As it turns out West Virginia has many Farquhar's that settled here back in early 1700s. Maybe you can connect to a West Virginia settler and then maybe trace it back to Scotland. Good Luck.

George Farquhar, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire - Bigamist

The following articles are taken from The Aberdeen Journal, dated May & June 1882, and I have replicated them here in case they are of help or interest to anyone else. I have no known connection to the family.

The Aberdeen Journal, dated Saturday, May 13, 1882

A SEAMAN CHARGED WITH BIGAMY – Before Sheriff Thomson, in the Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Tuesday, George Farquhar (42), a seaman, residing in Peterhead, was examined on a charge of bigamy. He is alleged to have married a woman in 1867 in London who is still alive, and another in June, 1881, at Peterhead. He was committed to prison for further examination.

The Aberdeen Journal, dated Wednesday, June 7, 1882

THE CASES FOR ABERDEEN CIRCUIT (other cases are recorded)

ALLEGED BIGAMY
George Farquhar, seaman, Peterhead, is to be charged at the same Court with the crime of bigamy, in so far as (the libel proceeds) “you the said George Farquhar having, on the 28th day of October, 1867, within or near All Saint’s Church, Rotherhithe, in the parish of All Saints, and county of Surrey, England, been lawfully married to Emma Jane Terry, daughter of, and then residing with, the now deceased Jas. Terry, shipwright, in or near the parish of All Saints aforesaid, and now or lately residing in or near Blair Street, Bromley-by-Bow, in the county of Middlesex, England, the marriage ceremony having been performed by the now deceased Reverend Robert Jones, then residing in or near the parish of All Saints aforesaid, and you having thereafter lived and cohabited with the said Emma Jane Terry as your wife, and she being still alive, and your marriage with her still subsisting, you did, on the 12th day of June, 1881, within or near the East Parish Church, Peterhead, in the parish of Peterhead, and county of Aberdeen, wickedly and feloniously enter into a matrimonial connection with Mary Ann Robertson, daughter of, and then residing with, David Robertson, vintner, in or near Constitution Street, Peterhead aforesaid, and now or lately residing in or near Ugie Street there, the marriage ceremony having been performed by the Reverend John Buie Davidson, then and now or lately minister of the said East Parish Church, and residing in or near Peterhead aforesaid; and you did thereafter live and cohabit with the said Mary Ann Robertson as your wife; and this you did well knowing the said Emma Jane Terry, your wife, was still alive, and that your marriage with her still subsisted.”

The Aberdeen Journal, Saturday, June 17, 1882

ABERDEEN CIRCUIT COURT (again other cases are recorded)

BIGAMY BY A PETERHEAD SEAMAN

George Farquhar, seaman, Peterhead, was charged with the crime of bigamy. It was alleged that on 12th June 1881, he entered into a matrimonial connection with Mary Ann Robertson, daughter of David Robertson, vintner, Constitution Street, Peterhead, and now residing in Ugie Street there, while his wife, Emma Jane Terry, whom he married in London on 28th October 1867, was still alive, and while the said marriage was still subsisting; and that he thereafter lived and cohabited with the said Mary Ann Robertson, well knowing that the said Jane Terry, his wife, was still alive.
Prisoner pleaded guilty.
Mr Hay, instructed by Mr J.R. Young, submitted that this was not a case of bigamy of an aggravated kind at all, and the Advocate-Depute would concur that it was as mild a case as could possibly be.
Lord Deas – The Advocate-Depute is no judge of that. (Laughter).
Lord Deas – George Farquhar, you have pleaded guilty to the charge, which is a very serious one. There would be an end to all the bonds of society if men were to marry another wife, the first one being still alive, merely because he has got to say that they could not agree, and that is all you say in your declaration.
Mr Hay said that the Advocate-Depute would confirm him in saying this was a light case of bigamy. I do not think the Advocate –Depute or any body else would confirm an idea of that kind. It is very serious for a man, without making the slightest inquiry whether his first wife is living or dead, to marry, in the face of this, another woman. I have great difficulty in not imposing upon you a very heavy sentence indeed. You are a man of intelligence evidently, and to say that you thought you were at liberty to marry another woman could not be taken off the hands of any person of common sense. Although I cannot say it is a light case of bigamy I am disposed to give you as light a sentence as in any sort of reason I can possibly do. I believe a period of imprisonment, not of very long endurance, will be just as likely to have as good an effect upon you as a much longer period, and perhaps a better effect I therefore sentence you to imprisonment for the period of
NINE MONTHS.

