Re: William A Fancher Marriages

Thanks for your input.

I review every marriage for Jefferson County, July 1939, (all 463 of them) and didn't find a bride's record number that matched Fancher's record number.

Several weeks ago I discovered that the Ancestry.com marriage records for Alabama are dangerously incomplete. There are no entries from anything beyond Morris through Z for the years 1939 backward. Given that, there is no way to determine Fancher's bride's name using Ancestry.com.

I reported this to Ancestry.com and they blamed the shortcomings on the files they received from Alabama.

Given that, I guess I'll have to order the marriage record from Alabama to find out who Fancher married.

You just have to work a little harder. Once you have the marriage date for one spouse (and granted some of Ancestry's database entries only have month and year) and location of the marriage, you search using only the date and location, to turn up possible bride's names. That narrows the search considerably!!

amasonhunter

Joseph, I suggest that you have your yDNA tested at www.familytree.com, where many of our Fanchers have had testing done to prove from whence we came. We have a Fancher DNA project which has project discounts for the testing.
Sorry, I didn't remember this sooner. But this is why I refused to copy Marthe DesFontaines as an ancestor of the Fancher line - the documentation at this website accuses the LDS records of being in error, which I've often found is the case with LDS.

Their records are not verified, anyone can submit and then seal a record without valid citations.

Here's the website - I'm not saying these people have all the answers to the Fanchers - just they make a good point about the validity of LDS as a source of information.

http://www.mindspring.com/~fancher/attachme2.htm

Personally, I remain confused about Martha Patsy Fancher's ancestry and will continue to search. This website was the main reason I left off the siblings, etc. as I had no proof beyond the claim that Richard Fancher and Sarah Journegin were "probably" her parents.

I continued with the line back to the Fanshaw name (William) in the hopes that ancestry.com would turn up a record in their hints that would give me a clue as to their (Martha Patsy Fancher's and her parents') true ancestry. So far I have no solid proof except Martha Patsy herself.

P.S.

I just checked your family tree - actually they do coincide, only I have William Fancher listed as William Fanshaw (Fancer/Fancher). I didn't have Richard Fancher's siblings nor was I certain about Marthe Desfontaines, though I remember coming across that name before and for some reason didn't include it.

As I said, I often get distracted in the middle of researching one line as it leads to another. Thank you - I'll compare your line with mine - it certainly helps to know the siblings!

Any guess to the country of origin for the Fanshaw/Fancher's? I'd read England was most likely. I think I posted a story about the family name under William Fanshaw that I found credible stating they possibly originated in Derbyshire. I just rec'd a DVD of English parish records and intended to search Derbyshire for Fanshaw. Will post if I find anything.

No, I haven't seen it - I'd love it if you could check for me. I'm fairly new to genealogy, so many resources are unknown to me and I have so many brick walls.

I became very curious about Fancher after reading about the MMM and reading that (and hearing from family) that her husband John Myler's surname was probably once Miller (Miller's I believe were also among the victims at MMM, if memory serves).

I hadn't had time to get back to Fancher/Myler research as you know how easy it is to digress to other brick walls, but a related Myler contacted me, so now I'd like to turn my attention to them again.

I apologize in advance if I've missed something obvious, as again, I am fairly new at this. I'm housebound so rely completely on the internet and books, so I very much appreciate learning about the book you mentioned.

I'd revisited the thread and saw your post about Issac Fancher and do want to follow up on that line. Sorry - I've just gotten distracted and am probably trying to research too many lines simultaneously. I'll check out Issac Fancher's family line.

(I've seen her listed mainly as Patsy Fancher though Martha was her first name and Patsy either a nickname or middle name. The marriage license of Fancher/Myler - spelled Miller - is recorded in No.Carolina's marriage records.)
Reopening John E Myler/Patsy Fancher Mystery!

Hi all,

I've read the posts here and wondered if anyone has had any luck with the Myler-Fancher line?

I'm one of the ones who has spelled his middle name "Emerson" but I'm now thinking I'm wrong on that. My cousin, a generation older than I am & who had connection with family, does believe the name was at one time Miler or Miller but isn't certain when that changed.

As for the census records, isn't it usually a recorder who is in charge of the spelling and names are often spelled phonetically? Has anyone actually seen John Myler's signature? Do we have proof of his middle name?

I've also recently been in touch with a family member who corrected me on John's second wife Lucretia. Her name was Lucretia Smith-Jones (not Orr) as some people have supposed. The name Smith comes from her first marriage to Elijah Smith. And the name Jones comes from her marriage to John Jones after John Myler died. However, I'm not certain what her maiden name was, could that be where Orr comes from?

My main concern has been with Martha Patsy Fancher in trying to determine who her siblings were, and if she was related to the Fancher families killed in the MMM?

Patsy Fancher & John E Myler (I'd be grateful for proof of his middle name) were my gggGrandparents, and their son James E. Myler was my ggGrandfather.

