May 6, 2012... Information I found on Dave Owens (my grandfather) was that he once lived in Black Swamp, Darlington,SC. Then moved to Quewhiffle, Hoke County, NC. He and wife Lucinda had ll children. My father James Owens was one. I met Aunt Lottie (Charlotte) but never knew her children. Katie Owens...Named after my Aunt Katie Charlotte's sister.

I am glad for ancestry.com. My mom is a Fairley, and I have many Fairley, Owens, Henry cousins in that area. I met them for the first time 3 years ago when I went to my first Fairley Reunion in Monroe LA and it was great. We found out that we are also related to Steve McNair and Ronald McNair. I just informed one of my cousins in Dallas Texas and one who lives in Corith Texas. I have a family email group and will advise the Fairleys who live in Monroe and Chicago what I have found. Perhaps, if we are related, I have about 5 cousins who are ready to get this family tree started. Mine only has a few names right now, but will be working at least two hours a day to get it complete. God Bless. jjhenry1@msn.com

I too am putting a family tree together. I live in California and just yesterday, I found a guy who works at Cal State University and his name is Bryant Fairley and his father was born in Wiggins MS. We have a Fairley Family Reunion in Monore LA every year (just started back) and are planing one to be held in San Diego CA. I have a list of Fairley's that is quite extensive and I am working on putting the list on my web site as soon as it is completed. My email address is jjhenry1@msn.com and jjhenry11@verizon.net. Hopefully you guys and us are missing links and we can close the gaps. Also Jesse James Henry Jr on FaceBook. God Bless

We may need to exchange numbers or email addresses so that we can swap information. I have a good bit of information on the Fairley family especially the ones that reside in Collins, Covington County. I can get you a copy of what I have. I plan on hiring a genealogist to do further work for me. Anyway I am going to give you just a few names and you see if these names are familiar to you. By the way who are your parents?

Murdock Fairley (b. Sept. 1825, d. unknown) & Martha (Dec. 1839)

Children:
George Washington Fairley (b. between 1845-1850, d. unknown)
Rich Fairley (b. 1854, d. unknown)
Luiser Fairley (b. 1857, d. unknown)
Jack Fairley (b. 1858, d. unknown)
Webb Fairley (b. unknown, d. unknown)
Louis Fairley (b. 1863, d. unknown)
Isam Fairley (b. 1867, d. unknown)
Elzarh/Ezra (b. unknown, d. unknown)

George Washington Fairley married Martha ? and had two children, Tom and Maggie. George Washington Fairley married Rhoda Lee Lott after his first wife died giving birth and had the following children: Washington (Wash) Fairley, Columbus, Louis (this is the line I come from), Mary, Isom, Vander, Soprhonia/Fronia (Aunt Phronee), Adline (Aunt Babe), Eula, and Gene/James.

Does any of the above names sound familiar?

I posted this to your post on GenForum. Thought it would be good to leave it here too.

Bettina, from what a few of us have put together, John Fairley, Sr. and his family came to North Carolina from Argylshire, Scotland in 1770 and landed at Cape Fear, NC. He had two sons whose families eventually came to Mississippi.

John, Jr. (b. 1763?) and his son Peter (b.1798) were in Jackson Co.(what is now SE Perry Co.) along Black Creek by at least 1818, where Peter was in school at Salem School. They eventually held a good bit of property and probably slaves, and supposedly had a "plantation" near where the old Red Hill Cemetery is today on Black Creek (Peter's grave is still marked there, as is his mom, Katherine's. John's probably buried there too, but is not marked).

Side note: There are more African American Fairleys living in that area than probably any other name and/or race, so it's probably safe to say these Fairleys possibly either owned some of your ancestors or ARE some of your ancestors, if they came from this area. Perhaps a DNA test could tell us more.

Another son of John, Sr., Archibald, had two sons (Peter and "Judge" John Fairbanks) that were part of the early migration to MS in the 1810's and 20's (Archibald, Sr. did not come). A third son, also named Archibald, came from NC in the 1850's. From what we believe the brothers settled near Benndale, MS, in what was then extreme NW Jackson Co. (now NW George Co.), only 5 to 10 miles down Black Creek from their Uncle John, Jr. Peter was listed as a Jackson Co. Justice of the Peace in 1818. John was listed as a JP as well six years later. According to some, the house John lived in in Benndale was still standing in the 1960's. There are a lot of African American Fairleys who live in that area too, so the same possibilities exist here as farther upstream.

