Esquilant Family Tree

My name is Sue Esquilant and I am the middle daughter of my deceased parents Sheila and Geoffrey from Dunedin, New Zealand. My father's ancestors are directly related to Les Esquilant in Sydney, Australia - both grandfathers or further back being brothers - one son decided to stay and live and farm in Australia while the rest of the family settled in New Zealand. My father related the story that as a child he saw either French or Spanish pistols in his grandparents house and that we are connected to the French aristocracy, I do not know anything more or can substantiate this.

When working for the newspaper in Dunedin I sighted a map of the French settlement of New Caledonia or Noumea as it is now known with a bay named Esquilland Bay over 30 years ago, again I have not been able to substantiate it.

Towards the summer, I will be travelling to Rome in Italy for a relaxing few days - I am learning Italian which I simply love especially their food and have read up on their culture. My great-aunt Mabel was trained in Italy for opera singing in New Zealand and I have a love of the opera stars of long ago through my father's family - there is a hill called the Esquiline Hill and Esquilino Plaza, can anyone help whether it is part of our family name and what were we called originally?

I have had a psychic reading done some time ago and she told me I was once a Roman gladiator and that my intuitive senses are very strong, I feel a pull to Italy to visit, perhaps u can help me in some way?

Thanking you.

Sue Esquilant
Brook,

Thankyou for the offer and lovely to be contacted by a member of the family. I have fond memories of your father from my younger days visiting Charlie and Sadie in Fairfield with my parents and sister. I do remember your mother and her sister Lorraine I believe being married to Steven and David and that there where a few babies from both marriages so the list of cousins is obviously quite a substantial one.

I currently live in Stanhope Gardens and would like to catch up at some stage if you are interested.

Kind regards
Trudi

Hello all,

I'm looking for information about a Peter Esquilant from NSW Australia. He is a relative of my wife. In the early 70's he was a lineman with the phone company and probably lived in or around Taree NSW with his wife and children. I would guess he was born in the 40's, but I may be wrong.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

David

Martin - had a session with my sister this weekend, sorting out quite a few photos she recovered from Jim and Alice Patterson's daughter Ivy (known as Pansy) before she died.
There are pix of Edward E and Ellen Millidge (Milladge?) and of various people down the lines which you and your aunt Cinthia may be interested in - but my scanner's knackered so i can't send them as emails - but if you give me your address I can photocopy them and send them snail Mail - there's one skeleton in the cupboard, a couple of mystery ladies whuch Cinthia might be able to help with and some questions about children of Edward and Ellen which might be missing from the tree.
Jim

THat's terrfic - fills oiu that top line and below nicely - Gerard Esquilant in Australia will be really interested - I've got some photos too but I'm not sure exactly who they are so if we can compare them and put a name to some that are so far anonymous that would be really useful.
Jim

Hi - nice to hear more - I've got back to an Edward Esquilant who married Ellen Millidge, probably around 1850 - they started having quite a large family in 1869 anyway.
Between then and 1887 they had at least nine children - Florence, Albert Edward, Henry Joseph, Beatrice Adelaide, Frederick Christopher, Joseph, Alice Gertude, Ellen Maude and Herbert Morris.
Our family comes down through Beatrice Adelaide - so the odds are you come down through one of the male line - quite a few of them had long lives - at least two of them lived to be over 100.
Haven't got an end date for Albert Edward (he was born 1870 - the dates for Henry Joseph are 1871-72, Frederick was born 1874, Joseph 1877-1952, Herbert 1887-1950 - wonder whether Albert or Herbert was yours?
There's a guy in Australia called Gerard Esqilant who's chairman of the Australian Huguenot Society - you'll know that the Esquilants were Huguenots and in the silk trade - slung ut of France by the ruling catholics
He's been back to UK to research and I'm supposed to have swapped family trees with him- except I've been too busy - I think his tree goes bck another three generations from Edward
I'll have to bring our tree up to date - more grandchildren andwould be ahppy to send you a copy.
Jim Latham

