Ellen, Do you still need information on Allen S. Ethridge & Sarlema E. Martin? She is my relative! Her parents were John Wesley Martin & Mary Etta Wilson who both died from typhoid fever in 1893. They are buried in unmarked graves in Oconee Hill Cemetery, Athens, Clarke Co., GA.

Sarlema "Lemma" E. Wilson Ethridge is buried in Harmony Grove Methodist Church Cemetery, Auburn, Barrow County, Georgia. They married, Oct. 6, 1895 in Gwinnett County, Georgia. The 1900 Census of Gwinnett County, Georgia shows the folowing children: Corie E. b. 1897 & Roy C. Ethridge b. 1899. Also, included in their household was her two younger brothers, Homer S. & Alford F. Martin. Since their parents were deceased, they were taking care of them. Sarlema was married 4 years, mother of three children & 2 living. I think that the deceased child was their first one! Sarlema (Selena) E. Martin b. September 29, 1872 d. December 8, 1916 at age 44. Children born after 1916 would be the children from Allen's second marriage. Sarlema had 7 siblings that I am aware of! Sarlema's mother is related to me through her grandparents, William Alfred Wilson & Assenath "Seny" King. Let me know if you need any help! Virginia Wilson Bailey

2010 Ethridge/Etheridge Family Reunion

The Ethridge/Etheridge Family of Northwest Florida will hold their annual reunion on Saturday, June 5, 2010, from 10 am - 4 pm CST at the Community Center in Kinard, Calhoun County, Florida. (The Community Center is the old school.)
Any Ethridge/Etheridge descendants are encouraged to attend and bring a covered dish of their favorite recipe.

This is the family line of Samuel Ethridge/Etheridge (@1808 - @1885), who first married Lucinda Grantham (1813 - @1850)in Georgia. He and Lucinda had James (@1838), Arlenas (@1839), Ann (@1843), Martha Jane (1845 - 1914), Nancy (@1847), and John (@1849). Lucinda died sometime during 1849/1850. Samuel then married Sarah Ducker Goodwin (@1817 - @1863)in 1859 in Decatur County, Georgia, and had Enoch (1851-1894), Frances Lucinda (1855-1910) and Isaac Samuel (1858-1905). Sarah Ducker Goodwin Ethridge died sometime prior to 1863. Samuel married Sarah Ann Scott (a married name - her maiden unknown) in Calhoun County, Florida in 1863. He died sometime between 1880 and 1885 in Calhoun County, Florida, his burial place is unknown.
Little is currently known of Samuel and Lucinda's children, James, Arlenas, Ann, Nancy, and John. There are theories but none proven.
Samuel and Lucinda's daughter Martha married William Henry Beck (1843-1887) in 1865 in Calhoun County, Florida. Samuel was living in the home of his daughter Martha and husband William Henry as recorded in the 1880 census report. Martha and William Henry remained in Calhoun County, FL until their deaths. Their children were Elizabeth (1869), Nancy (1872-1952) Hennie (?), Jesse Samuel 1877-1973), Kizzie M (1879), Tony (1882-1916), Henry Florance (1883), and Edith (1886-1963). Their descendants are many with surnames of Beck, Manning, Clifton, Clark, Wilkes, Dalton, to name some.
Enoch son of Samuel and Sarah Ann Ducker Goodwin Ethridge, traveled westward to Pensacola, Escambia County, FL sometime between 1870 and 1880. He died in Milton, Santa Rosa County, FL on 26 Jun 1894. He married Nancy Ann Smith (1852-1942) in Covington, AL @ 1870. Their children were William Henry (1872-1959), Sarah Francis (1877-1958), Isaac Samuel (1880-1962), Mary Elizabeth (1883-1967), Nancy Ann (1886-1943), John Daniel (1888-1965), Ellen Jane (1892-1963). Enoch and Nancy Ann also had many descendants with surnames Fowler, Reimels, Grimes, Hart, Mayhair, Ward, Manning, Cross, Whitfield, Lovett, Bray, Hutchins, to name some.
Samuel and Sarah's daughter Francis Lucinda married Wylie A. Kent (1839-@1910) in Calhoun County, in 1873. Their children were Samuel William (1874), Sophronia (1876), Lucinda V. (1886-1938), Wylie S (1893), and Martha J. (1895). Their descendants have the following surnames Flowers, Broom, Kelley, Rogers, to name some.
Isaac Samuel, son of Samuel and Sarah Ducker Goodwin Ethridge, married Henrietta Davis Burke (1850-@1930), in 1878 in Calhoun County, Florida, where they remained until their deaths. Their children were Isaac Henry (1879-1967), James M. "Uncle Boss" (1881-1962), Rewen Charly (1882-@1900), Minnie (1883-1883), Lewis Ellis (1888-1974), and Charles Dempsey (1896-1925). Isaac Samuel and Henrietta had lots of descendants as well. Some of the surnames are Pope, Fitzsimmons, Kirkland, Thomas, Burns, Capps, and Reed.
For more information please contact Ellen Hulbert at labron_ellen@hotmail.com.

