It seems I am a relative of George B Ely by way of my mom, Agatha Belle Nix. I see the middle name Belle is often a part of these family lines. I just found that George was a Texas Ranger in the 1860's.

Thanks for your reply, but The Elizabeth I'm related to is a different one. She was married to a Kelley and then a Lovett. Her parents were William and Martha, also know as Mary. It's Martha's maiden name that is unknown for sure or her background. Thanks though.

Her mother's name I believe to be the same person I am searching for. I think it is Eliza Ely. She changed her name a couple of times in the census records due to marriage and I have know reason why she changed her first name but I think originally she was Archange Knore or Arc Angel Knore then later Angel but I do know she was a Byroads also spelled Byrode. She was married to Alexander Sr. first then to Eli Ely on 12/26/1866. She was born approx. 1808 and died around 1876. Maybe this is who you are looking for maybe not.

There are thousands of Elys. If you can give me more information, I might be able to find the information you are looking for. There was an Ely line in New England. I'm descended from the Ely line that came to Virginia. Many of those Elys made it to Texas, and others came all the way West to California.
Google "Ely Family" and see what you come up with. There are also some links on the Ely message board.
Carol

Nathaniel ELY; England > Massachusetts; d. December 25, 1675

GENEALOGICAL and PERSONAL MEMOIRS
Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts
Prepared under the editorial supervision of William Richard CUTTER, A. M.
Historian of the New England Historic Genealogical Society; Librarian of Woburn Public Library; Author of “The Cutter Family,” “History of Arlington,” “Bibliography of Woburn,” etc., etc.
Volume I.; Illustrated
New York; Lewis Historical Publishing Company; 1908
Pages 154 - 157

ELY

Nathaniel Ely (I), the immigrant ancestor, was born in England, doubtless at Tenterden, county Kent, in 1605. He received a common school education, as evidenced by the records left behind him. He married, in England, Martha _______, he had a son and daughter before leaving his native land. He came to America it is thought in 1834 [probably should be 1634], in the bark "Elizabeth," from Ipswich, England. His name is not on the passenger list, but that of his friend Robert Day appears, and as they settled on adjoining lots in Newtown, Massachusetts Bay, now in the city of Cambridge, May 6, 1635, it is reasonable to believe that they came together. In June, 1636, Rev. Thomas Hooker and about a hundred others, men, women and children, probably including Nathaniel Ely, made their way through the wilderness to a fertile spot on the Connecticut river and made the first settlement at Hartford. It appears from the early records and a map made in 1640 that Ely owned a homestead there. In 1639 he was one of the constables, and in 1643 and 1649 one of the selectmen. The name of Nathaniel Ely is on the monument to the memory of the first settlers of Hartford. He afterwards removed to what is now Norwalk, Connecticut, of which he was one of the founders and first settlers. There he remained until 1659, when he sold his property and removed to Springfield, Massachusetts, where he passed the remainder of his life. Here, as at Hartford, he was called to serve the public soon after his arrival, and was selectman in Springfield in 1661-63-66-68-71 and 73. His place of residence in that town from 1660 to 1665 is not definitely known, though it is most likely that he lived in what is now Chicopee. In 1665 he became the keeper of the ordinary, or tavern, a business which he continued to follow to the time of his death, December 25, 1675. Martha, his wife, died in Springfield, October 23, 1688. Children: 1. Samuel, mentioned below. 2. Ruth, died October 12, 1662.

(II) Samuel Ely, son of Nathaniel Ely (I), was born probably in Hartford, Connecticut, or Cambridge, Massachusetts; died March 19, 1692. He removed to Springfield with his parents, and married in that town, October 28, 1659, Mary Day, daughter and youngest child of Robert Day and his second wife Editha (Stebbins) Day. Mary was born in Hartford in 1641. Samuel Ely was quite successful in acquiring property, and at his death left a considerable estate. He died in Springfield. Ten of their sixteen children died in infancy or in early youth. Children: 1. Child, born and died in 1660, at Springfield. 2. Samuel, born March 1, 1662, died March 22, 1662. 3. Joseph, born August 20, 1663, died April 29, 1755, in West Springfield. 4. Samuel, born November 4, 1664, died February 18, 1665. 5. Mary, born March 29, 1667; died April 19, 1667. 6. Ernst David and variations of this name have been a constant in the family names through the generations.

