Hi. William Ellwood and Elizabeth (nee Cheers) were my wife's great great grandparents. She is descended from their son Oliver. I would be interested to see a photo of the inscription (email g.roberts119 "at" btinternet.com)

William was Vicar of Hargrave for nearly 60 years. By coincidence we have just returned today from a family funeral there...descendants of William still live in the Hargrave/Huxley area. My wife's cousin remarked that she often reads messages in the church's visitors book saying that they a relatives visiting William's grave in the churchyard and they are from people she has never heard of...a large and dispersed set of descendants.

I cannot think of a family connection with Shropshire, and the names you mention do not ring a bell. I will check my notes and get back if I can find a link.

Guy Roberts

I'd love a copy of the photograph please! I've just been looking at Elizabeth Ann Ellwood, who is distantly connected by marriage to one of 'my' family. She was born in Hargrave about 1830, the daughter of William & Mary.
I have a photograph of an inscription found inside An Illustration of the Old Scriptures. Unfortunately ancestry won't seem to upload it but it reads:

William Ellwood born 3rd November 1797
Elizabeth Ellwood born March 4th 1805
The children of the above
Baptised at Kendal
Hargrave

There are no entries for any children and I believe William was vicar at Hargrave?.

I have no idea how the book has come to our family but would be interested to hear from anyone about Shropshire connections and names Soffe, Jackson, Oakley, Davies. It is likely to have comne into our family possession around the turn of the century 1900's.

Photograph can be supplied on request. I'll try again in due course to upload but it wouldn't yesterday and won't today!

We don't seem to have a record of Oliver's first wife, so would be interested to learn more, and sort out which children belonged to which wife! We have the second wife as Ellen Parker - is that correct? And their son Oliver Ellwood seems to have belonged to the first wife.

We are interested in the Ellwood family of Westmorland, and two successive generations of Ellwoods married Waistells, and so Waistell was used as a middle name for quite a number of their descendants. John Ellwood married Ann Waistell at Brough under Stainmore in 1798, and their son John Brunskill Ellwood married Isabella Waistell in the same place in 1824.

We have details of some descendants, but not all, and are looking for more. If you are interested please e-mail me at shayes@dunelm.org.uk

I am a granddaughter of Harry F. Ellwood. After the death of my grandmother, Lillian Burgess, I had little contact with my grandfather, except when my mother, (Willis) Jane Ellwood Johnson, my sister, Barbara Johnson, and I would visit him at his new home on the edge of the Bloomfield Hills, MI, golf course. Previously, he and my grandmother had lived in Birmingham, MI. He remarried a woman, whose name escapes me for the moment, whom I last remember visiting at or near Lake Worth, Florida between 1950-1952, when I was still in grade school. Due to the divorce of my own parents, moving a lot, and a generally poor memory, very little family information remains with me. And any other sources of information, such as my mother, her sister and my older sister are now all deceased. However, if you have received any more helpful information, I also would be interested.
I also have owned a large Zara Ellwood original water color named "Poppy" for over 30 years. Was given to me by a customer of mine as a gift, he had no use for the picture. He received the picture as a tip from a lady in Brooklyn, NY who had no money to tip him and wanted to show her appreciation for a favor he extended to her. I loved it the first time I saw it, pink & mauve Poppys set in a soft blue vase set on a table. Someone wrote on the back "Poppy an original water color by Zara Ellwood" I have no desire to part with it, hope to keep it in the family. Interesting to know you also have Poppy paintings of hers. Thanks for your post.

Bunny-
This is my friends response but will check more when he get's home..

I haven't heard of Zara Ellwood but I'll have to check when I get home; there are a lot of Ellwoods from Pennsylvania and also Connecticut that may be related from before the emigration to America, but I don't have any connection information for these branch ties prior to Richard Ellwood b. abt 1728 who came over from England about 1748. Richards' wife is "unknown", but they had 2 girls, and 4 boys (two sets of twins) in NY including the Benjamin you mention before he died in 1754.

The rumor for the last few hundred years is that the Ellwoods are decended from the "family" of Thomas Ellwood the Quaker b. 1639 d. 1713; a friend of William Penn, and also of John Milton the English poet ("Paradise Lost"). Thomas was married to a Mary Ellis, but they had no children as far as anyone can tell. Nor does he mention children in his auto-biography. Some researches befieve that the tie may be to the lineage of Thomas's brother Walter, but there is little known of his vitals. Another part of the rumor is that Richard's father was called Sir Frederich Ellwood, but there is even less known of him if he even exited at all.