In short, one of John Fairley, Sr.'s sons and three of his grandsons moved to the area between Black Creek and the Leaf/Pascagoula River and raised large families, owned lots of property and slaves.

For the record, even though I grew up just a few miles from John's "plantation" on Black Creek, I'm actually a descendant of his nephew Peter, who apparently eventually moved from near Benndale, north into what is now Greene Co. He is my great, great, great grandfather.
I was told a very similar story to yours. I was told that the black Fairley's kind of originated in Perry county. Supposedly, there was a white Fairley brother on one side of black creek that had slaves and a Fairley brother on the other side of black creek that had slaves. I am puzzled as to if this is in fact true. Also, if it is true I am not sure which brother owned my family. I descend from Louis Fairley (b. Jan 13, 1887). His siblings were George Washington (b. about 1845), Martha, Edith, Rich, Elzarh (sp), and Webb. Their father was Meredith/Murdock (sp) Fairley (b. about 1820s). Some of the counties the Fairley's ended up in were Perry, Covington, Forrest, Rankin, George, Greene, and possibly Jackson and Harrison counties. Have you heard anything about the story of the white Fairley brothers? I have even seen these stories mentioned in some of the messages posted by white Fairley families.

Re: Black Fairley's from MS

There were some white Fairley's who moved from NC, I believe it was, in the early 1800's to what is today southern Perry County. They had what I've read was called a "plantation" not far from Black Creek where a road and a bridge is named after them.

While the details are sketchy to me, I believe they were well off and probably owned slaves (who often took their master's surname), because of the prevalence of black many Fairleys still living in the area, some in almost the same exact area where the "plantation" was. Of course, the possibility always exists that the black Fairley's are actually blood-related the white Fairley's.

As to whether all/most black Fairley's came from Miss./NC/ or elsewhere, I can not say. There is a black Fairley Cemetery in the area and an old Fairley cemetery near where the plantation stood that has graves "outside the fence" for blacks/slaves. Hope this helps some.

I am a great great grandson of a Fairley and grew up a few miles from where I'm describing.

Hi Anita
Thank you for your email and hopefully you will receive this if I press the right buttons!
I relayed your email to my Dad and he was very interested to hear your news. In reply,Marjorie was definately one of the original 'Tiller' girls. Her father ran the dance organisation and he set the whole thing up,having the girls dance in line as in line dancing. She was the one really being her father's daughter.
Yes, she married her first husband who was an entertainer he dressed up as a cowboy and was amazing at lasooing. He also used Marjorie in a double act where he would throw knives around her. Must have been quite scary for her. They had Uncle Jamie. The marriage broke up and she came back to Edinburgh and met Uncle Harry who immediately adopted Uncle Jamie.
In the years later H and M did a world tour firstly going to new Zealand where Arthur the brother was, States,Canada then back to Scotland. At this time Uncle Jamie went to Canada to spend time with my Dad.In Scotland, after a short time they divorced.I wonder why Marjorie did not go to your Mum and Dads wedding? Your mum must have known them well.
Marjorie joined Jamie in Canada and they got a little house to live in. However, Uncle J eventually went to live himself in Vancouver. He never married or had children. Incidently he was a wonderful actor and we went to see him in Pantomime in Edinburgh and Mum and Dad saw him in several things.
Uncle harry sold the restaurant and went to live in new Zealand 1954/55, where he married again and had a son Graham. he was much older by that time.Uncle Jamie died about 4/5 years ago in Canada.
I live in Edinburgh,Scotland. Where do you live Anita? Anyway,I hope this helps a bit.
Kind regards

Lorna

Hi Lorna

I wasn't aware that Marjorie was a Tiller girl. She was a Tiller - her father was Sam Tiller who was related to John Tiller. However I knew she was in show business. When she married her first husband the marriage certificate shows them as music hall artists.