My family is from Fredrikstad and were shipowners and shipbuilders with my branch of the family migrating to Australia at the begining of th 20th century.

Pierre

Lois Emma Cordon born about 1917, father Ernest Cordon, She married Leonard Ely on the 18th April 1938 and my mother was born in the august of the same year. She also had another daughter, Valerie in 1943 who died in 1945. Lois died in 1944. The only record I have been able to find for Leonard Ely is his marriage to Lois Cordon. Leonard's father is listed as Albert Ely but he was deceased at the time of the marriage.

Please let me know if any of this means anything to you,as I am trying to find information myself

My daughter has just returned from the USA Boston (Marblehead) with a query from a message board out there for details of a Lois Emma Cordon maried to Leonard Ely. We are the Cordon family with the name of Ely in our ancestry.
I am currently asking if we can find these people.

Thanks for all of the information, I had said this AM that I felt like digging into some genealogy today and you've provided a starting place for me. Quite a while ago I had seen that a Eugenia Ely had married a Rockwell (the message board had a post from s Rockwell descendant) but it was a dead link so it was a dead end. I will certainly follow your suggestions. Thanks again!

Also, there are a few additional items I neglected to put in my prior post. Eugenia's parents were Oliver and Eliza (Quick) Ely and Eugenia's nickname was "Genie". Also, Harriet Dodge Tracy was Eugenia's aunt and that is why she and her husband, Henry C. Tracy adopted her. Again, all this is in the "Settler" and if you cannot get on line through the Historical Society, just try a google search for the Rockwells of Monroeton Bradford County Historical Society. There is also more information at the Historical Society that relate to the Rockwell Family that did not make it to the Journal. Perhaps there may be more information on the Ely Family there as well.

Regards,
Caroline Warner

You may want to refer to "The Settler", May 2008, Volume XLVI, Number 2. It is the Bradford County Historical Society Quarterly Magazine and I believe it is available on line www.bradfordhistory.com. It is a profile on the Rockwell Family but it may be of use to you. In a quick summarization, the youngest daughter (to whom I believe you are referring being raised by the Rockwell Family in Monroeton, PA) was Eugenia Ely (1865-1946). However, she was adopted by the Tracy Family (Henry C . and Harriet Dodge) when she was 2 1/2 and both her parents died. This would put her parents' death between 1867-1868. She married John Rockwell (1861-1950) and that is where the Rockwell connection came in. She was apparently very bright and gave her commencement speech at the Hamilton Female Seminary (in Hamilton, NY) in Latin. Also, you may want to refer to the History of Bucks County (Davis) which is available on the open library.org. There are a few editions but there are entries on the Ely Family. I am not sure if there is a connection there but you may recognize some of the names. I hope this helps.

Regards,
Caroline Warner

Thanks so much. I've been hoping that someone else would see a Bradford County connection. I would still like to be able to be able to prove that Oliver ended up in either Centre, Clinton, or McKean County. He appears to have disappeared once he leaves Bradford County. But then Ferdinand reappears in Norwich PA. I think that the lumberjacks just didn't get counted in the census. I'm missing about 30+ years and both Elk and Cameron Counties lost records due to fires. This genealogy stuff gets tough! Great to hear from you! Thanks again! Susan Ely

I am looking for any information on my grandfather Leonard Ely, born about 1919, married Lois E Cordon in 1938, his father was Albert Ely who had died by the time Leonard married. His surname could be spelt ELY or ELEY the same as my mother's maiden name. I think he's from the nottingham area, lived in beeston. I have tried the registry office for his birth, they can't find him. So i'm now out of ideas.
Any help would be appreciated.

