The town of Erwin received its name by a mail mishap. On December 5, 1879, the name of the town was Ervin, in honor of D.J.N. Ervin, who had donated 15 acres (61,000 m2) of land for the county seat. A typo made by post office officials caused the name to be recorded as Erwin. The mistake was never corrected.

My father was Walter Zachary Erwin from Erwin TN. His mother was Martha Erwin, father Walter. My name is Margaret Erwin Tesh. Wonder how this all ties in. I have a picture of my grandmother standing on the front porch of her home holding a record album - anyone know what this might be. I was always told that this side of the Erwin's actually had some claim to the founding of the town of Erwin.

If you're still around I have question. I have Susanna Erwin, Daughter of Matthew Erwin & Elizabeth. Susanna d. 29 Aug 1814 Clark co., ky? Susanna was married to Wm. Looking for information about William B. Erwin, born TN 1809, was in Lafayette County, MO 1826- 1850's then in Saline County, MO, died in Payne County, Oklahoma in 1891. He married Catherine A. Peck in 1841 and they had 9 children. Unable to tie him in with family of Joseph Erwin 1715-1819, but location and similar names make it seem possible, i.e. children William Hugh Erwin and Harriet Erwin, and a land transaction by William B. Erwin, Jesse Hill and his wife Harriet Hill.

Henry Clay Erwin is believed to be the son of Henry J. Erwin (born in NY) and Olive Mary Louise Unknown (born in Ohio).

Henry Clay Erwin is believed to have had two sisters: Gertrude and Esther, who were born in Ohio or New York.

Henry Clay Erwin mar. (1) Julia Payne in Chicago (b. ca. 1884, IL), and issued two children: Dorothy P. Erwin and John Edward Erwin, in Chicago, Cook Co., IL.

The only Roy V. Erwin I know was adopted by Robert Samuel Erwin and his second wife Alice
Robert Samuel Erwiin is in South Norwich, Oxford County, On.

His first wife had children one was Oliver Henry Erwin
my Grand father on our mother's side.

Have more names our mother was Shirley May ERWIN the 4 child of 12.

My sister once told me that my father had two brothers, much older than him. A group came and stole some horses and they chased them until they had killed all the theives, or captured them. But out of fear for the safety of their family they did not return home.

I do not know if this is a true story or not (sounds to me like a plot for a western movie)

In doing some research in Wise Co. TX, I accidentally came across information with the name of the parents of Lemuel Lee Erwin. You might want to make note of these names in the event some relationship can be found to your Charles Edward Erwin.

The information is from Wise County TX Genweb site which has some of the birth records. These are the records for two younger sisters of Lemuel L. Erwin.

Veatus Amanda Erwin, b. 7/24/1893, father Samuel S. Erwin, b. AL, mother Olivia Matilda Laswell, b. TX (other records show GA).

Nellie Jeanetta Erwin, b. 4/22/1896, father Samuel Seymore Erwin, b. AL, mother Olivia Matilda Laswell, b. TX.

Texas marriages as found at familysearch.org has this listing:

S. S. Erwin m. O. M. Laswell, Sep 1880, Hopkins County TX.

In the 1900 I.T. census, Lemuel, at age 14, was the oldest child in the household. It is entirely possible that Olivia had given birth to one or two children prior to Lemuel.

I just proved that the Charles Erwin in 1900 Chickasaw Nation, Stephens County, was NOT the father of your Charles Edward. The 1900 Charles Erwin, his wife Frances and children, Eva L. and James Luther, were all in Idaho by 1910. The name on all records that I found there, including death records, spelled the name Irwin.

So, the search is not over. Probably the only helpful information would be if a marriage record could be found for Maude M. Hutchins.

I appreciate this. My dad knew very little about his father, or at least he did not say very much. and now that almost all of that generation in my family is gone, it is too late to get answers. I will take your advice on jotting down names. I too am enjoying the searching. A few years ago I got started because a friend was working on a scrapbook she wanted to give to family members at a family reunion, I started searching for her family found photos, and information for her that helped her a lot. Then my daughter wanted me to find out about her father's father and I learned so much about my ex's family...well let's just say it explained a lot. (Evil LOL)

I have found quite a lot of information about Lemuel Lee Erwin. When I first began genealogy research in 1983 I read several books on how to research. One made the statement that when looking through the surname in a county, jot down others with the surname in that same county, particularly if they lived in the same vicinity, because eventually you might find that they are related.

I do think there is a good possibility that Lemuel and Charles Erwin were related. Maud Jackson Carroll married Wm Hughes in Grady Co. OK. Wm Hughes died 1915 and is buried in Grady Co. Lemuel and Lou Erwin were living in Grady County in 1910. In fact, they appear to have lived the rest of their lives in Grady Co. and are buried at Chickasha. In 1910 Lemuel’s brother Samuel Erwin and sister Nellie Erwin were living with them.

Here is the family in 1900, Indian Territory, Chickasaw Nation

Charles would be too old to be Olivia’s son, but he might have been a brother-in-law. It is unfortunate that we do not have the 1890 census. It leaves a real hole in research. I have not found this Charles Erwin in 1910, but I do think this might be a possibility to be the father of Charles Edward Erwin.

I enjoy research, especially researching in OK, so I will give it some more thought, to see if I can prove (or disprove) the relationship.

Thank you very much. My older sister told me that Charles was married before and divorced. I am not sure she has not confused Charles with Robert Isaac Aldridge, Maude's 4th husband. He was morried before he and Maude married. Maude's sister Lula aka Lou married an Erwin. His name was Lemual Lee Erwin. I can send more info about them if you like. I do not know if the two men were related.

Your new information was helpful. I was able to find the family in 1920 Scurry County TX, and in 1910 Grady Co. OK. Charles Edward was listed with the name Charles Hughes in 1920.

