W W Erskine was my great-grandfather. Born 1882 in Fife, Scotland, died 1914 in Wallsend, NSW, Australia. Emigrated from Scotland to Port Chalmers New Zealand in about 1906, and then to Newcastle NSW, Australia, in about 1908, where he married Ethel Curry and had 2 children, Catherine Curry Erskine, b 1909, and James. Catherine was my grandmother.

Whilst in NZ he also fathered a child - a girl, born about 1907.I don't know her name, but have found an 8 year old message from her daughter Janet Ewing, but the message is too old to reply to. Janet is my father's cousin!

I would like to contact Janet or any other family members or descendants of W W Erskine living in NZ.

Hi I am trying to trace my ancestry back and as specifically as possible to Scotland. The problem is that I know almost nothing about anyone past my paternal grandparents. Grandfather: Conrad Erskine(possibly John Conrad Erskine, he died when i was very young) married to Florene with whom he fathered John Conrad, Jane, and James Stovall(my father, youngest: born 1959)...they lived (as far as i know) primarily in stranger, tx which is located somewhere near marlin and kosse, tx... Florene was married once before and had one child Jan Senuta...if anyone knows of any links or jumping points that could help me out i would really appreciate it.

Would appreciate any information on the parents and siblings of Benjamin Erskine b. 1860 Ancoats, Manchester, Lancashire, England.

1861 England Census shows Benjamin (1)living with parents, John (41) & Sarah (38) Erskine and siblings Robert (10), William (8)and Elizabeth (6) at No. 6 Lower Canal Street Cottages, Manchester.

1871 England Census shows Benjamin (11) at Cheetham Hospital & Library for Boys, Hunts Bank, Market Street, Manchester.

Benjamin's parents seem to have disappeared between 1861 & 1871 census and I'm unable to find out what happened to them or to the other children Robert, William and Elizabeth.

1901 census shows Benjamin married with children and his sister, Elizabeth, is living with them in South Manchester.

Elizabeth must have married someone by the name of Smith Collis or Collis Smith. She went to Australia to visit her brother Benjamin and died whilst there.

I have information on Benjamin from 1901 & his descendants who emmigrated to Australia which I am happy to share with interested parties.

Roslyn Erskine
Australia

Looking for any info on Harriet Erskine, born abt. 1809 in New Hampshire, she just might be my 3rd great grand mother. I have only found her listed in two Census records. 1860 Hoosick, Rensselaer, NY living with A.H. Downer and wife Ester….NO relationship stated…Also in 1880 Census Petersburgh, New York living with N.R. Powell and wife Christena….again NO relationship stated…Christena is my 2nd Great Grand Mother and I believe that Ester is her sister….but I need confirmation. I can’t confirm Christena’s maiden name, but Harriet lived with her so I’m trying to confirm that Harriet is in fact Chritena’s Mother. Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks.

Rick Powell
Frances or John Channon Erskine(AUS.Canada)

John Channon Erskine was born in Berwick on Tweed, England in the mid 1870s. His brother Frances is believed to have gone to Canada after the Boer War, but we have no record to confirm this.
We think their father is John Erskine and mother is Mary Channon, but we have no records yet. Part of the family moved to Australia. Here is our interest. Please help as my father in law is 90 and would love to know any information we can find. Thank you, Helen

Not the same surname, I know, but only Surname board that is even close. Looking for information on Etta Erskins, married William Hart sometime around 1870, 1871 in Iowa. One known child, Emma, born 1871 in Iowa, died Apr 7, 1896 in Geneva, NB.

Emma was known to be an orphan (at ear;u age) so Emma/William Hart may have died around 1880.

From Emma's Obit

Newspaper published 10 April 1896:

Merrill -- at her home in Geneva, Nebraska Tuesday morning, April 6, 1896 of pneumonia, Emma, Wife of Orla (Orrie) Merrill, aged 25 years.

The deceased was born in Iowa and was left an orphan at an early age. For a number of years she made her home with an uncle. Later she made her home in St. Louis and came from there to Nebraska in 1886.

She made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Christian at Fairmont for sometime. She then came to Geneva and resided with the family of Elder Pardee for a year and was then married to Mr. Merrill. Mr. and Mrs. Merrill have been married about seven years.

There survive the deceased her husband and a son five years old and a baby seven months old. The baby is very sick and its recovery is doubtful.

The funeral took place from the Christian church of which the deceased wa a member, at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning and was conducted by Rev. A. A. Arthur.

Erskine family in Co. Donegal Ireland

I am looking for information on the Erskine family from Killybegs, County Donegal, Ireland. My 3rd great-grandmother, Ellen Erskine (c1815-c1870), married William O'Malley and emigrated to Illinois, settling in Fairbury (Livingston County). Her sister, Margaret Erskine (c1822-1893), married James Haffey and emigrated to Waterloo, Seneca County, NY. The Haffeys moved to St. Louis, MO. James, a "pack peddler," died on the road working in Mississippi. Margaret and her family moved to Fairbury, IL and lived near her sister Ellen O'Malley's family.

