I am looking for more Civil War info on my 3x great grandfather Charles Karl Engel who was born in Germany in 1829 and died I assume in Pennsylvania in 1901. I found a buriel record on him and a Civil War registration book with his name in it. He married Mary Agold in 1850. Their daughter, my 2x great grandmother Anna Theresia Engel married Mark Eiswerth.

Hi

I found your post about the Engle Family. Is this the family who lived in Berks and Northumberland Counties, PA?

My 3rd great-grandmother Margaret Engle, who married John RIDER of Germany.
Both were from Northumberland Co., PA and later moved to Jefferson/Harrison Counties in Ohio.

I have Valentine ENGLE 1781 - 1848 and Margaret HEIM 1782 - 1859. I think Valentine is her brother.

Margaret and John's first child was born 1815, so their years of birth would have been prior to 1775, and that would make Margaret older than Valentine

It is thru their son George RIDER and his wife Katheine CULP who I descend from.

Please contact. Thanks!

Edward and Florence both passed away by 1964 so I am unable to ask them any questions. Please respond to this message on here or my private email if you even THINK you have any leads.
Re: Joe(Curly) Engel, cowboy singer from Brooklyn 1930s

Hello Steve -- Wow -- I had almost given up on ever tracking anything more down on Joe Engel. As you can see by the date of my original message board post, it's been a long time, and I know now that he was still living when I wrote that post back in 2003.
I've been digging into the history of the western/western swing bands of the 1930s-50s for many years and have written a lot about it, too -- sleeve notes to CDs, articles, etc. I'm a big fan of Texas Jim Lewis & his Lone Star Cowboys, so I've been familiar with your father's singing for a long time and have written about the band on several occasions, including a CD a couple years back on the BACM label (a historical CD reissue label issued by the British Archive Of Country Music) that was devoted to the band during the period your father was in it.
I have, as far as I know, ever recording he made with band, as well as several excerpts from live radio broadcasts. I even have a poor copy of a 1937 movie short the band did with your father in it. I'd be very pleased to share anything with you that you don't have.
As to what I'd like to know -- Well, I know very little about him, so almost anything you can tell me would be great. I found a possible reference to him working with a Major Bowes troupe prior to his joining the Lone Star Cowboys, but I wasn't able to verify if it was correct. Other than that, I know he was with Lewis & the Cowboys during 1937-38 period and I have a reference to him working with the Radio Rubes, a New York-based western/country band in 1940. Other than that, and Lewis' description of him as the "Brooklyn cowboy", I know nothing. I'd love to know his background, how he moved toward yodelling and western music (I'm particularly curious if his stints with western bands were just jobs to him or it he really loved the style and sang that sort of material and yodelled because he really loved it?).
So I'd love to know what you know about his career prior to 1936 or so, and after 1940, and what he did in later years, etc. I only have one photo from that time, do you have much in the way of photos from his musical career? Or other material related to it?
And of course, I'd love to have general biographical details -- where and when born, background, etc.
I hope I haven't written too much here. Thanks very much for getting in touch with me, and I hope to hear more from you. Thanks again & take care -- if you prefer to write me via regular e-mail, that address is kevcof@aol.com

Hi there
My Engels were also originally from Germany and went to Russia, somewhere around Odessa, or Bessarabia near the black sea is what I believe. My grandparents John and Pauline Engel emigrated to Canada with their son Fred. They homesteaded in Eastern Alberta, and had two more sons; Arthur (my father) and David, and as well a daughter Hilda. I remember as a small boy going to Dakota with my grandmother and parents to visit a relative of hers. There were also two brothers of John who came to Canada after the war. Jacob and Adolf. My father pieced together quite a file prior to his death 3 years ago and was able to go back to the early 1700's. How I wish he could have dug into the internet!

My husband and I are looking for the Engel(Engle) family that were left at the St. Vincents orphanage in the 1940's(ish). Barbara Ann Engel, Kenneth Engel, Thomas Engel, Richard Engel, and Gary Lee Engel. My father in law is Larry Engle. He wasn't sure of the spelling of his last name, and spells it this way, but every record I can find spells the last names Engel. Their parents were Frank and Florence. Any information anyone has would be greatly appreciated.
My husband is related to Frieda Engel (grandmother) and Karl August Engel (great-grandfather).

Frieda Engel married George Frederick Clayden. They had two children: 1. Anna Clayden and 2. George Frederick Clayden. Frieda died when Anna was young--I believe it was sometime around 1920. I have found no details about Frieda such as birth, marriage or death dates. Anna told me her mother's name was Frieda M. Engel and her grandfather was Gus Engel.

Do you have any information about Frieda? Anna Clayden married Patrick F. Doran in June 1931. Anna Clayden Doran was born on January 1, 1914 and her brother, George Frederick Clayden was born in 1910.

Anna had two children. Frank R. Doran (my husband) and James Patrick Doran (now deceased).

Thanks for any help you can provide about Frieda and her ancestors.
Dorothy Gainer Doran

Hi, I've been reading the posts about "Friedrich" and also saw that you have a cousin named Mike Engel. Since that's my name (Michael Engel) as well, I am curious to find out who is your cousin. In reading the family history my dad wrote I know that my great great great grandfather and his father were both named Friedrich Engel, not likely the one you asked about though since their dates are: Friedrich (I think Leopold) Engel 1792-1846 and Friedrich Wilhelm Engel (11815-1886). The latter's son Julius is my great great grandfather but I'm wondering if he also may have had a son Friedrich. I will continue to research this and will let you know if I find anything.

Curiously, where I grew up in rural Wisconsin there was another Engel family who lived on the farm up the road who were not directly related to us, but no doubt from some earlier branch of the family.

Nice to make your acquaintance,

Mike

Hi, I know that my grandpa's uncle Henry lived in Lincoln for awhile and then moved to CO and I believe that he died there....not sure what year though. I know that Fredrich Engel married Katherine Krott/Groth and his brothers all married her sisters in Sartov Russia. Her father was a Dr. Krott? I do know that some of our extended, extended family spell their name ENGLE and not ENGEL. Very exciting! I am calling my grandpa right now to let him know what I found.
My dad said we, too, may be related to Engle's that lived in Colorado and perhaps WY. I will try to attach a brief tree to see if this gets any response or help! I will do this in the next post.

Let me know if we are able to help one another out or if we are family! : D

Thanks
Blessings

Kari P
