Re: Abraham Erickson of Sweden

Iam Becky, daughter of Elmer, son of Charles, son of Abraham. I think that your father must have been John Wesley Erickson, your mother Beatrice Davis, and that you are facebook friend. Your sisters are Nancy and Ann, and brothers are John Jr. and William (Billy). Your Uncle Leonard Died recently in Florida.

My Ancestry family is current, but past the generation of ours I am short on concrete information. Nellie Herman gave Abraham's trunk to her daughter Hazel and she cleaned my Grandmothers house for many years. Grandma Erickson was blind and Charles was crippled due to a logging accident.

I knew that Abraham had Sweden because of some mistreatment, and have found a couple of family lines that look as if they are at least connected to Abraham's sibs. I had heard the his brother had come looking for him, and weather they had connected or not I do not know.

One of your brothers and a Werner maintain the cemetery off of Miller and Port Orieda roads in the Sleeping Bear Natl. Park. But I have not been successful in connecting with him.

It is difficult to trace much family in Sweden as many sons and daughters Surnames depended on their fathers first name. Also daughters surnames were sometimes a combination of fathers first name and ending in "dotter". Some parts of Sweden all first names of children the same but middle names different.

My mother was a Lautner which proved much easier as someone had already collected a family record. All though there are so many of them that have the same first names that it can be confusing. I have tried to include all the sibs in families where I can. So others can sometimes find their roots.

I my roots there are Eitzens, Inmans, Wellers, Warners, and on mom's side Lautners, Carpenters,Hermans, mostly in Leelanau County. I have been looking for Hockeborns, Elsners, for sometime now.

Now that the 1940 census is up I have found of my parents generation recently.

Re: Abraham Erickson of Sweden

I am Janet, daughter of John, son of William, son of Abraham, son of Erik. What I have been told by my father is that Abraham fled Sweden because as a laborer he had to kiss the boot of the land owner when he got his pay and he would not do so and hence the message that we do not "kiss the boot". He supposedly had brothers left in Sweden. One may have come through Michigan and was seen at the train station in Traverse City. Most if not all of Abraham's grandchildren have passed and hence knowledge of his birthplace (somewhere near Stockholm). His daughter Nellie had his trunk from Sweden and gave it to one of her daughters who sold it. Oh, Catharine's maiden name was Werner. Abraham came in 1871, got off a ship that transported lumber to Chicago at Good Harbor Bay. He then ran to Leland and filed a homestead claim.

My father in law is Arthur Maurice - I wonder if they are related somehow - that's not a very common name! I know he wouldn't be one of his aunts or uncles - but the right age to be - so maybe a cousin to his dad - who is also Arthur Erickson born 1903 (middle name Walfrid) they lived in the Red Lake area - but later moved to Plummer, MN. They have many, many relatives in that area!

Lidquist) and the Meeker county historical album indicates she was a resident in 1888 but I can't seem to find her.

Let me know if you stumble across anything in this area.

Again Thanks.

One sister, Johanna emigrated with her brother August and is assumed to have settled in Brocton area but we lose track of her after that. Wondering if this might be a connection.

Nice when you can get someone in the family tree corroborate some of the information greatly increasing the confidence.

Do you have any information on Johan E. Lidquists' wife? Do you have access to Johan's or his wifes or his brothers obituaries? My Swedish records point towards towards one person but other family trees show a similar name but different birth date.

I encourage you to take a look at the Album of Meeker County history as it gives a biographical sketch on both August and Andrew and many other early residents of meeker county. Andrews last name was changed from Erickson to Lee, which I have since learned from another ancestry tree. Hope this helps.

Yes, I do have a tree, but have kept it private. I don't have any documents or pictures on it. I'm still kind of learning my way around the ancestry site. I'd be happy to scan the death cert for you. How shall I get it to you?

August came thru the Jamestown area as well. He was married in Brocton, Ny. If you google Albumn of Meeker County History, then August Erickson you will find a really beautiful book on meeker county history. You can browse the book at National Archives website. Also Andrew erickson Lee is in this book.

I noted on one of the passenger lists that August has a companion with him...Johanna. Is this his sister?

I'm so happy to finally confirm August parents names and that they match fairly closely with what is stated on his death cert. I've been confused by this as I've seen other names as well.

Thanks...

I have August Erickson's death cert which lists his parents as Erick Erickson and Helen ?.
I've also seen on another ancestry tree his (August) parents listed as Anders Paulsen Erichsen (1809-1862) and Bodel Marie Nisdr Lund (1809-?).
My August Erickson's birth date is oct.4, 1851. August farmed in greenleaf along with his brothers John and Andrew. Looks like you did a lot of research to find out much about the ericksons in Sweden. Pink zinnia

Have you been able to find out anything more of your James Buford Yates? I believe his father, John J. Yates, was the brother of my gggrandfather, William Weslely Yates. William Wesley's parents were John j. Yates and Ann Yates, enumerated in NC in 1850 and were in Kemper Co. prior to 1870 where they were enumerated in the 1870 census record. John J. Jr. had a brother and and sister-in-law living in the household in Jones Co. in 1880, James Thomas and Amanda. I found a J.T. Yates and Mandy Yates in Texas in later census records with the same personal info as the James and Amanda (same age and places of birth) with John J. Yates in Jones Co., MS. Their older children were born in MS, one child in OK and then the rest in TX. Don't know if this is the same person but it is interesting.

He emigrated to America about 1873 aand settled in Meeker county Minnesota. He adopted a child from the Stockholm orphanage in around 1870- her name was Johanna Sofia Rosenberg. She emigrated about 1875. When she grew up, she married Andrew Peter Melander in Litchfield, Meeker County, Minnesota around 1885. I'm trying to find information on John once he got to Minnesota- was he married, etc.