Marjorie and my Mother were related. Mum visited Marjorie and Harry in the late 40's and Harry and Jamie frequently visited my Mother and her family during the war.

I have some newspaper cuttings about the Restaurant and cuttings regarding Marjorie's ballroom dancing business.

The last communication I have is a letter from Marjorie to my Mother in 1952 declining the invitation to my Mother and Father's marriage.

I understand that they emigrated to Australia? Do you know when this was? Did Jamie go with them? Do you have dates when they died? Did Jamie marry and does he have any family? Any information you can give me would be wonderful.

Thanks for replying. Oh, and by the way, where do you live?

Regards
Anita

Harry Fairley was Dad's uncle and my granny's brother. Uncle Jamie was a much loved part of our family and talked about Marjorie, his mum alot. She was one of the original Tiller girls.Dad is a mindful of information and remembers alot. If you need some info for family tree do let me know. Last time I saw Uncle Jamie he helped me with family tree things. It was sad he died. Mum and Dad were very close to him.
Kind regards

Lorna

Hello

I am afraid I have no knowledge of the Fairley family. I was trying to find out about Marjorie Tiller/McLeod. She was related to my mother and all I know about her from the information I have is that she was still in contact with my Mum in 1952. I am trying to find out what happened to her after that. She married Harry Fairley and brought with her a son, Jamie. My Mum mentions Harry and Jamie a lot in her diaries during the 1940's. I have found some newspaper cuttings from the 1940's and was just interested in that side of my family.

You say that they went to New Zealand. Did Marjorie's son go with them? When did you emigrate etc etc. Any information would be wonderful to receive.

Thanks for your reply and hope to hear from you again if you have any further info.

Regards
Anita

I'd be interested in sharing more information. Your earlier post mentioned a Francis. I have a couple of photos of a Francis (or perhaps 2 different Francises), but no more identification. Is she a granddaughter of Edwin?

There are descendents of Edwin Fairley living here in San Francisco: Deborah Lewis and her daughters. Deborah is the daughter of Margaret, who was the daughter of Arthur and Eleanor Fairley. Arthur was one of Edwin's sons.

Coincidentally, a descendent of Samuel Cole Fairley visited us just recently, Bill Closs, who lives in NY city.
William Herrenden Cole is my great-great-grandfather. My dad's chronology has a little bit about him. I found references to his birth at familysearch.org, which listed his parents as Thomas Cole and Ruth Herrenden, but I don't know how accurate that is.

How is your mother-in-law related?

Samuel Fairley was my great-grandfather. I'm a descendant through James Fairley, a brother of Edwin. My dad, Lincoln Fairley, used Edwin's memoir and other info to produce "Samuel Fairley -- A Chronology," which I'll try to paste here. I think I've uploaded the photos from it.

David Fairley

SAMUEL FAIRLEY, A CHRONOLOGY
(Compiled by his grandson, Lincoln Fairley - 1978)

This chronology utilizes and supplements the information from these principal sources: his son Edwin's Family Chronicle; the Family Record, a record of dates and locations of family births, deaths, and marriages, maintained by Samuel himself; and the Memorial booklet, prepared by his friend the Rev. Charles E. Harwood of Orleans, Mass. This booklet has a photograph of Samuel as a frontispiece. Other sources are identified in the footnotes at the end. All the documents referred to are listed in an appendix and are in my files.
When my wife, Bertha, and I were in England and Scotland in the summer of 1977 we were able to confirm some of the information from the above sources and, in a few instances, to supplement it. We did not get across to Ireland. However, Edwin visited Armagh probably in the 1920's and was unable to find out anything about the family.

1822	Born in the County of Armagh, Northern Ireland, the son of James, a farmer, and Nancy Wilson. Two (we believe) older sons, Joseph and William reportedly accompanied by a sister (name unknown), came to the United States sometime prior to 1858 and settled in Pittsburgh, Pa. A younger son, Alexander, stayed in Armagh to work the farm. Alexander had only daughters so the family name died out in Ireland. Samuel attended the Cathedral Grammar School in Armagh.