I'd appreciate any help with this family.

Kathy

Erskine family record

I have an Erskine family record from the 19th century that I am willing to send free of charge to any plausible claimant. The names and dates listed on it are as follows. Under the heading "Parents": George ERSKINE, born December 18, 1803, married June 2, 1825, died July 28, 1886; Pluvinia FISKE, born December 17, 1806, married June 2, 1825, died September 10, 1872. Under the heading "Children": George Washington Monroe, born May 28, 1826; Charles Martin, born January 27, 1828; Phebe Mariah, born September 19, 1830, died January 14, 1844; Dwight Fiske, born July 13, 1832, died January 20, 1860; Manoria Elizabeth, born February 24, 1835, died May 3, 1852; Henry Francis, born June 12, 1837; Arletta Pluvinia, born May 7, 1841, married May 23, 1866; Sherman Edson, born November 24, 1844; and Mary Jane, born November 20, 1847, died December 24, 1866.
I bought the frame at an auction somewhere in Vermont or New Hampshire years ago. The 1870 Census lists George Erskine, age 66, living in the town of Roxbury, Washington County, Vermont, with his wife Pluvinia, age 63, and son Edson S. [sic], age 24.
I found this record in a frame behind another picture. It is large (27 1/2 " tall by 21 3/4" wide), in not very good condition with some water-staining and tears 3 or 4 inches into the image. It is a preprinted, chomolithographed form, copyright 1884. I will try to send a scan of part of it in response to any emails.

Madison Harvey Erskine

I'm stuck!!! Margaret Erskine (born 1815) is the mother of Madison Erskine (born 1832). At the court house in Monroe County, WV I found Madison's marriage certificate and the only parent listed was Margaret Erskine. George Vass is listed many places as Madison's father, but George didn't marry Margaret until 1842, 10 years after Madison was born. George Vass was married previously and there is a possibility of Madison being born out of wedlock. Two problems - does anyone know who Madison's father is? Also, who is Margaret's parents.

I am the great grandaughter of Madison Harvey Erskine; grandaughter of Harvey Madison Erskine; daughter of Charles Madison Erskine. Also, I am the only child/grandchild of this line.

Appreciate any help.

Pat Erskine K.

Rachel Bonner Erskine

Seeking information about Rachel Bonner Erskine for a book I'm writing about a quilt made in Columbiana Co., Ohio in 1853. Rachel Bonner Erskine Cooper Clempson (Clemson) is one of the women on the quilt. She was married to Reuben Clempson of West Twp. in 1853. Her prior husband was Whitson Cooper who died in 1835. Both she and Whitson were probably from Chester County, PA before moving to Ohio. Whitson was once a Quaker (disowned in 1821). Rachel may also have been a Quaker. I have been unable to find out anything about Rachel whose maiden name was probably Bonner and who may have married an Erskine before marrying Whitson Cooper. The quilt I am writing about was made by Rachel and Whitson's daughter, Philena Cooper Hambleton. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Robert Erskine (Areskine) in Kirkcudbright, Scotalnd and James Kennan, Jannet Kennan, Mary Maxwell of Newlaw (Nether Riddick), Grizzel Grierson

I am trying to confirm a claimed connection between Jannet Erskine/Areskine
(nee Kennan) (b. appr 1740 d. 1829) and Mary Maxwell, one of the Maxwells of
Newlaw. I have a copy of a family tree and an essay on the Erskine family
written I think by an American Erskine in 1917. It claims that Jannet
Erskine/Areskine (nee Kennan) was the daughter of Mary Maxwell of Nether
Riddick and her husband, James Kennan. James died in 1745 and his Testament
Dative indicates that he had two daughters one of whom was named Jannet
(there was no mention of his wife so presumably she had already died)

I also have a copy of the Marriage Banns of Jannet Kennan and Robert Areskine, who
were married in Kircudbright on Jan 4th 1762 but they do not indicate who
her parents were. The problem I have is that there was another Janet
Kennan, the daughter of John Kennan and Janet Herrise, born in Buittle in
1738 (Scotlandspeople web site OPR) and I am trying to find documentation to
confirm which of the two Jannets married Robert Areskine.

Two other pieces of information I have (from the American source -but not
supported by documentation) are that an assignation was made by Grizzel
Grierson (the mother of Mary Maxwell) in favour of Jannet Kennan dated 1764
and that a Mary Maxwell deeded some property in Dumfries to Janet in 1780

Does anyone recognise these names or have any info?

Thanks,

Samuel Adamson

Robert Erskine (Areskine) m. Jannet Kennan Kirkcudbright Scotland Jacobite Wars

Hi there,

I am looking for information on a Robert Erskine (Areskine) who married a Jannet Kennan in Kirkcudbright in 4 Jan 1762. They had a son Robert, born 18 Jun 1775, in Kirkcudbright.

Where Robert Snr was born seems to be proving difficult to establish. Apparently he appeared in Kirkcudbright towards the end of the Jacobite Wars.

Does anyone recognise any names here?

