Emanuel/Maynor Family of Marlboro County, SC/Sampson County, NC

My name is Steve Maynor and I am in search of my Great-Great Grandparents and their family. My great-great granparents were Jonah and Luberta Bedsole Emanuel, both born in Sampson County, North Carolina. Jonah was born May of 1876 or 1877 and Luberta was born May of 1884 or 1885. Jonah and Luberta were both Native American of the Coharie Tribe, and were married in 1899. Their children were: Lubertha Ann Emanuel Maynor, James Watha Emanuel, Lina Casin Eveline "Casey" Emanuel, Myrtle Emanuel, Lillian M. Emanuel, Joseph Enoch Emanuel, Jesse Olive Emanuel, Amos Emanuel and Liddie Luveneal Emanuel. They moved to Clio, SC between the 1920's - 1940's and changed their name to Maynor. Jonah changed his name to Charlie Maynor and Luberta to "Rosie Maynor???", and not sure of the rest. My great grandmother Bertha Maynor and uncle Watha Emanuel did not move to Clio, SC, but they remained in Sampson County, NC. This is a real long and funny story, and if you are interested I will share in private. If you have any information on the family or their whereabouts please contact me, as I would love to reconnect.

Thanks,
Steve Maynor
stephenmaynor@gmail.com

Emanuel 's of Wales

I'm trying to find any information regarding the Emanuel line from Trevethin, Pontypool, Monmouthshire area of South Wales. The first Emanuel to appear in my family tree was my ggg-grandmother Ann (born 1833) who married Isaac Brain (born 1829). I have since traced her possible family back another three generations but details are sketchy. Ann's parents were James Emanuel and Mary Thomas, her paternal grandparents seem to be a George Ray and Joan Emanuel (born 1766) - James taking mother's surname as was illigitimate. Joan's parents were Whittington Emanuel Snr and Mary Cully (married 1752).

Re: Mary Emanuel Inquiry

Here is a copy of the translated letter written by Mary Emanuel to my great-grandmother, Mrs. Albert (Rosalie) Erdman.
My name is Claudette Moran, and I am writing in regards to request a family history research look up on this particular family.I have a hard copy letter dated 27 October 1921 that was sent to my great-grandmother Mrs. Albert (Rosalie) Erdman,1224 22nd Ave N Minneapolis Minn. The letter was written in the German language, and it was signed by Mari Emanuel. I have had the letter translated to the English language, and this is what Mari Emanuel wrote to my great-grandmother, Mrs. Albert Erdman and her family.
"Mari Wisconsin (She may have meant Merril, Wisconsin.)
October 27, 1921
Praise to Jesus Christ Dear brother in law and Sister and Children Be so good and come and visit us because we would be very glad because I am not very healthy and our Dad on Sunday fell into a hole and almost broke the rib he saw the doctor yesterday. Dear Brother in law and sister and children our two dear daughters are already married. Martha's dear husband's name is Oskar Mo and Klaera's dear husban's name is Wilhelm Schuster. They both have good husbands and dear daughter Mary goes to nursing* school and she learns very good and we haven't got many potatoes this year and we bought us 20 bushels and we paid 1 dollar per bushel are big potatoes. Dear sister brother in law and children we had here in our church the 40 hours praying and here were 10 priests and we were all in the church and the church was very filled with people. What else to write I don't know. (we) greet you all many times Amen Mari Emanuel"
I put an asterick by Mary's nursing school attendance, because according to a 1920 census from Merril, Wisconsin, the younger Mary Emanuel is listed as 8 years old, so I think that Mari Emanuel meant "nursery school".
According to a 1920 census from Merrril, Wisconsin, the family members are listed as Fred Emanuel, Mary Emanuel, Martha Emanuel, Clara Emanuel, and Mary Emanuel. Mary and Fred are buried at St. Francis Catholic Cemetary in Merril, Wisconsin. Since Mari Emanuel mentioned in her letter to my great-grandmother that she was quite ill, I just thought that I would let you know that she died in 1922. I would like very much to travel to Merril, Wisconsin to do further family history research on this particular branch of my family tree. My mother's family did not know of extended family on her paternal side of the family until her father died in 1984. This letter somehow survived from being thrown away. If you would like to request copies of the letter and the envelope that it came in before access to further family history information is made available, then please ask. I have no problem sending copies. Thank you for your help.

