Hi,
I can remember my father telling me that some of his cousins on the Embleton side of the family went to live in Canada in the late 1800's.
My father was from East Bolden near Sunderland and was called Garnet Embleton. He was born in 1920 and his father(my granddad) was born approx 1884. He was called Harry Embleton and was married to Mary. They had another son called Martin Embleton (my uncle) and he never had any children.
I dont know if there is any connection with your family but I do know that my father talked about some of the family settling in Adelaide.

Hello,

Have just found your posting. I am interested in the Embletons from Alnwick. Are you related to any of them?
In particular, William Embleton 1785 who married an Isabella Reveley 1778. They had several children, one of which is my husband's grt grt grandmother. I am interested in trying to find any connection with is family. I have found someone who is connected to their son Benjamin in Missouri USA, but am looking for anyone connected to their daughter, Barbara who married Thomas Gleghorn or anyone else connected to Embletons in the North.

Both of his parents, John Henry and Dora Adams Embleton were born in Canada. I believe his grandfather was William EMbleton who came from England but not sure of the date.

Re: Looking for any relatives, doing a family tree

This is a rare and interesting name is of late medieval English origin. It is locational from places so called in Cumberland, Durham and Northumberland, although the meanings of the separate villages are slightly different. The village in Cumberland was first recorded in the form of "Emelton" in the rolls known as "The feet of fines" of the year 1195, and derives from the Old English pre 7th Century "Eanbald", a personal name, and "tun", a fence or enclosure. Durham's village was recorded in circa 1190 as "Elmedene", and the derivation is "Elm", the tree, and "denu", a valley, thus elm valley. Finally, Embleton in Northumberland, derives either from the Old English "Emel", meaning caterpillar and "dun", a hill, thus a hill infested by caterpillars, or the alternative suggestion is that the first element represents a personal name and if so, probably "Aemele". Early examples of the surname recordings taken from authentic church registers of the period, include the marriage between Alice Embleton and Gilbert Allison, on October 19th 1666, at Rothbury, and the christening of Robert Embleton, at Bedlington church, both recordings are from the county of Northumberland, on July 29th 1668. The first recorded spelling of the family name is believed to be that of Francis Embleton, which was dated March 3rd 1624, at the church of St Benets, Pauls Wharf, City of London, in the reign of King James 1st of England, and V1 of Scotland, 1603 - 1625.

My mother was told that her descendants came from the East Indies and we have a bowl which looks Indian which is supposed to have belonged to him. We were also told that the family had a connection to shipping. We also thought he might be mixed race.

It could be that his father was in the East India Company and I believe that in the 18th century it was encourage for white employees to marry native women. However, by the end of the 1700s it was frowned upon so a number were sent to the West Indies.

It's on my list to visit the East India Office archives but if anyone else fancies a trip, be my guest. I'm not going to make it to London in the foreseeable future.
Sue

Me again. I've found that John William Embleton was born in 1851 to Thomas Embleton and Mary Sprot. Now, my problem is to find something about Thomas. Censuses say he was born in Scotland, but sister Isabella born 13 years later in Cornhill. She was keeping house for him in 1861, as Mary died in 1852. Can't find if the family originated in Scotland or if their stay was only temporary when Thomas was born in app. 1816. Anyone else following this line of the Embleton family?

Hi,

Firstly, I'm not a direct male descendant, sorry. I'll have to talk to my dad about whether he knows any. I would be more closely related to one than you two because my grandmother was an Embleton, so her brothers would have been direct male descendants. Any sons that they had (my dad's cousins) would be too. Unfortunately my Dad isn't very close to some of his family, so I'm not sure if he'd be in touch with any of them. It may also be that they aren't as interested in their ancestry as we are, so wouldn't bother with the hassle of a DNA test. And who knows, some may not want to be told that they have black ancestors! Some people are like that.

My grandmother didn't look at all black as far as I can tell. But she is the great granddaughter of a mixed-race man so maybe she's too distant (I have a friend who is one-quarter black and you'd never have guessed). I don't have pictures of anyone further back than my grandmother. But I have second cousins who say they weren't surprised as their mother and uncle would go very dark when tanned.

