Hello Edwin, My name is Marilyn Page Reagan and I noticed that we must be related today, when I saw you were interested in the Jane Page Letters posted on my Site and also you have the David Page lines in you Tree !!! That is great !!! I do so appreciate that there are others working on this line...
I must ask you to edit James Page, which you have born in Geneva Co., Ala and his death in Lousiana. Several years ago, there were some very interested Pages that couldn't find the James Page they were looking fo rand they adopted our James Page. Our James was born in Benton Co., Alabama and accordindg to Jane Page, herself, in the letters that you just uploaded toyour tree, that Jim is in the Indian "Nation", Oklahoma, in the first letter and in the second he is in Grayson Co., Texas.

Please change your Tree to reflect this. I have been working on this line for 50 years and I am trying to get everyone to be on the same page !!!

How are you related to the Pages? I don't know if you looked at the others pictures on line, but there is a picture of the Old Page Cabin and the Rock marking the place that David was buried after he was shot by the Federals, which Jan tells about in her letter. !!!

I would love to hear from you,and if I can help in any way, please don't hesitate to ask.
I, too, am an Ensign descendant. In Searching for a Reul Ensign who is buried in Enfield, Conn. I found your post. If possible, can you check out the books you have for either Reul(tombstone) or Rueul. He died in 1843. There is no birth listed and so far I cannot find out any info on him. What upsets me most is that I lived there for over 20 years and never knew another Ensign had lived in that town.

I will really appreciate anything you might have.
Gail Colmer

SeekingMichigan.org has death certificates online 1897 - 1920. Several members with Ensign connections to Joel Root Ensign and Sabra Smith, as noted on page 363 of the first book, can be found there.

We discovered this as we are trying to locate burials in an 'abandoned' cemetery in Tuscola County, Michigan.
Anson Ensign in regards to Hiriam Ensign and Amelia Ostrander

Like many, I had the error of labeling Anson as the son of Hiriam and Amelia via ancestral files posted. When the error was brought up, I looked closer and could find no real connection. Betty states the mis-information is wide spread and may not be able to be corrected. I am taking the liberty (may she forgive me) of posting the emailed comments in hopes of helping Betty and other researchers sort out the tangled yarn of Anson Ensign and Francis Town:
Kathryn- I want to thank you for answering my e-mail so quickly.
I have been doing family searching for about 50 years and have written several books on the many lines of my and my husbands ancestry.

Anson Ensign that married Frances Eliza Town, is not the son of Hiram and Amelia (Ostrander) Ensign, as reported in many sites. He is the son of Anson & Sarah (Cobb) Ensign and a grandson of Zerah & Sarah (Hayden) Ensign. All the info on Rootsweb.com is correct from David-B-1644, to Anson Ensign- B-1803, Kent Co. MI. They only had one child who was named Anson, also.

Anson Ensign is the son of Zerah & Sarah (Hayden) Ensign, he was born in 1803 in Kent County, Michigan. He married Sarah Cobb the 6 November 1833 at Romulus, Wayne County, Michigan.
Anson and Sarah had one child named Anson as well.
Anson's first marriage was to Frances Eliza Town, daughter of Fredrick and Mary Town. It took place the 6 November 1853 at Nankin, Michigan.
Anson & Eliza (as she was called) Ensign had seven children, their names were Maria-B- 1857, Hiram-B-1858/61, Eugene-B-1862, Dora-B- 1866, Isabelle- B- 1868, Cannie-B-1871, and
Rosa-B- 1873.
I have birth certificates for four of the children as well as two marriage certificates.

Eugene Ensign was my great grandfather.

The 1870 census for Paynesville, Minnesota, has the family of Anson and Eliza Ensign.

Anson and Eliza divorced about April 1876. Eliza married for a second time to A.J. Hadden, she also had one more child named Dolly May Hadden.
Anson married again, it took place 23 April 1876 at Wayne Co. Michigan, to Sarah (Seucrsia) Cutler. Sarah had been married before and had two sons Herbert and Edmond. Anson and Sarah had two daughters, but I only have the first ones name Delila-B about 1879.

I am sorry that this e-mail is so long, but I am trying to explain the situation with Anson Ensign 11. I have two books named "Ensigns In America" and find that the info in there is only partly correct.

Some how I would sure like to see the family of Anson and Eliza Ensign corrected. Possibly it is too big of a problem to change. Right now I am not a member of Ancestry, I wanted to take a break from a lot of research, but think I am going to have to re-join soon.