1844	Matriculated at the University of Glasgow. Edwin's Chronicle says he had probably spent a year at Trinity College, Dublin prior to going to Glasgow, but Trinity College has no record of his ever having attended there. However, Harwood's Memorial says that for a time he pursued private study under Dr. Buglass in Dublin.

l844-l846 or 7. Glasgow University records show that he matriculated in 1844 as a 3rd year Arts student and that he was there for two years, but there is no record of his getting a degree. Their records show that he took a course in Logic from Prof. Robert Buchanan and that, at that time, the usual five year course was 1st year, Latin; 2nd year, Greek; 3rd year. Logic; 4th year, Ethics; and 5th year, Physics.
Harwood's story, undoubtedly based on his recollection of what Samuel had told him and others, was slightly different. He says Samuel was at Glasgow for 4 years and earned a degree which he refused to take. He studied Greek, Latin and Theology, including a course with Dr. Ralph Wardlow, a leading name in Scotch theology. The University says that at this time there was no requirement of matriculation for students of theology, so we do not know whether his degree was in Arts or Theology. During long summer vacations he also studied in the Congregational Theological Hall in Edinburgh,

1846 or 7 - 1849 There is no clear record of these years. Harwood says that his "first preaching" was in the Shetland Islands where he went from island to island by boat, that he was in and near Dundee (Scotland) for a year, and also for a season in Newport, which is just across the Firth of Tay from Dundee in the area known as Fife.

l849-l853 At least for a part of this time, Samuel was minister of the Newport Congregational Church. We have a bible with an inscription on the fly-leaf, "To the Rev. Samuel Fairley, January l852 at Newport (Scotland) as a token of affection by his sincere friend John Durham, Dundee." Also, Graeme Tarbet, the present minister, located a reference to his ministry in the church records. It was during these years that Samuel was ordained on November l4, l849.
When Bertha and I were in Scotland in the summer of 1977 we visited Dundee and Newport. We met Graeme Tarbet and his family and took photos of the inside and outside of the Newport church. This is not the building Samuel preached in, his services having been held in someone's home.

l855-l860 Minister of the Congregational Church in Hexham, Northumberland, England.
During this period:

September 9, l856; married, Elizabeth Anna Barrett of Banbury. She died in Hexham, March 9, 1860 in her 23rd year.
August 26, l857; birth of Joseph Mlliam, who died at Waquoit, Mass. in 1918.
June 20, 1859; birth of Samuel Arther, who died in infancy in Hexham, March 20, 1860.

The deaths of his wife and of his second son may account for his leaving Hexham for his next church in March.

l86l-l864 Minister of the Congregational Church in March, Cambridgeshire, England. During this period:
September 26, l86l; married Caroline Cole of March. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Alexander of Peterborough. Caroline was the daughter of William Henenden Cole and Mary (Elmer) Cole. Her father was a farmer and contractor. Her mother died while Caroline was small, so that she was brought up by a stepmother. She had three siblings (full or half?): Thomas, who became successful as a railroad contractor in India; William H., a Congregational minister in England; and Louisa who married Alfred Sawyer. She lived in South Africa until his death, and then went to Southern California. William and Louisa were alive at the time of Caroline's death in 1898.
Two children were born to Samuel and Caroline in March:
July 20, 1862; Grace Elizabeth, who died in New York some time in the 1930s.
February 7, 1864; Edwin, who died in May, 1941.8

1864-1866 Minister of the Congregational Church, King's Cliffe, Northamptonshire, England.
When Bertha and I were in King's Cliffe in July 1977 we took photographs of the exterior and interior of the Congregational Chapel. They are in our photo album. This is the same building in which he preached. While minister of this church, he was at the same time minister at the Congregational Chapel in the neighboring village of Nassington. That Chapel was "opened for worship in September 29, l846," as our correspondent, Mr. Reginald Beedham of King's Cliffe, reports. He also says that Samuel's wife, Caroline, was made a member of the Chapel in 1864 and that Samuel's signature and several entries are in a book of the Chapel records. (It is not clear whether these items refer to King's Cliffe or Nassington).
It was during this period that Samuel's outrage at having to pay the tithe to support the local Church of England, became aggravated. Edwin's Chronicle says that while in March he had refused to pay the tax with the result that authorities had removed some of his furniture of equivalent value. In King's Cliffe according to Harwood, "the rector of the parish (Church of England) had a living amounting to eight hundred pounds a year... To make the matter worse, the rector was an idling voluptuary,; more devoted to the fox-hunt than to the care of souls..."
December 26, 1865; James Alexander, my father, was born in King's Cliffe during this period.

