S.E.Elmendorf, PA>CA, Died /1850

Murder at Hawkins Bar- The Picayune of las evening, learns that Mr. Todd of Todd and Bryans Express, the following particulars of manslaughter at the above named place:
The wife of a man names Simmons from Arkansas, residing at the above named place, was annoyed by the repeated insulting advances and even threats of violence upon her person by another man of the name of S. E.Elmendorff, formerly of Pennsylvania, of which Mrs. Simmons informed her husband, who gave notice to Elmendorff, if he persisted in coming about the premises, he would shoot him. Nothing intimidated by this warning, Elmendorff persevered, and at last taunted Simmons in his own house with his not fulfilling his threat. Upon this, Simmmons immediatly shot him with a pistol, causing his death in about 30 minutes. Considerable excitement ensued. The friends of Elmendorff insisted upon hanging Simmons without a trial, but thru the interference of others, he was released from their hands, received a legal tribunal and was held in custody to await his trial in Sonora.

Daily Alta California, Volume 1, Number 216, 4 September 1850

Rachel Permelia Elmendorf was born in New York 11 May 1836 *1836-1919). She married Hiram Hebard and they lived in Wisconsin. I am a descendant of that line. I think her parents are John Felten Elmendorf (1792-1886)and Elizabeth Youmans (1793 - 1850)
I just put a photo of Rachel and Hiram Hebard and some of her kids on my Hebard Tree 2009. I know she had red hair, and worked in a big inn in New York.
Can anyone provide further clarification about Rachel's parents? Thanks!

I was hoping you would have said NY or Ill.. I have an elusive grandparent also with no known parents. His name was Edward Elmendorf born ca. 1855 in either NY or Ill depending on which census you are looking at. I have only found him on two, 1880 & 1900. He was a convicted bigamist having married my gr gr grandmother ca. 1879 (in Claion Co. Pa.) while still married to another woman. They did produce my gr grandmother before he was caught. I found out the information by accident, but it did explain why nobody knew much about him. I believe I have found him in the Chicago area in 1900 census with a new family, or it could have been his original wife. Anyhow he was gone by 1910 and his daughter was married and had her brother living with her. I have been trying to trace these children with hopes of finding a living relative who could help me. I have a picture of good old Edward and he was a handsome man. Who knows perhaps your Rozella is related. If my Edward was also illegitimate it would explain why I can't find him in an earlier census. And believe me I have tried. Kathie

PHOTO: Henry ELMENDORF/ELMDORF and sisters? taken by Redden Studios in St. Chas, St. Chas Cty, MO

I bought a formal portrait of three children. Only the brother in the photo is identified as Henry ELMDORF. I believe these may be the children of Charles ELMENDORF and Catherine SOSMAN ELMENDORF. The family is listed in the 1870 Census St. Charles Cty, Missouri as the following: Charles Elmendorf, age 46, b. Prussia, his wife Catherine, age 36, b. Hannover, and their children all born MO: Catherine 6, Henry 5, John 4, William 2, Louise 6/12.

In the 1880 the same family is listed in St. Charles County, MO, but Henry is 16, and there is only one female child listed.

I am not related, but I would like to connect this photo with a family member or family researcher. Please contact me directly if you have an interest in this photo.

Kathy Wieland in St. Louis, MO
Kathy@craftsbykathy.com

Hello Dee. Let me try this again. Raymond V. Elmendorf is buried in Tacoma but I do not know the name of the cemetery. His brother Roy is buried in Chellis (sp) Washington. My mother (Ruth May) and father (Adam Jacob) are buried in Woodland. My uncle Earl is buried in California. I can probably find out where from my cousin Jean. You probably want other information but I will need to know more specifics to help you.

Sincerely, Mitchell Raab

Hi Dee,
I apologize for not listing your father-in-law as my Uncle Bill. Uncle Bill's mother is Grandma Gertrude to me. Ray's first wife was my mothers mother but she died when my mother was 18. I believe her name was Blanch Foster. I know her last name was Foster. Grandpa Ray was an engineer on the Northern Pacific as was his father Rufus. Ray had two brothers and they all played baseball in the Tacoma area. I believe the Elmendorf's may also have lived in Peoria, Illinois. My cousin Jean in California has also been looking into the Elmendorf and Foster families. I will send her a note and ask if she has anything she can share with you. It was nice hearing from you and I will help all I can.
Hi Dee,

Uncle Bill was Grandma Gertrude's son by her first marriage. My mother's mother died when my mother, Ruth, was 18. Grandma Gertrude's first husband (don't know his name suppose something Thorp) abandoned Gertrude & Uncle Bill. I don't know if Grandpa Ray and Grandma Gertrude actually adopted Uncle Bill. I always thought that they had.

I believe Uncle Bill had degrees from the Universtity of Puget Sound in Chemistry and The University of Washington in Languages - Spanish & Russian. Uncle Bill worked as a chemist for a time and perhaps taught as that was what Grandma encouraged him to pursue. However, Uncle Bill discovered that he really enjoyed languages and returned to university to pursue a career as a professor of languages.

I wish I had more information but I have been able to find out more about the Raabs than the Elmendorfs. I have found the 1860 & 1870 Michigan census with my Great Grandpa Wes and the family listed. However there is almost nothing regarding the Elmendorfs.

My cousin Jean from California does not have a great deal about the Elmendor family either. I don't know if you were able to correspond with Jean or not.

I appreciate the update.

Best regards, Mitch

I have found what I was looking for, Jonathan Elmendorf whos wife was Margritje Felten, they had a daughter Sarah Baptised April 6 1794, she married William Rose sometime around 1817, I am guessing that Sarah died in New York before 1850, it seems that they had at least 9 children, William, George, Absalom, Levi, Samuel, John W., Jonathan, Anna Margaret, and Sarah? which is questionable, I am still looking for a marriage record but I do have information from the Samuel Rose line that lived in Mecosta County Michigan that Sarah passed on in New York, John W. Rose was my 2nd Great Grandfather, if anyone would like to contact me for any family information please do. I am always excited about meeting new family. Thank You
Hi Mitchell,
I have a couple of more questions for you.
1. Were Roy, Ruth and Earl quite a bit older that Bill? I ask because the pictures that we have of Bill's family do not include any brothers and sisters.
2. I asked David about his Aunts and Uncles and he didn't know that he had any on Bill's side. He did (maybe) remember meeting I think a sister of Gertrude when he was very little.
3. Where in California is the Elmendorf family? David also thought he had relatives in California but didn't know they were actual Aunts, and Cousins.

He seems to be a bit interested now that I have opened a can of worms he didn't know anything about. I'm pretty excited...Thanks again so much! Dee

William passed away last summer and had alzheimers prior to that. The only real information I have is:
Birthday: 27 Aug 1884 in Tampico IL
Died: 1 Mar 1961 in Tacoma WA
He was supposed to have 12 brothers and sisters.
Any information that you may have about him would be great. I do familytree for my daughters, So Mr. Raymond would be my daughters Great Grandfather. I have some pictures of both he and Ms Gertrude. I can scan them and email them if you are interested. Also, if you have any information regarding the family that would be great....I am excited to hear from you.
