, August 8, 1908-March 11, 1965. His father was William Herbert Elford, Sept 3 1869-Sept 22 1921. William's sister was Minnie K. Elford May 6 1863-June 21, 1950. Minnie married Rev. Alexander Kelham Birks, Sept 24 1861-June 27, 1917. Their son was Ray Thornley Birks. Ray married Margaret Alice Storey on Sept 24, 1918 in Toronto. I show Violet's birthdate as Nov 29, 1881, and she married Alfred James Doherty on June 12, 1916. I have no other information about the Doherty's, so please tell me more. Regards, Evelyn. Please contact me by email ebrownlow@rogers.com.

The name Frank Clayton Elford appeared by my grandmother's name when I searched for her records. This was possibly her mother's maiden name? My grandmother was Violet Florence Storey, and she was born in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Nonember 28th, 1881. I know her father was William Trench Storey, who spent most of his life in or around Toronto. My Father was William Murray Doherty. Violet had a brother Murray Storey and a sister Alice Birks (nee Storey)...do you know of these relatives? or any more history? My father made out quite a geneological table but it is sometimes hard to decipher. Do you think we may be related somehow?

Hello,
Thanks for your email. My name is Liz Winney and I am researching the name of ElFORD as a One-Name Study.
I think your late grandmother must have been contacted by the late Mrs Laura Elford, who wrote a book called "The Elfords - The Story of an ancient English family", back in the 1970's.

Unfortunately the book is now out of print and copies are extremely hard to come by. I have some extracts however.
I believe the Plymouth & West Devon Record Office and the Devon RO at Exeter have copies but don't lend them out.

If you can give me your grandmother's date of birth or any other info , I will look up in my databases to see what I can find out and come back to you.

Regards, Liz
Hello, I believe that you contacted my late grandmother Margaret Anne Elford(previously Bindon)in Devon a few years ago, as you were researching the Elford family history and had written a book. I am the daughter of her son, David Elford and would really like to find out more about our family history. My dad remembers the book, but not what it was called or who wrote it. Would you have any idea of where I can find a copy of the book?
Thankyou

Hi Pia,

Welcome to the Group.

If you are new to family history, you start with yourself, then your parents, then grandparents and so on. You need your parents dates of birth, marriage and death and places and any other info they can tell you or you know already.

Ideally you should get all the certificates to prove the information, but they do cost £7 each.

You also need access to the Ancestry website - either free from your local library or on a subscription basis - Basic UK records (if you are in the UK) would be sufficient to start with. It's not cheap at about £85 p.a. but does have all the censuses apart from the 1911 one.

A very good book is Mark Herber's "Ancestral Trails" which will tell you all you need to know.

If you get stuck, do email me again and I will help you.
Finally - don't believe everything you are told by family!

Liz Winney

I have checked out the site and as I thought no date of birth for Thomas but there is a difference in place of birth. We have him down as Ston Easton Somerset which is were his family lived for generations his brother David Elford was a Stone Mason in Ston Easton until his death in 1900's I doubt he was born in Hampshire but he could have. As Thomas left for Oz in 1853 there should be a referance for him in 1851 census. I do not have access to Ancestry so cannot check it out at the moment.

Regards

I don't have his date-of-birth, however the dates you say he sailed to Australia seem to fit.

I descend from Thomas Henry Elford - being one of the 10 children Thomas and Rosetta.

Do you have any info you'd like to share?
Hi Karen,
Sorry only just got your reply, I am also a direct descendant of George Henly Elford, his Grandaughter Fanny Andrews married Henry Daniel Tasker, who is my 2 x great Grandfather,I have found many Taskers back to 1745 In Buckinghamshire, but have not had much luck with the Elford's. I am currently working on Margaret Burton (George's wife) and her family. So which one of Henry's son's are you from, mine is Percy.

Sam

Hi Sam, I don't know why but your message (although dated 2007) seems only just to have been received on Ancestry!
Briefly, George & Margaret ELFORD's dau Frances married George How ANDREWS Dec Qtr 1845 St Pancras. Their dau Fanny Elizabeth ANDREWS (bn 1849) seems to have lived with her grandparents from age 11 to 21. In 1871, Margaret's aged 80 and Fanny 21 living at Ashford, Kent. George had died aged 84 at Hendon 1867.
Fanny married Henry Daniel TASKER at Hendon Sep Qtr 1871, and in 1881 he's a farmer with her and four children.
Hope this helps. There is a transcription error, the daughter was frances (fanny) whose daughter was also frances.
I to am descended from John & Sabina via their daughter Maria (c1821-1878) and Charles Pointing. Charles & Maria married in Radstock in 1842(On the marriage cert a witness John Elford (could possibly be either Maria's father or brother)signed with an X.

