I'm looking for information on Perry Emory born about 1825 in Queen Anne's County, Maryland. I'm pretty sure he is the father of my great, great grandfather Arthur Wells Emory (born about 1856). My goal is to link onto this family tree http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op....

The name "Emmorey" goes at least back to the birth my ancestor William Emmorey, b 1788, New York, my 3rd Great Grandfather. His tombstone and childrens official records spell it correctly. However census takers, border crossings and other records are incorrect with Emery, Emory, Emmory, etc being prominent. From my personal experience, it has been a constant fight with my records to keep the spelling correct. I, however, can find no records for William that predates his birth.

My Great Great Grandfather David Emory, Emery, Hembree used Emory in the 1865 time frame, he used Emery also until about 1900's then it seems the spelling changed to Hembree. He lived in DeKalb,Montgomery and Stewart counties in Tennessee. I don't know why other than possibly the record keepers. But his descendants seemed to fairly stick with the Hembree spelling.

I know that the Emory's and the Hembree's are related, but my question is where does the confusion end? When did people start using the name Emory and when did they start using the name of Hembree? I have alot of Hembree's, Embry's, Embrie's, and then I have even seen the name of Amory, but to be honest it's a little confusing? Can someone please tell me when the name of Emory was used and when did they start using the name of Hembree?

Thanks In Advance,
K. Chris Vickery

My paternal grandmother's maiden name was Emory. I was told by her while she was still living that at the point that the family came over from England is when the name changed. There were siblings in the same family that had their last names spelled either Emery or Emory, depending on how it was spelled when the arrived. From the way she told the story, it seemed to be dependent on the person who wrote their names on the rolls on the East Coast. She always said that if we met someone with the last name of Emery, they could be related to us, but it would be pretty far back in the family line if they were.

Dear Ann,
Edith Mary Nesbitt Moss married 1stly: Captain John Leslie Green, Royal Army Medical Corps, who won a posthumous VC during the First World War. They married on 1 January 1916 and he was killed in action on 1 July 1917. She remarried your William Hemsley Emory in 1919 and I have lost the trail thereafter. It seems she joined the RAMC and became a Colonel.
We would be very grateful for any help you can provide on William Emory and Edith Moss.
Could you please supply me with your current email address.
Best wishes,
Doug
I first came online in 1994. At that time my first research experience was my faternal line so it was about 1996 or '97 before I began the internet research on the Hembree/Emory family I'd begun 25 years earlier. One of my first contacts was Dale Standifer in Oregon. One of the things he told me was of his family history that had said the beginnings of the Hembree/Emory family was William & Mary. I noted the oral history as such. A couple of years later I was contacted by a gentleman named Larry Petrisky from Connecticut at that time. He didn't know Dale then. His oral family history that had been passed down to him was that the family had first begun in this country with a man named William and his wife Mary. I noted the oral history. About 2002 I reestablished contact with a cousin I hadn't seen if many years named Margaret Harris in southeast Tennessee. We were discussing the family one day when she told me that her Uncle John Hembree had told her that the family tradition was that it had begun with William & Mary. My eyebrows raised. Now, I know this isn't positive documentation...but how can you take three people one in Oregon, one in Conn. and one in Tennessee...none of which knew the other...and all have the same, exact story...then just discount it? So while it might not ever be documented to your standards I will state that I believe that Abraham and Drewey were indeed children of William and Mary Emory. Too many other factors point to it to discount it.