You might already have this information but it is the records of the first 2 marriages:

From the Choctaw Indian Nation Marriage records, 1890-1907

From Grady County Court records is the listing of this marriage license:

W. M. Hughes and Maud Carroll, 2/11/1908.

Here is the Findagrave link to the burial information for William M. Hughes, in Grady Co. OK. It shows that Maude Myrtle Jackson was also married to George R. Carroll, Charles Edward Erwin, and Robert I. Aldridge. Click on the name of Maud and you will get the link to her burial information.

My great grandmother was Erwin, but I don’t see a link to your line. I live in OK. I said that OK does not have good birth, marriage and death records online. That is true for the state, but many counties have numerous records online. I’m disappointed that I have not found the marriage record for Maude M. Hughes to Charles Erwin, but I will continue to see what I can find.

Thank you for your reply. I have been able to find a lot of information about Maude Jackson Carroll Hughes Erwin Aldridge.It is her third husband, I am trying to trace. I am not sure how his name was spelled, I am not even sure it was Erwin.

My reasons for uncertainity is that my Aunt Ollie nee Carroll once mentioned that Maude was still livingon a reservation when she married Mr. Edwards. I did not, to my regret now, ask her who Mr. Edwards was...I was afraid to let her know I did not know. Then my father grew up thinking he was another man's son. I think Charles Edward Erwin, my father can be found in the census listed as Charles or Jack Hughes. His father died in 1918, shortly before his birth.

The name Erwin can be misspelled in many ways. I have not been able to find Charles Edward Erwin in the census records for 1920 or 1930. You might have other information that can be helpful to someone trying to aid in your research.

Do you know where in Oklahoma Charles E. Erwin was born? Do you know where his mother was born, and did she have children from earlier marriages? Oklahoma does not have good birth or marriage records online, so any bits of information that can help find Charles Edward Erwin in 1920 or 1930 would be helpful. I'm looking to see whether or not his census records provided a birth state for his father.

I am looking for information on Charles Erwin, he died around 1918, possiblly in Oklahoma. He was married to Maude Jackson-Carroll-Hughes-Erwin. After his death Maude gave birth to Charles Edward Erwin 24 March 1918 in Oklahoma. They were married either in 1916 or 1917. This is all we know of him.

I believe a distant ancestor of mine was married to Oscar Erwin. Her names was Sophia Jones, daughter of John & Eveline Jones.

I saw story on the Carter County website that said Oscar was born in 1862. In the 1850 Carter County Census Sophia, age 5, is living with her parents and 2 houses away is John L. Erwin, with a son named Oscar who is 17. It seems more likely she would marry a man 12 years older than 18 years younger.

Does anyone know Oscar's parents names so I can determine if this is the right Oscar?

John Jones father was Stephen Zachary Jones and he was always surrounded by Erwin's in Carter County.

Erwin Deed, Burke County, NC, 1817

I have purchased on eBay and will be donating to the NC Archives two more private copies of old Burke County deeds, both related to the same 200 piece of land on Rock Creek. Since there are at least two Rock Creeks in modern-day Burke, I will have to rely on others to be able to guess exactly where this land was.

In summary:

Corrected deed from William W. Erwin to Ezekiel Garland, originally dated 4 November 1817, and corrected 27 January 1823, for 200 acres, "lying on a branch that empties into Rock including the improvements of Ezekiel Garland" and "beginning on a hicory near a small branch and runs North 140 poles to a poplar in Gutridge Garlands line then West with his line 120 poles to a dogwood & white oak then South 65 West 112 poles to a dogwood then South 140 poles to a stake, then North 13 East 228 poles to the beginning." There had been a mistake made in the original deed -- with bounds as above -- and this deed states: "Error in the last line altered by me instead of North 13 East the true line in North 77 East 228 to the beginning." Witnesses were: A.L. Erwin and Asaac T. Avery.

The original conveyance was duly proved in open court in January Session, 1818, and recorded in Book 14 page 115, on 7 July 1818. The deed also notes that the 1823 alteration was duly acknowledged by the conveyer in open court at the October Session, 1826 (?).

The second deed is dated 13 March 1827, and conveys the same 200 acres from Gutridge Garland (spelled "Gutradge," "Gutrage," "Gutridge" and "Guterage") and David Garland, executors of Ezekiel Garland, deceased, to Guteridge Garland, with the same bounds as the corrected deed above. Witnesses were: Lazarus Phillips and Wesley Garland (with another notation I cannot decipher). The signature seems to be spelled "Gutradge Garland."

This deed was proved in open court at the January Session, 1829, on testimony of Wesley Garland, and registered in Book 19, page 382 on 24 April 1829.

yes regarding the Dixie chicks they are my aunt Judy's brother's kids His Name is Paul Erwin. Paul Erwin and Barbara Trask are the parents of Emily Robinson and Martie McGuire. Judith Erwin and Leroy Sullivan are my aunt and uncle. The whole Family Both Judy and Paul's and mine (Sullivan/Lunds) were from fairfield county Connecticut going way back. Martie was born in Pennsylvania and Emily was born in Massachusetts. both Barbara and my aunt Judy are deceased. Leroy and Judy have 2 kids 1 in the navy and 1 doing god knows what. I am looking for information regarding my 2nd great grandfather, Holmes Erwin. According to the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, he was born in Tennessee c. 1837, and as of 17 June 1880 was living in Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia with his wife Sallie Elvira (Nichols) and his 19-year-old daughter Clara May.

According to the census form, Holmes Erwin's father was born in Scotland and his mother in Tennessee. If anyone has any information regarding his parents and/or other ancestors, I would be very grateful if you could share it with me.
