Jane Hearne Farrar Seymour 1917-2012 Columbus, Ohio

Jane Hearne Farrar Seymour, 95, died on Friday, April 27, 2012.

Born in Columbus, Ohio on March 29, 1917, she was the daughter of John Xerxes and Antoinette Hearne Farrar.

Mrs. Seymour attended the Eastwood Elementary School and graduated in 1934 from the Columbus School for Girls, where she was President of the Student Council.

She graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1938.

During her sophomore year there, a story she had written was published in the New Yorker Magazine.
After college, she returned to Columbus, Ohio and worked as a reporter on the Ohio State Journal.

In 1940, she married James Owens Seymour. She shared her husband's love of reading, travel and the woods on their farm near Delaware.
During the 1940's and early 50's, she served on the Board of Managers of the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts and as President of the Bryn Mawr Club of Columbus and of the Columbus Parents League.
She was editor of the Columbus School for Girls Newsletter in the late 1940's and much of the 1950's.
After resigning from her post as editor, she continued for 35 years to contribute brief essays about moments in the history of the school.
During the 1950's and early 60's she served as Alumnae Representative for the Bryn Mawr Regional Scholarship Program, interviewing potential applicants from Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, and West Virginia.
In 1964, one of her ceramic bowls won an award at the Ohio State Fair.

In 1965, as a member of the Board of Planned Parenthood, she helped successfully lobby the Ohio State Legislature to legalize contraception in Ohio; the results were signed into law by Governor Rhodes.

Beginning the late 1970's, she turned her attention to placing books she owned of historic value in the libraries of Ohio colleges where relatives had studied.

Throughout the 1990's she made numerous gifts of books to Oberlin, Kenyon College, Bryn Mawr College and the Columbus School for Girls.
After she had succeeded in finding good homes for the valuable books from her own library, she began to search for and find neglected treasures in used bookstores and to place them appropriately.

She is survived by her daughter, Antoinette Farrar Seymour Lofgren of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and by her nephew and nieces, Jack (Betsy) Farrar, Caroline (Bill) Orrick, Ann (Scott) Yawberg and Betsy Edwards.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 125 East Broad Street, at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 11, 2012 the Rev. Richard A. Burnett presiding.

Donations may be made to Planned Parenthood of Central Ohio, 206 East State Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215 or the Beatrice Constant Marvin Scholarship Fund at Columbus School for Girls, 56 South Columbia Avenue, Columbus 43209.

Please visit www.schoedinger.com to share a memory or to extend condolences to the family.

Franklin County

I am a Farrar descendant, but do not think Isaac is one of my ancestors. All my Farrars were in and around Nelson County VA as well as Appomattox County VA. I did a quick web search to find that information about Isaac. Before I retired I did a lot of research for detection of criminal activity and learned a few helpful web searching tricks along the way. Glad I could be of help! Frank

Virginia,

I am trying to find information about a specific Farrar, and your name gives me pause. My GG Grandmother was Emily Booker Farrar, Born in 1829 from either Georgia or Oxford NC (records unclear). She married Samuel L Slaughter.

She named some of her sons and daughters Cicely,Francis Cicero,Booker F, And Farrar.. clearly she was proud of the names in her family, which leads me to believe she was part of the Farrars of Farrar Island.

Any information would be appreciated!

Robert

I wish to share a scientific update.
The Farrar DNA project at Family Tree DNA (www.familytreedna.com) has quite a few descendants of William Farrar of Virginia, including me.

We belong to haplogroup R1a1a1g, and those who have tested, have tested positive for SNP Z93. Single Nucleotide Polymorphism, A SNP stays constant throughout the ages, and any mutations of it can be traced back to it's ancestor.

The Farrars of Virginia are Eurasian in origin, on the male (Y DNA) line, http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/9622/r1acladessnp.jpg

This makes the claim that we are descended from Henry de Ferrers a Norman, descendant of a Viking,to be unlikely.

The best guess at the moment is that we are descended from a Sarmatian, possibly a member of the Alani tribe or of a Sarmatian cavalryman who was stationed at the Roman Castra at Ribchester,Lancashire not far from Ewood manor, Midgley,West Riding Yorkshire, ancestral home of the Farrars of Yorkshire.

Science speaks, and when it does it negates myth.

There is a possibility, conjectural, that Gualchelin de Ferrieres St Hillaire was himself of Alani (a Sarmatian tribe) origin.

I don't think it has a population as such. It's now a historical site and park known as Henricus Park. It has displays and artifacts from the early colonial period and a small gift shop / museum. If you do a Google for Henricus Park you will find a website that will tell you all about it.I attempted to visit last summer but a heavy thunder storm struck just as I drove in.. Will go back again when the weather improves!

Farrars - trying to connect 2 different lines around the same period

My mother was a Farrar, and her ancestors were from Nelson County VA near Afton. Her grandfather was John Wm Farrar (1864-1925), his father was Seaton Farrar (1830-1900), and his father was William Farrar, born around 1788, He married Esther McClain. We can't find anyone earlier than that.