(Notes: The marriage record for 1881 in the District of Peterhead in the County of Aberdeen shows the following:
No. 29; 1881 on the Twelfth day of June at East Parish Church, Peterhead, after Banns according to the Forms of the Church of Scotland. (Signed) George Farquhar, Seaman, (Bachelor), age 40, residence: 6 Albion Street, Peterhead. Parents: Robert Farquhar, Blacksmith (deceased) & Elizabeth Farquhar ms Cowie. (Signed) Mary Ann Robertson, Domestic Servant, (Spinster), age 38, residence: 17 Constitution Street, Peterhead. Parents: David Robertson, Vintner, & Jessie Robertson ms McPherson. Witnesses: (signed) John B. Davidson, Minister of East Parish, Peterhead; (signed) Robt. N. Castel, witness, & Wm. G. Taylor, witness. Registered 1881, June 14 at Peterhead by Alex. Robertson, Registrar. The record is stamped on LH margin – Bigamy.

According to the IGI Robert Farquhar married Elizabeth Cowie 24 December 1837, Peterhead. Robert may have been born about 1814 at Longside, Aberdeenshire, son of William Farquhar & Elizabeth Henderson, and died 16 February 1856, Peterhead, but this information is not confirmed and would require checking. Children, according to the IGI, were:
Elizabeth Henderson Farquhar b. 18 November 1838, Peterhead;
George Farquhar, (possibly) b. 16 December 1839, Peterhead (needs to be checked);
Jean Cowie Farquhar, b. 11 August 1841, Peterhead; and
Catherine Ann Farquhar, b. 20 April 1843, Peterhead.

Again according to the IGI - David Robertson married Janet McPherson 22 September 1842, Peterhead. Children (IGI) were:
Mary Ann Robertson, bap. 2 January 1843, Peterhead;
James Robertson, bap. 29 January 1845, Peterhead; and
Janet Robertson, bap. 7 Feb. 1851, Peterhead.)
Hello, I know this was written a long long time ago, but I came across it whilst searching for my 2x great grandfather James Morrison Fulcher. He was born in Glasgow (i think) in abt 1808. I have records of him being in Australia from 1855, when he has his first child here. Amazingly it seems he did not exist anywhere in the world until that time, which leads me to belive "Fulcher" has been changed over the years. His middle name Morrison I suspected must be his mothers, or grandmothers maiden name. I had been looking into the name Farquhar as a possible early variation of Fulcher... and hence found you. I see you have a Morrison / Farquhar link so though it is at least worth seeing if any of my details make any sense to you? Sorry if its a bit random, I really am at my wits end with this search! Thanks for taking the time to read this, kind regards, Teena

I am also looking into the Farquhar family from the area of Dundee or Rattray/Blairgowrie or Arbroath. My grandfather Cargill's middle name was Farquhar. His half brother William's surname had been Menmuir but he seems to have adopted the surname Farquhar.

William Farquhar was born 13 Feb 1860 in New Rattray.

Trying to determine where the Farquhar name fits into the family.

Thanks,
Amy

Hi,
It's been a while since you posted your query, and you may already have answers to some of your questions. However, I just came across your posting. I have been researching Farquhars for over 40 years, and I do have a chart on this branch of the family.
Briefly, on your line, Joseph Willis Farquhar (b. 12 Sept. 1918, Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the son of Joseph Willis Farquhar (b. 24 May 1893, Gloucester NJ) and Julia Kelly Cook (b. 5 July 1893 Philadelhia PA). They were married on 26 July 1915 and had one daughter and four sons.
Joseph Willis Farquhar (b. 24 May 1893, Gloucester NJ) was the son of Joseph Edward Farquhar (b. 2 July 1856, Gloucester NJ) and Laura Adella Murphy (b. 19 Jan. 1859, Gloucester NJ). They were married 2 Dec. 1877 and had 3 sons and 3 daughters.
Joseph Edward Farquhar (b. 2 July 1856, Gloucester NJ) was the son of Thomas Farquhar (b. abt. 1811, Ballinahinch Ireland) and Elizabeth Stratton (Straiton?) (b. abt. 1817). They were married 3 Apr. 1837 in Girvan, Ayrshire, Scotland.
Thomas and Elizabeth and the four youngest of their eleven children that I know of, emigrated to the US from Scotland in 1846.
Thomas' father was Hugh Farquhar, also born in Ballinahinch, and his mother's maiden name may have been Shank(s).
I would be happy to provide more details on the people mentioned as well as the other members of the family and a copy of the chart if you wish to get in touch with me at farquhar@one-name.org
I am a member of the Guild of One-Name Studies researching the name Farquhar worlwide.
Regards,
Malcolm (Mac) McDonald
It appears we're looking for the same people. The best information I have from census records is that George was born in Tennessee in 1828, but that has been a dead end so far.

His middle initial seems to have been "C."

George and Indiana were married in Massac, Illinois on 29 JUL 1862.

