Re: FARR/PIERCE Families from Wales to Lackawanna County, PA

Does anyone know who the parents of Ann Pierce were? I am trying to figure out if they were my relations - Richard Pierce & Margaret Watkins. From what I know, Richard & Margaret emigrated from South Wales to Pennsylvania in the 1860s (Richard came first and then Margaret came with their 3 children - Ann, Elizabeth, and David - in 1862). Margaret had a total of 6 children, 4 of whom were living at the time of the 1900 census. In the 1920 census, David W. Pierce is living in the household of Thomas & Anna Farr, and is listed as Thomas' bro-in-law. Therefore, I am assuming that this would account for David and Anna. Mary, Richard, and Maggie were born in Pennsylvania, as shown in the 1880 census of Scranton. I'm not yet sure which of the other 4 children died prior to 1900. Anyhow, I'd be happy to contribute more information about the Watkins family (my line) to anyone interested. Thank you.

Nothing about Henry Morgan or Henry Morgan Farr, however one of Amanda Farr Clower’s sons was Morgan Clower. I suspect this is your family based on the names, but you need to look at some census and wills to be sure. Two books you might find helpful are Holmes County Mississippi Pioneers (pub by Pioneer Pub Co.) and Mississippi Index of Wills: 1800-1900 (Pub by Heritage Books). Both are by Betty Couch Wiltshire. The Holmes book has information on the Holmes Co Farrs and the Clowers. The index of wills book lists several Farr and Clower wills including the will of Susan Farr, wife of William H. Farr. Good luck in your research.

James Wilson Farr’s daughter Amanda Elizabeth Farr was born 28 Feb 1837 and died 17 Apr 1909 both in Hinds Co. She married Benjamin F. Hall. Their children were Emma, James F., Thomas R., Martha E., Nonnie F., Maggie C., Hiram L., and John W. E. Hall. Wm. H. Farr’s daughter Elizabeth Amanda Farr was born in 1838 in Holmes Co and Died in 1926 in Attala Co. She married Benjamin R. Clower. Their children were William, Mary, Franklin, Susan, Morgan, and Sillie Clower. At least those are the ones I’m aware of. James W. Farr, Amanda’s father, had a brother named Charles Kavanaugh Farr (b. 1817 in TN, d. 1861 in VA during Civil War). He had no children. He had married a 70 yr old woman when he was 33 yrs old. She filed for divorce a few years later but it was never granted. James W. Farr’s brother George Washington Farr named one of his sons Charles K. Farr (b 1848, d. 1912) after his brother. He married and had several children but none were named Amanda. One of his sons was Charles R. Farr but he didn’t have a daughter named Amanda either. As I said, I’m not able to find any connection between James W. Farr of Hinds Co and William H. Farr of Holmes Co. Perhaps they were distantly related through the SC connection.

Thanks for reminding me of Lexington’s location. I’ve only been to MS a few times and spent all my time in the State Archives and the Edwards & Bolton area of Hinds Co. What started my interest in Holmes County was a missing Farr brother search. I think we have found the missing brother in Warren Co now and I was never able to find a connection between William H. Farr of Holmes Co and my husband’s gr-grandfather James Wilson Farr of Hinds Co. In the Hinds Co MS Old Series Estate files for 1862, James W. Farr wrote a letter asking to administer the estate of his brother Charles K. Farr. In the letter, he said that CKF had died without children and his heirs included 3 brothers 2 sisters and 2 children of a deceased brother and sister. We know all of the living children but are still working to confirm the deceased brother. Wm H. Farr of Holmes Co was born in SC in 1805 died in MS in 1845. What is especially interesting is that he had a daughter named Elizabeth Amanda Farr. James W. Farr had a daughter named Amanda Elizabeth Farr. Both girls were born within a year of each other. Also, WHF paid taxes in Hinds Co in the 1840s. However, all of our siblings were born in NC, GA & TN. Our family lived in SC only until 1800 when they moved to NC. I’ve gone through mountains of microfilm and original documents and can’t find any connection between them.

Hello Dennis
Thanks for your reply. My G G Grandfather, Edwin J Farr was born 1843 in Hanbury, Worcs so we are referring to two different guys here. I believe this part of my family were living 'on the water' at this time. Edwin worked in Worcester as a railway labourer, married in Dudley then moved to Aston where he became a railway guard and several of his sons worked on the railway too. It's all very interesting, isn't it?
Thanks again
Beverley (nee Farr)

Thanks for your reply. Apparently Yazoo City, per se, was founded in 1824.. so it's the right time period, and Lexington is another town mentioned in the family---which IS in Holmes County, not too far(r).

I'm afraid not. I've done some research on the Farrs of Holmes County and the Farrs of Perry County to look for connections. My Farrs were in Warren County in the 1820s. We have a branch in TN as well as a more distant branch in Indiana.

