There's an Otis Farnum on the 1854 Cedar Rapids, Linn county, Iowa Census
It says there are 7 males in the household and 2 females
2 are 'voters' - which would mean 2 adult males, 1 listed as Militia - so it's likely that it's two families living together.

Not sure if it's the correct person, but it might help narrow down a birth location for Melvin in Iowa.

Joy
MELVIN FARNHAM AGE 10 IS FOUND IN THE HOUSEHOLD OF THOMAS HANDLEY & FAMILY IN LOCHNANE, BROWN CO,KANSAS. HIS PLACE OF BIRTH IS LISTED AS IOWA. THIS FAMILY IS ON THE 1860 CENSUS IN CAPIOMA,NEMAHA CO,KS.....ONLY MELVIN IS IN ERROR LISTED AS A FEMALE. IN 1862/63 OTIS LEFT KS TO RETURN TO MICH AFTER THE DEATH OF HIS FATHER IN MAR 1862.
Samuel & Alice Farnham / Farnum Mystery

Hello - If anyone can assist me with any additional information on the following Farnham line I would greatly appreciate it.

Samuel L Farnham
B: Oct 1854 - Kansas or Illinois, USA
D: unknown *It is noted in Katherine Farnham's Obituary (her death: Oct. 13, 1957) that both of her parents were predeceased.
* Samuel is most likely an orphan - 1900 Census states "unknown" for parent’s place of birth. This would explain the spelling of his actual surname might be Farnum(“lost in translation” as an orphan).
* At this stage, the last known location of Sam is in Goshen, Wyoming in 1930. He was living with Irma, Robert (Irma’s son) & Zeoda in a rented home.
* Various listed occupations for Sam include; Stone Mason, Quarry Man & Farmer.
* Samuel Farnham's parents are unknown.

Wife - Alice W Farnham
B: Feb 1873 - Kansas City, USA
D: unknown
* At this stage, the last known location of Alice is in Goshen, Wyoming in 1920. At this time they were living in a rented home and the following children were listed as still living at home; Clyde, Alton, Irma & Yeoda.
* Parents of Alice Farnham and her maiden name are unknown.
* possible maiden name; Linebough

Samuel & Alice Farnham’s Relationship Events
•	Marriage - 1894
•	Divorce - abt 1925 * 1930 Census notes Samuel's marital status as "divorced".

Children
Charlie (aka Charley) O Farnham
Son
B: Jun 1885 - Illinois, USA
D: unknown at this time

James C Farnham
Son
B: Apr 1887 - Illinois, USA
D: unknown at this time

Clarence M Farnham
Son
B: Dec 1894 - Kansas, USA
D: unknown at this time

Clyde Farnham
Son
B: abt 1895 - Illinois, USA
D: unknown at this time

Samuel Farnham
Son
B: Jul 1898 - Kansas, USA
D: unknown at this time * I believe may have passed away as an infant

Katherine (aka Katie, Katy) L Farnham
Daughter
B: Nov. 23, 1900 - Moline, Kansas, USA
D: Oct. 13, 1957 - Cass City, Michigan, USA
Marriage: abt 1929 - Spouse: Thomas Nichols (B: 3 Jan. 1900 Michigan, USA D: 1 Nov. 1967 Detroit, Michigan, USA) at age 22 in Omaha, Nebraska, USA

Alton Farnham
Son
B: abt 1900 - Kansas, USA
D: unknown at this time

Loren Farnham
Son
B: abt 1904 - Kansas, USA
D: unknown at this time

Irma (aka Erma) Farnham
Daughter
B: abt 1908 - Kansas, USA
D: unknown at this time
Marriage: abt 1925 - Spouse: Johnson at age 17
Children: abt 1925 - Son: Robert
* I’ve found a Death record for a “Irma Pearl Farnham Johnson” with the birth date of 21 Dec. 1907 in Kansas, USA and died in Orange County, California on 8 Sept. 1985. Her father’s surname is listed as Farnham and mother’s maiden name as Linebough. I will further investigate.

