I'm looking for the parents of Thomas Emerson who, according to my records, was born around 1800 in Vermont. Sometime around 1827 he married Sarah Glick and had Reuben, Christina (or Christian) and Laurel (these are the only ones I have definitive information on). He moved to Ridgefield, Ohio and died there in 1870. I've looked everywhere but I can find nothing on his parents or on the ancestry of his wife Sarah Glick. If anyone has information on either, I would really appreciate it.

I am looking for threads for Dorothy Jane Emerson (b.1866 in Durham) who married William Walton (b. 1864 in Durham). They had several children: Marjorie Walton (1907-1980), William Arthur, Ralph Henry, Charles, Elizabeth, Albert, Norman.
I believe William (dad) was a miner.

Dorothy Jane's father was Charles Emerson (b. 1842).
To Aeb2248
I'm sorry I can't be of help. What you see that predates approximately 1880 is not my work. The story I have posted was done by an aunt of a sister-in-law. She did lovely work, but she did little to document it. All of the earlier Emerson connections - that is, before approx 1870 - is material that I gleaned from OneWorldTree. I'm sure there must be documentation behind that work, but it was not visible to me. Lacking documentation, I cannot consider the Emerson material in my tree to be authoritative. Interesting though.

She died there probably between 1870 and 1875. Thanks, in advance, for any help.

Emerson familiy historical notes

Names of interest: Hanna Emerson, Cpt Samuel Emerson (16??-17??), Judith Davis Emerson (16??-17??), John W (Warren?) Emerson (186?-1909), Col Samuel Smith (1686-1709), Ensign Jon “Davis (b. 1623), John Demeritt (b. 1698), Rosamond Nutter (m.1670), Elizabeth Drew, William Drew, Wilamina (or Elmira) McAron.
I have documents that I have transcribed that and compiled as one that were written by Ann McWade (married name unknown) about her Emerson family connections. Her grandmother was Georgianna Emerson (1886-1963). The material is undated but probably was compiled in the 1960s. The connection to my interests is tangential, so I have not attempted to thoroughly parse this material though I have noted that many of the names are to be found in the One World Tree records of the Emerson families. The connection that I am interested in becomes tenuous early on with John Emerson (1847-1909), but it seems very likely that he was the son of James Emerson and Elizabeth Drew. I followed their connections in the One World Tree, essentially for the fun of it, to see where it would lead – as in a possible connection to Ralph Waldo Emerson. If John Emerson’s parentage is correct, then he is indeed a remote cousin of Ralph Waldo – and, even more remotely and very surprisingly, of Richard Bruce Cheney, GW Bush’s VP.
The document contains information of births, marriages, and even an interesting story of the abduction of one Ann Jenkins by the Indians. I feel confident that the material in this document is ripe for mining by Emerson researchers, and I am most willing to share it with anyone who is interested. The author was not a trained researcher, and as a result her sources have little documentation, but the leads are there for anyone interested to follow.
The link below will connect you to the story.
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/29443183/person/12178924192/m...
My mother was Maryn Emerson- I believe her name has been misspelled here. She was born on April 27, 1908, daughter of Walter Cowan Emerson( Died 1920) and Bertha Lucinda Holbert( died 1960).She had a sister Helen Henrietta born in 1910. She married Wilfred Gordon Nield on April 30, 1946 and I was born on April 10, 1949. My name is Lois Elizabeth. She died on Sept 17 1984.
My grandfather died of tuberculosis and while ill, built a family tree of his side of the family dating back to 1772 and beginning with John Emerson 1772-1848 who married Scroggie and had 8 children born from 1796 to 1812.
I can supply more information if anyone is interested.

Rumor has it that this Mark left a will naming his children (and I am searching for firm proof of his daughter Sally). Belknap, Merrimack, Rockingham, and Strafford county probate courts do not have a record of it. Does anyone have a copy of this will?

Yes we are related. Amelia was my great grandmother. She married Alexander Schell in Ontario and they moved to Superior Wisconsin in 1889. They had 7 or 8 children (some census confusion over a girl). Their son ALbert Inkerman Schell is my grandfather. He moved to new York City (Queens) around 1906. George is my great grand uncle. I have his name as William George and I have a photo.