I have two of the "Ensigns In America" books and the info that was given about Hiram and Amelia (Ostrander) Ensign is all mixed up in book Volume 3. I am surprised about why it was mixed up as the submitters were the grandson of Hiram.
If the line of ancestry goes Seymour, Hiram, Hiram, then it is the wrong Hiram. The Hiram that is the father of Albert Lehman Ensign is Hiram the son of Anson & Eliza (Town) Ensign. This Hiram was born about 1859/61 possibly Yellowhead Twp., Kankakee Co. Illinois, and it is possible that place is from the other Hiram. He also had a sister older than him named Maria, and he had one brother younger and four sisters.

Hiram's younger brother Eugene is my gr. grandfather, I have been lucky enough to have a lot of family input with my side of the Ensigns.

Hiram had just two children Albert and Elsie, but he had many grandchildren, Albert had 12 children and Elsie had 12 children also after two marriages.

I have found a lot of the info on the internet as well in the Ensign book, to be incorrect.

Hope you can straighten out the mystery regarding the Hiram Ensign family.

(Added in later) I forgot to say that info in the books about Anson Ensign Sr., having a son and two daughters is incorrect. He only had one son they named Anson Jr. The two daughters they mention are the daughters of Anson Jr. and his second marriage to Sarah Cutler. I hope I didn't add more confusion.

Thanking you again
Betty Cannady
I was told that there is a geneaology library in the basement of the superior court building there that lists his descendants all the way down to my father, William George Webster and his sister Shirley Jean Webster.

Ron,

You're so right. I make mistakes, as much as anyone. Many times, things are handed down to us, and have gotten a little skewed, through time. And there are sometimes important facts, omitted in the oral histories, of our families. For instance, it was told that one of my grand uncles often bragged that he was the "baby," of the family. It turns out that there was a girl, younger than he, and I found her on the 1900 Census record. It is rather amazing, that we had never heard of her. She was a late in life child and possibly suffered from a birth defect that the family wanted kept quiet.

And then there was a tale of my great great grandpa, fleeing Mississippi, because he wife tried to poison him twice. One tale had it that he died before he could get out of the state and one that he went directly to Central Louisiana. In fact, he went to Southwest Louisiana, where I found him on the 1860 Census.

Sorry about rambling. I just want to help, anyone, in anyway that I can. That being because I've gotten so very much help, with my families, from other folks. I've worked, gratis, for a lot of people, to get their documentation.

Thank you,

Ethel

First of all, I agree with your analysis of published genealogies. Lots of mistakes. But--that's what makes genealogy fun!!

It was my grandmothre (quoted in the Ensign book) that said Torrenson married Mary Muncy. I can find no evidence of this. Comparing the dates of birth of the children with other information, I don't see how he could have.

The Brace Ensign you found in the 1870 census is William Brace Ensign. Also included on the census is his wife, Mary Helen Tilden Ensign and some of their children.

William Brace Ensign was a son of Torresmon and his wife, Sarah Nichols Ensign. He was apparently named after Sarah's grandfather, William Brace.

I have lots of info on all this. Contact me at rondh@cox.net if you would like to exchange info.

Ron

I think I did not reply to your e-mail, so thought I had better do it so you know I did get your message. My grandfather George Ensign is in book 111,but there are many mistakes in his history as well as my gr. grandfather Eugene Ensign and his father Anson Ensign. Anson is on page 97 &98 in Vol.111, Eugene is in Vol. 111 page 140 # E151. his ancestral line is mostly wrong. then my grandfather is on page 532 of Vol. 111. My mother is his daughter, Fern (Ensign) Russell. My line is Fern 11, George 10, Eugene 9, Anson 8, Anson 7, Zerah 6, Otis 5, Eliphalet 4, David 3, David 2, James 1. If there is anything you would like to know that I amy have please feel free to e-mail me at r.cann@shaw.ca
Betty Cannady

Hello,

As I stated, in an earlier post, a few years back, I studied the Ensign family, for some friends. I had access to one of the volumes of the Ensign series and found a few times that the information didn't agree with other documentation. I'm not being critical of the great work, of the authors of these books, as I've found errors in any such works.

I found Torenson/Torrismon D./T.D. Ensign, on the 1840; 1850; and 1860 Census. They are as follows:

1840 New York Livingston County Leiscester Township

Torrisman D. Ensign: males: 3=under age 5; 1 male=age 30-40. Females: 1=age 20-30.

