My Dad's (Raymond Alfred Emms) had cousins that were from Ideal, Manitoba. Their names I am familiar with are Jos and Allan, but I know there were many other people in the family. My brother, Thomas Alexander Emms, born in Winnipeg on August 22, 1951 was good friends with one of their sons. The person I am talking about passed away at an early age, (I can't remember his name).

I can also remmber about a young man that was stolen by the gypsies wayt back - which may be the person you memntion as being abduceted. I have no knowledge of them. I remember hearing about that as a little girl.

My paternal Grandfather was Alexander Emms who married Ethel Jeffery in the early 1900's. They had four daughters, Emma, Annie, Mary and Winnie, and four sons, Gordon, Maurice, Raymond and Robert. Raymond was my dad.

If I can be further help please let me know.

I have just started to research my mothers family and her grandmother was Elizabeth Emms (nee Light) she married a Charles Emms who I believe came from Norfolk - they had 10 children including my maternal grandmother - 5 were born in Cairo. Does that cross over anything that you have found?

Hi Angela
My family has moved about quite a bit. I was born in Romford, Essex 1963. We then moved to Southend on Sea, then onto the Isle of Wight, then to Chichester and I now live in Fordingbridge in Hampshire. My mother Joan (Harry's daughter)lives with me and is now 81. She has talked about her Aunt Ada but her memory is fading fast.I don't really know much about my Grandfather except that he used to work down Spitalfields Meat Market. He then bought a farm in Debden, Essex where he lived during the war.I'm not very sure how we are related. Does this make us second cousins?

Hi Lucy

Your Harry may well be the Uncle Harry my dad spoke of quite a bit. I have a tree on genesreunited that shows a couple of ancestors. Haven't been doing much over the past couple of years but have made contact with a few other Emms family members on that site. Where do you live? Not stalking - honest! Just interested to see where families end up. I live in Enfield, North London.

Hello, I have seen your request for information into the Crookbain family. My Grandfather was William ?George Crookbain. Born in 1898, believed to have been born in Bethnal Green. He had a brother called Henry George. My mother who is his daughter, remembers an Uncle George but they had a stepfather....name not known yet. He had sons: William,Walley, and Clewyn and daughters: Susan, Mary, Louise and Kathleen.
My Mother reckons that there is a Huguenot connection but doesn't know where.
Chris Hepden

Hi,

I am trying to find the parents of Thomas Emms b c 1819 said to have been in Ireland, who arrived in Australia prior to 1845 when he married Janet Stuart in Sydney. He died in Rutherglen Victoria in 1898. No information on his parentage is on any of the relevant certificates.

His children's names in order of birth were:
James, Thomas Whiteway, Jane Stuart, Annie Frances, Mary Henrietta, William Henry, Margaret.

Do these names mean anything to you?

Hi, Gayle,
I only have a little more information. I have the Willings on the 1861 census in Nottawasga. Their name is spelled "Willings". Besides Nathaniel & Sarah, there are Thomas 13, Sarah 11, Elizabeth 8 and Matilda 3. I have the 1881 census but could not find them. On the 1891 census, Elizabeth is living with her parents. On the 1901census they are in Oro-- Nathaniel is 80- b. Sept 26 1820, Sarah 78- b. Nov 10 1822, Joseph N. 37- b. July 3 1863, Elizabeth Emms 40- b. July 22 1860 & Thomas James, a grandson age 21- b. Aug 7 1879.
I found the inscription for Nathaniel's & Sarah's stone. They are buried in Bethsaida Congregational Church Cemetery, Edgar, ON --Lot 10, Con. 3--Plot 37. It simply gives their names & dates-- for Nathaniel Sept. 26, 1820-July 29, 1902 & sarh Sept. 20, 1825 -Jan. 9, 1909.

David Silvester/Sylvester Emms, who married Minnie Ida Potter was born in 1869 in Oro, ON. (He was the son Of David & Mary Emms.) I found them with a son, William, on the 1891 census for the township of Oro, Division # 3, Page 45, Line 13.
On the 1901 census he is living with 2 of his brothers & a sister in Oro, in Simcoe East. Here he is listed as Sylvester. Neither Minnie or William are listed so she must have died before this time. David remarried in 1905.
Hope this helps.

Please note that I am not interested in the Emms surname except to the extent that I am looking for a David Emms, presumably of Simcoe County, ON. married to Minnie Ida Potter as per the Online Ontario Marriages Website info that is as follows.

011162-90 David S. Emms, 21, Oro, same, Farmer, s/o David & Mary Emms, married Minnie Ida Potter, 18, Oro, Tay, Widow, Jeremiah & Elizabeth Potter, wtn: Grace & M. Johnson, both of Orillia, on July 8, 1890, at Orillia.

In respect to this, I couldn't find any David Emms on the 1881 census for Simcoe County, Ontario and I am wondering if someone can advise me as to where I might find him on that census and under what name if different. (My real interest is simply to find out when and where Minnie Ida Potter died although the death date of her husband would be of interest as well.)

Randall V. Sisson

Edith Mary Emms Bible, HELP!!

I live in Texas, spent the day shopping the local Goodwill store for history books. I came across a small Bible, appears to be Seventh Day Advent. On the inside front cover is written:
Edith Mary Emms
19 Bedford Road
Salisbury Hill or Mills.

The preface of the page is no longer there, so I have no idea as to the date of this Bible. On the New Testament page it shows to be published:
OXFORD:
Printed At The University Press.
Cum Privileg10.

The Bible is approx. 3x5 and embossed on the front:
Holy Bible
Society For Promoting Christian Knowledge.
It is in excellent condition, other than the Preface page missing.
It was apprently read by the owner as there are marks in pencil though out the Bible.

I could not stand the thought of leaving the Bible on the shelf to gather dust, so I purchased it. . I just wish I had more information to go on to determine her idenity. I've read posting on Rootsweb and Gencircles and found a couple of mentions of a Edith Mary Emms. SSDI list a Edith Emms who died in 1971 in Michigan. I don't know if this is her Bible or not. I'm grasping at straws.

I really would appreciate any help in locating somebody that would teasure the Bible as much as I treasure my own Family Bibles.

All I ask is reimbursement for what I paid for it and cost of shipping it to whom ever is proven to be the rightful owner. I thought about E-Bay, but honestly, I'm not that sort of person to Auction off family heirlooms, even when they are not my own.