I'd love to share informtion with you. I have marriage, children, and death for Lunda (she married into the line I am researching). Henry Allen went to Texas. John died in 1857, married (don't know wife's name) but no children (will in Stanly County), Sarah married John W Burris. I see that you commented on the birth date of George Manuel in Tennessee in 1910. Is this Henry's son? I have no info about Mary.
Henry is, as far as I can tell, the son of Henry Manuel, senior who was in Stanly County area by 1800. He had two other sons, Brittian and George, who moved to Texas. I don't think the Simeon (or Sim) is any kin. He is listed as a mulatto. He may be from the Sampson County Manuels who are part Indian. I'm not sure but I think Henry came from Stokes County or somewhere near there.
A lot of this may be speculation but some of it is fact. I'd love to exchange information with you.

Re: Your posting of 16 Sep 2009 5:42 PM. My Emanuel family did not arrive until about 1880. WIlliam is a common name through the generations. I believe that I have correctly traced to a James, born ca 1801, Hanover Square, Monmouthshire, Wales. His son, William, born circa 1829, Trevethin, Monmouthshire, Wales, probably is the William of 1880 Census, Shenandoah, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania. William married Harriet Jones, born ca 1835 Mangotsfield, Gloucestershire, England. Harriet died 20 Oct 1886 in Shenandoah.

Best regards,
Bill McCole

All of his brother's you listedI know to be my ggrandmother's (Louis Short) uncles. The research I've done shows John's father was born in France. If that father is the same for all siblings I'm not sure. But if you can confirm, I would be too excited. Please get back when possible, Thank you!

Hello,

My father, Scott, was born March 20th, 1944 just outside of Los Angeles, CA. He was adopted by Ralph and Hazel Blow through a private adoption. After my dad passed, we came across some information about his birth parents. Unfortunately, it did not list their first names, only information about them and current health background. Through other paperwork we found information on atleast the last name of his birth parents, Emanuel.

I would like some more information if this sounds like he may have been related to you, for medical reasons. My husband and I are expecting our first child, and i do not like having missing 'links' in our medical records. My father passed away 2 years ago due to lung cancer (heavy long time smoker). I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes however no one on my mothers side has been known to have it this early in age. (My Grandfather was diagnosed in his mid 70's).

Anyway, i am not trying to reconnect with family, only obtain information.. although i wouldn't deny it if someone was interested.

Thank you,

Christine

I have not found Martha in a record related to Amos. I have found "bits and pieces" on many EMANUELs in Georgia but am unsure where to put the info. For example, the Georgia Senate on Wed, 14 Nov 1827 authorized Amos EMANUEL to operate a ferry on his land where Coffee's Road crosses the Little River in Lowndes County, GA (which is only two counties over from Thomas Co.) so there may be a connection between that Amos and the Martha who got married in Thomas Co. But I have nothing definite to tie Amos to Martha or anyone else for that matter. Perhaps he is the Amos EMANUEL in the Ware Co, GA census in 1850?

Have you found Martha Lucena in some kind of record related to Amos? Martha seems to be a common name in the emanuel family.I can not find any Emanuel famuily living in Thomas Co., Ga in the 1834 time period. I think there may be a relationship between her and Lucy Emanuel who married Ransom Roberts.

Hi. With my Georgia research I seem to have some difficulty concretely establishing some family lines past a certain point. I currently have Martha Lucena as a child of Asa. Is she the daughter of Amos? I have a death year for Martha of 1892 in Ft. Myers, FL. I have a marriage date for Martha and James Madison YOUMANS of Feb 6, 1834 in Thomas Co, GA. They are in the 1880 Census in District 104, Ogden, Manatee Co, FL.