Looking for information about the wife of William Ely. Spelled Eley sometimes also. William was born in Lebanon Co., Pa. in 1818. Died in Luzerne Co., Pa. in 1890. Lived in the Plymouth area. Married about 1842 in Dauphin Co. He was living in Rush Twp., Dauphin Co. in 1840. His wife is listed on census reports as Martha and Mary. Best guess from family information is Martha and maiden name Hooven. Could be Hoover though. She would have been born in 1820's. It is possible neither last name is correct, information is vague. Thanks.

I found a Thomas Ely, son of Jas (or Sas) of Bly, Carpenter and Susanna, christened on Jan 29, 1727 at St. Dunstan and All Saints, Middlesex. There is another entry of a Sarah Ealy, baptised on 18 May, 1729 at St Dunstan in The West, London (daughter of James Ealy). Could they be siblings? I know the names are spelled differently. These entries were found on Ancestry.com under All London, England, Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812.

Joseph Ely

I have been trying for years to find the parents of my ggg-grandfather Abraham Ely, b. 1788 in New Jersey according to the family bible. I think his father might be Joseph Ely, b. 23 Apr 1751, son of William and Elizabeth (Perkins)Ely;however,I have never been able to find a definite connection, only coincidences. Joseph married Susan Williams, and they had three children, according to "The Ely Ancestry": Henry, Moses Benjamin, b 1786, and Abraham. If Abraham was born after Moses Benjamin, that would be the right time period, but as I said, no proof. My ancestor's death certificate indicates his parents were Abraham and Sarah, but those are his name and his wife's name, so I think a mistake was made there by whoever provided the information. I have not been able to locate any other information about Joseph Ely or his wife. Can anyone help? Thank you.

No. I have:

Nathaniel probably migrated from Ipswich, England, to Boston, Massachusetts, in April 1634, on the ship "Elizabeth". He settled at Newtown (now Cambridge) and was made freeman (elibible to vote) there 6 May 1635 which meant that he was "twenty-one yeasr of age, sober and peaceable conversation, ortodox in the fundamentals of religion and possessed of a ratable estate of twenty pounds."

Rev. Thomas Hooker, the first minister of Cambridge, led about one hundred people, including Nathaniel Ely’s family, to Hartford, Connecticut, in June, 1636. They threaded their way through the wilderness with only a compass to guide them. Nathaniel appointed constable there by the Particular Court of Connecticut on 6 February 1639 which meant he was responsible for preserving the peace of the town, executing its laws when resisted, enforcing penalties, collecting rates, and overseeing watches and wards. He was a selectman in 1643 and 1649. His name appears on a monument in Hartford honoring its earliest settlers.

Nathaniel Ely and Richard Olmsted were granted their petition to the court in 1649 to make the first settlement in Norwalk, Connecticut, on land Governor George Ludlow had purchased from the Indians in 1640 for "tenn fathom Tobackoe, three kettles of six hands about, tenn looking, glasses." The Indians signed a deed on 15 February 1651 to Richard Webb, Nathaniel Eli, Matthew Marven, senr., Nathaniel Richards, Isacke More, Thomas Fitch, Thomas Hales, Richard Holmsted, Richard Seamer, Ralph Keeler, Matther Marven, Jr., Nathaniel Haies, Edward Church, and Joseph Fitch, all planters of Norwalke, for lands known as Runckinheage, Rooaton, for "thirtie fathom of wampum, tenn kettles, fifteen coates, tenn payr of stockings, ten knifes, tenn hookes, twenty pipes, tenn muckes, and tenn needles."

Roger Ludlowe conveyed his entire interest in Norwalk to Nathaniel Ely and others on 13 April 1654. Town records are incomplete, but we know the Ely family had settled there by 1654 when Nathaniel was elected constable. He sold his property in Norwalk to Thomas Betts in 1659 and moved to Springfield, Massachusetts.

He was selectman in Springfield in 1661, 1663, 1666, 1668, 1671, and 1673. Seating assignments in the meeting house were determined by worldly condition and social importance. Women sat on one side and men on the other. In 1663 Nathaniel’s seat was on the second row. Not all people were happy with their assignments and in 1666 the selectmen imposed fines on people who did not sit where they were supposed to.