1866-1868 On May 16, 1866, the family (now four children) sailed from Liverpool for the United States on the S.S. City of Boston. They had started on another ship but had no sooner sailed than there was an outbreak of malignant cholera among the steerage passengers, with several deaths occurring the first night out. The ship proceeded to Oueenstown, Ireland, but protests by the passengers forced her return to Liverpool. Samuel is said to have "ministered to the sick and dying." On reaching Liverpool, he was able, despite the quarantine, to get his family off and to secure passage on the City of Boston, though he had to forfeit two-thirds of his original passage money.
According to Samuel's own report in the Family Record, the family "arrived in New York harbor on Sunday morning the 27th, after a very pleasant passage of eleven days. On Tuesday the 29th of May at 7 o'clock P.M. we started by Rail from New York and arrived at Pittsburgh, Pa. the following day at 2 o'clock P.M. Received a cordial welcome from our dear friends there (presumably his sister and brothers and their families) whom we had not seen for many years."
The family probably stayed with Joseph at 97 Beaver St. in what is now the Manchester district of Pittsburgh, or with William at 250 Sandusky St. not far away in what is now called the North Side. This area was then Allegheny City, north of the Allegheny City, north of the Allegheny River, close to downtown Pittsburgh. Our only certain information regarding the brothers is from Pittsburgh City Directories for 1858, 1866-67 and 1867-68. The l858 Directory is the first with any entry for Fairley, suggesting that the brothers had arrived shortly before. They are shown as being proprietors of the J. & W. Fairley "feed store, dealers in grain and feed meal," located at 417 Liberty St., now a main downtown thoroughfare paralleling the Allegheny River not far from the Golden Triangle. Joseph, to judge from the partnership name, was probably the older.
A partial search through the microfilm records of several census has failed to add any conclusive information on either of the brothers, Joseph and William. We were hoping to find their ages, when they arrived in Pittsburgh, whom they married and the names of their children. We found nothing at all about Joseph. We did find a William, listed in the 1880 census. He was living at 250 Sandusky St., the same address given in the 1866-68 City Directories, for William of the J.W. Fairley Feed Store, and he was bom in Ireland. But it is unlikely that the two Williams are the same: The census William was only 50 years old in 1880 making him eight years younger than Samuel, whereas all our information from other sources indicates that he was older. Besides, the census lists him as a Carpenter.
It seems much more likely that he was a son of Samuel's brother William who came over with his father from Ireland, and that when his father died he moved into the Sandusky home. The census shows that he had a wife, Martha, aged 40, and four children: Edwin, 15; Ida, 7; Mabel, 3: and John, 1. This Edwin born in 1865, was precisely the age of my father, James.
Harwood says that Samuel and his family lived in Pittsburgh for six months before Samuel left for Philadelphia where, the Family Record continues:

Became pastor of the First Congregational Church in Philadelphia in September 1866 having preached from the beginning of the month and accepted their call in the same month. Resigned the pastorate of the church in Philadelphia in October 1867 and came to Wellfleet, Mass., December 1867 and preached on the last of the month - received a unanimous call from the church and Society and settled with the people being installed on _____ 1868.

Harwood's account of the Philadelphia pastorate suggests that it was far from being a happy one. The church, he says, was "made up of disaffected persons who had withdrawn from other religious bodies, but having no elements of harmonious fellowship with one another. Its character was something like that of the motley company that gathered about David at the cave of Adullam, embracing everyone that was discontented." It is not surprising that Samuel resigned after only a few months, and went to Boston seeking another church, but left the family in Philadelphia until he was settled. In Boston, through the ministerial bureau, he learned about a vacancy at Wellfleet, on Cape Cod.
While in Philadelphia, a daughter, Annie Louisa, was born on March 5, 1868.

