Glad to see you and Lin have connected here. Something in an earlier post of your's Sylvia, caught my eye striking 'something' in the recesses of my mind. Made me think you and Lin may possibly have a connection. Not being an actual ELVIN researcher, I cannot recall what it was.

Anyway, good luck to you both. If nothing else, being in contact helps you to separate your respective ELVINs.

Warm regards,
Toni

Thanks for your reply. I don't have an Andrew in my family tree but I have quite a few Elvin records for Co. Donegal. When was your Andrew born? Who did he marry? There appears to be a few Elvin families who went to Scotland in the early part of the 1800's. Looking forward to hearing from you...Sylvia

Hi Sylvia

I'm Lin. Looking through your messages I don't think that we connect. My Irish Elvin was Andrew (don't know where he came from in Ireland). None of the names you mention are familiar to me. If, however, you do have an Andrew Elvin (who also married and Elvin) I would be glad to hear it! Best wishes, Lin

Toni, Thank you for your reply. Eddrim is in the Parish of Killymard, County Donegal. I've never heard of Lin Duke, I would be interested in getting in touch with her. If you could make the contact I would appreciate it. I don't have a sub for UK Ancestry but my local library has the Ancestry Library Edition. It has most databases but may be missing some UK records, thanks for the offer to do checking for me. I also have some records for Scottish Elvins, I believe some of them came from Ireland earlier in the 19th century. Thomas was a name used over and over again in the Irish Elvins.
regards, Sylvia
Sylvia,

Where is Eddrim? Have you ever encountered a lady named Lin Duke whilst using the message boards/mailing lists? She is an ELVIN researcher too. I'm afraid I don't know exactly what info she has although I do know it is quite extensive on her own lines. Also includes Irish. She and I have mutual ELVIN cousins from my grand-aunt's marriage to Thomas ELVIN in 1908 Glasgow.

If you haven't 'met' Lin, let me know if you would like to make contact with her. Do you have a UK sub to Ancestry? Let me know if you'd like something checked out. If I can help I will.

Warm regards,
Toni

Firstly, I am not an ELVIN researcher per se. I have an interest in descendants of my grandmother's sister who married an ELVIN in Glasgow in 1908.

You should be able to find the exact date of their arrival on the ELLIS ISLAND web site. I do not have a sub to that. They should also be in the 1890 census.

When asking for info/help, be sure to give all details. Work backwards and latterly to discover other family connections. Less stress and agro if you go on facts rather than family stories (keep stories in back of mind tho).

I was under the impression your Ellen came as an unmarried woman, so searched under her ms.

Good wishes in your research.
Toni

She was Ellen Quinn when she came. I think they came in 1884 and her son Daniel was 2, Hugh was 5, James was 7 and Charles was 9. The family story was that my grandfather, James, came earlier with his father and Charles, Jr. stayed to help his mother. Charles worked in the spinning mills as did my grandfather. There were other Quinns in Pittsfield before them, a cousin Frank who ran a bar, there was a Mayor Dooley of Rhode Island having to do with the Narragansett race track and a Daniel McGonigal, who was a Pittsfield policeman. There were also McGolgans who Grampy said were related. this was all related to the family. My great grandmother died in 1910.

Ellen Elvin was the daughter of James Elvin and Jane (name unknown). She also had brothers called John, James, Dan, Ben and Charles also another sister called Margaret. This information is from a fragment of the 1841 and 1851 census.
In the 1901 census John is living in Eddrim with wife, Maggie and daughter Minnie.
I think I have more on this family but will have to search through my files.....it would be easier from now on to continue contact through my email address: cmoore007@sympatico.ca........Sylvia
Did your Ellen ELVIN arrive in MA as a married woman or a single woman? There are 3 ELVIN females (forenames nor birth years not stated) who sailed from England in 1908 & 1909. Two left from Liverpool bound for Boston, the other from Southampton to New York City. This out-bound list covers the years 1890 to 1960.

Toni

I am a great grandaughter of Ellen Elvin daughter of James who lived in Eddrim Glebe, Killymard Parish, Donegal. She was born 1853 and died in 1910 in Pittsfield, Ma. My greatgrandfather was Charles Quinn of Drumkeeghan, Killymard Parish Donegal. I know little about her or her husband and am seeking any info. Records are scarce. I found James Elvin listed in 1825 in Eddrim Glebe and leasing 9 acres from Rev. William Hughes (in tithe applottment records). By 1911 there were no Elvins in
Eddim Glebe. I think she emmigrated in 1894 to Mass.

Emma Elvin was my grandmother's sister. She joined the Salvation Army and in the late 1890s went to Bombay to marry Sheikh Abdul Aziz (a Persian), also a Salvation Army Officer. She became known as Amina, the local equivalent of Emma. They served as missionaries in India for many years. I know that she returned to England in the later part of her life (when, I don't know) and died in Lancashire in 1955, age 85. I haven't yet traced whether Abdul died in India or in England, though I suspect he did return with her. I believe they had at least one child (who died) while in India, and would like to find out if there were other children and whether they came to England or remained in India.