When Charles died in 1850, the Informant on the death cert was Charles' mother-in-law, Sabina Elford. On the 1851 census Maria and her children are living next door to Sabina and her daughter Hestor and William Dunford in Westfield.
Hi, I am also related to this family as they are my 4x great grandparents. John & Sabina moved down to the Radstock area of Somerset after they married at Mountfield in 1816 and I think their eldest son John was born at Vine Hall, Sussex although I cannot find a baptism for him.
John & Sabina's son Stephen was my 3 g.grandfather and was a coal miner. John was a blacksmith. I often wonder what the Somerset villagers thought when John brought a "foreign" bride home! Sabina outlived her husband and lived to her eighties. Do you know what happened to her dau. Louise?

Sabina had a daughter Louisa Jane Selmes baptised at Mountfield, Sussex on 5 April 1812.

I am related to this family through Simon's brother Stephen Selmes who was my 5 x great grandfather.
Your's I think goes down their son Isaac's line (1703 to 1793)to your 5x great Isaac (1734 to 1818) I got most of my info from "lizedwards1950" through the Ancestry site. Her ancestors were also Elfords. All the best with your searching, CML

Hi Liz,

Thank you again! I agree it looks like there is not much else we can do with Jonathan. One Ancestry public member tree has him as a son of William and Sarah but that was probably guesswork as well.

The one name study sounds interesting. I don't have much I can contribute from Melbury Osmond as there were no other Elfords in the records apart from my Mary Elford and son Samuel Elford/Childs. Interesting as the Childs family seem a lot more spread out in other parishes. I will have a look at your web page. I think we are too far removed from the Elfords to do the DNA study but it sounds fascinating! I descend from Mary Elfords son Samuel, as you know, and his daughter Judith who married Benjamin Bartlett and had one child George in 1827 (Benjamin died and Judith remarried to James Loader and the family migrated to South Australia). George Bartlett is my mum's G-G-Grandfather.
I have contact with another Elford descendant in the UK - from Samuel Elford/Childs' son Solomon, who may have an interest so I shall pass it on to him.
So the Elford line was finished way back in my tree. I'd like to learn more about them though.

Thanks again for your very kind help.

Kelly :)

You can always email me via elford@one-name.org which might get to me quicker than going through Ancestry.

I'm also doing an Elford DNA study (males only) so if you know anybody who might be interested, please let me know.

All the best, Liz Winney

Hello Liz,

Once again thank you very much, you have been so helpful. I found the same entry for Jonathan in the IGI with no parents but had hoped it was an error by the transcriber, sadly not! It would make sense for him to be a son of Jonathan and Lydia as you say, but impossible to be sure. There were several earlier Jonathans as well, one born 1696 and one 1699 both to Jonathan. Other children to Jonathan born between 1698-1702 I assumed to be of Jonathan and Lydia but I got that wrong, so perhaps siblings of Jonathan senior (he perhaps being the one born 1699?)? Anyway, some things are just a mystery!

Pity about lazy vicars and even worse those that ripped out pages for other uses or destroyed whole registers entirely!

Thanks again and kindest regards,

Kelly.

Hi Kelly,

Glad to be able to help, Jonathan looks a bit tricky. In the PR's for Yetminster/Chetnole, the only Jonathan named of the right kind of age is in 1725 to (would you believe it!) Elford and his wife!!! There were 4 or 5 Elford couples having children in the 1713 to 1733's so identification as to Jonathan's parents is difficult if not impossible, but I am of the opinion that it would be more likely to be Jonathan Snr & Lydia (Foy)if anybody, just because of the name link. Jonathan Snr of Melbury Bubb married Lydia Foy at Somerton Oct 03 1716 and had Lydia 1717, Foy 1718 & Jonathan (?) in 1725 if I'm correct, but you might need to see other parish records like Land tax or tenants records/Wills to confirm this.
The earliest name Jonathan goes back to 1694 at Chetnole when his dau Elizabeth was born according to the PR's.
Sorry I can't help more on this but with lazy vicars like that one, one can only surmise.

Liz

Hi Liz,

Thank you so much for the trouble you have gone to, much appreciated! I have only access to the Melbury Osmond parish records online (on the Dorset OPC) and the IGI on FamilySearch, so had not been able to get records for Chetnole or Yetminster other than what is in the IGI. The info helps me a lot, thank you.
Have you any idea about Jonathan? There seems to be no parents or marriage recorded for him in the IGI, obviously a lot of gaps in these records.

It seems a lot of the Childs in Melbury Osmond were related and I suspect Samuel and David were brothers but have no evidence. David's daughter Elizabeth married my Samuel Elford/Childs so I would say they were cousins.