Amelia and Alexander divorced. I literally found this out last week although I know from census recoirds that they were living aprt by 1910.
GENEALOGICAL and PERSONAL MEMOIRS
Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts
Prepared under the editorial supervision of William Richard CUTTER, A. M.
Historian of the New England Historic Genealogical Society; Librarian of Woburn Public Library; Author of “The Cutter Family,” “History of Arlington,” “Bibliography of Woburn,” etc., etc.
Volume I.; Illustrated
New York; Lewis Historical Publishing Company; 1908
Pages 95-96

EMERSON

Ralph Waldo Emerson, one of America's most famous men --philosopher and poet, was born in Boston, May 25, 1803, son of Rev. William and Ruth (Haskins) Emerson.

He received substantial instruction from his mother, and also from his aunt, Mary Moody Emerson, a woman of deep scholarship, and entered the grammar school at the age of eight, soon afterward entering the Latin school. He was already giving evidence of his intellectual powers, when eleven years old writing a poetic version from Virgil, and other verse. When fourteen he entered Harvard College. As a student there he excelled in Greek, history, composition and declamation, winning several prizes in the two latter subjects; was class poet in 1821, and had a part at commencement. For a few years he assisted his brother as teacher in a school preparatory to Harvard and also in a young ladies' school in Boston. At the age of twenty he took up the study of theology, and attended lectures at Harvard Divinity School, but did not pursue the full course. He accepted the Channing theology, was licensed to preach, and supplied various pulpits. In 1829 he became colleague of Rev. Henry Ware, Jr., pastor of the Second Church (Unitarian) Boston, and for eighteen months occupied the pulpit while that divine was abroad, finally succeeding him, and remained in the pastorate until 1832, when he resigned, on account of conscientious scruples against administering the communion as provided in the church office. In the two last years of his ministry his church was open to all classes of reformers, and several anti-slaveryites spoke there. In 1833 he visited Europe, in quest of health, meeting Walter Savage Landor, Coleridge, Wordsworth and Carlyle, and preached in London and elsewhere. In 1833-34 he lectured in Boston on "The Relation of Man to the Globe," and "Travels in Europe." In the latter year he was invited to the pastorate of the Unitarian Church in New Bedford, but declined on account of his scruples with reference to communion. In 1835 he lectured in Boston on biographical subjects -- Luther, Milton, Burke, Michael Angelo, and George Fox. In 1835 he lectured before the American Institute of Instruction on "Means of Inspiring a Taste for English Literature." During successive winters he lectured in Boston on "English Literature," "The Philosophy of History," and "Human Culture." In 1838 he preached for several months in the Unitarian Church at East Lexington but declined a settlement, saying, "My pulpit is the lyceum platform." In 1838-39 he lectured on "Resources of the Present Age," and in 1839-40 on "Human Life." In 1838 he delivered the address before the graduating class of Harvard Divinity Schools, in which he explicitly defined his faith, and which awoke such controversy that he separated from the Unitarians. In 1839 began the transcendentalism movement in Boston, and Mr. Emerson became an assistant editor of its organ, "The Dial," in 1842 became sole editor, and acted as such until 1844, when it lapsed. In 1841 was organized the Brook Farm experiment, with which he did not fully sympathize, but its founders and leaders were among his intimate friends, and he frequently visited them.

In 1841 Mr. Emerson's first volume of essays was published, and republished in England, winning for him high reputation there as well as in the United States. In 1847 he lectured in various places in England on "Representative Men," and in London on "The Mind and Manners of the Nineteenth Century," and also lectured in Scotland, where he was most cordially received. On his return home he lectured on "Characteristics of the English People." He was among the first contributors to "The Atlantic Monthly" at its founding. In 1860 he warmly espoused the anti-slavery cause; in January, 1861, took a prominent part in the annual meeting of the Massachusetts Anti-slavery Society; and in February, 1862, delivered an anti-slavery address to Washington on "American Civilization," which was heard by Mr. Lincoln and his cabinet, and next day the President made his personal acquaintance and the two held a long conference on the subject of slavery. From 1868 to 1870 he lectured at Harvard on "The Natural History of the Intellect." In 1872 he lost many valuable papers, including the sermons of his father, by the burning of his house, and in this disaster contracted a cold and sustained a shock from which he never recovered. He delivered the last address he ever wrote, April 19, 1875, on the one hundredth anniversary of the Concord fight, at the unveiling of French's statue, "The Minute-man." In 1879 he lectured on "Memory," before the Concord School of Philosophy, and the following year delivered his one hundredth lecture before the Concord Lyceum, on "New England Life and Letters." He was an overseer of Harvard College, 1867-79; a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; a member of the American Philosophical Society, and the Massachusetts History Society. He received the degree LL. D. from Harvard College in 1866.

