Father of James Ellis of Nicholas Co., KY?

Who was the father of James Ellis of Nicholas Co., KY?

I have found two men named James Ellis on the Washington Co, PA census in the early 1780s. On the same page is an Abram Inlow (Enlow). This is of interest because I know that James Ellis and his wife Mary Peyton lived near Jesse Enlow in Nicholas Co, KY at least after 1800.

I have reason to believe that Mary Peyton's father William Peyton and brother Stephen Peyton lived in Westmoreland Co, PA in the 1780s before coming to Nicholas Co., KY with the Ellises and Enlows. Does anyone have information that would confirm or refute this idea?

Thanks for your help.
Kristin Yates

Hi Fearghal,

Thanks for your message. This is Les' son Chris. We went over to Donegal back in 2005 and took photos of all the family graves we could find in the cemetery. We also discovered how our families are connected (my 2x great grandfather James was your wife's great grandfather Pat's brother). However we didn't think to ask about my great grandmother's family and where they are buried. Have you noticed any Ellis family buried in Murlog or other cemeteries in the Lifford and Strabane areas?

Kind regards,
Chris

Minnie Dietrich Ellis was my mothers aunt. In 1949 we visited Minnie when I was 17 years old. She was very artistic and her house showed evidence of it. Her mother was my great grandmother. I have a large picture of her. Many of her descendants live in North Dakota. They are descendants from her first husband Frederick Garbe. They lived in Germany and had five sons together. After Garbes death she remarried and had two more sons and two daughters. They emigrated to the United States. I also would like to get connected with Minnie's children and Grandchildren. Gladys Blume

Ellis - Russia - Philadelphia

My great-grandfather, Samuel Ellis, was born in Teplick (that is what his World War I registration card says), Podolsky, Moscow, Russia on May 15, 1891 or 1892. He was Jewish. According to a passport application from 1920-1921, his father was named Solomon Ellis. Solomon Ellis lived his entire life in Russia and died there sometime in/before 1920-1921, as the passport application said that Solomon was deceased. He was married to Elsie Leibowitz, who was born in Philadelphia, who was around 4 years his junior. Their children were Solomon (born around 1925), Rita (born in 1926), and Justin (born around 1929). As per the Jewish custom, the latter Solomon was named after his deceased grandfather. I am not sure who Rita and Justin were named after; possibly Samuel Ellis's relatives? If anyone has any information about Russian Ellises from this area, I would greatly appreciate it. Either reply to this thread here on ancestry.com or email me at chrysaorasterion@gmail.com.

I am looking for information (documentation) that Sara Riggs is the daugter of Edward Riggs. DAR accepts that James Ellis fought in the Revolution and that Sarah Riggs was his wife. Do you have any documentation regarding Edward Riggs being the Bondsman for the marriage of his granddaughter Mahulda Ellis to John Neece on May 31, 1800 in Jefferson Co, TN.

They m. 10.20.1803 in Person Co., NC. Then...? Stephen Ellises appear decades later, in GA and TN. So do wives, then widows, named "Elizabeth." BUT: A Stephen Ellis (same?) m. Elizabeth Bagwell 12.31.1804 Wake Co. NC. Which Elizabeth is in Wilson Co. TN in 1860 Census, age 77 born NC, "gatekeeper"? Rimmer family are about to erect a granite marker in NC that will have "Stephen m. Elizabeth Rimmer 1803" inscribed. We hope to add their b., d. dates/places, and NR. OF CHILDREN. WHO and how many children did that marriage produce? I wonder if Elizabeth Rimmer died soon after 1803 marriage? There seems to be another(?) 1780s STEPHEN who left NC for GA, m. REBECCA(?). Another(?) went to McNairy or Wilson Co., TN? You who descend ELLIS may make sense of this. If you can shed light -- THANKS much!

I am guessing that Eleanor's father was Elijah Ellis or possibly John Ellis of Prince George's County. Have you any further information on Elijah since this last posting? Thanks.

Norman W. Ellis Born Grant County, Wisconsin; Civil War 90th New York Regiment

The Seattle Daily Times Sunday Morning, January 28, 1923
Page 12, Column 2
Bothell Mail Carrier Is Whole Membership of G.A.R. Post
A one man Grand Army Post! Such is the status of the John Bothell Post of the G.A.R. [Grand Army of the Republic] in which Norman W. Ellis is the sole surviving member.

Commander, Chaplain, Color-Bearer, Chief Factotum and general utility man for the post is this 75 year old Civil War veteran. In fact, he has the unique distinction of holding all the offices in the post, for he is the post.

Other members may have been honored by election to every office in their posts at various times, but probably no one of them has ever held all the positions at the same time as Mr. Ellis is now doing. Probably, too, Mr. Ellis is the only Grand Army veteran who ever found election to office such a simple matter. Electioneering, campaigning and all other semblance of political smoke is unknown in John Bothell Post. Such difficulties are solved without the use of red tape or other office machinery when the Commander casts a unanimous ballot which elects him to every office in the post.

Fifteen Members Once
Twenty-five years ago when Bothell was young and its Grand Army Post was in its infancy, there were fifteen Civil War veterans who gathered at the meetings to talk over the days before the war and even more often the stirring scenes they had witnessed during the War of Rebellion. Those hardy veterans who were still in their prime fought over again and again, the Battles of Lookout Mountain, Bull Run, Gettysburg, Shiloh and Corinth, who rehearsed for interested audiences the exciting details of Sherman’s march to the sea or Grant’s Wilderness campaign.

But a quarter of a century is a long span of years and each succeeding season has taken its toll of that band of war heroes until today Norman W. Ellis is the lone surviving member.

Like the “last leaf upon the tree,” he has lived to see his old comrades vanish one by one until he has been left alone to tell of those bygone days. But, unlike that famous character of Holmes who “tottered, weak and wan,” Comrade Ellis is hale and hearty in spite of his 75 years and true to his colors, he is still in the service of Uncle Sam.

Now Is Mail Carrier
For the last eight years he has been in the employ of the Postal Department and he is a familiar figure in the streets of Bothell as he carries the mail to and from the station each day.

Mr. Ellis was born in Grant County, Wisconsin and when he was only 15 the Civil War broke out. Less than a year later he enlisted in the 90th New York Regiment at Sherman, New York and served until the end of the war. He was in the Battle of Winchester and Cedar Creek and one of his most cherished memories is the picture of Sheridan, arriving after his famous ride, to spur that handful of discouraged men on to a victory.

Comrade Ellis has lived in Bothell almost as long as there has been a Grand Army organization there and now, when the roll call of John Bothell Post is sounded, he alone is left to answer for that group of valiant comrades.

Ellis family from London, England

Hi I'm looking for any information on the Ellis family from London, England. If my tree is correct then I have got back to Philip Ellis b 1806 in Devonport, Devon, m Hannah Abrahams 1823 in London, but can't find any other information. I would be grateful for any information.
