Sorry, I was not aware I was supposed to have check Google.

I found that Nathan, one of Bethuel and Rhoda's children also had a daughter named Nancy. This seems to have been the right Nancy I was looking for. She fits in exactly as Rhoda's Nancy died much earlier - according to one person on the day she married a Mr. Kitchel.

Thank you for your response. I was not aware of it until the other day when I started searching again. Stan D.

Benoni Farrand born 1731 - some answers

I have been working on the brick wall that is Benoni Farrand for a couple of years. Slowly, the fog is lifting. I recently returned from the LDS library in Salt Lake where I spent a week working on this family.
You can find more detail on my tree "Courter Family Tree" (I am still adding documentation there). Below is a short narrative.

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/5416607/person/-1421448061?pg...

Conclusions thus far:

Benoni Farrand was born 25 Jun 1731 in Northhampton MA to Joanna Allis and Thomas Farrand. This is proven by the actual birth register. The name Benoni was given in the 18th century to children born in tragic circumstances and therefore it is likely he was either born out of wedlock or that his mother died.

Within a few months of his birth, his father married Mary Hall. Mary and Thomas lived in Palmer MA where their children were born.

I do not know what happened to Joanna. There appear to have been two Joanna Allis' living in the Connecticut River Valley area around Benoni's birth. One was Nathaniel Allis' daughter Jemima (also called Joanna) who married Eliakim Root but I do not think she is Benoni Farrand's mother. It appears that she lived all her life in Connecticut.

The other Joanna Allis was the daughter of John and Mary Lawrence. Per the vital records of Northampton, Mary Lawrence died the year after Joanna's birth shortly after the birth of a daughter who also died. John married Bethia(h) Field after Mary's death.

I could find nothing to document Joanna daughter of John's death or marriage to Thomas or anyone else. Her birth however is documented in the birth register of Northampton.

After his birth, Benoni Farrand appears to most likely have been raised by his grandfather and stepgrandmother (Bethia Field). When Benoni was 14 he petitioned to change his guardian to Jonathan Field of Sunderlund a cousin or nephew of Bethia Field Allis. The petition is in the probate records. Unfortunately it does not state who his guardian had been.

Benoni fought in the Seven Years War and achieved the rank of Sergeant. He was under Israel Williams and John Burk's command. John Burk's activities are documented in the history of Bernardston MA. After the War, he married Mary Cambell (I think this is the correct spelling since it was the spelling used in the name of one of her grandchildren). Two children were born in Sunderlund, at least one was born in Deerfield. I have not been able to document the birth of the other children.

During the Rev War, Benoni ran into a bit of trouble. He tried to set up a ferry across the Connecticut and the Sunderland town officials took exception to this. (see description on my tree). Sometime in that same period he was tried as a Loyalist and convicted. However, he stayed in Deerfield about 10 years after the War. There is no indication that he lost property or was jailed. I am trying to get the record of his trial.

There are a few scattered records until he removes to Sudbury VT in about 1790. There, he was the town clerk recording land transactions. His name is all over the recording of deeds. Later he seems to have given this position up but still functioned as the clerk in the town meetings, recording the minutes. Sometime in the late 1790's he drops off the radar in that area. He may have relocated with his son Abraham. I have not been able to document his death.

I have also been doing quite a bit of work on Thomas Farrand and Andrew Farrand (Benoni's uncle). We know that they came from Ulster in 1718 and went from Boston to Worchester to Palmer to Kingstown. Most documents list Andrew since he was the older brother. Thomas also seems to have been traveling up and down the Connecticut River before his marriage.

I have not been able to tie the Farrands to a certain location in Ulster or Scotland. There are published trees on the Jamesons of Scotland and MA which state that a Thomas married Margaret Jameson. I have some of this info on my tree but it is all very tentative.

Let me know what you all think. Be sure to look at my tree for dates and details.

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/5416607/person/-1421448061?pg...

Hi Sandra,
I believe we are related. George Farrand who died in Ohio in 1836 left a son Lyman born that same year or so. He then ended up in SD a Civil War vet. and I'm his family line. I would love to go back in history if you have more information. I believe we can trace this line to Thomas Farrand who as born in Charleson or Londonderry, Ireland 1678 and whose son Thomas came to the US in 1718 and settled in Palmer, Mass. Thomas then married Marey Hall daughter of Elisha Hall and Phillippi. Does anyone have more history on these lines?

Thank you so much for your help! Are we related? I've found the Rev. Vet Jared Farrand in Ohio and he had a son George Farrand. I've traced that line back to Ireland. I'm hoping I'm on the right track. George died so young that Lyman was raised by Jemima's brother. My grandmother was Selma Jemima Farrand. Now I know where the name came from.

The census records consistently show that Lyman was born in Ohio.

1850 Pierrepont, St. Lawrence, NY
Thadeous C. Coon 32 VT
Tilman 32 VT (actually Filura)
Eliza 8 VT
Edson 3 VT
Elmira 0 VT
Lyman Farrand 12 OH

1850 Colchester, Chittenden, VT
Wm. S. Hyde 36 VT
Jemima Hyde 39 VT
Adeline Hyde 15 OH
John Smith 0 VT

My guess was that Gemima/Jemima was probably a sister of either Thadeus Coon or his wife Filura and they were all probably from Colchester.

1860 Calamus, Dodge, WI
William Hyde 45 VT
Gemima Hyde 48 VT
Adeline Farrand 25 OH
Lyman Farrand 23 OH
John Hyde 10 VT
Alice Hyde 5 NY

Next to the Hydes on the census page:
F.H. Coon 38 VT (Freeman H.)
Cordilca 30 VT
Ada 7 NY
Ida 3 WI
Nina 11/12 WI

I found a family tree on Ancestry for Eber Coon & Olive Starr
Children include Jemima b. 20 Apr 1811
Thaddeus Comfort b. 1817
Freeman H. b. 1822
(This actually lists children and parents as Macoone)

When googling around, I had found a reference to a George Farrand who died in Ohio in 1836*. When I looked on Ancestry, there is a George Farrand (b. 1807 VT) who married Jemima Coon in 1832.

* "The Descendants of Dolor Davis" lists the children of Jared Farrand and Hannah Evans. There is a Lyman Farrand and a George (died 1836).

I hope this is helpful.

There is also an Adeleline Farrand that may have been Lyman's sister. Lyman married Elizabeth Buck born in 1848 in Wisconsin. They had 5 boys one of which was my great grandfather William Henry Farrand.

Max Farrand is one of the greatest American historians. His work on the proceeding of the Constitutional Convention is cited as authority on the thinking of the founding fathers in Supreme Court cases. Anyone studying Constitutional Law runs into his name constantly. He was a professor at Yale and I believe he has a son with the same name who is now a Yale professor.
Suzanne

Katharine Farrand had three daughters (all in the 1920 census): Katharine H., Margaret A., and Edith. Am wondering if one of the daughters could have been the (single) mother to Katharine E.

I believe he is the son of Samuel Ashbel Farrand and Louise Wilson, b. 29 Mar 1869 in Newark, NJ and d. 17 Jun 1945 in Reef Point, Bar Harbour, ME. He was married to Beatrix Cadwalader Jones, a famous landscape architech and neice of novelist Edith Wharton. Max was a Historian, Librarian - Professor at Wesleyan University, CT. He was the grandson of Samuel Farrand and Mary (Polly) Kitchell. I can't seem to find my source for this, but there is a lot of information on his wife, Beatrix Cadwalder Jones, and that's probably where I got it. Hope this helps.
