There are Elston decendants all over Battle Creek, Marshall area. In fact, I still have a brother and several cousins, nieces, nephews, etc... in the city. My father was Paul Bernard Elston and my mother was Sylvia Rose Skidmore Elston.

I have been unsucessful in finding earlier information about this family. Thanks for your consideration! Ralph Moonshower
Revision:::
My son pointed out a err in my logic:
I now understand that for Leonard MICHAEL to be a nephew, John would have been married to a sister of Samual ELSTON not a daughter.
Ralph Moonshower
rmoonshower@charter.net

Ralph Clark Elston was my Great Uncle. His brother Elmer raised my Dad (Edward J. Elston) from about age 14 til he went out on his own. Ralph and Elmer's brother, Charles D. Elston was my Grandfather. I never really knew him cause by the time I came along my Grandmother, Minnie Krumreich, had remarried to a guy named Sonny. I have pics of them as well as Uncle Ralph, Aunt Mae and Uncle Elmer and Aunt Avis. I have family tree info that goes back to John Elston b. 1604 Androssah, England Married to Joanne Waddock who had 8 children. I haven't confirmed all of the info yet and have found some conflicts with dates and names. I have a narrative list going back to Lewis Price Elston that is from one of Uncle Ralph's daughters, Alberta, Vera or Yvonne. I'll gladly share it with you along with any other info I have.
You may be helping me fill in a family line. I have a David Elston in my tree who may have been the father of the David you mention. I saw his possible father (David Elston), being born 1738 in Woodbridge, Middlesex County, NJ; dying 1832 in New Castle, KY. I have mostly been building my tree from others I have talked with and what I have found online. Any info you have would be great, if you don't mind sharing.
Hi Dawn,

I think this is probably a red herring, but......

I have a Mary Elizabeth Elston in my tree. She was my grandfather's half sister. Her parents were John Thomas Elston and Mary Elizabeth Sharman (became Mary Elizabeth Elston when she married). My grandfather was from the second marriage of JTE.

But, I don't recognise Miriam Jesse Elston - and all this took place in Thorney, Cambridgeshire, England. Only one of the family emigrated, my grandfather's brother, Harold William Elston, and curiously, he went to South Africa in the 1890s.

If this looks as though there may be a link, I have a lot more information about the family in England.

Keith

My mother and I were going through old photos last night and we ran across a 3 photos that were given to my grandparents from my grandpa's mother Lynn Matthews. The fist photo was of Miriam Jessie Elston the 2nd was of Mary Elizabeth Elston and the last was Lady Duff Gordon. The photo of Miriam Jessie Elston said it was my grandpas' grandmother. The photo of Mary Elisabeth Elston said it was grandpa's great grandmother. The photo of Lady Duff Gordon said it was grandpa's great great grandmother. I was just curious as to how far back this has been looked at. I tried to google the other names but I didn't get and solid leads on this information. Thank you for your time for reading this.

Dawn Wagner

Many thanks Mike, What a star you are!Lilian/Lucy was my grandmother. She married Edmund Henry Shopland Bulled. They had 11 children. THe last one (Walter Elston Reed Bulled) died in Oct 11.Appears that the Bulled name was dropped by the children. If you can help with a contact for Minnie`s descendant I would be grateful. Was not aware of Walter Elston`s wife`s name of Bessie (but knew he married an Elworthy - which is going to be my next project) & know of 11 children.Ada,Albert,Alice,Christine,Dorothy,Florence,Lucy,Maud,Minnie,Percy & Ernest. Plus a son emigrated to Philly in USA (don`t know his name). some information on the others would be a bonus.Believe that Ernest & Percy fought in Gallipoli in 1915.But that`s about all.
Kind Regards
Steve Reed

Hi Stephen,

Yes, Lilian Lucy Elston (known as Lucy), born in Rose Ash in 1892, was the daughter of Walter Elston and his wife Bessie née Elworthy. I believe she married Edward Bulled. She is found living in Rose Ash with her parents in the 1911 census. In 1901 she can be found with her widowed grandfather Elias Elston in Knowstone.

Walter Elston was born in Knowstone, a farmer first in Oakford then in Rose Ash, and he and Bessie had a very large family (at least 15 children).

You may know that Walter was a descendant of the Morchard Bishop Elston family who can be traced directly back to Nathaniel Elston (1638), the son of Thomas and Anne Elston of Shobrooke. Much is known about this very well researched and documented family.

I'm not related, but I was in touch a few years ago with a descendant of Lucy's sister Minnie. If you contact me maybe I can still put you in touch with her.

Regards,
Mike Elston

Hi Gillian,

Very interested to hear about your ggggm Elizabeth. I knew of the marriage to James Gill from Crediton (in case you haven't seen it, the Shobrooke PR says "Marriages 1818, Nov 17th, James Gill of Newton St Cyres & Elizabeth Elston of Shobrooke, married by banns with consent of parents; wit: William Roach, John Slade.")

I had no idea when she was born, except that she was apparently a minor when she married in 1818, so presumably after 1797. What evidence do you have for her birthdate being 1799?

I have not found a birth for Elizabeth Elston, in Shobrooke or anywhere else, that might fit your ancestor. However, the only baptism of an Elston in Shobrooke in 1799 was of Betty Elston, daughter of Samuel Elston & Mary Davy married there 23 Jun 1791. Do you think this might be your ancestor?