Michael do you have any other info on the Ethridge line? We seem to run into a lot of dead ends. Benjemin and Lucretia had a large family and raised a grandson, Floyd Edward Ethridge. My late husband was Floyd's oldest son. Floyd's mother was Mattie Smith/Ethridge and his father was Johnny Ethridge-oldest son of Lucretia Askins- and Benjemin(BH) Ethridge.

Also looking for any family connection to inherited bone problems that can cripple to make walking painful and awkward. Many other symptoms but bone healing is compromied and can involve other health problems. I'm told it is autosomial dominant-inherited directly from fathers and can be passed on through mothers. Males more affected than females. At it's worst the Symptoms can mimic multiple myaloma cancer. Most have just bome healing problems if a bone is broken.

Mary Ethridge clergylady2@juno.com

Hello Unicorn1950

I'm still searching out this one family name. The Northern Ethridges are a different family than the Southern ones. DNA indicates a difference, it seems.

Have you had successes?
Happy New Year and best regards, ccw

Thank you. That post is close to 10 years old, but I'll see if I can get a response.

Your note for me is over a year old and I just now saw it while searching the Ethridge archives. Never got anything from Rootsweb/Ancestry. I only seem to get sporadic notices from these boards, even though I always click the "Send me an alert when anyone replies..." Even many of my posts to the Rootsweb-L surname lists don't make it to my mailbox, but I oddly find them in the archives - as I did with something I posted to the Smith-L today - several times!

I do not think we have the same Samuel. However, I would like to hear more about your Samuel, such as wives, children, etc. My Samuel was in Early Co., GA married to Lucinda Grantham in 1837. He was in Decatur Co., GA, married to Sarah Ducker Goodwin in 1850. Children listed on that census report are: James, Arlenas, Ann, Martha, Nancy (Sarah's daughter by Richard Goodwin - 1st husband) and John. In the 1850's they had Enoch, Francis Lucinda, and Isaac Samuel and is believed to have moved in and out of Henry (now Houston) County, AL during the mid 1850's. By 1860 they were living in Jackson County, FL. Sarah Ducker Goodwin died sometime between 1860 and 1863. Samuel remarried Sarah Ann Scott (Scott is her married name, maiden name unknown) in 1863 in Calhoun County, FL. Samuel remained in Calhoun County, FL. In 1880 he was living in the home of his daughter, Martha, and her husband, William Henry Beck, in Calhoun County, FL. This is the last census report I found him in, so I've concluded by 1885 that he was deceased, grave unknown. As far as I know he never went any further than Houston Co., AL or Calhoun Co., FL.

I am always looking for more info....any kind of leads. Samuel is my brick wall.

I have read the book TEN GENERATIONS..... I saw a Samuel Ethridge in there, but I could not make any of a connection and determined that it was not my Samuel. I do believe that my Samuel did have family somewhere in the Georgia and Alabama region. His son Enoch did go to Pensacola and died in Milton, FL in 1894.