My dad has Farrars in his family tree, from his grandmother going back many generations. Her name was Miranda M. Farrar (1857-1927). She married Elijah N Martin in 1910 and lived in Appomattox County VA until they both died in the mid to late 1920s. Her father was Robert Norman Farrar (1818-1870). Going back from there: Charles Farrar Jr (1783-1869), Charles Sr.(1758-84). Joseph (1730-1777), William IV, III, II, I (arrived in Jamestown aboard the Neptune in 1618).

I'm hoping to find that William Farrar's line on my mother's side (1788) will connect to Charles Jr. or Sr... Or to Joseph or William IV or III further back.

I have been away from these sites for a long time, but with help from a very diligent aunt we have made great progress in ou research (which has gotten her into DAR).

Any help, suggestions, thoughts or comments will be very much appreciated!

A five-year-old girl named Joyce P. Farrar was living with her grandparents in the 1930 census at Walton in Charlotte Co. VA. Her grandfather was Westley J. Farrar (age 56), and her grandmother was Bettie B. Farrar (age 48). Others
in that household were Ester M. Farrar (age 15), and Sameul [sic.] W. Daniel (age 76). Do you think that this Joyce Farrar is the one you're looking for?

Tim,
I would love if you are able to share any photos or books of Arthur Sr. and Mamie. I am still working on the Farrar part of the family, with the help of our cousin doreen.
FYI: Doreen mentioned that Arthur Jr. may have stayed in the Rhode Island area. It is said that he would secretly visit the funeral home after hours whenever a family member died.
I would also love more information on your part of the family. Based on my father, he remembers Henry having three children, but based on your last name there may be four? If your able to shed some light, It would be appreciated. I probably met your mother when I was younger, most likely at my grandmothers funeral, Janet S. Lewis. She would most likely remember my father, Richard.
I just came across this post. My grandfather was Henry J. Steere, my mother's father. I visited Miles and Annie's grave in Greenville cemetery (near the right side) a couple years ago and didn't realize he may have re-married or that he immigrated from Leeds with his family. It would be interesting to trace the Farrar lines back further.

I don't really know much about about the Farrars as my grandfather died fairly young. My mother told me she visited her great-Aunt Grace quite a bit in Pascoag, I think. I had heard the story that Arthur Steere, Jr. was never heard from again but didn't know he flew off in his plane. I have some books and copies of photos belonging to Arthur Sr. and Mamie, because Mamie lived her last years in my grandparent's house, and could send you copies if you're interested. Thanks for the information.

Tim

You're one of Nettie's grandchildren? Wonderful! I'm sorry about the delay in responding, but I just now saw your message. I remember your grandmother well. I remember going to your grandfather's funeral, although I was too young to remember him alive. At my grandmother Edith Keech Farrar's funeral, your great-uncle Seth reminisced about how he and his nephew, Warren Farrar, both courted her. Warren won, even if Seth was the better prize. I'd love to trade stories with you, if you want to email me directly. doreenfarrar@yahoo.com

Grace was born in May 1883, according to the 1900 census. Herbert (another one who disappeared, and I never heard him called Miles Herbert...) was born November 1890. Grace died around 1965. Herbert died in California in, I believe, 1950, just a few months away from Warren's death, also in 1950 but in Rhode Island. As for the 9th child, there was a daughter, not sure right now of her name (Margaret?), who died at the age of 2. Ancestry used to have her death record.

Nice to find another cousin!
Doreen

Hi! I have a Great Grandmother that was "Sarah Ann Farrar". She married George Smith. He was born in Leeds 12/20/1842). She was born in 1844 and died in Jun 18,1928. They had 2 children, Joseph(1867-England) and Jame(1869-England) Then Mary in Minnesota. I have that she was born in Headingley, Yorkshire (by Leeds). I think her father might have been David??? I can't find a record of her coming over. Do you think there is a connection??

Hi Diane,

I beleive your grandfather and mine are brothers. Joseph, Harold and James. Yours was the older of the 3 boys. Emphram died and Jennie remarried and had a daughter Ruth Evans.

My grandfather and his brother Harold both died young .. in 1942. From what I understand yours was the oldest born in 1897, James was born in 1907 and Harold 1910.

Jennie remarried and had Ruth in 1917 .. so Emphram had to have died sometime before 1917 but after Harold was born in 1910. If you see this message - send me a message back and we can try to help fill in each other gaps

Thanks
Debbie

Information about William Padget Gale Farrar from Batley Yorkshire

I am seeking information about William Padget Gale Farrar(1854-1919) and his wife Hannah Holmes (1853/54-1908)who married inDewsbury Yorkshire on 24 July 1873. I am unable so far to find out:
* how/when/from where William immigrated to Australia (he
did not travel on the Dorunda with hannah and children
in 1892)
* Hannah's background. The marriage certificate gives her
father as 'Jonas Holmes deceased. Hannah was living in
Batley