I am Hulda's granddaughter, Stephanie Nelson Schmit (my father is Gordon Victor Nelson - Hulda's son).
I just started work online @ ancestry.com last year. Just this week also made a connection with Shirley Erickson Peterson (daughter of Walter Erickson with his second wife).

I know this is an old post but hopefully you are still online and we could connect more of the family. Am copying below information Shirley just sent me.
Yes, the
Erickson tree is rather dead end. I will have to share the information that
I have and probably you have most of the same. I saw ( and I don't know how
to get back to it, that someone had added the picture of the two older
sibling and the younger three along with the stern Andrew and Anna on
Ancestry.com. In my research Anna has gone by several different names. Her
records in Sweden are Anna Marie and I have seen here in the US as Mary Ann,
Anna M, and just plain Marie. The marriage license in Chisago County has her
as Mary BERG. I don't know where the Berg came from, maybe they
misunderstood her or if she had to write her name the e and o were kind of
alike. Everything I have seen has her as Borg in the US. Actually her name
in Sweden was Anna Marie Hakansdotter. I researched and found that she had a
grandfather that had the last name of Borg and that's maybe why she took the
name of Borg in the US. Seems like that was common practice to change name
when the Swedes came to the US which makes researching family trees so
difficultYes, my dad was the nursing baby and that is the only thing that
saved his life.My brother Rollin while he was still alive, my sister and I
place a memorial stone at the Fish Lake Baptist cemetery for the six aunts
and uncles the passed away so suddenly.
The copy I have is terrible. I can try to get a better one next time I am in Rock Springs, here's what I have:

Instanly Killed by Fall of Rock in Mine.

Instant death from a fall of rock
while working in Mine No# 4 of the
Union Pacific Coal company was the
fate meted out to Carl W. Erickson
Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock.
Mr. Erickson was following his regu
lar vocation as a coal miner when he
was suddenly engulfed in about fifty
tons of coal and rock, and it took a
force of workmen three hours to ex
tricate his bady from under the huge
mass of coal. Death was instantan
eous, as were a leg and several other
bones in his body mashed to a pulp.
Charles Ratkaj, a fellow compan
ion and working partner, fled when he
saw that danger was (imatunet?) and es
caped injury, the great vibration of
the fall throwing him back and out of
danger.
The dead man was born in Sweden
in July, 1888. He came to American
with his parents when four years of
age and for several years after reach
ing manhood, followed his trade as
carpenter. He came to Rock Springs
about two years ago from Minot, North
Dakota, arriving here with his wife
and three young daughters, who sur
vive his untimely death. These, togeth
er with his parents, residents of
Bruces, Michigan and three sisters
and one brother, who reside in Chica
go, are sadly stricken over his sudden
death.
Mr. Erickson was a member of Local
2309, U. M. of A., also of Carpen
ter's Union No. 1620.
Funeral services willl be conducted
from the family residence at 211 Thom
as street. Saturday afternoon.

I searched the cemetery when he is listed as being
buried but could not fine him. The cemetery had been update in the 70's and many head stones where lost.
The house in which he lived is still standing and if you are interested I could send you a picture of it.

Juanita

The death certificate of Nils F.(aka Nels) Erickson, death 29 Sep 1933, in Nicollet county, Minnesota list his parents as Nils Erickson of Sweden and Annasten Nelson of Sweden. Nils residence is listed as Carver county, Minnesota.

Nils was born 1858 in Sweden. He married Anna Danielson (maiden name per her obit/death cert, however son Henry's obit lists her maiden name as Lundgren) before 1886, as eldest son was born 22 Mar 1886. He immigrated about 1883 per census info but don't know if he was married or single when he immigrated.

Thier son Fred and wife Anna lived in LeSueur county and Scott county Minnesota before settling in San Francisco township in Carver county, Minnesota. Their children included Fred, Lillian, Charles, Mabel, August, Elizabeth, Madeline, Henry and Ruben.

Nels and Anna are buried at Mount Hope cemetery in Carver, Minnesota.

From what I understand, they immigrated from Sweden or somewhere in the Norwegian territories. Any information would be extremely helpful!

Married 20 JUN 1837

There is a mention of a man with the last name of Brus, on the same address that MIGHT be their son:
Sven Harry Brus, b. 21 NOV 1937 in Ore, Kopparbergs län, Dalarna. Died 27 OCT 1964 in Furudal, Ore, Kopparbergs län, Dalarna. Occupation: Tailor.
-------------------------------------------------------------
You can find out if Frida Erika Östling had any more children by contacting the regional archives asking them to have a look at her will where her children (if any) will be mentioned. Give them the data I gave above and be specific about the fact that you just want to find out if she had any children and their full names and birth data and preferably where they live now if they are still alive.

Regional archives for Kopparberg is: Uppsala: http://www.riksarkivet.se/default.aspx?id=7950

You can use this site http://tinyurl.com/3s7ewbf after receiving the information about her children. The site holds information about almost everyone paying tax in Sweden today and it will give you their address if you want to get in contact.

Changing their last name from Högberg to Erickson is a bit odd, it would usually be the other way around. Swedish people usually changed their name from Svensson, Andersson, Eriksson etc to something that wasn't so common. Högberg would be something that they would change to, not from.

Good luck!

Anna
I am not related to this family

Rick, I know a lot about SOME of the these people:
Eric W. Erickson was my GGfather.
August Erickson was one of his sons. Had 13 kids
Charles Erickson an older son, from "first family" born in Sweden.
John Erickson, another older son, who moved to seattle early last century.
Alfred Erickson, another son. He lived with my family when I was a kid. Remember him well.
Emil Erickson, another son.
If you are a Johnson, perhaps you descended from Mary Maria Erickson Johnson of Hancock, MN?
Lets get in touch.