1868-1873 Minister of the Congregational Church (United Church in Christ) Wellfleet, Mass. A memorial booklet of the church, 1723-1973; Two Hundred and Fifty Years of Worship, reports Samuel Fairley as having been the pastor from 1868 to 1875. This conflicts with the Family Record which ends this period in 1873. The latter is the more likely to be correct. During this pastorate the youngest son, Samuel Cole was born, October l4, 1869. It was a period of great and happy experiences for the older boys as Edwin's Family Chronicle so delightfully shows.

1873-1877 First as acting pastor, and then as the pastor, at the Congregational Church of Berkley, Mass. Berkley is near Taunton, not far from Cape Cod. The Family Chronicle has many details of the boys' activities in Berkley, including their enjoyment of a horse the family owned.
It was while at Berkley that Samuel became a U.S. Citizen, August 24, 1875. The date is on his Certificate of Naturalization.
In June, 1877, he was awarded an honorary M.A. degree from Amherst College, an honor that Harwood says he never referred to. (The degree is recorded in the Amherst College Biographical Record http://www.amherst.edu/~rjyanco94/genealogy/acbiorecord/hono... ) The College can locate no record of it [as of 1977], so the precise date remains unknown. Nor can they locate any citation made at the time, if indeed there was one.

Oct., 1877-Aug., l88l Samuel's last church was in East Falmouth, Mass., again on Cape Cod, where he was the minister at both the East Falmouth and Waquoit Congregational Churches. It was here that he died, August 19, l88l, drowned in Crooked Pond, having gone fishing with Sam, his youngest son then only 12 years old. The wagon they had driven over, had been unhitched and while they were on it, slid down into the pond. Despite Sam's efforts, his father was drowned. Apparently he could not swim. He is buried in East Falmouth.
The Memorial Pamphlet, prepared and published by Rev. Charles E. Harwood, has already been referred to. It includes a Memorial by the Rev. Harwood who had been in Rome when Samuel died; an account of the funeral on August 21; an abstract of the sermon delivered at the funeral by Rev. Isaac Dunham; a Memorial Sermon by Rev. Henry K. Craig preached in the Waquoit church, September 11, l88l which includes many details of Samuel's life; Resolutions adopted by the Cape Cod Association, the North Bristol Congregational Club and the First Congregational Church in Wellfleet; and, finally, excerpts from letters of appreciation.
The man who emerges from this history and these documents was one who built enduring friendships and enjoyed devoted loyalty. He was deeply religious in "a calm and natural way, rather than of the convulsive type," as the Rev. Craig said of him. He was reared, (again Craig) in "an atmosphere of strict and staunch Independency." He characterized himself, throughout his Scottish and English days as an "Independent Minister" - neither Church of England nor Presbyterian. It was this background which may have contributed to his outspokenness which the Tiev. Craig emphasized: "His feelings were strong and easily stirred. If displeased he was mighty in his indignation. None could stay or silence him. Woe to the unhappy one on whom the lightening of his anger fell!" But Craig goes on to say "there was also in him a vein of infinite tenderness." I would guess from these and other appraisals by his admirers that he did not hesitate to denounce evil-doing from the pulpit and no doubt antagonized many in his congregations. His refusal in England to pay the Church tithe is probably typical of one facet of his character. Yet he was clearly not one of the unco gude as the Scots say.
At his death, Caroline, his wife, was left with five children: Her stepson (Joseph) William, 24, had already graduated from Amherst in 1878 and had become himself a minister; Grace Elizabeth, 19; Edwin, 17; James, 16; Annie, 13 and Samuel Cole, 12. There was little money. Only the fashionable big city ministers received adequate salaries in those days.
The family first moved to Newburgh, N.Y., where William was settled as pastor - I believe as an Episcopalian, as he was in later life. He was able to help tide them over. After a year and a half in Newburgh, they moved to Amherst so the boys could follow in Will's footsteps at the College, as they all did. As Caroline's obituary says, "these years in Amherst were years of anxiety and struggle for her," but she succeeded in getting the other three boys through Amherst. The girls did not get to college.
In 1892, Caroline moved to Roseland, N. J., where Edwin was now a minister also. In September 1898 she moved to Nutley, N. J. where James was pastor of his first church. It was at his home that she died, November 19, 1898. She too is buried in East Falmouth where a second, memorial, service was held in the Congregational Church where Samuel had been the minister. The service was conducted by her step-son William, and the four brothers were the pall-bearers. It had been a close-knit and loving family as a sheaf of Caroline's letters to Sam, her youngest, clearly show. In these years, 1893 and 1894, Sam was in his first teaching job at Granger Place, a girls school in Canandaigua, N. Y.