I'm fascinated by the family legends that Sue mentioned. I didn't know any family legends about Richard, I only got back that far through research. I was surprised enough to find that my cousin had been told of 'a Jamaican ancestor somewhere along the line'. I'm keen to know how he end up in England but maybe we'll never know.

Tracing Richard's father will probably be very difficult. As far as I am aware slaves couldn't legally marry - if Richard's mother was a slave I don't see any reason to believe that his father would have been called Embleton. (But if he was instead the son of an Anglo-Indian man rather than the son of a female slave, that would be different).

I didn't have any knowledge of German ancestry either, but did have one that talked of my grandmother having Jewish ancestry. I was interested to note on the Lending The Way website that Wohlmann is apparently a Jewish name and that they therefore may have been Jewish. (By the way, is Gwyneth the person who runs the Lending The Way website?).

Best wishes

Adam

I wondered if Adam is a direct male descendant?

My grandmother was swarthy and my mother and her sister definitely tanned well so we all assumed it was from an Asian ancestor. My theory, totally unproven, was that Richard's father was employed by the East India Company and so made the journey from India to the West Indies because the East India sent their mixed race employees there in the early 1800s. At some point I'll look at the East India company records just to disprove the theory.

I think this is a project that could keep us all busy for many years!

Was the German connection passed down through the generations in your family? My mother and aunt had never heard of it.

I agree, this new lead is fascinating. Unfortunately, I am descended from Richard's first daughter Emma so my DNA would be as useful as yours for evidence of African type genes.
I have plenty of pictures of Richard's grandaughter Carrie, but am unable to detect anything in her face that suggests African heritage. I am presuming that any old photos you have are similarly unrevealing in this area.
I say this because i would have expected at least some of Richard's African side to have come through in his descendants.
Leaving that aside, I think the probability that this Richard is ours is high. But it would be nice to find more evidence either way!

I was fascinated to read this. I'm descended from James Embleton's daughter Eliza Hyam Embleton who married Will Barrett and have been in touch with Gwyneth and seen her wonderful web site.

Our side of the family always thought Richard Embleton came from the East Indies the story being that his father died and his step mother sent him away with nothing - so he pinched a silver spoon. We have nothing to substantiate this except a metal pot which looks Indian. No silver spoon either!

There was also talk of a ship called the something Embleton.

I don't know if you watched 'Who do you think you are' which threw some light on the surnames of slaves.

If you are a descendant on the male line can you do a DNA test?

Sue

Hi again,

Just to add to my earlier post, I suddenly wondered whether a slave could be legally sold in Liverpool in the 1820s. Slavery was abolished in stages, but apparently the trading of slaves was banned throughout the British Empire in 1807. Which makes me wonder how there could be a public sale of a slave in Jamaica in the 1820s. Maybe they took them outside Jamaica to sell them (presumably NOT to Liverpool).

I know someone who is quite knowledgeable on Carribbean family history, I'll have to raise that question with her.

Best wishes

Adam Stacey

Hi,

I've seen an actual handwritten entry. It has four Embleton children baptised on 15 October 1809 (you mentioned the 1810 register - I'm not sure how the registers work).

Susannah Embleton and Sarah Embleton, both 8 years old. A } sign is used to label them both 'twin children, free mulattoes'. Below them is Jane Embleton, aged abt 8 months, and Richard Mark Embleton, abt 4 years. (I wonder if he was rebaptised the following year?).
Again a } sign is used to indicated Jane and Richard and the word 'children' appears. Above that are the words 'free mulatto'. It is unclear to me whether it is supposed to indicate that Jane and Richard are 'free mulatto children' or whether the two terms are separate and that they are both 'children' but that Richard is a 'free mulatto' while Jane is not.

This is significant because I have also found slave returns from a later date which appear to list the same Jane Embleton.

