Old Fancy Photo - New Hampshire

I recently purchased a bunch of old photos. One of the photos shows a young woman and is written on the reverse "[unreadable] Fancy, George's mother". The photo was taken at a photo studio in Nashua, New Hampshire, likely around 1900. Attached is a copy of the photo.

If this is one of your ancestors, please contact me.

Randy
Webster, Texas
Dear Alan Speakman,

I've just read your reply to Gayle Fancey (who I believe is
my cousin).

My branch of the family moved south from Oenida to Washington, DC, with my grandfather, Oliver Franklin Fancey, during World War II. My father Donald Fancey (1912-2003) told me that both his grandfathers George Fancey and Arthur W. Pickard had emigrated from England. One of Oliver's brothers, Howard was the chief of police in Utica.
I have his mahoganny riot stick. Howard left Utica to take part in the Klondike gold rush in the early 1900's and was never heard from again.

I would love any information that you can share with me, and I will be delighted to reciprocate.

I live in Baltimore, Maryland. My email address is dyanefancey@gmail.com.

Thanks,

Dyane (Diane) Fancey

Hi Gayle,

I have just seen your 2004 note, so you may already know what Follows.

I have a Benjamin Fancy b abt 1786, and son George b abt 1825 on my tree. I think they are almost certainly your men, because George's sister Elizabeth emigrated to New York with her four sons in 1869 following the death of her husband James R Beckington. They went to live in Oneida (presumably because George was there) and two of the boys married at the Calvary Episcopal Church in Utica.

I was unaware of the Ben/George emigration and am hugely interested in anything you have.

I have masses of Fancy/Fancey history going back to Christopher Fancy in 1612 - includung one line in Canada, which you may know about already. This was started by Stephen Fancy in 1837. He jumped ship in newfoundland whilst being deported for stealing a pair of trousers!

I am in the UK, on the west coast north of Liverpool.

Cheers

Alan

Gayle
Benjamin belongs to the same branch as Sandy and Loretta. His family had an eventful life in England. I can let you have information about his ancestry back to the great grandfather of Benjamin. What kind of thing would you like to know? I am very interested in your own ancestry as I am researching a one name study of all the Fancy and Fancey families everywhere, including daughters' descendants (an iumpossible task, perhaps!). My email address is will.fancy@unisonfree.net if you would like to reply direct.

Will Fancy

Gayle, I know my Fancey line came from Dorset. I know there are alot of Fancey/Fancy in England. I know my Stephen Fancey born born 1823 died 1890, his father was David Fancey and Elizabeth Skinner they came from Dorset. Stephen age 14 was on a boat for hard labor or something and jumped off and landed at Change Island. This Stephen was my GGgrandfather his daughter Mary Hannah was a midwife and was the mother of my Grandmother. My mother was born at Fogo Island Nf 1920 so I have lots of nfld roots.Have you seen the Lds.org site they have lots of info also I found some of my info. online I went to Google and typed in Skinner and found Fancey and Skinner info I didnt have. Your Fancey line could be related. I don't know if any other Fancey or Skinner families came to Nf or if they stayed there. Thanks Sandy

I know that my FANCY/FANCEY family emigrated from England. I have no proof of their origin. Family "lore" suggests Lancashire. From census records I know that they arrived in the US in 1850.

Benjamin FANCY/FANCEY(b.1786) and wife Mary(b.1791), came to the US with sons William(b.1814), Joseph(b.1820) and George(b.1828). They are on the 1860 census for New York, Oneida Co., Utica, Ward 7. They occupy dwellings #374, 381 and 373 respectively.

The name on must census records prior to 1900 appears as FANCY. Later records have the name as FANCEY.

I haven't made a connection to Change Island FANCEY, nor do I have information about them before they came to NY.

I would love to learn more. I'd be happy to share what little I have with you.

Gayle FANCEY Wignall
doghouse4@cox.net

I have been researching FANCY/FANCEY, particularly in Oneida Co., NY - especially Utica and Rome, NY.

The line begins with Benjamin FANCY b. 1786 in England and son George FANCY, b. June 1830 in England. (Welch)

Next in the line are George FANCEY,JR. b. March 1860, NY and son Oliver Franlkin FANCEY, b. May 1890, Utica, NY.

Oliver FANCEY was my grandfather.

Any information would be appreciated. I would be glad to share what little I have on this family.

New Book on Fancy-Fancher-Fanshaw

“The Fancher Family Origins” shows that the Fancher Family in America descends from the Fancy/Fanshaw Family of Long Island, New York. It presents William Fancy/Fanshaw, Jr., of Setauket, Brookhaven Town, Long Island, Suffolk County, New York as the father of the six Colonial Fanchers who were found in Stamford, and Stratford, Fairfield County around 1730, and Branford, New Haven County, Connecticut around 1720.

This work also shows that the spelling of the surnames of Richard Fancher, John Fancher, and David Fancher was predominately “Fanshaw” in the early Connecticut records. It establishes the connection between the Fanshaw, Fancher, and Fancy spellings of our family surname, and presents convincing new evidence that the origin of the Fancher family name in America was the English Fanshawe surname.
The “Fancher Family Origins” by written by myself and Paul B. Fancher (also the author of “Richard Fancher (1700-1764) of Morris Co., NJ.”) The entire text can be viewed at my website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wallner and also at Paul’s website: http://www.mindspring.com/~fancher/.

Copies of this book can be found in the LDS Library in Salt Lake City, 48 State Libraries, all of the genealogical and historical societies in the areas where William Fancy and the Colonial Fanchers lived, the NEHGS, NYG&B, the DAR Library in Washington, D.C, and numerous other repositories. Please note that there are no copies of this book available for sale.

Alison C. Wallner