Does anyone know of any reference material I could look at to find lists of soldiers in the Jacobite wars?

Thanks,

Sam

As many of you know, the Erskine Board has been without a List Administrator for awhile. And being an Erskine descendant, I was delighted to be appointed as the new List Administrator.

I'm a direct descendant of Christopher (sometimes shown as Charles) ERSKINE (sometimes shown as ASKINS). He was b. bet. 1700-1709. There are those who say he was born in Northern Ireland and others believe in Scotland. He married Susanna Robinson, dau of Gains (Gaius) Robinson, 1729 in Abington, Massachusetts.

I hope that we can get our ERSKINE mailing list and message board in full swing. Hope you'll post a message and share your ERSKINE information and questions with everyone.

Carol Kennedy
Arizona

Hi Judy and Marion,

I descend from Delilah Ann? Erskine purportedly b. 1824(1880 Census indicates 1816) and William Anderson Marshall. No proof of her parentage, but thought to be the daughter of:

James Erskine and Eleanor Lake/Leake.
Incidentally, Ellen Leake's first husband was Brice Miller, killed in the Indian raid in which Margaret Sarah Handley Paulee (later) Erskine was taken captive by Shawnees.
James thought to be son of:

Michael Erskine and Margaret Handley (Paulee)

Again, no proof, although Lisa Odom has this information:

"Monroe County Deaths
18 Jul 1856
James Erskine 60 years died of consumption son of M. and M. Erskine, death reported by wife, Eleanor Erskine"

Assuming that "M and M" are Michael and Margaret.

All the records I have seen show Michael's parents as:

Henry Erskin and Jean Thompson.

Would it be possible to get a copy of the family history mentioned uploaded here? I would be happy to share anything I have been able to find on the Erskines.

Thanks!

Dave

I am looking for anyone who may have information on my great grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Little. She was born on 21 Dec. 1851. Her mother died and I guess her father sent most of the children to live with other families. She was born in Guernsey County, Ohio. She has been located on the 1860 Census in Centre Twp living with William and Ellen Erskine. On the 1870 Census she is still in Centre Twp living with John W. and Eleanore Erskine. I believe that this is the same couple on both census. She married my great grandfather, Thomas William Salisbury on July 3, 1873, in Afton, Iowa. If anyone has information on the Erskine family she lived with I would like very much to hear from you.

I'm the new administrator

Hi Erskine Surname Board! I'm the newly appointed board administrator. I am also the board administrator for Clan Erskine. If you have any questions about either board or want to communicate with me directly about anything related to Erskine please feel free to do so at tandjmyers@msn.com. I will be regularly checking on this board and the Clan Erskine board.
I got interested in Erskine last year while researching my family genealogy. Actually, my wife, Jacki, is an Erskine--but you know how it goes--everyone's interest in genealogy is a bit different. She likes to wear the tartans but isn't into the history or genealogy so much. Her GGGGgrandfather was Salmon Erskine of Essex, New York--quite an interesting fellow. We trace the family back further through the Revolutionary War to Scotland to Stirling Castle. My 10 year old daughter brags to her friends that she is related to the 10th Earl of Mar. I tell her that if her family was really in a direct line of succession with the Earl then they would have never left Scotland for a new life in America.

In December 2001 the various Scots clans were set up on their own rootsweb message board. There are a bunch. Erskine is an official recognized clan so it has its own message board for clan-related issues. This is the correct board for posting genealogical issues relating to tracing Erskine family branches. If you have questions or inquries about what happened back in Scotland with Erskine, or is still happening (they have reunions) then post at Clan Erskine.
Thanks.
Todd Myers
Denver

This is an excerpt from a family letter:
"Since many of our staunchest friends had moved away when Trinity left, it hurt Papa's practice seriously - However, he had all of the rural practice for miles around - Mr. Bill Mayes and his large family and tenants, Cat. Anderson, the Bob and Will Anderson families, Rob Erskine and his tenants, all swore by Papa and wouldn't have had anyone else."

It refers to Dr. A.S.
To Robert Noel Erskine

Robert - be not afraid of the task before you. Go to Rootsweb main page. Type into the Search Box the name John Erskine. There will come up 34 pages of John Erskines. Glory be, there are hosts of Earls of Mar and they go all the way back to Morsund, Earl of Mar, born 1120. Yes, that is YEAR 1120 Its a blast !!! My paternal name is Demar. I have come to the conclusion that this is a title and that my name is Erskine. I wrote to Brit. Embassy in D.C. a long time ago and got back a copy of two pages of a small book listing a De Mar as chaplain to Queen Mary of Scots. So I got a history of her and there my Mar was. The Earl of Mar playing quite a different role than mere chaplain.
Lately I have gotten back into it on the net. I am still having trouble with DeMars in the US. I find them everywhere but can't connect yet. Still digging.
Now you have fun. Note that the first names from very ancient times keep repeating down the line to today. Interesting. Sincerely Irishpat33@yahoo.com AKA Pat Demar-Hunt, Greater Cincinnati Ohio