A return in 1817 lists the slaves of Susannah Coleman, which include Elizabeth Embleton, a 36 year old. In the column headed 'colour' she is called a Negro, and in the column 'African or Creole' she is labelled 'African'. Also included are Jane Embleton aged 8, also labelled Negro, but Creole rather than African. Then listed is Rebecca Embleton, a 5 year old (Negro, Creole). Then listed is Sarah Coleman 1 and a half years old (Mulatto, Creole). All three of those children are then helpfully labelled 'daughter of Elizabeth Embleton'.

A return in 1826, giving the owner as Elizabeth Coleman, executrix to Susannah Coleman, doesn't mention any of the above except Jane, aged 17, being sold in a public sale (a sobering thought - did she ever see her family again?) Another slave on that return is called John McClenan (or something like it) and another slave return of 1826 shows an owner called 'Robert McClenan as attorney of Michael Hughes' with a 34 year old male slave surnamed 'Embleton or Hamelton' (but with no first name!). It's all a bit of a puzzle as it's hard to tell which surnames came from owners and which came from parents.

Finally, a slave return in 1832. The owner is Isabella Embleton (!). The slave John McClenan appears again, along with Elizabeth Embleton, Rebecca Embleton, Sarah Coleman and a few others (including another McClenan). There are a couple of notes in another column, although it is hard to tell which notes apply to which slave. One says 'Enrolled by E Coleman the year 1829 as executrix to the late S Coleman estate'. The other says 'Enrolled by Susannah Coleman in 1817 and 1820 and taken off the island by Michael Hughes in the HARD TO READ [Brig something?] Capt Fisher 15 Jul 1821 now in Liverpool'. It then reports that one of these slaves was sold (presumably in Liverpool) but it is unclear whether it's Rebecca Embleton or Elizabeth McClenan (it's definitely not both of them as the return reports a decrease of one slave).

What do we make of all that? It is interesting to see that surnames keep popping up as both slave surnames and owner or staff surnames, and that one of Elizabeth Embleton's children has the owner's surname instead. All of the returns I have quoted are obviously somehow connected to each other. But the only way that they are connected to the original christening record is due to the presence of Jane Embleton with matching age. Do we assume it's the same person or could there be two Jane Embletons of that age in Kingston?

Note also that the christening record does not say how the four Embleton children are related except that two are twins. It would be simple to assume that they are siblings, but who knows.

And finally the question of whether the christened child Richard Mark Embleton is our ancestor Richard Embleton at all (the censuses only say he came from the West Indies). I'm inclined to believe it is, because:
1) it is known that our ancestor Richard Embleton had a son called Mark Richard.
2) Richard Embleton isn't that common a name
3) the Lending The Way website says that our ancestor Richard Embleton was born in St Thomas - I don't know where they got that from since the censuses all just say West Indies, but St Thomas is the next parish to Kingston.
4) I recently learnt from a cousin that he had been told by his mother years ago that we had an ancestor who had come from Jamaica somewhere along the line (I had had no idea that such a memory had been preserved in our family).

Anyone else know any more or have any thoughts on this? I have scanned copies of all these documents that I can e-mail.

Adam Stacey

Dear Embletons,I was born in 1941 in Essex. My father,Sydney William was born in Bow,London and his Father in Walthemstow in Essex. Two very large Family trees exist.in walthamstow and Chelmsford neabye. They both go back to the 1640`s and are almost certainly linked. In Walthamstow we were carpenters and wheelwrights living in Marsh street.About the time of the first worldWar there was a split in the family and even my father Knew nothing about it.I have letters from a Lily embleton ,then living near Portsmouth, who knew something about the break.Of course its very difficult to trace a family accurately, people changed their names, lived together in pre-divorce days and families "absorbed"the many children born outside of marriage, etc please see my website for my adress. If I can help or you have more information,do please write to me.I am useless tapping on a key board!

Hi Stephen. My name is Stephen John Embelton and I live in Brisbane, Qld Australia.

I know our names are spelt differently but my family tell me it changed sometime during the history of our family. The story goes that everyone used to spell it Embelton so we just changed it. Funny thing is that I get people constantly spelling it today Embleton.