Another question: anybody know the countries of origins for the Mylers and Fanchers? Or more about the spelling change of Myler from Miler/Miller?

Thanks for any help or for continued discussion on this line of the Mylers & Fanchers (and Lucretia and her children as well). They certainly are a challenge at the moment and I know many people have been researching them much longer than I have.

Patsy Fancher Miler & Mountain Meadows

Patsy Fancher Miler was the daughter of Richard Fancher and Sarah Jarnigan Fancher. Her siblings were: Isaac Fancher, father to Capt. Alexander Fancher of MMM; Gray Bynum Fancher; James Fancher; Hampton Fancher; & Alexander Fancher.
Patsy Fancher married John Emerson Miler in Stokes County NC in 1804. They immigrated to Overton County TN in about 1806. IN the 1820s, Patsy Fancher Miler, with her husband, two brothers, and others, began their journey to Illinois. In 1838, her brother James left TN and went to Carroll County ARK with Hugh Miller, Patsy's brother in law. Many people attribute a relationship between the Millers in the MMM to the Hugh Miller clan in Carroll County Arkansas. There is NO known relationship between the Millers with the various wagon trains associated with MMM and the Hugh Miller clan of Carroll County ARK. The Millers involved in the 1857 wagon trains were not related to Patsy Fancher Miler.
This Miler family has their name listed as Miler, Miller, and later, Myler. John Emerson Miler Sr always spelled his name Miler. When he died, his son was already spelling the name Myler and that is how it ended up on his gravestone as Myler. The Hugh Miller line is generally always spelled Miller.
Will Bagley's book on MMM is brilliant, however, during his initial research of families involved with the several MMM Trains, he relied on a resource who claimed to be knowledgeable about the Fancher genealogy - to include writing a book or two - however Will unknowingly was sucked into the charms of a reporter who knew nothing about the MMM families and just made it up as he went along for personal gratification and notoriety.
The only known connection between Patsy Miler and the MMM is that Captain Alexander Fancher was her nephew. Also, since there were many different trains involved, some broke off at different points and it is possible that there were relatives from Illinois who made it back after they visited the gold fields. An example of that is the Poteet Train.

I commented on your other post and then looked at your tree. You state that Martha was the daughter of Richard Fancher and Journegin, which would make her the sister of Isaac Fancher who was the father of Captain Alexander Fancher. So that would make him her nephew.

Her father Richard served in the American Revolutionary War.

Have you seen the book "The Fancher Family" by William Hoyt Fancher. I have it at home and can look to see if there is anything about Martha in it.

When was she born and do you know her parents? Alexander Fancher had two brothers - John went to California before 1850 and Richard moved to Illinois (this is my husband's line). Neither of them had daughters named Martha. Alexander did but she did not survive that fateful trip.

I dont know many Fanchers out at all. All I know of is my grandpa, grandma, uncle, aunts, and my father. I have done some research and all i get is stuff like the Fanchers are French and onetime i got one that said that they were Jews. I also paid for this one thing that said the many of the Fanchers where killed in WW2 by Hitler and it also said they were French to. so if you have any info. me it would be grateful. Thank you for taking your time to reads.

Dolly Fancher isn't in Paul Fancher's book. Richard Fancher of Bibb Co. had a son John who had a daughter named Dolly, but she supposedly married Benjamin Mitchell in 1830 and died in 1849.

I did a little looking and found Alfred and Dolly Johnson in the 1850 census living in Attala Co., MS close to Jeremiah Fancher (a son of Richard of Bibb Co.) and Middleton Pool, who married Mary Ann Fancher (daughter of Henry Fancher and granddaughter of Richard Fancher), Johnson Fancher (son of Samuel) and other Fancher relatives. The census puts her birth at 1823 which would make her 15 when she married. That should be about right if Samuel had to give his consent.

I don't know whose daughter she is. I don't think she is Richard Fancher's daughter or granddaughter because she isn't mentioned in his will. What children and birthdates do you have for Samuel Fancher? According to the 1830 census, Samuel Fancher had one daughter born 1825-1830 and two born 1815-1820 still at home. I have read where Samuel also gave consent for his daughter Nancy's marriage to Willis Davis in 1842. Doesn't that mean Nancy would have to be born 1826 or later? So she would be the youngest daughter in the 1830 census. Other daughters that I have for him are Winnie (b. 1812, m. 1829 - so she wouldn't be with Samuel in 1830 census), Elizabeth (b~1813, m. 1833), and Rebecca (b. unk, m. 1849). If Elizabeth and Rebecca are the two older girls, then Rebecca would have been married when she was around 34!

Another thing to consider is that Samuel was quite old when he married Phebe Adams - around 40. It is possible that he had a previous wife. If he had children from this first marriage, they may not have come to Bibb Co. Dolly could the daughter of a son from this first marriage and Samuel's granddaughter!

