Hello, I am descended from Prudence (Samuel Elks' wife) and her first husband Obadiah Moore. I have been researching this Elks family in hopes of identifying Prudence's date of death. In my research, I have Nancy Ann's birth date as 1778, not 1788. I know that Mrs. Elks was deceased when Samuel died in 1830, but I don't have an estimated date of death. I have copies of early court records from Princess Ann County, VA where Samuel Elks requested payments for his wife from her deceased husband, Obadiah Moore's estate. Other Moore family researchers believe that Mrs. Moore's name was Prudence (Penina) Willoughby based on the fact that the name Penina was carried through the Moore family.

There is a good chance that it just may well be him.
I am a collector of WW2 memorabilia - not for profit, just a history buff - and a week or so before I did the original posting, I obtained a large packet of photos from WW2, almost all of the subjects being Navy personnel.
Where did your father serve?
Is there an email address at which I can provide additional details?
I have been able to provide photos - no charge, I just mail them off with a cover note- to 2 surviving sailors, and two family survivors of the subjects of the photos. I have received wonderful notes from all indicating how nice it is to have a photo from the 40's of themselves or their father all of whom did not recall the photos existed, or had long forgotten about them.
If the man in the photo is your father, the picture is yours.

This sounds like it might be my father, Doug Elks. He was in the navy and some of the folks there called him "Shorty." Dad was from Grimesland, North Carolina, about 5'6", had dark hair and eyes. Does this sound like him?

Elks Family in North Carolina - New Website

Hey folks.

I have created a new website called East Carolina roots.

http://www.eastcarolinaroots.com

As many of you know, the Elks family is VERY strong in eastern North Carolina -- has been since the 1700s and still is to this day.

If you descend from the North Carolina Elks, or if you think you might, you should visit the site, submit a tree (GEDCOM file) if you have one, and join the forum so you can meet up with other Elks researchers.

Again, the site is very new, so the search engine isn't picking up everything on the site yet, and the forum just opened yesterday, so you will be embarking on brand new territory!

In addition to all of this, there is also an EastCarolinaRoots DNA project that I head up and I'm hoping to get Elks descendants (male, Elks surname) to join in this project because I descend from some Elks lines and would love to see how the results come out and if we can match certain branches with certain lines.

Thanks in advance!

Sara

I am from Hickman,KY. I am the grand daughter of the late Ellihue and Coriene Elks. The had 14 children. Some died at an early age and there is about 11 that survived. The children they had are:

Robert Cleve Elks ( my father)
Otis O'neal Elks ( passed away in 89)
Elenor Elks
Jane Elks
Peal Elks
Joyce Elks
Francis Elks
Danny Elks
John David Elks
Donna Elks
Jimmy Elks
I am sure I am forgetting someone but this may be a connection. I have known some of my grandmother's background. But the Elks side has always been a mystery as to where they have came from

I have found John W. & Mary J. Elks living in Hickman KY. They appear in the KY 1910 Miracode index, 1900 Fed. Census, 1880 Fed. Census. In the 1900 they say they were married for 36yrs., Mary J was the mother of 13 children 8 surviving. The children in all the census are: William C. born 1861 TN
Minerva born 1865 TN
James born 1868 TN
Gustavious 1871 TN
Sallie 1874 KY
Andrew 1875 KY
Bell 1878 KY
Nora 1880 KY
John Oct 1881 KY
Otis June 1884 KY
Asy June 1889 KY
In the 1910 index Bert Pollock their son-in-law 22 from Missouri, grandson Thomas H Pollock Missouri, daughter Nora S. 32 were living with them in Hickman on Combs Spring Rd.

I'm trying to figure something out.

From what I gather, I am descended from Nasby Mills and Nancy Ann Elks. They were my 6th Great Grandparents.

The information I have on Nancy's father, Samuel, was that he was married to Prudence (Willoughby?), who was the widow of Obadiah Moore.

Here's the dilemma.

Nancy wasn't born until about 1788.

All the information I have says that Prudence was born about 1735... that would indicate that she was 53 when she had Nancy.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but it does seem unlikely.

Does anyone have a year of death for Prudence or any further information on this?

I am doing my husband's line, and his grandmother was Bertha Elks, daughter of Samuel Hatton Elks b.1861, d. 1890, and Susan (Sudie) Hale. He died in Sumner or Robertson County, TN., but we don't know where he came from before that. I can't get anything on him.

I'm related to the Obediah Moore that Samuel Elks was guardian of. I read the will abstract in the Princess Anne County Minute Book (Mircofilm) at the VA regional library. I haven't seen where Samuel was a Dr. and copies of other court records (deeds, etc) he has signed with an X. Send me your e-mail address and I'll send you copies of records that I found on the family as I searched for my ancestors.

Thank you for responding. I had most of the information that you mentioned except for the Samuel Elks being awarded guardianship. I ran across a few more Elks names that had names (not an Elks) listed under them. Where did you find the info. on Samuel Elks. I read, but could not access more info, that Samuel Elks was a Dr. Is this true? Are you related to an Elks?
Cheryl Roberts CherylLR@aol.com

I have Samuel Elks in Princess Anne County VA in 1764 being awarded guardianshp of Obediah and James Moore (Princess Anne Co. Minutes 7, 1753-1764). Then we find the Samuel Elks family in the 1790 census of Pitt Co. NC. Samuel Elks' will mentions his son Jacob (pg 210 Rough Notes from Pitt County Deedbooks GG (1830). Donna Stroud (on Rootsweb) lists Jacob Elks birth as 1770 in Pitt Co NC. From census records we find 1783 ELKS SOLOMON Princess Ann County VA 060 Blackwell Precinct Tax list VA Early Census Index VAS1a995860. In the Princess Anne Co. Minutes 7, 1753-1762, 213 we find John Elks being apprenticed to Obedient Moore in 1756 at age 15 to learn the trade of Cooper. We also find Solomon Elks apprenticed to Thomas Turton in 1756 to learn the trade of carpenter and again to John Ackiss in 1760 (Princess Anne Co. Minutes 7, 1753-1762, 373) to learn the trade of shoemaker. John Elks is referenced in several other early VA court records in Princess Anne County and/or the Lower Norfolk . Hope this helps.