FOOTNOTES
1/ The date of birth is derived from the Harwood Memorial and is confirmed by the Family Record which gives his age at death in 1881 as 59 years. The undertaker's record gives his age at death as 54, clearly erroneous. Edwin's Chronicle mentions two brothers and a sister as having preceded Samuel to the U.S., but supplies no names.
2/ Letter from University of Dublin, 22 September, 1977.
3/ Letter from University of Glasgow, 18 August 1977.
Also, phone conversation with the Archivist of the University.
4/ A brochure of the Newport Congregational Church, on the occasion of their triple Jubilee, 1801 - 1951, states that "Mr. I. Fairley" was the minister during the years, 18U9 - l852. There is little question but that this was Samuel, since Edwin's Chronicle reports that "he studied at the Congregational Church in Newport."
5/ The dates for his ministry at Hexham, March and King's Cliffe are from the Year Book of the Congregational Union of England and Wales. They are consistent with dates from the Family Record of his marriages and the births of his children.
6/ Information from the Family Record, confirmed by his marriage certificate a copy of which I obtained from the Central Records Office in London.
7/ This and subsequent information about Caroline is from her obituary in The Caldwell News (Caldwell, N. J.) for November 26, l898.
8/ Information from the Family Record. For Edwin, we also have a copy of his birth certificate from the Central Records Office in London.
9/ Letter from Reginald Beedham of King's Cliffe who lives on West Street, the same street on which my father, James, was bom.
10/ From copy of his birth certificate.
11/ Rev. Charles E. Harwood, Memorial of Rev. Samuel Fairley, A.M., p. 29.
12/ Notes on our limited census search are in the file.
13/ Correspondence with the Amherst College Archivist.
14/ The Caldwell (N.J.) News, November 26, 1898.
12.

LIST OF DOCUMENTS IN MY FILES
Edwin Fairley's Family Chronicle.
The Family Record - kept by Samuel himself.
Memorial of Rev, Samuel Fairley, A.M., edited by Rev. Charles E. Harwood, Orleans, Mass. Contains a frontispiece photograph of Samuel.
Letter from the University of Dublin, 22 September 1977.
Letters from the University of Glasgow, 18 August 1977 and 27 Sept., 1977.
Excerpt from Newport (Scotland) Congregational Church, Triple Jubilee, 1801 - 1951.
Letter from Graeme Tarbet, present minister of the Newport Congregational Church, 23 August 1977. With photo of interior of Newport church and two clippings from local newspapers concerning our (Lincoln's and Bertha's) visit to Newport in August 1977. A picture of the outside of the church is in our photo album.
Letter from the History Society of the Congregational Union of England and Wales, 12 September 1977.
Copy of Marriage Certificate - Samuel Fairley and Caroline Cole, 26 September l86l.
Copy of Birth Certificate - Edwin Fairley, 7 February 1864.
Memorial Booklet of the United Church of Christ (Congregational)Wellfleet, Mass., 1723 - 1973.
Naturalization Certificate of Samuel Fairley, August 24, 1875.
Letter from Archivist, Amherst College, October l4, 1977.
Letter from the Jones Library, Amherst, Mass., October 2$, 1977.
Fact sheet re Samuel Fairley's death from the Town Clerk, Falmouth, Mass.
Photocopies of those pages of Pittsburgh, Pa. City Directories for l858, 1866-7 and 1867-8 which report Fairleys.
Notes on Fairleys found in census records for 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880.
Letters from Fairleys living in Pittsburgh, Pa. in 1978, in response to our letter of inquiry asking if they had any information which would throw light on Samuel's siblings or descendents in Pittsburgh. We wrote to all Fairleys appearing in the Pittsburgh phone book for 1978. The replies were all negative.
Photograph of Caroline Cole.
Obituary in The Caldwell (N. J.) News, November 26, 1898.