Zeoda (aka Zeota) Farnham
Daughter
B: abt 1915 - Kansas, USA
D: unknown at this time
Marriage: abt 1929 - Spouse: Culp at age 15

If you can provide information on any of the mentioned family members it would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,
Stephanie
Hi Becky:
It's been a while since we last talked. I found an Asa Farnham and his wife Elizabeth had a daughter Jane(?) Elizabeth , born February 25, 1827. They also had a son, Asa Antione (I cannot make out the next name), born May 6th, 1830. This is according to the Record of Vital Statistics, Book 5, page 62 in the Ashford, CT records.

Don't know if Jane Elizabeth is Ruhamah Farnham?

Also the North Mississippi Historical Society site is no longer available, to see the Farnham house, which by the way no longer exists, go here. http://www.flickr.com/photos/10609881@N07/4694312765/
Todd Hein

Charlotte was my grandmother, my dad's mother. She married Pirl Edge. He died after being injured while working for the city of Pierre, SD. They were laying water pipe and there was a cave in. He died later of his injuries. She then married Claude Blaisdell. They had 3 daughters.

My family tree is under Kandy Edge. I will see what information I can come up with for Hattie's family.
Harriet "Hattie" Farnham is my Great Grandmother. Her bithday is 14 November 1856 and she was born in Garnavillo Iowa. She married Armanus Kitchen 12 November 1883 in Minneapolis Minnesota. Armanus was born 17 August 1859 and died 20 March 1944. I too am researching Hattie's side of the family. Her father Henry C was married to Rebecca A Killam. The Killam family is easy to research but it seems Henry's last name is spelled Farnum in many places. Hope this helps and keep me updated if you find more as well. The Edge last name came into our portion of the family with there daughter Charlotte who married and Edge, who later died and then a Blaisdell, my grandfather.

Raymond D. Farnham family in 1930's (michigan)

I'm having trouble locating my great grandfather and his family in the 1930's! For some reason they do not appear on the 1930 census records, nor any other records during that time. I'm not sure where else to look, I've tried numerous data bases to no avail. I *think* they would still have been in Michigan since they were there later on (in the 40's and beyond)

Anyone have any tips or had better luck than me? Raymond was born in 1884, his wife was Effie Smith and they had four children. I was told they were in Shiawassee County but I can't find them on any indexes.

Thanks!!!

Beth

If you haven't already consulted it, you should know that there is extensive information on your Dexter in volume 3 of Russell C. Farnham's "The New England Descendants of the Immigrant Ralph Farnum..." published in 2005. This book gives Dexter's ancestry in detail, much discussion of Dexter and Roxina, plus info on their children and grandchildren. Nothing beyond the grandchildren.

Hi:

Thank you for sharing the information. Where did you find the source of Ruhamah Farnham Corbin's father being listed as William Farnham? Were you able to locate a birth record, church record or original marriage record for Ruhamah Farnham?

Levi Corbin (Ruhamah Farnham Corbin's son)- description in his military record is 5'4, black eyes and dark complexion. Ruhamah Corbin's husband's military record also describes his complexion as dark (hazel eyes). The question remains, what did "dark" mean to the recorder: Native American, African American or dark from a farmer's tan.

I have also been given the information that William Farnham (b. circa 1820) is Pequot/Nipmuc Indian.

It sounds as if you may have solved the great Indian Farnham mystery. Wish my grandmother were alive to share it with her. Ms. Ruhamah Farnham was my grandmother's great grandmother.

I am interested in knowing if your friend (descendant of Jermiah Corbin)knew of her Native American lineage growing up and if it was honored?

I can be contacted offline at blathinbeag@aol.com and am happy to share my decade of research with the family history center.