1850 New York,

Thilman (sic) D. Ensign 48 occupation: Cooper born Massachusetts
Sarah 35 b: N.Y.
William B. 15
Henry H. 10
David W. 7
Elizabeth A. 2

1860 New York, Livingston North Danville

T. D. Ensign 55 New York
Sarah 39? New York
William B. 29 occupation: Printer/painter [somewhat difficult to read]
Henry H. 20
David W. 16
Elizabeth A. 12
Emily J. 9
Mary C. 4

Note: Now, if Torrenson married 2) Mary Munson, then he and Sarah must have gotten divorced, between 1860-1870. I base this on the following: in 1870, Sarah is living without a husband, in New York, Livingston, Dansville. She is age 50. With her is son David age 23 a boatman and daughter Mary age 13, in school.

Now, I find something interesting in the following two records.

1870 New York, Livingston Dansville

Brace Ensign 34 Carpenter born N.Y.
Mary 28
Ida 4
Charles 3
Elizabeth 2
Grant 1

1880 New York, Livingston Dansville

Brace 55 NY
Mary 40
Cora 10
Minnie 4
Lula 2
Flora 6 months

Are these two, the same family? If so, where are the children, in 1870, since some, would still be underage and Grant only 11?

Ethel

You must have been looking at Volume 111 of the book, as it has Section 1V, Appendix. The William I had looked up in the two books was William Brace Ensign. When you typed in the person you are trying to find, Elizabeth "Betsy" Brace, I didn't know if you meant Elizabeth "Betsy" Ensign, daughter of William Brace Ensign. The William that I looked up was born in 1835, and had one daughter named Stella Elizabeth, born 1868, Dansville, N.Y. Could she be the one your looking for?
Betty. my e-mail address is r.cann@shaw.ca

Barbara:

Several years ago, I found one of the Ensign books on the internet. I don't know if it was book 1, 2, or 3, but it was called "Ensigns In America". The website was "GenealogyLibrary.com and was associated with Family Tree Maker. It was free at the time, but not any longer.

The data I had came from Section 4, Appendix, of whatever book it was. Page numbers were 525 and above. I don't if these were page numbes from the book, or were created by Genealogy.com

In any event, that is where I got the family reference numbers from.

You mentioned that you have been researching William Brace. Which one? I'm VERY interested in the one that is sometimes referred to as the Lieutnant. I'd be very interested in exchanging information with you. I'm looking for a source connecting him with his daughter (maybe), Elizabeth Betsey Brace. I decend from her and her husband, John Nichols.

You can contact me off site at rondh@cox.net

Thanks.

Ron Hughes

Nita- i just want to be sure I am following the correct family as you only put down one David and one Datus, but I think your lines goes as follows.
James (1), David (2) David (3) Datus (4) Datus (5) Seymour (6) Robert (7) Francis (8) Manley (9). is this correct, let me know so I can be sure I have the correct line.
Betty My e-mail address is r.cann@shaw.ca

Betty:

Thanks for your kind offer regarding look-ups in the Ensign books. I was not aware of a vol II and III.

In Vol I, the author listed Ensign families not yet connected to the James Ensign line. One such review was attributed to my Grandmother, Jennie Mable Ensign Brooks, daughter of William Brace Ensign. His father was Torrison deLos Ensign.

It would be greatly appreciated if you would let me know if this line is mentioned in Vol II and/or III.

The appendix listed the following:
3E2 J. M. Brooks (should have been W. R. Brooks)

3E59h. Jennie Mable Ensign, of Oswego, Oswego, NY. Should have been Owego, Tioga, NY. (She was my grandmother, and I know she never lived in Oswego. She lived next door to my parents in Owego).

3E29 Harold Ensign. He was Jennie Ensign's nephew (3E59h)

3E58 Torrence/Torrison Ensign. He was Jennie Ensign's Grandfather (3E59h)

3E60 William Brace Ensign. He was Jennie Ensign's father.

and on it goes.

Ron Hughes
rondh@cox.net

Ken,

The death certificate, is, I believe that of Samuel Ensign, younger brother of Abner Ensign, born about 1840. Also, one has to back up the information on death certificates, with other documentation. As in the case of one of my husband's grandmothers, where her name is incorrect. This being due to human error. In 1900, a Samuel Ensign, age 55 born March 1845 [again be open minded about these records] in Ohio, parents born NY; NY. With him is his sister, Artemesia Reynolds and husband Albert Reynolds. I am convinced that these, along with Abner are children of Samuel and "Betsey" Ensign, listed in 1850, in Ohio. I did have a lot of information, on this family but gave it to family members.

Hope this helps. Happy researching.

Ethel Coody
