I have a brickwall Essex as follows:
Margaret Essex, b. 28 Aug 1802, location unknown.
She m. 5 May 1825, John Hornbaker in Franklin Co., OH.
She d. 10 Jun 1839 in Peoria Co., IL.
I wonder if your Essex families might have a connection to my Margaret Essex. Any help appreciated.
Bob Fuller
reflaf@gmail.com

I am from this line also..my maiden name is Essex and I have traced my relatives back to James Essex, son of Milo and Thama Essex...but would like any information about Isaac Essex from England/Vermont to go back even farther. Their son from which I descend, James Essex from Ohio, married Rachel Pomeroy. They eventually moved to Michigan after marrying in Indiana. They had about 7 children, one of which (Marion M) a.k.a. Isaac Marion Essex b.1866 I descend. He married Minnie Shroeder/Schrouder, and they had 8 children, from which I descend, namely Arthur M. Essex then had my grandfather Ivan Essex who had my father Raymond C. Essex who had and me and my brother> Christine Anne and William Scott Essex of Grand Rapids, MI....I know its long but just trying to help anyone who is trying to piece together

I am still researching when the Essex family came from England.I can verify that the above information is true, it matches my census records and family tree exactly. I am a junior genealogist currently studying in my Masters Program.

I am always willing to share information

Angela Aponte angela041704@yahoo.com

I also want to thank you - Samuel A. Essex born 1840 in Green Camp OH, husband of Matilda and son of Samuel and Nancy is my great great grandfather and I've been trying to sort out the plethora of Samuel Essexs in the mid nineteenth century - still not sure where father Samuel came from - there is a marriage record online from Marion OH in 1837 which has Samuel and Nancy marrying, but I haven't found them on the 1850 census - I see a Nancy living alone with 2 daughters next door to a John Essex, who has a Samuel (or Lemuel) of the right age living with him - not sure what was going on there.

I also want to thank you. My great great grandfather was Samuel A. Essex born 1840 in Green Camp, OH. Son of Samuel and Nancy married 1837 in Marion, OH. I'm having some trouble tracing back from him - there is some confusing information on the 1850 census, Nancy is listed as living next to John and Elizabeth with 2 daughters, Samuel (or maybe Lemuel) of the right age is listed as living with John and Elizabeth. Any ideas on how to trace back further would be much appreciated.

Probably a little dated now, but just in case. I have a nice antique print of Emeric's entitled The House at the Foot of Corcovado, that was based on a watercolour he produced in 1817 when in Rio de Janeiro. There is an interesting letter on the back plate from the donor of the item who was living in Rio in 1961. The images of the picture and the letter are viewable on my eBay listing - just do a search on the item # which is 320806553521

Re: Nancy McCloy/McClay, Joseph Essex, James McCloy 31 Aug 1799

This reply is especially in reference to 2 posts dated 2 Feb 2006 5:10 AM GMT by Toni683 and replied to by Tim Essex dated 2 Feb 2006 2:09 PM GMT.

The main issue which I'd like to resolve was whether the Joseph in question was a McClay or a McCloy. James McCloy (if indeed he and Nancy were McCloys) who acted as a suretor was probably a brother to Nancy. If so then he would have only been 14 years old at most, the minimum age to act as a witness to a contract in Virginia.

Tim says the original shows that they signed their names as McClay, with an "a". However, I have a copy that to me looks like James has signed his name as James McCloy, with an "o". I've posted about this on another site somewhere. As stated there I am not a paid handwriting expert, however I spent about 30 years teaching English to elementary and junior high school students at which time I engaged daily in the burdesome task of trying to understand their squigglies. It is this experience that also makes me believe the James who signed on the document of which I have a copy was only a young lad, one whose handwriting at the time he signed it was still a work in progress.

I have not seen the so-called record book in question so do not know what it shows but I see several places on the document where, again to me, the names of James and Nancy are clearly McCloy and not McClay.