Bill,
I am new to Ancestry.com and just looked for the name Elvin which is my maiden name. We have a geneology of our Elvin tree that began in 1781 with Asven Hemming Ellvin who immigrated from Finland to Sweden. My great grandfather was Svante(Sven)Oscar Ellvin who was born in 1844 in Sweden but immigrated to the US(Chicago)in 1867. He moved from there to Lindsborg, Ks. where he died in 1924. Svante had 2 brothers that the geneologist could not trace. We did finally trace one of them Johan(John)Alfred Elvin who shows up in the 1900 census Wheatland township in Wisconsin. He and my Sven also had 3 sisters who married and stayed in Sweden. I am wondering if any of the John Elvin group in Missouri might have come from that branch somewhere. Also wondering if the 3rd brother might have immigrated to England and become part of that branch. Sven(Svante) Oscar also had 2 first cousins who immigrated to the US. Their names were Carl Gustaf Ellvin(changed his name to Charles E Lee)and Johan August Elvin. We know about some descendants of Charles E. Lee but have nothing on the Johan August cousin.
Anyway, maybe none of this matches any of the details you have but it was interesting for me to see the messages between you and Otto. The connections could be there somewhere up the lineage.
Karlene(Elvin)Preston
jkpreston@netzero.com

I am wondering if the John Elvin mentioned in your notes happens to be my grandfather's uncle. My grandfather's name was Carl Gustav Elvin and he was born 9/9/1875 in Chicago, Illinois. His father was Sven Oscar Elvin who was born 12/31/1844 in Hudiksvall, Sweden. Sven Oscar had 2 brothers that we have not been able to find. One, John(Johan) Alfred Elvin they believe immigrated to Wisconsin from Sweden but we haven't found his descendants yet that I know of. My grandfather had 3 brother's one of which was named John. Possibly he was named for his uncle who would have been Sven Oscar Elvin's brother John(Johan)? Also wondering if the England Elvin's could be the other brother that they are not sure where he went. Sven also had 3 sisters but they married and stayed in Sweden. Sven and his wife left Illinois and settled in Lindsborg, Ks. when my grandfather was small. Let me know if you think any of these could be related to your search.
Karlene(Elvin)Preston
jkpreston@netzero.com

I'm descended from James Elvin and Jane Humes of County Donegal, Ireland. They had George Elvin born 1851, who married Mary Funston. Their daughter Sarah Ann Elvin born 1894 was my grandmother. Interested in exchanging information with other descendants of James Elvin. I'm also looking for a photograph of Sarah.
Thank you for the clarification I have been rather puzzled about Moulton. In the 1851 census it said Moulton Norfolk but if there were two Moultons in Norfolk that leaves me with a bigger problem It may be why I have had little or no response from my postings.
Anyway I'll keep trying.
Regards
Merinda

She was the widow of Rev. Peter G. Blight. I wonder if there is a connection?

We have many relatives around in both places, but only three of us from that era
My sister b 1921 and me 1929, Cousin Robina(Ruby) .b 1922, spinster living in Glasgow is the only survivor from Uncle Bob`s children.
I live in St Ives near Cambridge now, three daughters six Gr Ch and two Gr Gr Gr children.
My wife and I were in Branson Mo last year and hope to visit again, we like visiting USA and C&W music.
We had a close friend moved there to be near their family in Feb this year also.
If I can help I would be pleased to hear from you
Bill Elvin

Thomas ELVIN Family: 1800s+ Glasgow, SCT

David,

Do you have the parents of Ann (Margaret Ann Marie) ELVIN?

These are my ELVINs:

Thomas ELVIN born c1888 Glasgow; a journeyman ham curer! - son of Thomas ELVIN a butcher and Bridget GRANT.

At age 20, on 13 March 1908, according to the Forms of the United Free Church, after banns to (174 Garngadhill Glasgow, married my great-aunt:

Thomasina (aka Ina) BROWN age 19, born Glasgow, daughter of Andrew BROWN born c1853 Edinburgh and Martha Jamieson CLARK born 1858 Shetland.

Witneses: John Alexander TULLOCH (could be TULLOCK) and Elizabeth FISHER.

Children born to Ina and Thomas:

Thomas William aka Willie
Thomasina aka Ina - ( married Albert LAKE ?? )
Nettie (Jeanette / Janette / Janet ?? - Mother had a sister Janet)
William (Billy) - still alive in Glasgow - has children

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (GRO Edinburgh) is a fabulous web site to go to for data, if you aren't able to actually travel to the GRO. Births to 1903 (soon 1904); marriages to 1926; deaths to 1954. After approx. 4 hours, £30 (150 credits) I had been able to print off 17 pages from BMDs & census registries, also gained lots of data/leads from parish records. BROWN & CLARK are very common names in Scotland, and I found them relatively easy to find at this web site, starting with my grandmother who died in 1933 (younger sister to Thomasina Brown), though knowing her birth year & parents' names.

Might be worth your while to visit the site for your group, especially if you have any more data on James William WATT and who his wife was.

If my ELVINs don't mean anything to you, perhaps they will to another surfing by.

Cheerio ...
I am probably a relative of one of the Elvins who went to the US. My grandfathers name was George F. Elvin. Never met him, he passed before I was born. One of his sons, Merle, was my father. He passed November 1985. My dads brother, Harry, also passed before I was born. Do you know the names of the relatives who came to the US?
