I've just found out that my Harold's brother Josiah also emigrated to Australia, probably just after WW1. He was in or near Adelaide. He became a professional banjo player and is mentioned in a jazz encyclopedia. He wrote a song "Son of Anzac" copywrighted in 1940. So the Eltham population in Oz is gradually increasing.

Thank you Liz, they were the 2 who joined the AIF, I have contacted them in case they have the medals but I've a feeling that they are looking for them. We have been in contact in the past I'm sure but I've never been able to tie in your Elthams to mine but I feel sure that there is a link somewhere. The earliest that I have dates for are: William Elthom abt 1698 & brother John Eltham abt 1700 both bapt St Andrews, Enfield. Parent's names were James & Ann Elthom.
Regards
Angie

Hi,
Possibly we have corresponded some years ago. My Elthams were from Berks / Oxon. I have recently found that some of my great grandfather's brother's family went to Australia in the early 1900s (Harold and his brother Josiah). My late father mentioned he visited some of his distant Eltham relatives in Australia (Sydney area, I think) just after the war ended (1945-6).
regards
Liz

Hi, Just thought I'd interject here, I have Eltham family who went to Australia from East London & enlisted in the AIF in WW1, 1 of them, Sidney, died Nov 1916 but his brother, Frederick, survived and as far as I am aware he didn't return to the UK. They were the sons of Charles & Rosa Eltham. After WW1 I have no further info for him.

Just a further thought. Eltham is an extremely unusual name in Australia.
There are several 'Elthams' who came to Australia from Europe after WW2 and adopted Eltham as a name when they arrived here.
There is one 'Eltham' family in Sydney; the gentleman came to Australia about 25 years ago.
The rest are related to our Eynsham/Oxford line, apart from the Tasmanian group, who seem somewhat uniterested but I feel motivated to follow them up!!!
Let's keep in contact.
Jenny

Hi, I think we communicated some time ago. My Harold Eltham was connected to the Elthams from Wantage, Berks / Oxon. I haven't yet found a connection with Elthams from Eynsham and Witney. Although the places aren't too far apart, so it is likely that if I can go back a bit further they might connect.

Harold Eltham emigrated to Australia

I have recently found a Harold Eltham who emigrated to Australia in 1907. He was 23 at the time, so would give his year of birth as about 1883 - 4. The only Harold I can find who fits is Harold William Eltham (born Headington, Oxfordshire)who was my great grandfather's brother's grandson (my father's second cousin in other words). My father (Robert Eltham)once told me he visited some relatives in Australia, just after the war finished when he was posted out in the far east in the Navy. He was sure they were his father's family (the Elthams) not conected to his mother's side. Is anyone able to confirm that the Harold who emigrated is the grandson of Josiah Eltham and therefrore the person I think he is. It would be great if any of his descendants were out there and would get in touch.

Hi Jo have you seen the 1901 census on line at http://www.census.pro.gov.uk
I have found the James Eltham I mentioned some time ago (aged 37 in 1901). He is married to Sarah from Calne, Wiltshire which confirms I had the right entry from the BMD index. They are living in Wantage at the time of the census. They have several children Jessie 13, Henry 11, Florence 9, Elizabeth 5, George 4, Dorothy 2 and Winifred 3 months. No sign of a Bill but he might have been born after 1901. This would make your George's birth late 1896 to early 1897. James's occupation is given as painter and house decorator. Oddly enough he also seems to appear in Abingdon on the same census as a painter's journeyman. I suspect he was actually working away from home and lodging in Abingdon on census day, but his wife also included him on the census form at his home.
Regards Liz

Jo,
I have found a marriage for George William Eltham (the elder) on the St Catharine's index. The marriage was registered in Headington in Quarter 3 (Jul - Sept) 1883 (ref 3a 1063. At that time there should only be two marriages recorded on one register page, so the spouse is narrowed down to either Emily Harris or Sarah Ann Drewett. The 1891 census should determine the wife's christian name and hence which of the two is correct. George William would have been about 19 at the time if his age on the 1881 census is correct. His father Josiah Eltham (my great-grandfather's elder brother) died a few months previously. His death at age 42 was registered in Headington in Q1 (Jan - Mar) 1883 (ref 3a 498). The Headington registration district covers Beckley (from 1844), Chippinghurst, Cowley, Cuddesdon, Denton, Elsfield, Forest Hill, Garsington, Headington, Holton, Horspath, Horton cum Studley, Iffley, Littlemore (from 1879), Marston, Oxford St. Clement, Oxford St. Giles, Oxford St. John the Baptist, Shotover, Shotover Hill Place, Stanton St. John, Stowood, Studley (from 1844), Wheatley, Woodeaton. This agrees with the address I have for the family in the 1881 census - Rose Cottage, Woodstock Road, Oxford St Giles

I have found out a little more. My grandfather (able seaman on his marriage certificate) George William Eltham's father was named James Eltham. I believe his father was called George William.

My grandfather married Beatrice Grace Morley on 13 March 1920. At that time he lived at 53 Grove Street Wantage and she lived in Devonshire Road Islington.

That is a far as I have got. An uncle has a suitcase full of photo's etc so that may turn up some more clues.

Best wishes

Jo

I think Sylvia, I've already actually sent a few e mails to you a while back, as we found out we're distant cousins. Our Eltham family comes from the Stepney/Southall areas too, but we cannot find relatives before 1800 I think, the trail runs cold, and it doesn't help that my Grandfather did not keep in touch with his brothers and sisters, but we found out their names from other cousins who we only found out about a few months a go!

I remember posting an uncompleted family tree to you once, as we are still unsure of the dates of births of my grandfather's siblings, however it was from your tree you sent that we completed ours!

Liz Eltham

Do you know when your George William Eltham was born? If he was in both wars I guess it must have been around the late 1890s. I have a George W Eltham ( the W may well stand for William, because that was his grandfather's name) but he was born in Wantage in around 1864 which would be too early. If you could find out your George William's father I might be able to match them up to some of the loose ends I have ( i.e Eltham's who were children in the 1870's and 1880's who probably married and had fammilies in the 1890s and 1900s)

Hello

I know my grandfather came from Wantage around 1912. He was called George William Eltham and he had one brother who was called Bill . George was in the Navy and was in both wars then moved to Kent. His family were country people in Wantage.

I would like to do a family tree on my branch of The Eltham's and the other family names which I do not know. Have you heard of them in your search?

Look forward to hearing from you

Jo

I am sorry but I don't recognise any of the names you mention. I have not researched my family history yet, just in the early stages of thinking about it, but I will let you Know if their are any connections when if I can find any. Good luck in your search, regards Clive.

I'm looking for my Eltham ancestors in the
Wantage area. My grandfather was Heber Eltham
(born in Chilton). He had brothers Ben, Stanley, Thomas and Hungerford,
and sisters, Minnie and Rose.
Their father (my great grandfather was Alfred
Eltham,(born in Wantage). He had brothers Josiah
(or Joshua), William, Thomas; and sisters,
Ann, Rosanna and Fannie. Their father was
William Eltham (born West Challow)and their
mother was Lydia (mn unknown). William was
born in c 1813 and died in 1884.
I have found a number of Elthams born in
East or West Challow at around the time of
William's birth so they could be brothers
or close cousins. According to the 1881
census, many of them (including William) were
sawyers, so that makes me think some of them
might be connected.
Do you recognise any of these names or places in your own tree?