I'd really like to resolve this since this is the only document in my possession that has what I think is the signature of James McCloy who would have been my ggggrandfather, probably the first McCloy to emigrate to Ohio. His wife was Rhoda (last unknown) and they probably moved to Ohio around 1830 - 35 with their children, James Madison, Alexander, Mary and Eli McCloy, all of whom were born in Virginia.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I saw that information. I was confused because I was finding other sources naming a wife named Caroline, and he had children with her. I think I'm finally sorting it all out - if I'm right, Caroline died the year before he married Julia, and his children with Caroline would have been grown, so not listed on later census reports...

Thanks again!
Dorene

He married Hannah HULL 30 MAR 1802 in Harrison County, Virginia now West Virginia.

Child of Phillip O. ESSEX and Hannah HULL is:
+	2 i.	Samuel H.

Hi,
Samuel Essex is my great-great grandfather. He was born about 1817-1819, was a preacher, and married Julia Ann Bigley on April 19, 1866. They had 3 sons, Cortland (my great grandfather), Charles, and Orion. Samuel died on Apr 11, 1877, and Julia eventually remarried Martin C Mowen in 1882.

I am trying to find out who Samuel Essex's parents were, and cannot find anything. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dorene Essex Stander

Edith H. Wahl (b. May 1879 in NJ) was the wife of John E. Essex (b. May 1879 in Brooklyn, NY). Their only child was Walter E. Essex (b. 18 May 1902 in Brooklyn, NY).

As I mentioned in the above post, Edith and John died when Walter was 2 years old. She was adopted when she was young by Anthony (b. Jan 1849) and Louisa (b. May 1846) Wahl. It's my understanding that the Wahl's were family friends, so her biological parents most likely have a different surname.

None of my family knows who Edith's parents were. I haven't been able to find any marriage records or death records for Edith. I know that adoption records are often sealed. At this point, I'm not sure what to try next!

My primary interest is in his activity as a painter, and on his watercolours made in St Helena and in South America. Simon Keynes, Cambridge. December 2010.

Seeking Father of Walter E. Essex (b. 18 May 1902 Brooklyn NY d. 1942)

This is a pretty old post, but I got pretty excited when I did a search and this came up. The family you're referring to sounds similar to the one I'd like more information about. My grandmother said that her father had an Uncle Fred Essex from Long Island.

My grandmother's father's name was Walter E. Essex (b. 18 May 1902 Brooklyn NY d. 1942). Both his parents died when he was 2 years old. He was raised by a family friend. His mother's name was Edith H. Wahl (b. May 1878). Walter's father's last name was Essex, and I have a hunch that his name might have been John Essex (b. May 1879) due to a 1900 USFC, but I have no evidence of this.

This particular USFC lists Edith along with another Essex family on the same page living in New Providence, NJ. The head of the family was George Essex (Sep 1835) and his wife was Sarah Anna (May 1841). Two of their children were Charles Frederick and John E. They also had a child listed as George H. I'm wondering if that could be "Uncle Harry" seeing as he had the same first name as his father, I could see him going by his middle name.

Any help anyone migh provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. I saw your post & had to reply.
I am researching my Winterhalder family line.
My 3rd great-grandfather was Joseph Winterhalder b. abt. 1814 in Germany. His second marriage was to a Rebecca (Essex) Sullivan in Marion Co., Ohio in 1852. Rebecca was previously married to a James Sullivan, m. in Marion Co., OH in 1851. Joseph & Rebecca are found living in Crawford Co., OH in 1860, & 1870 & 1880 in Wyandot Co., OH. They had 3 sons, Samuel, Alexander & William Wesley Winterhalder. Rebecca Essex (Sullivan) is the dau. of Milo and Thama? Essex.
Their son, William Wesley Winterhalder marries Lydia J. Carpenter (dau. of David Carpenter and Hester ?). Lydia was born in Wyandot Co., OH 19 May 1856 and dies in Wyandot Co. 5 Jan 1889. William & Lydia had 2 children, Mary Rebecca "Mayme" and William Earl "Pete" Winterhalder.
I have a photo of the flowers that were on Lydia's casket when she died. The pictures were passed down to me through my Hain family. My 2nd great-grandmother was Anna Elizabeth Winterhalder (Hain), child of Joseph Winterhalder from his 1st marriage. The Hain are from Marion Co. OH.
Sorry this is so lengthy. I am wondering if any of this sounds familiar? Thanks. Carla