I am a Fancher researcher in Bibb Co, AL. I am also photographing all the loose records in the Probate Office - trying to get them online. . .

I found a consent for marriage for Dolly Fancher to marry Alfred Johnson in 1838. The consent was signed by Samuel Fanchier with an X.

I do not have a Dolly/Dorothy as a child of Samuel - although her birth date would "fit" his kids.

Hi there,
Kate is a little bit of a mystery to me, so any information you can give me would be great.

John Emmett Fancher was born July 1845 in Bibb Co. and died April 25, 1927 in Brierfield. He married Nancy Milam Lisle on Jan. 10, 1868 in Bibb Co. Before that he was a private in the Civil War in Co. B of the 20th Reg., Alabama Infantry. Nancy Milam was born March 1, 1843 or 1846 in Alabama and died Feb. 14, 1892. She was married first to Wiley T. Lisle on Nov. 24, 1859 in Greene Co., AL. They had one son, John Morgan Lisle, born Oct. 13, 1862, and then Wiley Lisle was killed in 1862 possibly in the Battle of Chickamauga.

John E. and Nancy Fancher had 8 children that I am certain of: Fred Shelby (Aug. 28, 1869), Lucille D. (~1871) m. F. D. Robinson, James Newton (Feb. 1, 1873), Laura O'Brien (Sept. 21, 1876) m. John Underwood, twins William Sank and Robert Moode (Aug. 21, 1878), Jasper P. (March 15, 1883) and Winifred Lee (~1884) m. John Gardner. Paul Fancher, who has written an extensive book on the Fancher family, says that they had two other daughters, Mary Ann (m. Ben Kizziah and Sam Lindsay)and Kate (m. George Dixson), and I believe him but I have never been able to find any more information about them or anything that definitely ties them with John and Nancy Fancher. Is it your understanding that Kate was their daughter?

John and Nancy's son James Newton was my husband's great-grandfather. I have a lot more information on the Fanchers and Milams. If you give me your email address I can figure out how to send it to you.

Re: Fancher / Fansher Families in NW Missouri

Hi, just discovered your note.

I also am a decendant of John and Nancy Fansher through their son David and his son Benjamin. Benjamin was my great grandfather.

I would be happy to share any info that I have on this line down to the current generation. John and Nancy is as far back as I have been able to find so far. Have you found anything further back than them?

Best,

Rick

Re: Thomas P Fancher

The information listed above for the parents of Sarah Journegin (Jarnigan), wife of Richard Fancher (David, Richard, William), is incorrect. The best evidence to date records that her parents were Capt. John (Jack) Jarnigan and Mary Bynum, elder sister of Gray Bynum. Other siblings of Sarahs would include Thomas, John, William, Rhoda (Witt), and Faitha (Kimbrough.

Re: Supposed French Connection

According to the history of the Fanchers/Fanchee/Fancy, those descendants of Nekemian Fancher and Amy Van Flect/Van Vlict descended from exiled French-Hugenots. William Fancher was the son of Nekemiah, and married Lucy Stark. Henry Fancher was the son of William and Lucy Stark. Extremely difficult to trace French-Hugenots.

William Fancher born 06 JULY 1764 in Poundridge, Westchester County, NY, served in Captain Bouton's Company of Colonel Crane's Regiment of New York Troops in 1781; shot by accident and wounded in both feet, crippled for life; pensioned from Luzerne County, PA; went to Delaware County, OH about 1810 from Luzerne County; died 05 FEB 1829 in Delaware County, OH; burial at Fancher Cemetery. There is a cemetary marker.

According to the History of Delaware Co., OH, "Brief History of State of Ohio," appears the following ..William Fancher with his wife and a large famly of sons and daughters, emigrated from Luzerne County, PA to Harlem in 1810, and purchased a tract of about 1,000 acres in the south part of the Township. Soldier in war of Revolution, but the particulares are not known. They were all patriotic and brave, and served their country faithfully, and all permitted to return at the close. This family were so conspicuous and performed so important a part in the early settlement...we regret our limited facts are so brief.

Jinny - in sorting out our Myler/Miler/Millers - have you run across anything that gives a clue as to where the Emberson/Emerson name comes from? John's brother Hugh has Emberson's all down his line, too. I was thinking this was some type of maternal name, but I have looked all through Virginia for a link with no luck.

For all the Myler researchers - it is important to remember that this Miler family has spelled their names different ways, depending on who wrote the census and how it evolved. When John Miler married Patsy Fancher, he signed his name Miler (one L). The majority of his children used that spelling. His brother Hugh used two L's. With regard to Mary or Margaret Fancher marrying Mr. Cole, I will look to see if that could be a daughter of Alexander Fancher, brother to Patsy and Isaac, Gray Bynum, Hampton, and James. Oh yeah, Patsy Fancher Miler's parents were Richard Fancher and Sarah Jarnigan. Alexander did have a daughter Mary but I think I have accounted for her - but there was also a Margaret that might work.