Thank you,
Becky

Hi Becky, I, too, am trying to link William Farnham/Farnam/ Farnum to a friend's family tree. Ruhamamh was born in Ashford, Windham County, CT to William Farnham. She & sister sarah Ann married twin brothers, Jeremiah & Hezekiah. They are listed as white The sisters are listed as dark, & one page lists Will as Indian & yet another lists William& wife as Mohegan Indians. they all were born in Windom County (Eastford, Ashford & Hampton) I'm friends w/ the grand-daughter of Mable Corbin, daughter of Jermiah.
I am a volunteer historian at FHC, Mormon Church, Mystic, CT

Re: Maine Farnhams

I've just found a little bit more.

April 11, 1893 C-G – T.J. Brown, whose dwelling was recently burned, will commence at once to rebuild. He needs and deserves the assistance of his neighbors and friends. Mr. Farnham, who lived in the same house and whose wife was Mr. Brown’s daughter, lost everything. He has moved his family to Hurricane. (don't know if this is one of yours ??)

Don't know if some of these are yours, but I know for sure that Bert is:

July 17, 1894 C-G – "As reported in last week’s Courier-Gazette, A.D. Farnham of the West Meadows, this city, is the father of seven girls and five boys, all hale and hearty. Is there a family in the city or county that can exceed that record?"

April 30, 1895 C-G – "West Rockland – Herbert Farnham has begun work on the cellar to his new house. It will be a six-room house, 12 feet post, and 14 feet rafters, and he hopes to have it ready to move into some time in June."

June 25, 1895 C-G – West Rockland – One of the inmates of the almshouse ran away Monday, the 17th, and the mountain was searched by Mr. Perry and a party but no trace of the woman could be found. Wednesday afternoon Harry Farnham found her hid in the bushes, and after two or three hours, coaxing succeeded in landing her at home, safe, but in an almost exhausted condition. Mr. Perry paid him for his trouble and quickly gave the poor deranged creature food and drink which she had been without since she left Monday."

Sept. 17, 1895 C-G – "Mrs. Cookson is having a house built in the vicinity of Birch Street. It is closed in and being clapboarded. The house is 1½ stories and 18 x 23 feet. J.M. Hall does the work. J.M. Farnham is having the foundation laid for a new house on the same street."

July 23, 1898 C-G – For Sale: A large 8 room house with dry cellar; lot 60 x 90, located No. 18 Birch Street, near North Main Street. The house is entirely new, has never been occupied, and is offered for sale at less than cost. Address J.N. Farnham, 32 Cedar Street.

Jan. 14, 1899 C-G – To Let – A large 8 room house with dry cellar; lot 60 x 90; located No. 18 Birch Street, near North Main Street. The house is entirely new, has never been occupied, and is offered for sale at less than cost. Address J.N. Farnham, 32 Cedar Street.

July 8, 1905 C-G – "Master Benjamin Farnham & Co. had a large audience at their circus July 3. The show tent was filled with old and young and the performance was, to say the least, very startling and well worth the two cent admission charged. The boys proudly declare that they cleared 22 cents apiece."

Farnham’s big band meet was the feature of the week in Rockland, 156 band musicians parading the streets as one band. The parade was made up of the Rockland Military Band, Belfast Band, North Waldoboro Band, Vinalhaven Band, and Hurricane Island Band, with musicians from many other towns. Also in the parade were the fire companies, business floats and the U.S.S. Texas Band. Dinner and supper were served for the bandsmen at Oakland Park. (A few years ago (1965) Ben Farnham with whom I used to go to school paid a visit to Rockland and told me all about this Band Meet which was staged by his father. Herbert D. Farnham, who was one of Rockland’s fine musicians, playing about any instrument put into his hands. Ben spent some time going through the old files of the courier looking for some mention of the Band Meet. Don’t know whether he ever found it, but now he will read what is written here.) (1905)

H.D. Farhnam now occupies the house at 47 Granite Street which he recently bought from George E. Cross. The location is an excellent one for his music business and it is his intention to fit up a large room in the upper story of the stable where he will instruct his pupils. Charles D. Huntley has bought Mr. Farnham’s Oliver Street property. (1910)

The procession was headed by R.B. Hall’s band with Bert Farnham as leader. In those days it was customary when anyone had visitors from out of town to take them to the Nellie Ulmer limerock quarry at the head of Pleasant Street (our present [1970] dump and let them gaze from the iron bridge down into the 375-foot quarry, where men working at the bottom looked like flies. It was the deepest limerock quarry in the world. The Secret Service men were against it, but both the President and Mrs. Taft insisted on getting out of the car and watch a derrick load of workmen being lowered to the bottom just for the guests to see. (1910)

Oct. 1, 1895 – The Free Baptist Circle meets next Thursday evening with Mrs. Joseph Farnham, Cedar Street.