I am interested in sharing info with you and anyone else who wishes to!!! Thanks so much for your response!!!

My direct ancestor is also Samuel Ethridge (@1816-@1885). Check out various postings I made 4 to 6 years ago on genforum.genealogy.com/ethridge. See, e.g.,
http://genforum.genealogy.com/ethridge/messages/586.html.

The Ethridge line of mine settled in Mississippi many years ago -- even prior to MS's statehood. They are traced from VA and NC, geographically down and around the southeast including GA, AL and TN. I am William Nathaniel Ethridge IV (DOB: 08-10-1948), the oldest of 5 children, in order of age: me, David Ferguson E., Paul Ramage E., Ruby Milbourn E. and Thomas Campbell Ethridge. My father (DOB:08-03-1912), dec, 1971 , the third (or more often known as "William (or Billy) Nathaniel Ethridge, Jr." was a judge. My mother, very much alive, DOB: 03-27-1927, is Lura Clark Ethridge. There is much data about family ties in the family my grandfather, William Nathaniel Ethridge II, put together as of his death in about 1970 called "The Ethridge Family & Allied Kin", some of it on genforum.genealogy.com/ethridge.

My gr-gr-gr grandfather Samuel did not own any slaves. His offspring and their offspring were mostly poor dirt farmers, carpenters, etc. He did have a son, Enoch, who went over to the Milton/Pensacola area, but Enoch was born in 1851 and would not have been old enough to have owned slaves. He didn't leave the Calhoun County, FL area until after 1870, getting married first in Covington County, AL. He was in Pensacola by 1880. He died in Milton, FL in 1894.

I do not have any info whatsoever on Samuel's parents or siblings, if any. They may have been slave owners....I just don't know. I first find Samuel in the 1850 census in Decatur County, GA, married to Sarah Ducker Goodwin, who he had married that very same year. I later found out that he had been married to a Lucinda Grantham in 1837 in Early County, GA. He was born in North Carolina, according to census reports, but where in NC is a big question.

I wish I had more info!!!!

Thanks for your response!

I inherited a box of photo albums from my aunt, Gracie May Young-Westmoreland. She was born in Texarkana, AR in 1913 and went to school at North Heights (AR) and Spring Lake Park Elementary (TX side).
There are a lot of photos I cannot identify. One has the name and date: {Mark Ethridge 1930}. He is a nice looking young man (maybe very late teens or early 20's). It is a full view, in a garden and a very well preserved pics.
Would appreciate hearing from anyone who might know this person. I can email a copy if you want to see him.

Ethridge/Etheridge Family Reunion - NW Florida, Alabama, etc.

