My dad has always told me that we were related to Elias Howe, even before the Internet and the answer to who invented the sewing machine was just a Google search away. I would tell my friends that Elias Howe invented the sewing machine, they all laughed and said it was Singer. When we went on our class trip to Washington DC there was the proof I think it was the museum of American History, but they had the sewing machine that Elias had invented. My dad had papers with everything including a coat of arms from England. I am told there were Howes that came over on the mayflower and some owned land very early in American History. I live in MN, but I'm told our lineage traces to Boston and then further back to England. Does any one know 'how' I fit in to the tree? Where is everybody from? Does anybody else have any papers, my dad has lost his.

Thanks,
Josh Howe
St. Paul, Mn

Hi Tom:
I know it is nine years since you posted this request on the Elias family-- Gustavus Gottleib Elias. I'm Barbara's cousin Richard Elias-- and my sister Diane and I have "really gotten into" geneology-- I know you had done extensive work back in the 1990's. --I found out that Gustavus actually was from Ludwigsburg in Wurtembour--just outside of Stuttgart. A brother Karl followed him to Lancaster around 1850 -- both Gustavus and Karl had close contact with Christian Elias who was already in Lancaster in the 1840's-- Gustavus was godfather to his son. I also found the origins of the Getz family-- a farm off the Marietta Pike east of Lancaster- that a John Peter Getz of Von Kerstenberg-- who bought land in the 1740's from the Penn family.
I also have done alot for the Mourer family- Susan Alice Mourer--Peter Chritian's wife.-- her family lived in in the Lancaster area for many generations-- her family his buried near the Elias' in Lancaster.
I also just got back from England (Broxbourne and Cheshunt)(and visited with a 4th cousin once removed-- Janet Plastow Pearson-- and her husband John-- who are local historians and genologists-- they showed me the sites connected with both the Plastow and the Buckingham familly(Mary Ann Buckingham) --her mother was Mary Ann Ballard-- thus this is where that name comes from. Both the Plastow, Buckingham and the Bilton family-- have pretty extensive family trees-
If you happen to get this-- e-mail me back-- I have been enjoying me retirement-- and my addictive hobby of genology!
Regards
Cousin Richard.

I was looking at web pages about Elias Howe partially because some years back I heard that one of my relatives did some ancestry and had said we were decendants of EH. My father name was Roy Walter Howe his father was Walter Roy Howe. We have pretty much been in Minnesota for as long as I know. Many years back my grandfather had a fairly large sawmill up around the Iron Range of MN that after the second fire pretty much broke them. After that they moved to California where he was killed in a logging accident. Never knew him. If any know of any ancestry that moved to MN it would be appreciated. Terry

I don't know much about his history because I am only 12, but i can tell you that my great grandmother is Elizabeth Howe and she had 2 siblings; Donald Howe and Nancy Howe. She also had a brother named Malcolm Howe who died at age 13. Elizabeth Howe married a man named Roger Lincoln and had 6 children. Donald also married and had 6 children and Nancy had one daughter named Penny who passed a couple weeks ago. As for Elizabeths children her oldest was was Peter Lincoln who married Connie Cassanari when he was 21 and Daniel and Jennifer. Daniel had 2 children named Alicia and Nicholas, and Jennifer married Robert Gibson and had three children; Hannah, Myself, and my brother Elias; who was named after his ancestor: Elias Howe.

Hi: Yes Elias Elias born to parents Ann Lloyd and Thomas Elias 1799. I believe he was born in (near) Cwm Cou or Cenarth. The family attended the Parish Church in Cenarth.
I visited there last Sept 2009 and found his brother's grave stone (John Elias) and Thomas as well. I believe it was Ann Lloyd Elias that was from Mount, and they lived in St. Dogmels after marriage. Would you please email me through my private email as I am ending Ancestry today for a bit. We are vacationing in September and I will not be home. Thank you for the info, I would like to keep in touch. Regards, Shawn spresner@verizon.net (Southampton, PA USA)

I am the Great-Nephew of the Former President of Mexico "Plutario Elias de Calles". My family comes from Northern Mexico and we live in Los Angeles and Orange Counties of California. I have limited information (hear-say), on my ancestors, but we have been told that the name, Elias, comes from Southern Spain, Northern Africa. My Great-Grandfather was Manuel (lived in Tia Juana). Jose was my Grandfather, and My father Edward B. both were born in Los Angeles and were twins. We are part of the Williams Clan, Paternal Grandmother, Native California Americans from the "San Luis de Rey" Tribe of Northern San Diego County. Also, we are related to the original settlers of the City of Los Angeles, the Carriosas.

Re: Elias Howe's Children

SAY cuzzes !

Jeannie was right! Oral tradition has it, Singer stole the patent.(age old story) The truth is the truth. (patents verify it)and can be proven to this day. The original patent box belonging to Elias is in a glass case at the Smithsonian with Eli Whitneys' cotton gin. I was a late child, but Elias was my mother's great uncle, making him my great, great uncle. My great grandmother a Howe. My grandmother a Winkler.
Elias was credited with the invention of the bobbin(added a circle) and then put the eye at the point of the needle which made an automatic sewing machine possible for the first time. I know my paternal grandfather a "Rough Rider" married the daughter of Elias sister. He became "secret service" for Theodore Roosevelt. As a result of war, much of the history of this family has been shrouded, but it is safe to say, war took its toll on the Howe family, for just as when Elias was away they stole his patents, while my grandfather was away for 7 years with Rough Riders, the daughter of Howe's sister suffered greatly at the hands of locals. The "keys to heaven" were handed down in this family and oral tradition has many beautiful stories as well as tragedies. Not to worry, nothing is going to be alright anyway. Go ahead ! Make me say Uncle.

God Bless the Howes

Eaglefliesover@aol.com

Family history on Elias Howe is difficult to say the least. I am the grand daughter of his youngest child, Mertie Howe..who married a Hill. Her son Billy G. Hill was my father....There are Howie's in Belmont N.C. a town N. of Charlotte N.C. Mertie had a son David that was still alive three years ago...and G.C...he was always called Gip..no idea why. I do know that Singer stold his sewing machine plans..and eventually ended up paying back millions. Elias invested the money in the union army. He was the only Union Army person in my family..What I wish is that I had paid attention when my family told me about my Great Grandfather..course what kids do you know that actually pay attention to you...mine don't. There has to be alot of family out there..finding them is difficult...jeanie