How do you tie Martha to Amos Emanuel. My Martha married James M. Youmans in 1834 in Thomas county Georgia. They moved to Florida about 1840. James brother Stephen p. Youmans married a Caroline the ward of Ransom roberts who married Lucy Emanuel.

I am not certain who Lucy's parents were in the Georgia/Texas EMANUELs. I found online info that says she married Ransom on 24 Jan 1824 in Screven Co, GA but have not confirmed. I have found online notes that say they were in Jefferson Co, FL in 1840 and Matagorda Co, TX in 1870 but have not confirmed. I have found notes online for a daughter Martha and son Elisha born in Florida, a daughter Emily (or Emma) born in Louisiana and a daughter Susan (Sue) born in Texas but have not confirmed this info.

We have thus far been unable to establish our Louisiana connection.

His children were Charles Robert, Annie Jane, Eugenia Isabel, Minnie Madora, Joseph Hardy (Jr?), John Theodore, Sarah Evaline and Jessie Idonia.

Sorry I failed to answer all your questions. In a 1980's interview with an elderly Emanuel/Sizemore descendant, we visited Zion Cemetery and she pointed out the area of their graves. I hasten to add that most of the family of that generation and many of their relatives are buried there and I am confident she was knowledgeable. juliaemanuel@bellsouth.net

My son is a descendant of Joseph & Rebecca Emanuel/Manuel thru their son Charles. On the 1880 census in Precinct 21, Red Store, Mobile AL, Joseph (age 37) and Rebecca (age 30) have the following children in the household: Charles R. (age 13), Eugenia (age 10), Annie (age 7), Medora (age 4), Joseph H. (age 2), & John Thos. (age 2 months). The 1900 Mobile AL census shows Rebecca, Joseph (age 23), Jesse (age 18) and Sarah (age 15). We also found that Eugenia married Emmett Robert Sizemore and her sister, Jessie married Arthur Sizemore (both records in Mobile AL). Charles married Irene Mallory 25 Jun 1890 in Mobile AL yet the 1910 census states they had been married for 16 years (?).
After reading your post, we queried the Mobile online marriages and found the marriage between Joseph Meale and Rebecca Stokes. Do you have a copy of the actual record? Perhaps "Meale" is a transcription error.
Joseph Emanuel served in the 43rd AL Regiment (formed in Mobile) from Apr 20, 1862 until Sep 22, 1864. We also have not yet found death dates for Joseph or Rebecca, nor do we know where they are buried.
Any additional info would be appreciated.
We have just begun researching the Emanuel family. My ancestor is Carrie Emanuel who married Charles Henry Smith; Carrie is the sister of Herman Emanuel of Mobile, AL. Parents are Charles Robert Emanuel and Irene Mallory. Our research shows Charles Emanuel's parents as Joseph Emanuel (b. in Louisiana) and Rebecca (maiden name unknown b. in AL). We have also found in census research that the name sometimes shows up as Manuel. We'll be glad to share what we know. We are also interested in the Mallory family if you have information.

Manly and his wife Mary, along with Banjamin WANSTALL and Elizabeth LEVI, were tried in Canterbury on 28th June 1831 for stealing a large amount of household goods and furniture from the house of Mrs Frances Still DOWER and her son Charles Webb COLEMAN. Mary was cleared, but the other 3 were sentenced to 7 years transportation. It seems Manly went to Van Dieman's Land in July 1831, but may have returned as I think I have found him with his wife and 2 daughters in Canterbury on the 1841 Census.
Please contact me if you would like to know more, or if you can tell me any more - I have articles from The Times and from The Kentish Gazette of 1831.
Alison

Andrew IL and CO is my G-grandfather. I have quite a lot of info on some of his descendants. I also have some on Jacob IA. I do not have any information on Andrews death. Probably in CO 1878-1880. We have no info as to where he died or was buried. Probably Boulder County CO. What do you need?