In 1665 he became the keeper of an "ordinary" or tavern, the occupation he followed the rest of his life. Licenses were granted to only the most respectable of men, but the vocation was not without its headaches. On 24 September 1667 "Nathaniel Ely was complained of by the selectmen of Springfield for selling four quarts of cider to Indians contrary to law. Being called upon to purge himself by his oath, as provided by law, he refused to do it, and was adjudged to pay 16 pounds, or 40 shillings per pint. In consideration of his regard for the sanctity of an oath, or from some other motive, the General Court afterward abated this fine one-half." Then in September 1674 "the jury presented Nathaniel Ely, the ordinary keeper at Springfield, for not keeping beer constantly in his house according to law, for which they testify his own confession. Whereupon he being called into ye Corte, sitting in his house, and examined about the case he did acknowledge the thing; that he of late has kept only table beere, but could not say it was according to law, viz: after the rate of 4 bushels of good barley malt to be hhd., and further, he said he would not be turned out of his way; whereupon ye Corte fyned him 40s for ye use of ye county, all persons also judging this beere farr below that rule in ye law."" The old Ely tavern was on Main Street in Springfield for 200 years, then moved to the corner of Dwight and Sanford streets.
He died intestate and the estate was valued at 164 pounds. The inventory included land, a negro man, books, and numerous debts owed to him.

Sources:
"Records of the Descendants of Nathaniel Ely" by Herman Ely
"Records of the Particular Court of Connecticut 1639-1663"
"Springfield 1636-1886, History of Town and City" by Mason A. Green

ELY, Nathaniel, Cambridge, propr. 1634; frm. May 6 1635. Rem. to Hartford Conn. in 1636, where he held several important offices. (The Pioneers of Massaachusetts p. 156)

The Ely and Day families had adjoining land in both Cambridge and Hartford.

1st Generation. Nathaniel Ely appears to have been one of the early settlers of the town of Springfield. He is said to have come from England and first to have settled in the town of ----------- in the southwestern part of Connecticut, and fron thence to have removed to Springfield. The time of his death as recorded is Dec. 25, 1675. The widow Martha Ely died Oct. 23, 1683, supposed to have been his widow. The only child of Nathaniel at present known of, was Samuel, probably born before they came to Springfield. It further appears from records that Ruth Elly, probably daughter of Nathaniel, was married to Jeremy Horton Oct. 3, 1661, and had one son Nathaniel Horton who settled in Enfield or Somers. He was born June 29, 1662. Ruth the mother died Oct. 12, 1662. (Longmeadow Families NEHGS Reg Volume 35 p. 236)

Title: English Emigrants to New England
Author: Charles Edward Banks
Publication: Southern Book Company, Baltimore 1957
Repository:
Note: National Genealogical Society Library Arlington, Virginia
Call Number: F3.B35 1957
Media: Book
Page: p. 85
Title: Longmeadow Families
Page: NEHGS Reg Volume 35 p. 236
Text: Nathaniel Ely ............... . The time of his death as recorded is Dec. 25, 1675.

From a book on the history of Springfield, illustrating Pynchon's handling of his patronage-client relationships with the tenants of the feudal manor of Springfield:

Nathaniel Ely's ordinary, or tavern keeper, served as the courtroom where Pynchon sat as magistrate. Ely, hwo rented his house and ladns from Pynchon for 8 shillings annually, was indebted to his landlord for more than 130 shilligns by 1664. Rather than hectoring Ely or threatening litigation, he allowed the tavern-keeper to get by simply by paying a 5 percent annual interest on the principal.

He was a brickmaker, carpenter, surveyor. Credited in 1663 for 3000 of bricks, 200 of cutt bricks... 200 of clapboards. In Dec 1664, JP paid him for "measuring 130 acres of land at freshwater brooke", and for "measuring land in Chik Plaine"; in April 1668; JP paid hm for 1 day to measure land at Woronak" adn for "measuring land at Mill River"; in 1669, credited for the "stairs for the Prison" house cellar" and "to geth teh Prison house finished"; Ely purchased the wine and rum needed for his ordinary in JP's general store.

Lotta fascinating New England ancestors, people! Tens of thousands came - only a couple of dozen were ever on the Mayflower!