No ancestry has been found for Elizabeth Coin (or Coyne) at all. Jacob David was one of their sons and his wives were Elizabeth Newcomb (again no ancestry known) and 2nd wife Wealthy Draper. Each wife bore several children

Hi Dannelle,
I am hoping that Zara Ellwood is related. Is Benjamin one of the Ellwoods from England, whose family emigrated from England in the 1800's?

Ellwood's in St Stephen Hertfordshire

I am in search of any living descendant's of Edward Ellwood brn: (1795) married to Abigail How brn: (1796). Their children were; Hannah brn: (1824), Joseph brn: (1828), James brn: (1830), Charlotte brn: (1834), Abraham brn: (1840) and John brn: (1838). John was the father of George Alexander Ellwood. My Great-great Grandfather was George Alexander Ellwood brn: 28 Dec 1862. He married Eliza Crow brn: 9 May 1859 from Canterbury, Kent, England. George and Eliza died in Rutland, Vermont, USA.
George's siblings were; John Edward (1860), Annie (1862), Emma Sarah (1866), Lucy Ellen (1870), and Joseph Noel (1873).
On 21 July 2009-31 July, I will be visiting the Hertfordshire area with my mother Beverly Jean Ellwood-Blanchard (1929), George's 80 year old granddaughter. We will be visiting ancestral churches and in hopes of meeting living relatives. Beverly's lifelong dream has been to travel to England in search of relatives and I am finally able to offer this to her.
If anyone has any information that would help locate any descendants of the above relatives please forward the information to me on Ancestry.com or by email at (spfx4film@aol.com).
Sincere thanks
Joel P.
Searching for father of Joseph Francis Ellwood

I'm searching for the father of Joseph Francis Ellwood, born 12 July 1878 in Fort Wayne, IN. His mother's maiden name is Ella H. Crist, born abt 1860 in Pennsylvania. I cannot seem to locate any marriage records for Ella, despite having her maiden name available. Also, this family does not seem to be showing up on the 1880 census, when Joseph would have been 2 years old. The 1900 census records do show that Joseph's father was born in Indiana and I estimate that he would be close to Ella's age. Ella is widowed in 1900. I estimate the father's birth year to be about 1858.

We have no Mc Raes anywhere in the family. I know very little about Ira Sturdevant. He was referred to as Uncle Ira, and made this wlanut desk. That is all I know. 1809 is a likely birth date -- that would put him in his 50's or so when James got married. I've always had the impression that he was a courtesy uncle, not a real one.

Are you speaking of Ira Sturdevant, b. 1809? Ira was the son of Paul Sturdevant, and we have come to believe that Hannah/Susannah/Sannie/Fanny was the d/o Paul Sturdevant. So they would have been siblings.

Back in 1957 in Detroit, our family doctor, Dr. Donald Hugh McRae, grandson of Jacob Sturdevant, s/o Paul, told me that our BROWN family was related to his own line. How? I've tried to discover that for 50 years. Unbelievable, but true. I now think we are connected through the SALES family. Descendants of Malcolm Cameron & Emily Brown are kin to me.

More later,

Do you recognize MC RAE?

We are obviously related. My Joseph's son, James, married Mary Eliza Cameron, daughter of Ewan Cameron and Bridget Higgins. I was always told that the Camerons felt Ewan had married beneath him, as Bridget was an Irish serving girl he met on the boat over. Have you heard that? Do you know Michael Kahn, out in British Columbia? He has done a lot of work on the Cameron connection.

I live in London Ontario now, but grew up in Mandaumin Ontario, near Sarnia. James left Wilkesport about 1905 and moved first to Wanstead, then to Mandaumin with his sons, one of whom, another Joseph, was my grandfather.

How is Hannah Sturdevant related to Ira? I have a walnut desk that he made as a wedding present for James and Mary Eliza.

Aren't families fun!!

Malcolm Cameron, s/o Ewen Cameron & Bridget Higgins, married Emily Brown. Emily Brown was the d/o Henry Brown and Lucy Ann Sales, my gg grandparents. Emily & Malcolm left the Wilkesport, Ont. area and moved to Lorain Co., Ohio. After Henry died in 1903, Lucy moved to Lorain,Ohio & lived with Emily & Malcolm, where they three died.

I am interested in the Ellwood-Witherell line because I think they are connected in some way with the Sales family. Lucy Ann Sales was the d/o Hamlet Sales. This Ellwood-Witherell line descends from Charles Witherell & Susannah/Fanny/Hannah Sturdevant.

As for Joseph Ellwood: I'm sorry I know only what others have written, and now I find myself tracking the Ellwoods. Good grief! You mentioned Ontario. Where are you? I live in Michigan now, but born at Chatham, Ont.

Looking forward to your response.
