The Glendale CA Elzes are my family. Thomas Gordon Elz was my father. Alicia Bell Hudson Elz Parker was grandmother. My grandfather, Thomas Henry Elz died in 1925, and my grandmother married Roy Parker a couple of years later. My grandparents were both born in Ontario, Canada.

Dear Diana, I realize it's been years since our last communications. I've been trying to solve my husband's mysteries.
I have just found a 1930 US Census for Glendale LA with a Alicia B. Parker age 58 and he son Thomas G. Elz. This all fits into the previous info that you so kindly sent. When did Alicia remarry?
I still have not made a connection with my Elz's from Chicago.
I did find a Lewis Charles, Lawrena Joseph, and George J. who appear to be brothers of Thomas Henry Elz.
Hope all is well with you and yours
Merry Christmas!
Hi, I too am searching Elz and finding brick walls. My Great grandfather was John von Fredrick (AKA Fritz, Friedrick & Fred) Elz b. 7 Jul 1854 in Williamsburg Kings county New York d, 24 Sep 1905 in Chicago Cook county Illinois. He married Antonia Kaiser. Some records say he came to Chicago in 1878, or 1880 and 1890. I can find nothing for him in New York of Illianois from 1845 to 1878.
I have found a number of people named Elz in Illionis and New York but have not been able to connect them.
I realize this doesn't help you but thought I'd connect.
Happy hunting, Diana Elz Compton Milburn Utah

Dear Diana, In response to your posting of 22 Jun. It's amazing the similarities but I'm afraid we are not related. I too have corresponded with Henry Elz but have never been able to make a connection. My grandfather Hugo was also born in Chicago 1883. His father John Von Friedrick Elz (aka Fritz) was born in Williamsburg Kings County NY. At least that is what is on his Chicago marriage license. I have not been able to find a birth in NY for him (1854). He might have been born on the ship coming from Prussia. Sorry I can't be of more help. It name may have been Eltz but not for certain. There is an Elz river in Germany so unless you have proof of the change - don't assume.
Regards, Diana Elz Compton

Hi,
Saw your posting on Ancestry.
I knew there were other Diana Elz's out there. Met one years ago. Not related.
I don't believe we are related either - just wanted to check in with a namesake.
Good luck. I'm getting nowhere with mine. still stuck in New York. Doubt I'll ever get them back to Germany.
Regards Diana Elz Compton
Milburn Utah

My name is Diana Elz Swegman. My father was Thomas Gordon Elz, born 10 May 1911 in Chicago, IL. He died 24 Jan 1955 in West Palm Beach, FL. He was the adopted son of Thomas Henry Elz, born Nov 1969, in Canada. He died May 1925 in Los Angeles, CA. He married Alicia Belle Hudson in 1897 in Ontario, Canada. She was born Nov 1873 in Canada, and died March 1937, in Glendale, CA. My father, grandfather and grandmother are intermed at Forest Lawn, in Glendale, CA. I have my grandfather's Certificate of Citizenship, signed 30 Apr 1900.
I corresponded with Henry Elz, of Glendora, CA, in 1973. I still have that letter. He said, "He was born in 1908, and his father was born in Merzig, Germany, which is in the Rhineland Province. His father had told him before his death, in 1950, that is where the name originated and originally it was spelled ELTZ. When it was changed to ELZ he didn't know, or why it was changed. His son's name is John.
Dear Rick, Just starting back with the Elz branch. I'm certain you have the Henry Elz b. May 1897 NY - sisters Lilly b. Aug 1899 NY & Matilda b.1901 Ny Parents Henry b. Jun 1872 Germany m.abt 1893 to Ida b. 1868 NY. Is this your line?
I haven't made any connection to my Elz family.
Still looking for my great grandfather's birth in NY 7 Jul 1854. Can't find him moving to Chicago where the family settled.
Have been busy with my Mother's side from England. Easier than German searching.
Hope your search is progressing.
Regards Diana d.l.compton@att.net

My grandfather was Henry Elz of College Point NY---I believe his father was also Henry Elz---it is unclear whether the elder was born in Germany. Looking for sources; my apologies if I've already replied to your note---have lost rack of the initial searches I did a few weeks ago. Thanks Rick

Dear Rick, Thanks for your reply - yes, please keep me posted on your research. At present I don't have any Henry's in my tree. I was in touch with a Henry Elz of Valley Stream NY - last letter 1995. Is he related to you? There are so few Elz families in the USA but still I have not found any that connect.

I'm trying to track down ELZ family connections and saw your post. My mother's maiden name is Elz. Her father was Henry Elz. He was born in NYC in the late 1890s. I'm currently researching his mother and father. Don't know if there's a connection but will keep you posted if you'd like. Rick

I am searching for others with this surname. I know that there is an Eltz castle/river/valley in Germany. And I have heard through the family grapevine that when my ancestors came to America, the name was changed to "Elz" for pronunciation purposes, and so it remains. If anyone has any information regarding this surname, please contact me. Thank you for your anticipated assistance.
Sincerely,
Amy