I can confirm, at least, that Elizabeth and Betty were treated as alternative names back then: my own ggggm was born Elizabeth Davey in 1792 in nearby Sandford, but is listed as Betty Elston when some of her children were baptised. Could it be that your ggggm chose the more elaborate version when she married?

If we can find any evidence that your Elizabeth is the same person as Betty, I can trace her ancestry back to the Elstons of Sandford in the late 17th century, though the trail gets a bit muddy at that point when trying to go further back.

I would also be very interested to hear more about James and Elizabeth's family, as I confess I haven't tried very hard to trace what happened to them. You can contact me privately through rootsweb or ancestry messaging if you prefer.

Regards,
Mike

Thank you Mike for this helpful information and the sources of your research.
My ancester is linked with the Ridge family and to date I had been unable to find the surname of Sarah Elston's mother for my records. John Ridge (the gardener) married an Elizabeth Yelland apparently. I am now wondering if the cemetary at Thorverton has any further ancentry referring to John Ridge's forefathers? Do you know how I would go about getting that information?
I may come back later for some more info on the Elston's.
Thanks once again
Margaret

Hi Margaret,

Yes, I'll be glad to tell you what I know. William Henry Ridge and Sarah Elston were married in Thorverton in Feb 1864, when her father's name was given as Samuel Elston; the witnesses were Ellen and Elias, Sarah's sister and brother.

Samuel Elston and Sarah Peppin or Pippin (known as Sally) were married on 25 Aug 1833 at St Mary Arches, Exeter; they had 6 children that I know of: James Peppin Elston (1834), Sarah (1837, above), Eleanor (c1840), Samuel (1843-1890, m. Sarah Edmunds 1869), Elias (1846-1866) and Eliza (1850). The family can be found in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses living in Thorverton.

Sarah Peppin was Samuel Elston's second wife; his first wife Mary (I don't know her maiden name) had borne him 3 daughters, Harriet, Dinah and Mary, before she died c.1830. Samuel himself died aged 58 in 1854, and his gravestone in Thorverton churchyard describes him as the son of Thomas and Dinah; his son Elias is commemorated on the same stone, shown as having died aged 21 in 1866.

Sarah Elston née Peppin continued to live in Thorverton until she died in 1884 aged 78. She was born 28 Mar 1806 in Withypool, Somerset, the daughter of John Pippin and Sarah Channon who were married on 10 Apr 1796 in Honiton on Otter, Devon; she appears to have been baptised in St Leonards, Shoreditch in London on 4 May 1806, and again in Poltimore, Devon in Jan 1809.

Samuel Elston was baptised on 17 Nov 1795 in Nymet Tracey, the 7th of 9 children of Thomas Elston and Dinah Raymont who were married in Morchard Bishop on 10 May 1779. Thomas's ancestry and family can be traced directly back to his 3xgreat-grandparents Thomas and Anne Elston of Shobrooke, who moved from there to Morchard Bishop, probably following their son Nathaniel who was living in Morchard Bishop by the mid-1660s.

William Henry Ridge was the 2nd son of John Ridge, a gardener, and his wife Elizabeth, of Thorverton.

Sources for the above include a letter believed to be from a vicar of Thorverton to a fellow researcher about the Elston and Ridge families; the Morchard Bishop and other Devon parish registers; the IGI, census records and the BMD index.

I hope this helps. I have masses more about the Elstons of Morchard Bishop, and a little more about the Raymont family.

Regards,

/mike
(Mike Elston)

Based on an LDS microfilm record search back in the 1970's I had concluded incorrectly that Samuel ELSTON and Sarah PEPPIN were linked to my family line. Mike Elston (mde176) set me straight by sharing that my William John LIGHTFOOT was the son of Samuel ELSTON and Mary (surname UNKNOWN).

In other words, Mike proved that Sarah (aka Sally) PEPPIN was not a member of my family line. Accordingly, I ceased to research her further.

I suggest you contact Mike, who has done the most work on the ELSTONs in this area of Devon and who has the most knowledge of the various family clusters that resided there.

Cheers!

Barry
Sooke, British Columbia, Canada

I think this Sarah is actually my 3rd great grandmother and that she married Frederick Goss (Jr.)in Rowan County, NC sometime after their marriage bond given 1 Jan. 1787 when she was a little over 15 years old. (Note this part of Rowan County was a few miles SE of what is now the town of Lexington in Davidson County, NC.)

The Marriage bond stated: "We acknowledge ourselves indebted to Richard Caswell, Esq., Governor or to his successors in the sum of five hundred lawful money of said state and void on condition there be no lawful cause to obstruct marriage between Frederick Goss and Sarah Elston.
Witness our hands and seals this first day of January. Sealed and delivered in the presence of Frederick x Goss /s mark Leonard x Rickard /s mark."

"A son, John Goss stated in the 1880 census that his mother, Sarah Elston was born in New Jersey. A Lanier Bible owned by Irene Brooks (a third great granddaughter of Frederick Goss and a great granddaughter of the Sarah Goss that married Nicholas Lanier) records the birth of Frederick's wife Salle, as 23 Dec. 1772"
Frederick and Sarah (Salle) had 13 children several of whom moved to Southern Indiana in the early 1800s
This is from "Frederick Goss of Rowan County, North Carolina and His Descendants" compiled by Lois Ione Hoitchkiss Heuss and privately published in Akron Ohio 1968..

Hi there, we corresponded a few years back about your family. I've sent an email message to you off-board with what I know about your father's aunts, uncles and cousins. If you don't receive it please contact me (you can click on my name to find out how to do that). Regards, Mike