My mother's grandfather used to speak of "Grandpa George" from time-to-time, but that's all we have to go on. Since George was 19 years older than Indiana, I'm having trouble putting the pieces together.

Thanks for the information on the children.

"Ed" is Edwin Ellsworth FARQUHAR who married Lillie Adeline "Addie" MODGLIN.

I don't see Alice listed among the children in your post. I have her being born in 1866. Does she correspond to any on your list?

Let me know if you've found anything on George's parents...

Looking for information on Haddie Farquhar McAdams, Jesse Farquhar and Ellie Farquhar. (Haddie had a daughter: Adele. She had a son. Jessie had no children nor did Ellie.)

I would like to know my Grandfather's parent's name, and the parents before them, and our connection to the Highlands of Scotland.
John Farquhar the Baker and Mary Worral are my ancestors too. I can tell you a lot about them, but can go back further with the family to 1730. I am having research done for a family biography, and have visited Burrelton where John and Mary were for a while before returning to Dundee. John went bankrupt and was put into debtors prison for a few years. He died young not long after getting out and Mary became housekeeper for someone she ended up marrying. I travelled to Dundee last year and am going back again in about a month to research further, although most of it is done now. I have photos of many of the streets and/or houses our family lived in. Mary's mother died in the poorhouse. Email me on bruce.farquhar@bayleys.co.nz and when I'm at work next I'll dig some stuff out and send it to you.

Bruce Farquhar

Mary Williamson married Aarron Farquhar in Missouri. The had 9 children, 8 lived to adulthood. 4 daughters and eldest son are still alive. Mary died out east with Roman but was buried with her husband in Olney,Illinois. The original homestead was broken down over the years and the last section was sold off in the last 10 years. Their children were: Marie,Frank,May,Marion,Ida,Agnes,Roman and Blanche and a little girl died in infancy, Fannie. Ida and Blanche still live in Olney, Marion in Pontiac, Illinois, and Agnes in Tucson,AZ. I can get birth place and dates from Mom if your interested. I know Mary had sisters in Texas and met Aunt Etter, Aunt May and one other in the 190's when Aunt May's husband died (brother in law to Mary).

Courtney Alexander Van Tuyl (born July 14, 1889 in Cook County, IL) married Roberta Farquhar (born February 23, 1888 in Texas) some time between 1920 and 1923. Roberta Farquhar was the daughter of Robert Farquhar and Tennie Payne. I have the death records for both Courtney Alexander Van Tuyl and his wife, Roberta Farquhar Van Tuyl. If you have any additional info or questions, please respond to this message or email me directly at trunewf@ameritech.net Thank you!

Hello Michael:
Nice to hear from you. Your Alex and James are the brothers of Samuel. I have previously been contacted a couple of years ago by a cousin of yours from James's line. But unfortunately I had a small stroke and did not get back to him. It took me a short time to get back in the groove but I never did not get back to my Houston contacts. I do have a lot of names and dates for the Houstons to share with you. If you are in touch with the above cousin he may still have my email. It has not changed. I will be able to then send you what I have on your family.

Mike

hello mike
I do quite a bit of family research for lots of the Glenwherry families- we're all interlinked!!
Elizabeth Orrs husband was Alexander Houston, and they had a son Samuel. Their son Samuels DOB in the baptismal register is 1st January 1881. If this is the same man he was a saddler in Ballyclare. The Alex and James Houstons mentioned in earlier posts were brothers of Samuel(and Great Great uncles of mine by marriage!).
Get in touch with me if you like and I'll try and give you any more information I can.
Regards
Michael.

John Farquhar - born 1749 (not 1745)

I'm getting very confused. I've seen that a lot of people appear to be related to John Farquhar born in 1745 in Rathven, Banffshire, Scotland who married a Janet (or Jannet) Coul (or Coull) in 1794 and had at least three children, possibly four.

I cannot find a John Farquhar born in Rathven in 1745. I do have a John Farquhar who was born in Rathven on or around 8 September 1749 to William Farquhar and Elspet Geddes.

It's my belief that John was married twice. First to Mary Jappy (or Jappie) in 1772 and then to Janet in 1794.

Does this theory ring any bells with anyone?

If my theory is right then this information must be correct:

William Farquhar (John's father) born about 1725
Elspet Geddes (John's mother) born between 1722 and 1731
Married on 15 June 1736

William's parents:
John Farquhar born between 1692 and 1701, died 1741
Jean Matheson born 1699
Married 10 Jan 1724

William's siblings:
Charles born 1727
Alexander born 1727
John born 1729

Going back to John, I have the following children from marriage to Mary Jappy:

William born 1773
John born 1776
Ann born 1778
James born 1780
Margaret born 1782
Jean born 1785
Helen born 1787
George born 1789