Just found your Nov 2004 message. The only details I have of Herbert is his birth under ESQUILENT (prob spelling mistake), and his parents of Samuel & Hannah. He had a sister Anne Emily and a brother Charles William. Herbert was born on 29 Jul 1897. Samuel's father might have been another Samuel but according to his M/C it was George! His mother might have been Emily BURLEY. If you have more info to swap please email me at my new address of
entgdr@ozemail.com.au
Hello Jim
In my searches for the Esquilant Family in the archives in London I did come across the birth of a Beatrice and her name came up several times and I think that she and my great-grandmother could have been cousins! I am at work at the moment and therefore can't get access to my notes at home. If you want to email me directly caroline_matheson@yahoo.com and I will email you by return with what I have. You may have come across in other websearchs a gentleman called Gerard Esquilant in Australia, he along with other Esquilants down under have done a considerable amount of family research and has a massive family tree with countless branches of the family. He has been trying to trace back the family to find out when they left France for the UK but it has been a long time since I have communicated with him. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Caroline

Dear Caroline - my sisters and I were talking yesterday about the new family history programme on BBC1 and inevitably started talking about our own family backgrounds, including my maternal grandmother's family - surname Esquilent - slightly different spelling, but as spelt in the family bible.
My grandmother was Beatrice Adelaide Esquilent - from a large family including sisters, Alice, Julia and Patricia.
My grandmother was born in 1890, died 1963, married a Wilson (whose first name we can't at the moment come up with) - they lived in Plumstead, near Woolwich in East London and their background was of Huguenot immigrants - glove makers from Paris.
I showed your posting to my sisters - they're now arguing downstairs, so I've left them to it - I've never seen the bible - indeed it's not clear whether it's in the UK or Australia - one of the things they're arguing about - but I'll try to get some more information from - I'm assuming it will have other family members listed in it.
Hope this is helpful - probably just makes things more complicated.
Jim Latham (Lincolnshire, UK)

HI,
My name is Trudi Esquilant and I believe that the Charles and Sarah Esquilant that you refer to are my grandparents on my fathers side.
They lived in Fairfield in NSW, were married in October 1928 ( i think), had 6 children, Patricia, Barbara, Peter (my father) born 1941, David, Robert, and Stephen.
Charles died in 1986 (born 1906? ), Sarah and Patricia in 1990, Peter in 1994, all others are married, Barbara being the only one not to have had children.
My fathers cousins ( not sure of name, but can get details ), has prepared quite a thorough family history, and if you would like contact details for him, I am more than willing to get them.

Hoping any of this is of any assistance.

Cheers
Trudi

I am looking for any Esquilant named people as we all seem to be related.
The Esquilant's left France about 1737-1780 (unsubstantiated)
and went to England. They settled in the London area.
I am a descendant of EDWARD ADLOPHUS ESQUILANT
and his wife Louisa Jane BURDICK who left England on 4/7/1855
and settled in Melbourne Australia. They moved to Dunedin New Zealand
in 1862. It appears that Esquilant's went to America also as I have
noted entries in Census records.

Deatils of when they came from France still not known either. Various famil members eventually moved to different parts of the UK and USA. I did fnd details of your ancestor in the searches I have done so far.

Anyway just a brief note to add myself to the esquilants out there..any further info I find I can pass onto you.

Hi Carole,

I too am researching the family history of Esquilants in East London as my great grandmother was Ada Esquilant, daughter of Charles & Emma (nee Long) Esquilant married in 1865. Charles' father was Jospeh Esquilant.

Obviously I would love to hear from other members of the Esquilant family to assist in putting together the bigger picture of our family tree. I look forward to hearing from you.

I am also searching the family history for Esquilant in East London. My paternal great grandmother was Ada Esquilant who married James Beith McNeil in 1900. Her parents Charles and Emma (nee Long) Esquilant were married in 1865. Charles was born circa 1844, father was Joseph Esquilant.

I haven't gotten any further back, but I have also found names of lots of other Esquilants - I've just not fitted them into the bigger picture of the puzzle.

I would love to hear from any other link minded Esquilant hunters, especially those who still have the name - it is quite unique!

I look forward to a response and swappping information.