Thanks again,

Kelly.

Hi,
I have looked at the transcripts of the parish registers for Yetminster/Chetnole (I don't have them for the Melbury villages.

I have discounted Mary bn Aug 16th 1746 (twin of Jane) to Thomas & Elizabeth , who both seem to have been buried on 14th & 21st Sept 1746.
I have also discounted the Mary bn 1744 to Foy & Mary also buried in 1745 and their 2nd dau Mary bn 1754 would have been too young.

So I am inclined towards Mary bap 20/071748 to Jonathan & Mary. This does make her rather old for Soloman born either 1793 or 1798 (IGI differs) but not impossible I suppose. There was another Solomon born to a David Childs (Samuel's brother?) so possibly there's a mistake there.
Samuel Elford/Childs was obviously born before marriage as only his mother's name is noted. He married Elizabeth Childs (a cousin?) on 05/12/1803 at Melbury Sampfold according to the BRVI.

It's handy to check the burial registers so you can cross off those who didn't survive to get married!!!

Hope this helps.
Hi Liz,

Thank you for your reply. I have Mary Elford born c1744 who married Samuel Childs 28 Jan 1775 in Melbury Osmond. (I believe she died in 1816 aged 72).Children: Samuel Elford alias Childs born 1774; Dinah 1777; Sophia 1780; Edith 1786; Judith 1790; and Solomon 1794. The entry for Samuel and Mary's marriage shows she is from Chetnole.
I have two possibilities for her parents: Mary born c1746 to Thomas and Elizabeth nee Patten who married 1743 in Yetminster; or Mary born c1748 to Jonathan and Mary. Either way this makes Mary aged 46 or 48 for the birth of youngest child Solomon! There is another Mary baptised in Folke in 1754 to Foy and Mary (Foy came from Chetnole). Not sure which way to go. Ancestry trees and IGI show Mary dau of Jonathan as marrying Samuel Childs but I'm really not sure about that.

I have tried mapping out all the Chetnole and Yetminster families to link relatives but this is proving difficult. Until I know where my Mary fits I think I'll leave it!

If you can help that would be much appreciated.

Hi Margaret, thanks for replying. I think I wrote to your cousin David Elford some years ago as I contacted most of the Elfords in this area.

I became so engrossed with the Elfords that I joined the Guild of One-Name Studies to do a one-name study of the Elford Name, and set up the Elford Family History Group 2 or 3 years ago. It costs £10 pa to join and I do a couple of newsletters a year and help other Elford researchers.

If you'd like to email me via elford@one-name.org, I can let you have more info.

Liz

Thank you Liz for the interesting info. Which line do you descend from? Coincidently, my son & family live very close to Radstock in the village of Faulkland,& a second cousin called david Elford lives in Trowbridge. there are an awful lot of us! I would be interested to know more about the Elford family group which you have set up. Do you know about the Artist, Victor Elford? He was my mother's first cousin, & his niece has compiled a dossier of most of his work. Margaret

Hi,

Thanks for your message and snap - my mother was an Elford too, although her family came from Radstock, nr Bath. I am aware of your family tree via the late Laura Elford's records which I am slowly indexing down at the Plymouth & W.Devon RO.

I don't think though, she proved that the Black Prince gave the Sheepstor land to an Elford, just thought it might have been - the records are very hazy that far back.

Liz

Iam researching the "Pyne" family and my mother's maiden name was Elford. She was born in Exeter Devon, & her Father was a Police Inspector there. His parents were James Weeks Elford & Margaret Fice. Laura Elford was the wife of one of my mother's cousins & did a comprehensive Elford family tree dating back to when the Black Prince gave land to an Elford in West Devon (around Yelverton ie:Ye Elford Town)cmlister2

Re: Edmund Elford Born c.1813 Dorchester, Dorset.

Hi Tony,

from the records in my possession, Edmund was born in Dorchester on 4/5/1812 bapt 2/8/1812 son of Lionel Elford and Ann Freak. (dorchester bapts 1772-1837). Lionel & Ann's first son was called James Harvey, which ties in with the Hastings line.(they had at least 6 children). Edmund married Maria Blake at Ringwood 9/4/1832.
Lionel & Ann married 1808 in Dorchester and I have a copy of a Settlement Certificate for Lionel (aged 51) dated 1829 stating he was born at Winterbourne Whitchurch, Dorset & he was 8 when his father died. This makes his birth around 1778 so he appears to be son of a Joseph Elford & Jane Hawkins who married at Milton Abbey 24/4/1771 (IGI). Joseph I think is son of William Elford and Ann ? which is as far as I've got.Email me direct if you like on "elford@one-name.org"
Liz
