I have been working on the Ellerbee Family History for a few years now. You can see my info at www.aellerbee.tribalpages.com and we also have a myspace - www.myspace.com/ellerbee_tree. You can email me using either place or at ellerbeetree@bellsouth.net.

Patricia,

I remember Aunt Martha Jane very well. We are double cousins because William Henry Pitts was my grandfathers brother. My grandparents were Lovie Iris Pitts and Charles (McKinnon)C. L. Pitts. Sounds like Ben Eble is another cousin in this group.
All I know about Minerva Grant is when they were married and where they lived.
Yes, I've heard the storys about Sandlin killing his father in law and apparently it is true.
The storys vary alittle.
The Indian blood is talked about in our family too. We were susposed to have gotten it from the Pitts and the Ellerbees but we have not found any proof. Maybe someone in the family will have a DNA test.

Hello, I was in touch with one of Sandlin Ellerbee´s descendents. Her name is Alice. And, she can be reached at AWBlyler@aol.com. I was told that there was a dispute, I believe between Sandlin, and his father in law, about a horse drinking out of a barrel of water, which was intended for people. This led to the gun incident. Also, I had spoken with Walter Pitts a few years ago. I think he passed away. He had a picture of Sandlin, who was a Civil War veteran, in his living room. He still remembered Sandlin from his boyhood days in the early 1900´s. Walter was, I believe a quarter cherokee, but from the Pitts side of the family. I have heard that Sandlin´s mother, Martha Love Ellerbee, was a Cherokee indian. But, I have not been able to verify this. Alice could put you in contact with more of the family.
Phyllis,

Sandlin and Mary Jane's oldest daughter, Martha Jane was my grandmother. She married William Henry PITTS. After Mary Jane's death, Sandlin married a Minerva Grant. Do you have any info on that marriage? Also, do you know anything about Sandlin and Mary Jane's father (Benjamin Franklin GRANTHAM) getting into an argument and Benjamin getting killed? I have not been able to find any death info on Benjamin.

Regarding the indian blood - my mom always told us we either a quarter or eighth cherokee. I have not been able to find any proof.

Sandlin Ellerbee never lived in Jacksonville, Fl. that I know of. His daughter Ada did. Sandlin lived in Ga. then the Mariana, Fl. area later Washington Co., Fl., ( Parker and Econfina). His daughter Lovie Iris, (Ada's sister) was my grandmother. Sandlin is buried at Econfina and Mary Jane Grantham Ellerbee is buried at Parker. We've never found any Indian blood. If its there it is most likely Cherokee or Creek. Phyllis

Hello Jack. My direct email is juichiung@aol.com. I also am descended from Sandlin Ellerbee. His daughter Ada married Alexander McCallum. I had been trying to track down some story of indian blood in the family. If it is there it is pretty far back. I have heard that Sandlin's mother, Martha Love was a Cherokee indian. But, I only got that story from one person. And, it would put me at 1/64th indian.

Ellerbee's in Florida

Hi,

I am wondering if there are any Ellerbee's in Florida or anywhere else that could be related to me. My great grandmother was an Ellerbee. Her name was Pauline "Polly" Ellerbee. She had a brother Rubin and a sister named Ruby. Polly was born Jan. 24, 1895 in Hillsborough county I believe. She died on Jul. 1, 1973 in Tampa. She married Rogello "Roy" Hernandez on March 29. 1919. She had 9 children. Her parents names were Mary McDonald and William "Bud" Ellerbee. I am sorry to say this is all I know of the Ellerbee side of my family. I do know there are some cousins but I don't know who and where. If anyone has any info please contact me at dingbat@tampabay.rr.com Thank you.

Bekah

Gail, I have an old Ellerbe family history book. It has a copyright of 1986.
From what I can find, your Grandfather,Robert M. Was born to William Marion,in 1905.
They were desended from a John Ellerbe {1808-1885}.It says the census of 1860 shows they moved to Hillsborough County Fla.
Had 15 children and a set of twins.
Tells that he kept a trunk of confederate money long after the war. Was a very stern man. He sounds so much like my gr-gr-grand.
You may know all of this. let me know if you need any more. I can tell you what I find a least.
It is fun writing you. I feel as if we have something in common. For one thing, my Grand Father was John Ellerbe {1870-1947}.
Hope this helps some.
Myrtle

The last two names I don't
how they are related but they are buried in the same plot as my dad in Rose Hill cemetary in Tampa FL. As for the Indian part I was told that we were Seminole Indian
and that we were related to Sam Houston that
had children by an Indian Maiden. Can't find any information that confirms the last statement. Brenda
My mother's family is descended from an Ellerbee and a McCallum, who lived in Florida during the latter part of the 1800's. There is a story in the family that the original McCallum's son married a seminole indian woman after the civil war. In searching the records, I have run across the name Ellerbee. Do you know if there could be any indian blood in the Ellerbee line?

Ellerbees - Seminoles
Dear Gail,

Thank you for replying. Here is the Ellerbee in my family. Ada Alvina Ellerbee (1876-1966) married Alex Alexander McCallum (1863-1951). They had 10 children. I have e-mailed some of their grandchildren. They were from the Jacksonville Florida area. To this day, many of their descendants are in the Florida area. One is Alice Byler at AWBlyler@aol.com. She is aware of the Ellerbee side of the family. Do you think that we may be related? Do you know of an Ada Alvina Ellerbee? Also, many people in my mother's family look similar to Mexicans. My mother has very straight thick black hair, brown eyes, and olive skin. My younger brother is darker than many Mexicans. One of my sisters has the high "indian cheekbones". My other sister and myself have blond hair and blue eyes. But, I have skin that becomes unusually dark. On visits to Mexico people assume that my mother and brother are Mexicans. I am pretty sure that there is some truth to the tales of Seminole blood in the family, but it has been difficult ascertaining the truth. Have you heard anything about intermarriages with Seminoles? Thanks for writing.
Ben Eble

Ellerbees in Florida
Thanks for writing back. We have only been to Florida on vacation. My mother lives in San Antonio,TX which is relatively close to the border.
Actually, my mother and brother have olive colored skin, which tans very easily. My brother does not burn. He turns brown. I used to study physical anthropology, so I had an idea that there is some intermixture in the family. But, it wasn't until the last ten years that I heard the stories about indian blood in the family.
My grandfather had told my stepfather that we were part Seminole. My aunt heard that after the Civil War, one of our ancestors fled the Carolinas with his son. Later, some missionaries introduced his son to a Seminole woman convert. Later, they had offspring, who were of the Jacksonville, FL area. This may be the McCallum-Ellerbee marriage.
Well, I will probably give Dorothy Salter (daughter of Ada Alvina Ellerbee) a call. Once again thanks for writing. If I get anymore Ellerbee information, I will be sure to post it.

Ben Eble

Mary Jane Grantham and Sandlin Ellerbee

Dear Gail,
I believe that I am descended from the Granthams, and then the Ellerbees. My great grandmother was Ada Ellerbee. Her father was Sandlin Ellerbee. He was married to Mary Jane GRANTHAM (born 1853). Mary Jane Grantham was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Grantham, and Mary Ann Weldon. Please write back. I have quite a bit of Grantham lineage back to 1817(?)