You are quite welcome. I'm sure we have a fair amount of other stuff (at te historical society) at least about Bert, as we have several historical articles talking about the history of different bands in the general area. I"m pretty sure there MAY be pics in band uniforms, too.

I have no connection to this family. I'm just posting info. I've stumbled across while doing other research. This is from a Courier-Gazette issue referring back to the year 1870:

"Ben Farnham, formerly of Rockland and son of the late Bert Farnham, Rockland’s famous band leader and musician, asked some time ago about the first band to be formed in Vinalhaven. The story of Vinalhaven’s first band appeared in the Courier-Gazette in the issue of Feb. 18, 1941, and was taken from the files of the Gazette and the Vinalhaven Echo. According to the story the band was formed over 100 years ago, in the fall of 1870. Some of the original members were: Timothy Arey, Edwin Roberts, Woster S. Vinal, Charles Roberts, Austin B. Vinal, Rufus B. Vinal, Rufus Arey, Louis Coombs, Owen P. Lyons, Charles Lane, George G. Webster, William V. Lane, Charles K. Winslow, Thomas J. Lyons, John L. Ingerson, Jesse Forbes, and John Webster. (1870)

Hi Linda,
My Grandmother Lusha Burgoyne was a Farnham from Lake Placid. I spent some time in Brattleboro with great Aunt Cele and Aunt Kaye when I was growing up. You must be married to their brother Bill's son. I too am trying to trace the ancestry back on this side of the family. I found a newspaper account of William Henry's untimely death, but not much else. Your posting is 6 years old at this point, any developments?

Regards,
Shelly

I would refer you to “The New England Descendants of the Immigrant Ralph Farnum of Rochester, Kent County, England, and Ipswich, Massachusetts” by Russell C. Farnham. It is a massive, magisterial, three-volume work, published in 1999. It contains most of the line you describe, except for the last three generations. It does have more detail on many of the men in your line, and it will correct several errors. For example, the first in the line, Henry 1 Farnham, could hardly have died in Ontario, Canada in 1619; it didn’t exist. The date you quoted was not the date he died but rather the date on which his will was proved. And the date of death of his son Ralph 2 is unknown, but probably occurred in the early 1640’s. You show instead the date of death of Ralph 3. etc.

Hi. I have been offline for a little while. But I can clarify this about "Charles and Lois". This charles was my mother's oldest brother, and the son of Charles Sr. and Mary Ellen Carpenter. He was known as "Bud". Uncle Bud died in Brooksville Florida about 10 years ago, and was married to Alma Shiver ever since I can remember, which has been about 70 years ago for that relationship.) I have been trying to find Oliver's father, and where he was born at in Vermont. If you can contact me, I can give you informetion; some you may have, and some you may not have. BTW. This "DRAppling" that you see at the top was the former owner of this computer, and I have to make the correction on that, when I figure out how to do it. Hope I have found some new relatives!1 We never owned a car when I was growing up, so when we had family visitors, it had to be those that owned a car. My family was raied in Florida, but we knew all of my mother's 3 brothers, and 1 of her sisters from the marriage to Mary Ellen, who was his second wife; plus Aunt Rosie and Uncle (Thomas) Dewey from the forst marriage to Mary Harrelson. Also just recently found a cousin who is the son of my mother's first cousin, and they live right here in Florida!! Would love to hear from you. Joanie Taylor Brown (in Pasco County Florida). alaga1@msn.com is my email address.