I believe they did. Most into SC & NC and then their descendents spread to GA & TN. Eventually my husband's line into MS ending up in Hinds Co. The whole story is in Pharrs & Farrs. The book was originally written in the late 1890s and then updated in 1953. I have added a supplemental chapter on the James Bradley Farr line recently. Barry Farr & I also added a chapter about the Farr DNA project. The book is available on DVD from Cecil Pharr.

That sounds very interesting! Did the 4 brothers all head South? I keep thinking there just weren't that many people, so probably most settlers were related, following one another through word of mouth... they'd have given their own family members leads on grant opportunities, etc..

I've been working on the MS Farrs for years now. My husband had his DNA done and is descended from one of the 4 Farr brothers who arrived in PA around 1749. I believe he is descended from George Farr through James Bradley Farr. There were two Farrs in the Alabama part of MS territory in the early 1800s. James Farr in the lake Tensaw region was in MS territory in 1795 according to his US Territorial land claim. James Bradley Farr came to the Baldwin Co area around 1810. He petitioned for land there in 1809. Both James Farrs signed a petition to limit immigration into the territory in 1810. The two signitures are "James Farr" and "James B. Farr" so I'm sure there were two different James Farrs in the territory during that time. James B. Farr fought in the MS Territorial Militia during the War of 1812. He first belonged to a Militia unit in Baldwin Co and then transferred to Hind's Militia Unit. I have his service records and am looking for a pension now.

I traced our Farr family from Mississippi backwards....

Farrs in and around Oxford and Yazoo MS came from the Carolinas, from Pennsylvannia (with Quaker roots and connections to Wm Penn), but were originally from Wales. in fact, there were a number of Welsh families that migrated en masse from Wales to PA to the Carolinas to Mississippi) as land grants became available. The Farrs from the Carolinas arrived in MS in the 1830s, I think I remember. I'd be glad to hear of any more recent connections. My late Uncle (b. 1937)had once been in touch with his father's cousins, his Farr father, my grandfather, born in Oxford in, I think 1910. Other family names of the migrating clans: Morgan and Clower, that I know. Clower was actually Klauer, from Rotterdam before emigrating to Wales. These ancestors traveled!

I am looking for any information about the parents of Samuel Hampton Farr/Pharr. Samuel Hampton Farr was born on 7 Mar 1884 in Georgia and died 13 Aug 1943 in Greene County, Alabama. He is buried in Boley Springs, Alabama. He married Mary Elizabeth Westbrook (1899-1987). I cannot seem to locate the name of his father/mother. There is a family story "clue" that he ranaway from home with a brother. This brother was said to have died/drown while swimming across a river. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you!!! - Carrie

Sue, Males are tested for Y-dna which follows the male line and yes we use it for genealogy. It does not tell who you and someone else are related but does give years. With a match you and the other person do plain old genelogy research to connect.
Example: A friend and I for a lot of years tried to connect our Oakley families cause they lived in same area, but lived there in different time period and named children almost the same. We were sure that mine was a son or grandson of his ancestor. After we tested (tested my brother) our results came back...no way were we related, maybe at the Ark. We were so disappointed, felt like I lost a brother, angry at all the time & effort, and the money over the years.
If at anytime you consider it..please contact Tim and test.
My Farr male cousin tested for me and so far no matches, so I try to encourage anyone to test. My James Farr born England about 1766 came USA & I cant find anyone who he connects to...
Derrell, 68 y/o female

Thank you for your reply. I THINK that some of them may have gone to the US but not sure. I havent got that far as yet.

When it comes to DNA projects, it seems that the males have to give the DNA. The females cant be traced back. Its not fair but we cant do anything about that. You males have the upper hand when it comes to that.

Thanks again.

Sue W

I'm the 5th great-granddaughter of James Farr born guessing mid 1760's England and died 1829 in South Carolina USA.

I have no clue who his parents were or where in England they lived or how old he was when he came here. I know he/they lived in PA at some time, since his wife was from there and most children were born there before moving to SC.

There is a FARR DNA project run by Tim Farr, he is trying to connect fmailies from all over the world.

If you can please consider testing thru his project, FTDNA has a great sale going on right now...very cheap price.
Tim Farr [dustyhills@hotmail.com]

With you help and others maybe we connect some families.
Derrell

Hi,
Im trying to trace my Farr relatives. Ive only just found that my G g/father Samuel FARR was born in Wiltshire. He married a Frances E ? and lived in Dorset where my Grandmother Alice Rose FARR was born along with a few more siblings.
She then married an Alfred Malcolm POLAND in LONDON and they, with 5 children (one other one was deceased), sailed to Australia in 1911. This POLAND family disembarked in Adelaide.
'I have also managed to find an extensive connection of the FARR family to Australia from the late 1800's.' Im wondering if any more of the Farrs that are in my line, also migrated to Australia.
Also, in the POLAND side of my family, I have a Lily Lee whom my G g/father Charles POLAND married. Have you got any information on whether your Ann Lee and my Lily Lee are connected.
Much appreciated if you have any information whatsoever.