Mr. Emerson married, September, 1829, Ellen L. Tucker, who died in February, 1832. He married second, September, 1835, Lydia Jackson, daughter of Charles Jackson, and a descendant of Rev. John Cotton. He died in Concord, Massachusetts, April 27, 1882.
Hi Lewis and other Emerson researchers,

Recently, I inherited a box of genealogy research and notes (not organized) regarding some EMERSONs from Beloit Wisconsin, specifically, Professor Ralph Emerson (Rockford) and Professor Joseph Emerson (Beloit).

I am still reviewing and organizing the paperwork, but this is the family line I have researched so far:

Joseph Emerson m. Had 2 children:
1. Charles Alvin Emerson (1856-1939) m. Della Blodgett (1859- , Beloit WI)
Charles and Della had 2 children:
1.
The Emersons will make you crazy. There were Emerson's in Ontario in the 1800's who came from Flamborough, East Yorkshire, England to Canada. These are my Emerson's. My Great grandmother, Ameilia Emerson, was born in Ontario and Emigrated to Wisconsin in 1889.

There is also the Ralph Waldo Emerson's who came to new England in the 1700's or 1600's. As you mentioned, there are Emerson's from Ireland and then there is the two "m" Emmerson's which appear to be the same family.

To make matters worse, many many of these are named Robert and in the 1800's, non-related Emerson's started naming their kids Ralph Waldo. Good Luck !

Since my last post in February 2011 I have traveled back to Waupaca, Wis., and out to Little Falls, Minn. There is a file on some of the Emersons at the Morrison County Historical Society that includes a printout of this passenger list of the ship Sesosthis of the J. J. Cooke line in 1847:

http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/qu_seth1847.shtml

This shows the entire Emerson group traveling apparently from Londonderry to Quebec. It said they were from Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, which was welcome and new information for me. Someone (not sure who) hand-wrote a note that the family's mother, Isabella, died en route.

Anyone who is connected to these Emersons is very welcome to contact me.

Scott Leonard
Washington, D.C.

2nd Lt. Robert S. Emerson of Norway, Maine, WWII MIA Identified
IMMEDIATE RELEASE	No. 539-11
June 22, 2011
Airmen Missing In Action from WWII Identified

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that the remains of five Army Air Forces servicemen, missing in action from World War II, have been identified and returned to their families for burial with full military honors.

2nd Lt. Robert S. Emerson, Norway, Maine, will be buried July 9 in his hometown.

On April 3, 1945, Orcutt and his crew took off in their B-25J Mitchell bomber from Palawan Field, Philippines. The pilot of another aircraft in the flight reported seeing Orcutt's plane stall out and crash about one mile northeast of the village of Consolacion in a swampy area. There were no survivors.

In early 1947, personnel from the Army's Graves Registration Service recovered additional remains from the crash site and buried them as unknowns in Leyte, Philippines. Later that year, they were exhumed and transferred to Manila for possible identification. In 1949, a military review board declared these unknown group remains to be those of the aircrew and re-buried them at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo.

Two years later, the Graves Registration Service returned to the crash site and recovered additional remains. The case was reanalyzed and a recommendation was made that the group remains at Jefferson Barracks be disinterred for individual identification. All remains from the crash site were examined with no resulting identification. They were reburied at the same location. A sister of one of the airmen contacted the Army in 2001 upon learning of the recovery of additional remains in the 1950s. The Army then disinterred the group remains at Jefferson Barracks in 2008 which were taken to the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) in Hawaii for identification.

Among forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC used dental comparisons and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory used mitochondrial DNA -- which matched that of relatives of the aircrew -- in the identification of these airmen.

At the end of the war, the U.S. government was unable to recover and identify approximately 79,000 Americans. Today, more than 73,000 are unaccounted-for from the conflict.

For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO website at http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo or call 703-699-1169.

U.S. Department of Defense
Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Public Affairs)

http://www.defense.gov/releases/release.aspx?releaseid=14595

******************
Posted for genealogical information only. I have no additional information. If you have a question or can add more information regarding this person please post it here on the message board.