The Ethridge/Etheridge family of North Florida will have its first family reunion Saturday, March 21, 2009, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm CST in the old Frink School Gymnasium building at the "Panhandle Pioneer Settlement" which is a part of Sam B. Atkins Park in Blountstown, Florida. All descendants and extended family are encouraged to attend and bring a covered dish of their favorite Ethridge recipe along with their Ethridge pictures and stories.
This line originated with Samuel Ethridge (@1816-@1885), who was originally from North Carolina. Samuel is first found in the 1850 US Census for Decatur County, Georgia, with his second wife, Sarah Ducker Goodwin Ethridge (@1819 - @1863), whom he married in 1850. In 1860 he was living in Jackson County, Florida and by 1870 he had moved into Calhoun County. When he married Sarah he already had children James (@1838), Arlenas (@1839), Ann (@1843), Martha (1845-1914), and Nancy (@1847). All were born in Georgia. Sarah had a daughter, Susan (1837), by her first husband, Richard Goodwin. There was also a son, John, but we are unsure of whether he was Samuel’s or Sarah’s. Samuel’s first wife is unknown.
Samuel and Sarah had three children together. Their names were Enoch (1851-1894), Frances Lucinda (1855-@1910) and Isaac Samuel (1858-1905).
Sarah died sometime in the early 1860’s and Samuel married Sarah Ann Scott in 1863. She died sometime before 1870, exact date unknown at this time.
Not much is known about Samuel and Unknown’s children James, Arlenas, Ann and Nancy. Their daughter, Martha, married William Henry Beck and lived out her life in Calhoun County, Florida. Her children were Elizabeth (@1869), Nancy (1872-1952) married William Mann/Manning, Hennie (@1874), Jesse (@1878) married Mary Ramsey, Tinetha Holland and Mamie Pilgrim, Kizzie (@1879) married J.D. Clifton, Tony (@1882) married Mamie Wooten, Florance (@1883) married Francis H. Clark, and Edith (@1886) married Henry J. Wilkes.
Nothing is known about the son, John, other than his birth year and that he was born in Georgia.
Samuel and Sarah’s son, Enoch, married Nancy Ann Smith (1852-1942) and moved to Pensacola, Florida around 1880. Their children were William Henry (1872-1959), Sarah Francis (1877-1958) married John William Fowler, Isaac Samuel (1880-1962) married Josephine Tonnage and Nora Sophronia Freeman, Mary E. (1883-1967) married Joseph Robert Grimes, Nancy Ann (1886-1943) married ? Hart, John Daniel (1888-1965), and Ellen Jane (1892-1963) married Herbert Archie Mayhair.
Samuel and Sarah’s daughter, Francis Lucinda, married Wilie A. Kent (1839-before 1910) and remained in Calhoun County. She and Wilie both died sometime prior to 1910, exact date and reason are unknown at this time. Their children are Samuel William (@1874), Sophronia (@1876), Lucinda V. (1886-1938) married George C. Flowers and ? Rogers, Wiley S. (1893), and Martha J. (@1895). After Francis and Wilie’s death the children all lived with the oldest son, Samuel William, in Cowarts, Houston, Alabama. It is thought that Francis Lucinda was born in Alabama.
Samuel and Sarah’s son, Isaac Samuel, married Henrietta Davis Burk (@1852-@1930) and remained in Calhoun County. Henrietta had a son, John G., Jr., by her marriage to John G. Burk when she married Isaac Samuel. Together, she and Isaac Samuel had six more children: Isaac Henry (1879-1967) married Willie Belle Ledbetter, James M. “Boss” (1881-1962) married Della Ann Armstrong and Lara B., Rewen Charly (@1882-bef. 1900), Minnie (1883-1883), Lewis Ellis (1888-1974) married Lora E. Durden, and Charles Dempsey (1896-1925). Many of the children, great grandchildren and so forth later moved into the Gadsden County area.
For more information or to share information on the Ethridge/Etheridge family and the family reunion please contact Ellen (Ethridge) Hulbert at (850) 580-1901 or at ellenhulbert@live.com. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to add your stories to the family tree.
Ethridges of New England spread west. General Information

Unlike the vast Ethridge/Etheridge family of the South, This New England Ethridge family remained quite small. This Ethridge family (as family lore records it) began with three brothers who traveled with the Winthrop Group and whose generations ranged from MA, CT, NH, ME, to New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and other points west.

This family is sometimes confused with Ethridge late-comers from Canada and England by way of the Saint Lawrence and the Maritimes.

The sir-name is ever challenging with strange phonetic spellings that tend to lead a researcher astray.

Beware of the posted genealogies. They contain blaring errors that have corrupted most of the research for this illusive family history.

Most New England Ethridge families remained in the North except for a John who married in KY a southern girl during the Civil war.

I hope this holiday note will greatly help many searchers.

If you have tidbits of Ethridge family history or questions about your own Ethridge family, I look forward to sharing my twenty-plus years of mostly cited information. I too have huge, frustrating gaps in this family history, but pieces do keep falling into place.

Our children need to know what a courageous, hard-working, resourceful family we all can be proud to have come from.

Happy Holidays from your cousin, CCWaters
